The new ski season is getting ever closer and as more images of ever-snowier scenes are beamed into InTheSnow HQ from ski slopes around the world, it’s hard not to get excited. In fact, several dozen snowsure ski areas have already begun their 2019/20 ski seasons, and the annual World Cup ski and snowboard tours, which will cross the Atlantic several times over the next six months, are already underway. For most of us, though, all eyes are on the snow reports for the next month or two when we hope for plenty of late autumn/ early winter snow so that the slopes are in great shape by the time we arrive on our annual trips. So here’s hoping for the next few months. In this issue of InTheSnow, we profile one lady who has managed to ski every month of the year for the past 10 years without even leaving the UK. You can read about the incredible achievement of Helen Rennie from Inverness who hikes miles across the Cairngorm mountains in late summer and early autumn each year, carrying her skis, to find even tiny snow patches in order to make a few turns and keep up her remarkable odyssey. That, for me, is a true hero skiing with real dedication. Sadly, Helen is having a harder and harder time finding snow patches on the Scottish mountains, surviving from one year to the next as climate change takes its toll. But ski resorts are doing more and more to try and fight back, and in our SaveOurSnow column this issue, there’s the good news that four of the six largest ski regions in France are now powered by green electricity, with the latest to switch, the Sybelles region, moving to energy from local hydro as well as wind and solar sources. Let’s hope those efforts generate good karma for a snowy (but not too snowy) winter ahead.

As light pollution continues to blot out the night sky for more and more people in their daily lives, a new dimension to a winter mountain holiday is emerging. The stars – or the Northern Lights – are often much easier to see in the mountains. Indeed, some ski areas had observatories built on their mountain tops even before the skiers arrived. But some resorts are better for stargazers than others, so here are some of the best:

Austria’s Tirol region is home to some of the world’s best ski resorts and some of the biggest ski areas in the Alps too. But it’s also home to lots of smaller, less well-known, off-thebeaten-track ski destinations that can provide just as many incredible holiday memories.

For Apres-Ski Fun & An Active Winter Holiday Ischgl Ischgl’s motto is “relax if you can” and with 239km of perfectly groomed slopes served by 45 of the world’s most state-of-theart cable cars to whisk you back up the slopes, a reputation for challenging runs and great off-piste freeride terrain and slopes up to 11km long, that can be hard to do, but you will have an awful lot of fun. It’s much the same in the evening with Ischgl’s reputation for some of the best après-ski bars and night clubs in the Alps.

SKIING TOGETHER AFTER A BABY WORDS: BETONY GARNER

When I met my boyfriend seven years ago, I was a little worried. He was funny, good looking, got on with my parents, but … he couldn’t ski! As someone who couldn’t get enough of the white stuff, there was no way he wasn’t going to get swept up in what can only be described as an addiction. Luckily, after just one week on the slopes, that addiction spread and ever since, skiing has become our most-loved joint activity. Two years ago, when I found out I was pregnant I was obviously overjoyed, but also a little anxious. Not just about the birth (or having to look after a baby!) but about how we could all carry on skiing together. So when our daughter was born, along with discussing when we could buy her first pair of skis, we tried to work out how we could carry on enjoying our time together on the slopes. Although “tagteaming” with the baby means you can both get a decent amount

So with some apprehension, last January we travelled to Söll and on day one arrived at KiKo to leave our 13-month daughter in their care for a morning. NEW CHAIRLIFT FOR FORMIGAL One of Spain’s largest ski areas at Formigal is to get a new chairlift. This new lift, to be built towards the northeast of the resort’s existing Izas area, was approved by local officials last month and will further increase the resort’s hourly uplift capacity, currently 50,000 people. Along with the new lift, the red Pala de Escarra piste will be reshaped.

The leading ski holiday company Inghams has joined the small number of British companies offering ski holidays to Japan. “Japan sits on many skiers’ bucket lists for its incredible snow and skiing possibilities, blended with fascinating ancient culture, wonderful sights and mouth-watering cuisine,” said Frankie Gibson from Inghams. Unusually, compared to existing British operators to the company, Inghams have opted to sidestep

N O Z A W A O N S E N

the most common Japanese destination of Niseko, on the northerly island of Hokkaido, and have instead gone for two of the country’s biggest and longest-established ski areas on the largest island of Honshu, where capital Tokyo is located, a direct flight from the UK. Nozawa Onsen is a delightful resort, which started life as a hot spring village for resting travellers, with the first onsen (traditional Japanese bath house) constructed in the 16th century. Today, the onsens are still managed by the local people and are very much part of their culture. Skiing was introduced to Japan at Nozawa in the 1930s by pioneering Austrian skier Hannes Schneider from the Arlberg region. Inghams are also offering the Hakuba Valley, which was a key location in the 1998 Nagano Olympics and spans 10 diverse ski areas, all included in one lift pass (included in the price of an Inghams holiday). Inghams guests will be able to stay in the main resort of Happo-One, with easy bus links accessing the other resorts. Accommodation in these resorts ranges from more Western in style to traditional Japanese-style hotels with communal onsens, offering a choice for all who seek convenience, comfort and an authentic, cultural stay. This forever-evolving, vibrant country offers plenty to discover beyond the ski runs: guests can lose themselves in fascinating experiences such as getting sucked into the bright lights of Tokyo or the tranquillity of the temples in Kyoto, paying their respects in Hiroshima and spotting the snow monkeys at Jigokudani. Inghams ski holidays to Japan therefore also encompass an immersive city break. Combinations and durations are flexible, with the option to ski in either one of Inghams’ ski resorts and add on Kyoto, which was the imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years. All trips start with at least one night in Tokyo. Inghams offers a five-night trip to Tokyo and Hakuba from £1,869pp based on two sharing. Price includes return flights (direct from London Heathrow), coach transfers, accommodation with en-suite facilities, five breakfasts and a lift pass. The package is valid for travel departing on 14 December 2019, 29 February 2020, and 7 or 14 March 2020.

