The next three months see the arrival of the LTA’s much heralded Great British Tennis Weekends – the aim of which are to get more people playing tennis and just to have fun! The dates have been chosen to take place in the build up to the excitement of the Wimbledon Championships, trying to convert the excitement generated by our world class players down to grass roots level.

The 2014 Great British Tennis Weekends follow the success of last year’s one off Great British Tennis Weekend (GBTW) which saw over 7,500 people take to the courts of 39 venues on a single weekend. This year there are more than 1,500 venues!

Events are taking place across the county over four weekends from May to July, and they are just our part in the hundreds of Open Days which are to take place throughout the country.

Tennis venues are offering free tennis and coaching for people of all ages and abilities and the days are being promoted by the LTA across all media to try to help promote our sport and our clubs.

If you have not organised an event yet or want to do more, it’s not too late, and quite easy, to get something organised. In many cases existing open days can be staged as part of an existing open day promotional strategy.

Halton Tennis Centre is typical of one of those already organising events and on the first Great British Tennis Weekend this month is offering adult coaching sessions, mini tennis, cardio tennis and junior tennis.

Marlow Tennis Club have already organised some open days in GET INVO the run up to the GBTWs, one of which, they say, was a complete LVE 17-1 8 MA D wash-out (which should be anticipated with our Great British tennis 21-2 Y 2 weather!) but the other added some 20 members so far, thanks to 28-2 JUNE 9 JU their promotional efforts through the town.

THE 18U BOYS COUNTY CUP REPORT Teams from Bucks, Suffolk, Devon and Hampshire took part in the 3-day 18U Boys County Cup, held in Bromley, Kent, earlier this year. Each match consisted of six singles matches, followed by three doubles, and each tie ran from 9am to 5pm each day, with teams warming up and preparing for their matches from 8am.

On day one the Bucks team took on old enemies Hampshire, and thanks to wins in the singles (from Calum McKinlay, Barnaby Smith, and Jack Molloy) and in all three doubles matches, the team came away with a resounding 7–2 win. However, Suffolk had gone one better and won 8–1.

On day two the Bucks team faced new opponents Devon who proved tough competition, but eventually the team won 5–4. Suffolk won again however, meaning a promotion play-off loomed next day (although that prospect was far less concerning than the relegation play-offs of the previous 3 years!).

Things took a dramatic turn at 2.30am on the morning of day three; earlier that evening Tom Schmidt had phoned NHS Direct with chest pains, only to be told to go immediately to Urgent Care for an ECG and blood test.

Fortunately, he was diagnosed with a simple viral infection, which commonly causes tightness in the chest.

Despite this drama the team managed to stay largely focused through an exceptionally tense roller coaster third day, which saw the singles finish with a tie 3–3, but then Bucks going on to win all three doubles matches to claim victory.

the Captain was allowed on court to speak to the players at the change of ends. The boys were perfectly behaved and acted very professionally on and off court. To win this event was a culmination of a lot of effort by many people, and the feeling at the end was ‘it doesn’t get better than this’ – particularly after 3 years of relegation play-offs,” said Team Coach Andy Sarsfield.

BUCKS DISABILITY TENNIS NETWORK DOUBLES MEMBERSHIP Halton’s Head of Disability Tennis, Tom Wood, has recently reported excellent stats from Bucks Disability Tennis Network for the months of January to March to the Tennis Foundationh.

Since the previous quarter the numbers have gone up from 188 to 387, an increase of 100%. This means the Bucks Disability Tennis Network is now delivering tennis to nearly 400 disabled players across the county, of which Halton’s Inclusive Programme has 167 disabled people playing tennis on a weekly basis, and a further 136 playing monthly, giving a grand total of 303 playing regularly at either Halton, within local SEN schools, or at other organisations.

The remaining 84 are playing tennis in Milton Keynes, Radlett, and High Wycombe under the Bucks Disability Tennis Network banner.

The Network is on target to hit the 600 mark by the end of the summer, with another school in Aylesbury coming on line in May, and the Milton Keynes Inclusive Programme set to expand its number of sessions from five to 20 over the coming months.

