What Does Governance Mean?

We often use the term “governance” when talking about accountability, but what does it really mean for us as Members of Tokyo American Club, an organization that has served its community for 98 years? Governance may sound like a technical concept, but at its core, it reflects something simple and essential: how our Club is run, who makes decisions, and how the organization remains accountable to its Members.

For our Club, governance begins with Members who register to vote. Our voting Members take the first and most important step by selecting a Board of Governors.

This year, on November 18, you elected six new governors and approved a statutory auditor to serve two-year terms, bringing the total to 16 volunteers who have stepped forward to help the Club fulfill its mandate. This act of choosing your representatives is not just a procedural requirement; it is the foundation of a healthy, Memberdriven organization.

Now it is our turn to serve you. To prepare for the responsibilities ahead, the Board, together with the newly

appointed committee chairs and senior management, will participate in a board training workshop. This session is designed to ensure that we begin our term aligned, informed, and ready to guide the Club openly and effectively.

As the Club continues to evolve, so do the expectations placed on its leadership. We want to ensure that our activities are conducted in the most efficient, transparent, and forward-looking manner possible.

Board training is a key part of this commitment.

These sessions help sharpen judgment, clarify legal responsibilities, build consensus, and strengthen decision-making. They help governors understand not only what their duties are but also how to fulfill them thoughtfully and confidently. Training also reinforces the appropriate relationship between Member governance and management by supporting strong oversight without interfering in daily operations.

Most importantly, board training builds alignment.

It ensures that every governor understands their role, the Club’s strategic priorities, and the processes that support effective governance. This reduces risk, improves communication, and allows the Board to operate as a cohesive leadership team. Training transforms a group of dedicated volunteers into a confident and capable body that protects the Club’s mission and moves it forward.

Ultimately, our goal is clear: we want to strengthen our leadership skills so that we can serve you, the Members, in the most effective and responsible way.

These upcoming sessions are not only about learning but also about honoring the trust you have placed in us and preparing ourselves to guide the Club into its next chapter with purpose and unity.

The Club’s official app lets you find your fellow Members, have conversations, and set up chat groups. And it all starts with the Member Directory.

To make sure that your profile can be discovered, head to the main menu and tap on My Settings. On the next screen, scroll down to “Appear or hide profile in Member Directory” and uncheck Hide Profile (it will be checked by default). Hit Save, and you’re all set.

Then, to start chatting, go back to the main menu and tap on Chat Groups. There you’ll find an interface like other popular messaging apps, allowing you to chat with individual Members or set up groups. Go on and strike up a conversation! AJ

Pigskin Party Last year, Super Bowl LIX hit a record high with 127.7 million viewers in the US as the Philadelphia Eagles walloped the Kansas City Chiefs 40–22. Football fans in the States—and around the world—already have the 60th edition of the NFL championship marked on their calendars. Here in Tokyo, there may be no better place to catch the big game than the Club.

The fun kicks off at 7:30am on February 9 in the New York Ballroom and Brooklyn Suite.

Throughout the live viewing, Members and guests can feast on a mouthwatering array of breakfast bites and tailgate-party favorites like buffalo wings, burgers, and nachos, paired with local brews and cocktails. Whichever team you’ll be pulling for, saving the day for this gridiron celebration is a winning play. AJ

From the Shelves and it was a story I enjoyed listening to again and again as my mother read it to me.

It still stands out clearly in my memory.

What inspired your love of books?

There have always been a lot of books at home. My parents would read to me when I was little. After I was able to read by myself, it was natural to bury myself in books, spending more and more time reading whenever I had the chance.

What genre do you most enjoy?

Miu Yanagi

Born in Tokyo and spending her early years in London, Member Miu Yanagi’s love of books began to blossom when she was three. Since then, reading has been an important part of her life. Today, the 10-year-old can be found in the second-floor Library searching for her next great literary adventure.

What was your favorite early childhood book?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I was drawn to its colorful illustrations and gentle rhythm,

I most enjoy mystery novels.

I like the way suspense builds with each page and how the story keeps me curious until the very end. I especially enjoy mysteries that have a surprising twist at the end.