GREAT MISSENDEN LAWN TENNIS CLUB

A MR AND MRS TOURNAMENT

You could be forgiven for thinking that 8 March was the beginning of the new season, rather than nearing the end of the winter one. The weather and the vibe at Great Missenden Lawn Tennis Club (GMLTC) could not have been better, with the introduction of a new tournament to the diary of events.

Eighteen legitimate couples (no wife swapping allowed!) took part in a fun tournament during the afternoon with box leagues. After some very closely fought matches in the first round, the running order

was established for the second round, ensuring some competitive tennis at all levels. This was a great opportunity for the Club to welcome new members and help them to meet established members.

Overall winners of the day were Rowan and Andy Fyfe, and the runners-up were John and Catherine Santamaria.

It was good to see new faces at the tournament, and GMLTC provided some childminding to allow the parents to play.

The clubhouse resembled a mini playgroup, with activities such as cookery,

Plasticine, and balloon fun, all entertaining the children. The childminding aspect was warmly welcomed, and something the Club would like to do again.

The afternoon finished off with traditional homemade cakes, of which the Club do very well, and some mugs of hot tea.

Huge thanks to the childminding crew, Erin and Holly, the providers of the cakes, and the organisers Mr and Mrs Wingfield; but most of all, the participants who made it such an enjoyable afternoon of tennis.

SUNNY GRADE 4 EASTER TOURNAMENT Chesham 1879’s Easter Tournament attracted a good entry of 93 players. The weather was tremendous, with sunshine all week. A number of players were enjoying their first experience of a tournament outside their own club, and there were many positive and encouraging performances. It was an enjoyable week, culminating in some competitive finals. It was also good to see complete consolation draws taking place.

• 12 Boys Singles winner was Angus Creighton (Chesham Bois), runner-up Lucas Bartlett (Windsor).

• 10 Boys Singles winner was Gregor Webster (Maidenhead), runner-up Edward Hunt (GXBL).

• 9 Boys Singles winner was Jacob Mellows (GXBL), runner-up William Eckford (Halton).

• 8 Boys Singles winner was Bligh Salter (Chesham 1879), runner-up Alexander Groom (Chesham Bois).

The tournament referees were Malcolm and Janet Jamieson. The setting at Chesham 1879 was idyllic, alongside the stream with the weeping willow trees, and the sound of the ducks, which had an excellent view of the tournament!

LITTLE CHALFONT TENNIS CLUB’S SUCCESS Little Chalfont Tennis Club, one of our Small Places to Play, is on the Regional Leader board Top 20 for Regularly Competing Juniors (RCJs) with some of the national tennis centres!

With just six courts, two of them floodlit, Lt Chalfont Tennis Club has headed our Bucks RCJ table for Small Places to Play for eight months.

Mid table in December 2012 with just 14 youngsters on 6+ matches; they leapt to the top of the Small Places to Play in August 2013 with

63 juniors on 6+ matches and 24 on 20+. Lt Chalfont first made the Regional rankings in February 2014 and in April are delighted to be on both the 6+ and 20+ Regional leader boards in the exalted company of large Places to Play.

“I’m really pleased that so many juniors are playing so regularly,” said delighted Junior organiser, Alison Smith. Congratulations to Head Coach, Colin Williams, who runs a wide range of drop in sessions, Squads and Matchplay events.

SUCCESS IN THE 8&U INTERCOUNTY EVENT

At Gosling Sports Park, Hertfordshire, the Bucks U18 girls were virtually on home turf for the Aegon U18 County Cup. The team was feeling confident, even at 6am on a Friday morning!

Great names like Georgie “The Assassin” Sanders, Alice “Pinpoint” Patch, Lauren “The Ice Woman” Armstrong, Lauren “Sparkey” King-Sparke, Natasha “Burier” Bierrum, Beth “Ball Machine” Marriott, Hannah “Rottweiler” Russell, and Annie “The Wise” Westermann were all under one roof for two nights only, led to glory by Jemima “Killer” King.

The first day saw Nottingham defeated 6–3 but, alas, the second and third were less successful, with a narrow defeat at the hands of Essex on the Saturday, and losing 5–4 to Kent on the final day.