What are you currently reading?

The Bletchley Riddle by Ruta Sepetys and Steve Sheinkin.

It was chosen as a Sakura Medal book, and I always find Sakura books fun to read, so I decided to start it and am enjoying it so far.

When were you last unable to put down a book?

When I was reading The Ministry of Unladylike Activity

by Robin Stevens. The story pulled me in so completely that I kept turning pages, telling myself I would stop after the next chapter—until I finished the book.

Some things in life are very slippery. There’s ice, butter, and bar soap. And then there’s the caseless iPhone. Member John Sasaki discovered just how hard it can be to hold on to one while heading to the Club.

“I was sitting on a wall across from the entrance and messing around with my new phone when it flew out of my hand,” he recalls. “Of course it goes right into this little slot between the pillar and the wall. The space was just wide enough for the phone to slip in. I could see it, but my hand couldn’t fit in there. I didn’t know how I was going to get it out.”

Sasaki called over the police officer who guards the booth alongside the Russian Embassy. He tried to figure out what to do, but they don’t have supplies in that small booth.

Fortunately, parking supervisor Thomas Shirota noticed and immediately came over. He peered down the crack, then went back to the gatehouse and returned with supervisor Makoto Mizuta, who was carrying a hanger and a flashlight.

“By this time, another police officer had arrived, so the five of us were huddled in front of the apartment building trying to fish out the phone,” Sasaki explains.

Because there was no case, there was nothing to hook onto, and the thin phone nestled in gravel wasn’t going to slide up easily. But Mizuta and Shirota were determined.

As a former chair of the Human Resources Committee, Sasaki has long appreciated the staff at the Club. The day’s fishing trip highlighted that.

“It took about 30 minutes, but Makoto and Thomas raised it up, bit by bit, and my new phone was finally back in my hand. It showed some signs of its treacherous journey, but I was so grateful to have it back.” CBJ

If you’re looking for a reason to visit the recently renovated 51 East Bar & Lounge, bartender Renny Puente has crafted the perfect excuse: winter cocktails.

Leading the lineup is the Cioccolato Martini, a vodka-based delight for anyone seeking rich decadence in a glass. Imagine a melted chocolate sundae packing a punch with Van Gogh vodka and cacao brown liqueur.

This one deserves to be appreciated on its own.

Switching to light mode, we have the Blanca. Made with aged Corralejo Añejo tequila, this cocktail is capped by a smooth layer of fresh cream, echoing the serene peaks of the Japanese Alps. The lush initial mouthfeel and creamy flavors are quickly penetrated by sharp, smoky tequila, while butterscotch caramel adds just the right amount of sweetness, body, and complexity. Pairs well with the herb-infused porchetta.

Whiskey lovers will enjoy the Maple Old Fashioned. Maple syrup and Zinfandel add a slight wintry twist to the firm Ballantine’s Finest backbone.

The syrup’s light sweetness matches perfectly with the Zin’s dark fruit. It’s a smooth, crisp drink that stands on its own—you can imagine sipping it by an open fire—but also makes a great partner for deeply flavored items such as the smoked beef tongue.

Cub Scouts and Troop 51 From its early 20th-century roots in Britain, Scouting aimed to develop boys into good citizens with initiative and outdoor skills.

Decades later, around 57 million young people—boys and girls—from more than 200 countries and territories are involved in the movement.

Since 1975, the Club has offered young Members a chance to grow through Troop 51. Open to ages 11–17, the group meets one Sunday per month, does at least one monthly outing, and takes trips abroad to places such as Thailand, Mongolia, and Nepal.

Jesse McCreight, a Troop 51 senior patrol leader, says that he likes Scouting because of the variety of activities and challenges.

“I get to try new things and go to new places, learn new skills, and adapt to the environment. I can apply those skills in the future when I am in certain situations.”

For ages 5–11, there’s Cub Scout Pack 51, which meets on the second Friday of each month.

Nihonbashi Cocktail Hour Since opening in March 2021, Muromachi Bar has wowed legions of visitors while cultivating a loyal clientele through its welcoming appeal, wood-and-brass East Coast art deco look, and innovative menu of drinks.

“I especially enjoy how the bar team offers a wide variety of classic cocktails,” says Member Kei Ichikawa. “For example, when ordering a martini, they’ll ask if I prefer gin or vodka, stirred or shaken, and even which gin I’d like—it becomes part of the fun.”

Another part of the fun is Cocktail Hour, hosted on the final Tuesday of each month. The workshop offers Members a glimpse behind the curtain, inviting budding mixologists to step behind the bar and learn to make one of the Club’s signature drinks.

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT Auto industry veteran Greg Adams invites Members to share their love of cars in a new Club community.

Before Greg Adams could walk, he was spouting

words like “Mustang” and “Camaro.” Ever since, he has lived and breathed cars, having worked with leading global brands in Japan and abroad. Now the Member wants to bring like-minded car fanatics together at the Club to share news and views about automotive passion.

Adams grew up on a 300-year-old street in Philadelphia and took an interest in neighbors’ Porsches, Fiats, Ferraris, Volkswagen campers, and BMWs. What really sealed the deal was a visit to an auto show where he got to sit in an Aston Martin DB5, the famous British grand tourer seen in the 1964 James Bond film Goldfinger.

“I can’t get rid of the car bug,” says Adams. “It’s driven me to want to work internationally in the car industry from day one, so there was never another career path for me.”

That desire led him to an international internship at Nissan’s technical center at Atsugi while working on his MBA at the University of South Carolina. It was his first taste of the automotive industry, and it ignited a lifelong passion.

“I love car design, but it’s only one piece,” says Adams.

“I also enjoy the business, the technologies, the characters, the politics. My background is in product planning and branding. I love when a broad team gets together and

creates a total concept that is just amazing.”

Adams returned to Nissan after graduating in 1991, and then went on to product planning and marketing positions in Japan, Singapore, and China at Ford, DaimlerChrysler, and Mitsubishi. In 2007, he moved to Ferrari and established its official importer, Ferrari Japan. When he moved back to the US to be closer to family in 2010, he worked there for Ferrari and electric vehicle (EV) startups, then later engaged in global automotive consulting.

It was another luxury Italian carmaker that brought Adams back to Japan in 2020. Maserati wanted to draw on his knowledge of the Japanese market to help introduce EVs, so he returned in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Two years later, he moved to Aston Martin, where he worked until last September. He’s now doing consulting for a European OEM’s micromobility project.

Over his career, Adams has witnessed all the ups and downs of the Japanese auto industry. “Clearly, the way the world is moving and the fact there are so many new players from China, there has to be a way to bring some of them together to take advantage of some of the strengths, creativity, and engineering of the Japanese industry.”

Adams invites fellow Club Members to join him in the TAC Car Club to share their love for all things automotive.

He plans to hold regular get-togethers with events like OEM and museum visits, scenic drives, car reveals, track days, and talks by industry experts.

Japan, Adams says, is home to the world’s most diverse, passionate, eclectic, and knowledgeable car culture. “Few places on earth offer such an extraordinary variety of automotive treasures. I want to connect everyone, create a community within a community, put passions together, and stimulate overall interest in cars—even among people who do not own one—just as happened to me when I was younger.”

In the lead-up to the 1988 Summer

Olympics, Nils Plett missed his shot at the US Olympic trials and the possibility of visiting Asia by two-hundredths of a second.

At the time, he was training five hours a day as a competitive swimmer at the University of California, Santa Barbara with an eye on representing the United States in Seoul.

The Olympics may not have opened the door to Asia, but curiosity did. While still at university, Plett took a course on Japan taught by a professor whose enthusiasm for the country’s history and culture left a lasting impression. In 1989, he arrived in Japan, never imagining he would one day help guide the Club in the years leading up to its centennial.

More than three decades later, Plett steps into the role of representative governor. As he takes the helm, the California native talks to INTOUCH about his vision for the Club that has become his home.

How did you become involved in the Club?