We took a group picture and went home. Either JJ’s green pompoms, Lauren’s irremovable foot on the pedal, or our abstinence from clubbing set us two rubbers above the Essex girls in the end to leave us in second place, safely in Group 2 for another year (we thought

it would be nice to let the boys feel like equals at least once).

“I am very proud of all the girls; they all brought energy, enthusiasm, spirit and passion to the weekend. Everyone brought something to the team, and we showed our dominance on the doubles courts winning 6 out of

8. It was a great result to come second, and we look forward to coming back stronger next year,” said team captain Jemima King.

The County Cup event is an important part of British Tennis, and it is a vital event to keep players in the game, especially girls. To be in a team, cheering each other on, playing for your teammates, representing your county, having support, and learning from your captain at the change of ends, are all reasons why this event is so important.

For any players looking to play US college tennis, this is the perfect setting in which to see what it is all about. County week, Aegon Team tennis and UK university tennis are all team events in which our players take part and which make them better team players because of County Cup.

Eight visually impaired tennis players from Metro Tennis in Islington recently visited Halton for a tennis match against six players from Milton Keynes and Halton. The blind and visually impaired players travelled from London by train, and were met at Wendover Station by club volunteers, Rachel and David Barnett, along with Tom Wood who ferried the visitors to Halton.

The players were briefed on the format of the match by Alex Barnes, Halton’s Head Disability Coach, and split into four groups based on their levels of vision. There were 60 short 7-minute matches in total, played in a tiebreak format within round-robin groups, after which Odette Battarel from Metro played Sarah Fortescue from Milton Keynes in the B2 (partially sighted) final, with Battarel prevailing in a closelyfought match. Peter Bosher from Halton was the top player in the B1 class (totally blind), and Kseniya Blake from Milton Keynes won the prize for sportsmanship for her positive approach to the match. Following the tennis, players and coaches enjoyed a traditional “tennis tea” in Halton’s Club House, and Tom thanked everyone for making the event such a fantastic success.

On Sunday 6 April the 8&U Intercounty event took place at Gosling International High Performance Centre.

This year there were 10 counties involved in the regional event, with Berkshire and Oxfordshire recently joining the East region.

They joined the usual counties of Hertfordshire, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, and, of course, Bucks. Each team consisted of six girls and six boys, with the girls’ event taking place in the morning, and the boys’ event in the afternoon.

At the end of the day a county was named overall champion – depending on the final position of the girls’ and boys’ teams in their separate events.

The 10 counties were split into two round robin boxes of five, with the winners and runnersup playing semi-finals and final, with a third/ fourth play-off. The third and fourth place teams would do the same draw

to decide fifth-eighth places. Finally the fifth place teams would play to decide on ninth and tenth places. During the group stages, counties got two points for a match win, and one point for a draw.

In the girls’ event Bucks were drawn against Suffolk, Oxfordshire, Northamptonshire, and Essex. Our very competitive team of Aneka Patel, Millie Day, Ashni Sangha, Esme Ivory, Bella Adama, and Attie Binnie were nervous going into the first match. However, their nerves were settled with a 5–1 win, which

included Day (#2) winning 10–0, and Ivory (#4) winning 10–1!

Next up was Oxfordshire, with Bucks getting a convincing 6–0 win, followed by a 5–1 victory over Northamptonshire, and Bucks took a 6–0 win in the final match against Essex to finish the group stages unbeaten, securing a semi-final match against Cambridgeshire. This proved a tense match ending in a 3–3 draw, but Bucks won on points and were through to the final against Hertfordshire, which was another draw.

As the points were added up Hertordshire won by four points, leaving the Bucks girls slightly disappointed, but also happy that they got the silver medal!

As the girls finished the boys arrived, and were soon on court warming up. The boys were drawn against Suffolk, Essex, Berkshire and Oxfordshire.

In the first match against Suffolk the boys started well, with Joshua Oakley (#1) and Fraser Reeves (#2), they then lost two, but finished with a 4–2 win.