I first encountered the Club shortly after arriving in Tokyo. Invited as a guest within my first three months here, I remember feeling membership was exclusive and out of reach. As a 23-year-old, it didn’t feel like the right moment. I was focused on learning the language, understanding the culture, and building a life here.

That changed years later. In 2015, I was managing an American company with an office near Tokyo Tower, and many of my clients were Club Members. By then, I had a very different perspective. I understood the value of community and saw the Club as a place where I could both belong and contribute. Once I joined, it quickly became an important part of my life.

What does the Club mean to you?

Community! The swim community, in particular, is the foundation of my life at

the Club. I’m here most days—working out, seeing familiar faces, and staying connected—but those relationships extend well beyond the pool.

Over time, that sense of community has shaped how I think about improving the Club experience more broadly. In early 2021, participation in the swim program had been declining. Working with the pool chair and the Recreation Committee, we introduced the Sky Pool Pass to simplify access and encourage participation. Since its launch, attendance has increased significantly.

What’s special is how those connections continue outside the Club. I recently had lunch with a fellow Member in Fukuoka. Moments like that really show how these relationships keep expanding, regardless of where we are.

Why did you run for representative governor?

After serving on the Board for four years, particularly coming out of Covid, I felt the Club was at an important point. Traffic was returning, finances were stabilizing, and we had an opportunity to focus on growth rather than recovery. My motivation for running this year is tied to several substantial projects I’ve worked on, including the new Northstar club management system and the search and onboarding of our new general manager, Dustin McAvoy. With Jesse Green stepping down from the role of representative governor, it felt like the right time to step forward and help carry that work into its next phase.

How can technology enhance the Club experience?

I see three key areas for improvement.

First is empowerment. Historically, Members have often felt overly involved in governance because change moved slowly. By giving management and staff the tools and authority they need, we can move faster and reduce unnecessary friction.

Second is modernization. This is crucial.

Before Northstar, systems were fragmented, which made accessing information slow and inefficient. Now we’re starting to see real improvements, including a much faster month-end close process and better visibility into operations.

The third is the Member experience. Many simple tasks still require phone calls, which creates friction for both Members and staff.

Over time, technology should make interacting with the Club easier and more intuitive.

Coming from an athletic background, what changes do you envision for the recreation programs over the next year?

I anticipate positive changes. I’m particularly interested in supporting a more holistic and modern approach to wellness, and I’m excited to see what our new recreation director brings to the Club. I’m looking forward to supporting her in implementing the changes she believes

will strengthen the Club experience. Whether that’s evolving wellness services or making programs more flexible, engaging, and inclusive for all Members, my focus is on helping create the conditions for those ideas to succeed.

What do you see as positive changes in the Club recently? What more is needed this year?

Recent changes such as the arrival of a new general manager and the implementation of Northstar have brought fresh perspectives.

Dustin has been introducing Club experiences that we haven’t had before and empowering staff in his role as GM. That empowerment is key. I’d like to see management thinking creatively and strategically, supported by systems that allow ideas to be executed effectively. That includes how we use space, how we approach utilization, and how we respond to what

Members are actually asking for. I look forward to working with everybody on making these things happen.

What is the Club’s financial situation?

Overall, the Club is in a strong position. A healthier cash position and a well-established building maintenance reserve provide greater stability and flexibility, allowing us to address challenges without disruption and continue modernizing our facilities.

That stability also gives us the space to think long term and engage Members in deciding what kind of Club we want to be. Rather than reacting to short-term pressures, we can focus on thoughtful planning and make deliberate investments in the programs, spaces, and experiences that will define the Club’s future.

What are your thoughts on the upcoming centennial?

We’ve established the Centennial Committee and tasked it with organizing events to celebrate the Club’s rich history. It’s important for everyone to understand that in just two years, we’ll celebrate our 100th anniversary.

This is a milestone worth honoring, as it allows us to reflect on where the Club began, how far we’ve come in the past 20 years, and what we aspire to become in the next 20 or even 30 years.