Next up was Essex, with six closely fought matches that ended with a 3–3 draw, which was repeated against Berkshire in the next match, and Oxfordshire in the final match. This was enough to move forward to play Hertfordshire in the semifinals – unfortunately losing 4–2! The final match was, therefore, against Northamptonshire.

In the play-off matches for third and fourth places, which went again to a 3–3 draw, the Bucks boys had edged ahead by five

Stoke Park has installed four brand new artificial clay courts to replace the centre’s former allweather astro courts.

The surface of the new courts is Advantage RedCourt, manufactured by EDEL Grass B.V., which uses a ceramic-treated infill that totally fills the stability mat.

The stability mat has a polyethylene yarn for

low sliding resistance, whilst the play lines are made using a special white yarn, which gives higher durability and improved visibility.

This surface provides a highly practical alternative to traditional clay courts, but with a similar appearance and play characteristics.

Unlike traditional clay, as Advantage RedCourt is designed for year-round

points, which lead to a third place overall. After the boys’ presentation, the overall trophy was awarded to the county with the best results from both the boys and girls competitions added together. Hertfordshire having won the girls, and coming second in the boys, took the trophy, but Bucks (second in the girls and third in the boys) came joint second with Essex (fourth in the girls and first in the boys – a fantastic result!

A very well done to all the players, and a thank you for all their hard work in training, and on the day.

A massive thank you also goes to all the parents and Venetia Cosier for their support and cheering throughout the day. Finally a special mention goes to the other 15 players that have taken part in the training sessions this year but were not selected for the event, as you helped to make the training sessions fantastic.

Let’s see if Bucks can go one better next year and take the overall trophy!

REFURBISHED COURTS TO WIDMER END DEVELOP TENNIS FOR ALL SIGN UP NEW MEMBERS without having to commit to an annual membership. Part of the initiative run by MK Inclusive Tennis and MK City Tennis will also be to provide taster sessions in schools, to increase opportunities to access tennis from an early age.

“I am delighted that Academy students are going to be able to benefit from the refurbished tennis courts, and that we are able to extend this opportunity to the wider community by working in partnership with the Lawn Tennis Association,” said Dara Carroll, Principle at MK Academy.

“Tennis is one of the few sports you can play at any age, and our mission at the Lawn Tennis Association is to get more people playing tennis more often.

MINI TENNIS TOURNAMENT AT PRINCES RISBOROUGH There was a great tournament at Princes Risborough on Saturday 8 March when eight red ball mini tennis players from Long Crendon and Wendover took on eight players from Princes Risborough. There was some great tennis on show, with 64 mini

matches played in total. Everyone enjoyed themselves, with the eventual overall win going to Long Crendon and Wendover.

On Saturday 5 April, Widmer End Lawn Tennis Club held its first open day of the season.

It was a great success with good weather – comparing very favourably with the same event a year previously, when by contrast members had to shovel snow to clear one of the courts. This year it was sun, sun, and more sun.

The Club’s “Living Tennis” Coach Ben came along and held free sessions for all ages. All of the participants had lots of fun and really enjoyed themselves, with big smiles and plenty of laughter

throughout the afternoon.

The Club also borrowed the LTA speed machine, which also caused a lot of hilarity.

The top speed reached was 80mph – WOW. As a result of the open day, Widmer End had 12 existing juniors, four new juniors, four new adults, and one returning adult sign-up for the coming season. This was not officially sign-up day for existing members, but it was great to see them come along too.

Widmer End’s next open day is Sunday 1 June during the afternoon.

MIXED A TEAM SUCCESS & OPEN DAY Newport Pagnell Tennis Club is enjoying great success with its Mixed A team, having won the MK Winter Mixed Adult League 2013–14, remaining undefeated all season.

This happy position reflects the commitment and consistency of the team, who have enjoyed a great winter season against all the fantastic competitive clubs around Milton Keynes, who have

OVER 70 KIDS IN TENNIS MATCHPLAY!

With the weather improving and the sun shining, over 70 youngsters made their way to Stony Stratford Tennis Club on Sunday 23 March for the Tennis MK Junior Matchplay and Mini Tennis Festival.