This is an exciting time to be part of the Club. While I will no longer be representative governor for the centennial, I’m eager to contribute to the buildup. I look forward to playing my role in this significant journey. It’s going to be a blast!

Three Club trainers share tips for keeping that New Year’s resolution on track.

Flipping the calendar to January often reveals a particular resolution: getting fit. The energy of a new year and the memory of maybe a bit too much eggnog make heading to the Fitness Center easy. But maintaining that drive can be a challenge.

To help Members make 2026 a year of change, INTOUCH talked to three veteran Club trainers: Yuko Furuya, Hideaki Hongo, and Robert Daoust.

Furuya, a certified athletic trainer who worked for a decade in California before joining the Club in 2013, says one of the best ways to achieve your New Year’s goals is to pick a few things you can easily do and make sure to do something every day, no matter how small. “If you want to develop beautiful posture,” says the structural alignment and injury rehabilitation specialist, “even something as small as paying attention to keeping your pelvis upright while eating is perfectly enough.”

To keep herself on track, Furuya writes down her accomplishments in a journal. “Doing this helps me continue without strain, boosts my motivation, and—most importantly—makes the process enjoyable.”

Setting targets that are simple, realistic, and fun is the key advice from Hongo, a lifelong kendo athlete from Ibaraki who has been training Members at the Club since 2003. “Small, consistent habits create meaningful longterm results. It’s important to choose something you can maintain throughout the year, rather than starting with a goal that is too demanding.”

Québec native Daoust—a member of the Club team since 2005—agrees that people often try to do too much too soon and give up. “Start with small, important steps and keep an eye on the long-term goal,” he says.

“The results should speak for themselves. If you get results, it means you are on the right track. If you’re determined and disciplined, the results will come for sure.”

All three trainers are eager Hideaki Hongo to help.

Hongo, a sports aroma conditioning therapist and a certified Yamuna body rolling practitioner, says helping people improve their health and fitness is incredibly rewarding. “When Members achieve their goals—whether it’s reducing pain, gaining strength, overcoming injuries, or simply feeling better in their daily lives—it inspires me to continue to support them.”

For Daoust, who originally came to Japan to study karate under high-ranking instructors and alongside toplevel competitors, it’s the Club’s international atmosphere that fuels his passion for sharing what he has learned, teaching strong foundational movement, corrective exercises, and mobility.

The diversity of the membership is also inspirational for Furuya. “Working with clients from many backgrounds, with different fitness levels and personal goals, is so different from the days when I worked exclusively with athletes. It has been incredibly enjoyable. Each time I meet someone new, I get to think, explore, and challenge myself to figure out how I can best support them.”

Running the World Member Yaxin Hu recounts how she ran the world’s most celebrated marathon gauntlet.

Last November, I crossed the finish line

in New York and finally reached a goal I had been chasing for years: to complete all six World Marathon Majors.

Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York are considered the sport’s most prestigious races. Finishing them all earns a runner the Abbott Six Star medal.

Finishing the circuit in about three years is considered an incredible feat for many highly dedicated runners. For me, the journey took nine. During those years, I started four companies spanning real estate investment, student housing, and a boutique hotel, had three children, and returned to university.

Looking back, it feels less like a race and more like a long, steady project I refused to quit.

My first full marathon was in Dubai.

A high school classmate told me he was running it, and we had always been academic rivals. I thought, “If you can do it, I can do it.” I trained for four months, flew to Dubai, battled the heat, and finished. That small victory made me fall in love with the distance.

Marathons became a way to experience places more deeply. You arrive, eat local food, meet friends, and feel the culture through the streets you run. You don’t just visit a place—you move through it.

After I delivered my first baby, I flew to the United States and ran the Chicago Marathon just 40 days later.

Most people are still recovering at that point. I told myself that if I felt bad, I would stop. Instead, I finished. That race convinced me that years of training—and walking two hours a day during pregnancy—had made my body much stronger than I realized.

Marathon season is usually in winter and spring, so during the off-season I focus on building strength. I visit the Azabudai Fitness Center two to four times a week to train my legs and glutes, and I work with a trainer once a month.

I joined the Club three to four years ago because it offers everything I need: a gym, sauna, good food, parking, and

spaces for meetings and study. It has become part of my daily rhythm. After dropping off my children at school, I often train, have breakfast, then head for a quiet corner sofa in the Library that almost no one uses. It has become my study spot as I finish my degree at Temple University, Japan Campus. For someone who loves continuous learning, that spot is priceless.

Marathons have also shaped how I lead my businesses.

Anyone who finishes one learns persistence. Business goes up and down. Cash flow changes. Projects fall through. My heart stays calm. When things go well, I’m happy but not overly excited. When they go badly, I accept it and keep moving. That steady mindset comes directly from long hours on the road.

Finishing the six majors was a huge milestone, but it isn’t the end. Sydney has just become the newest major, and I already have a sponsored entry for the 2026 race. After that, I want to explore scenic marathons in places like Paris and Cape Town. As long as I can keep running, I’ll keep setting new goals—one start line at a time.

Liverpool FC Soccer Apart from increasing physical fitness, team sports play a key role in kids’ cognitive development. A 2024 analysis of 12 studies published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that soccer training had significant effects on attention, inhibitory control, and working memory.

In this class, which follows the world-renowned Liverpool FC coaching methodology, students will build these while mastering soccer fundamentals such as game intelligence, movement, ball mastery, and one-on-one creativity. They will also develop social and leadership skills that transfer to all aspects of life for better teamwork, communication, behavior, and problem-solving.

Every session is structured to be fun, energetic, and age-appropriate, blending individual skill development with exciting game-based challenges— the same environment used across all Liverpool FC International Academy Japan venues.

When I look back on the path that led me to

establish the Run for the Cure Foundation (RFTC Japan), I realize it began long before there was a name, a team, or even a clear vision. It began the moment I heard the words no woman ever wants to hear: “You have breast cancer.”

My diagnosis changed everything. It shook my sense of safety, my plans, and my understanding of my own body.

Overnight I went from being someone who supported others to someone who needed support myself. In those early moments, I felt fear—but also determination. I knew that if I survived, I wanted to make sure no woman in Japan would ever feel alone, uninformed, or unseen on her breast health journey.

Going through treatment was a test of strength I never expected to face. Chemotherapy, surgeries, recovery—each step forced me to confront both vulnerability and resilience.

There were days when my body felt foreign, when the fatigue was overwhelming, and when uncertainty loomed large. But I also discovered hope in unexpected places: in the kindness of medical staff, in the quiet support of friends, and in the unwavering love of my family. Surviving breast cancer didn’t just save my life; it reframed it. It taught me the power of community, information, and early detection. And it ignited a responsibility in me.

When I moved to Japan, I was struck by the silence surrounding breast cancer. Women rarely talked about it openly. Awareness materials were limited. Many women didn’t know what screening options existed, and some felt cultural pressure to face health challenges privately. Early on, I spoke with women who avoided screenings out of fear, embarrassment, or a belief that breast cancer “wouldn’t happen to them.” Hearing these stories reminded me of my own early fears—and strengthened my resolve.

I founded RFTC Japan because I knew Japan needed a space where awareness, education, and compassion could thrive. I wanted to create a platform that brought women together, encouraged honest conversations, and provided lifesaving information. The idea was simple: empower women with knowledge, encourage early detection, and support those navigating treatment and survivorship.

What began as a personal mission slowly grew into a community movement.

Our signature events—especially the Pink Ball and our annual runs—are more than fundraisers. They are celebrations of life, courage, and unity. They honor survivors, remember those we’ve lost, and energize the fight for a future where breast cancer is detected early and treated effectively. Every time I see a survivor cross a finish line or watch families gather in pink to show their support, I’m reminded of why this work matters.

Today, RFTC Japan stands as a testament to the belief that one person’s experience can spark change. My breast cancer journey could have ended with survival alone—but I chose to transform it into purpose. I started this foundation so no woman in Japan would face breast cancer in silence. Awareness saves lives, and together, we are rewriting what it means to face this disease—with strength, community, and hope.