Tennis MK is a local organisation that organises local competitions and leagues for tennis clubs in and around Milton Keynes. This event was the finale to the winter junior tennis season, where children from the local clubs could come and compete against others of similar age and ability.

It all kicked off at 10am, with players in the 12&U, 14&U, and 16&U competing in groups.

Newport Pagnell Tennis Club is hosting an open day on Chris Miller sporting the

Four tennis courts in Milton Keynes have been resurfaced, and have just reopened for the public for the first time in nearly a decade!

MK Inclusive Tennis and MK City Tennis, in partnership with MK Academy and Bucks Lawn Tennis Association, have come together to restore the courts to their former glory, enabling access for both pupils and the local community. This marks the first step in their joint venture to make tennis accessible and affordable to all in the town.

MK Inclusive Tennis (mkinclusivetennis. co.uk) is a not-for-profit organisation, founded in 2014, delivering tennis to disabled or socially-disadvantaged young people and adults in Milton Keynes. They will be sharing the courts with MK City Tennis, who will be helping more people access affordable tennis sessions in Milton Keynes by running pay-and-play sessions for adults, enabling access to tennis regularly,

aged between 4 and 9 years came and enjoyed 2 hours of fun, games, and matches with the Tennis Works coaches.

“It was an incredible day, and to see so many kids playing tennis is wonderful,” said the Vice Chairman of Tennis MK and the tournament referee, Pete Tolaini. “Tennis is such a great game that can be enjoyed by everyone, so it doesn’t matter what your level you should still get involved.

Today was about getting children from many clubs together, and I hope that they have gone away with smiles on their faces and are thirsty for more competition soon.”

SENIOR COUNTY LADIES PLAY AT ALL ENGLAND CLUB WIMBLEDON Following Bucks’ historic first county week win, four players from the team were invited to play a match against Wimbledon members on the 22 March.

Julia Bone, Jemima King, Claire Webb, and Alice Patch took on a strong Wimbledon team, which included former Women’s Tennis Association top 50 player Anne Keothavong.

The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all, with supporters having a tour of the ground and the museum, and the players using the members’ changing rooms. The Club kindly put on a lovely lunch at the end.

The Buckinghamshire ladies would like to thank the All England Club for the invitation.

PRLTC WINS TROPHIES GALORE! Princes Risborough Lawn Tennis Club (PRLTC) was awarded no less than FOUR trophies at the recent presentation evening held by the Aylesbury & District Tennis League.

The first three were for winning Mixed Divisions 2 and 4 in the 2012–13 Winter Floodlight Season, and Mixed Division 3 in the 2013 Summer Season.

The final trophy of the evening is given to the club that the League’s committee feels has made the greatest improvement over the past 12 months … and this year it was presented to PRLTC! “We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this trophy. It is a great achievement for the Club, and a fantastic recognition of our continued development, both on and off the court,” said Chairman Lindsay Smith.

Representatives of the club’s Mixed teams, Captain Gertruud van Dijken and Sally Sculfor, attended the presentation evening at Risborough Golf Club to accept the trophies on behalf of the Club.

HALTON’S INCLUSIVE TENNIS IS THE BEST Halton beat off 40 other Disability Tennis Networks from across the UK for the award of Disability Network of the Year.

NEW JUNIOR TENNIS PROGRAMME Stoke Park’s new Junior Tennis Programme, available for nonmembers, offers children from 4–17 years of age the opportunity to develop their tennis skills through the LTA’s Mini Tennis Rating Scheme.

Mini tennis is a great way for juniors to take their first steps into tennis, and offers more chances to compete against players of a similar standard.

All junior age groups from 8 years and under, to 18 years and under, are defined by the competition seasons. The Programme takes place after school and during term-time. Juniors will join a term at a time, and junior equipment is available for hire from the Reception.

VETS TOURNAMENT AT STONY STRATFORD Tennis Club recently hosted a Vets Tournament. After days of rain the Club was blessed with a sunny day and had 30 people, including players from Newport Pagnell, Wolverton, Woburn Sands, and Olney in attendance.

The Tournament was followed by a buffet lunch, and many thanks go to the ladies and gentlemen who cooked and supplied a splendid meal.