VERMONT TO SAVE 1.77BN TONS OF CO2

WATCH NOW

Vermont has long been a leader in the “Green Movement” by promoting best practices regarding the environment. That same ideology is a guiding force throughout the state’s ski industry. Efficiency is a top priority in the design and implementation of everything from snowmaking and equipment to the utensils in base lodge eateries. A recent Vermont Ski Areas Energy Savings Impact Report from Efficiency Vermont revealed that Vermont ski areas have completed 668 projects since 2000, including low-e snowguns, compressed air right sizing, lift terminal heater controls, thermal shells and many other systems and improvements. The anticipated lifetime savings of these projects combined is more than 989 million kilowatt hours of electricity – equivalent to the power used by 400,000 homes annually – and 1.77 billion tons of CO2 equivalent. The avoided lifetime costs to the Vermont ski industry are estimated at more than $175 million (around £138 million).

BOMBARDINO

Everywhere

Bormio | Livigno | Italy

Glühwein has conquered the world now, but it’s still very welcome for most skiers after a cold day on the slopes. Essentially a mulled wine, it’s usually mixed with lemons, oranges, sugar, cloves, water and some cinnamon sticks. The secret to getting a great glühwein is reputed to be the right mixture of red wine, cinnamon sticks, sugar, oranges and cloves. All are heated up together to near boiling for

Translated literally (and accurately) as “the bomb” from Italian, il Bombardino is a popular aprésski drink in Italy, particularly in Lombardy, where it was created. It’s a warm winter cocktail, essentially, a little reminiscent of eggnog. Legend has it that Bombardino was created by a ski lodge owner in Lombardy who had to think quickly when four skiers staggered in out of a blizzard in need of a major pick-me-up. He threw together a mixture of milk, whisky and (the key ingredient) zabaglione (an eggbased custard). Knocking it back, the skiers declared “una bomba!” (“a bomb!”).

HOT TODDY

Park City | USA or Anywhere A hot toddy is as warming pick-meup that usually mixes whisky, honey, lemon and hot water. You can buy one in almost any ski bar but it’s particularly special when sampled at the High West Distillery on Park City’s Main Street in Utah. This distillery opened right at the base of the ski lifts at the biggest ski area in America after Utah dropped strict drinking laws some years ago. In fact it was the first new distillery in Utah since 1870. Their hot toddy recipe incorporates 1.5oz of their American Prairie Bourbon. They muddle two lemon slices in a goblet, add all other ingredients and stir then garnish with a cinnamon stick.

FLÜGEL Everywhere Flügel is described as a “party shooter” by its Dutch manufacturers and first came to prominence in the mid-1990s in Europe’s aprés-ski bars, later spreading to the club scene. Based on red vodka with a 10% alcohol content in a 20ml bottle, part of its success is believed to be the ritual that has developed with the drink – this involves tapping the bottle several times on the bar, then placing its cap on your nose to balance as you knock back the drink.

WASABI MARGARITA Niseko | Japan

Japanese après-ski drinks can include local craft beers, sake, Japanese whisky and, for a novel twist, the wasabi margarita. An acquired taste, but loved by those who do acquire it, the standard margarita mix of tequila and triple sec is embellished with wasabi paste to taste. Drinkers are reputed to love a wasabi margarita simply because of the uniqueness of it, plus the taste is both sweet and spicy, so should appeal to everyone. The drink is also served to accompany sushi and is reputed to bring out the flavour. What’s not to love?

TOFFEE VODKA

SCHNAPPS

Val D’isere | France Toffee-flavoured vodka mixes have been, and are still to this day, rife in experimentation in the bars and restaurants of Val d’Isère. About a decade ago a company called “Scream” launched what they claim is the first bottled version of the concoction Thunder Toffee + Vodka, claiming to have finally successfully developed a recipe that satisfies in both vodka strength and toffee syrup delicacy. “Thunder is the culmination of many years of mixing and meticulous preparation to find the perfect consistent toffee and vodka spirit drink, which could be bottled, branded and introduced to the drinks industry,” a company statement reads.

GRAPPA

Everywhere

Italy

A universal welcome drink at mountain huts, particularly across the German-speaking Eastern Alps, there are thousands of variants on the schnapps recipe created by farmers across Europe and served up in family-run restaurants each winter. Many are a kind of fruit brandy or herbal liquer that can be produced using local berries or herbs and often have a bitter taste, as well as quite a kick. In Austria and Switzerland, a type of fruit brandy schnapps called Obstler or Obstbrand is very popular.

Wherever you go in the Italian mountains, a shot of grappa is not far away. In many family-run mountain restaurants the grappa is homemade and proudly offered as a free welcome aperitif. Beware that this grape-based brandy may contain up to 60% alcohol by volume. The flavour varies widely depending on the type and quality of the grapes used, the distillation process and which fruit or herbs have been mixed in. You may see the locals knocking back a caffè corretto (an espresso coffee with a shot of grappa) to get the day started each morning.

The era of needing to fit in with an old-fashioned tour operator’s idea of how a ski holiday should work is, thankfully, long gone. But you may not realise just how far we’ve come and how incredibly flexible your ski break plans can now be. The long-time experts in the field, SkiWeekends, have been perfecting and fine-tuning their service even further. They are now offering the ultimate flexibility in delivering the break you want by combining all of their expertise and connections with their unmatched experience in knowing exactly what you’re likely to need at every moment of your trip, and ensuring it’s all covered and included. So, pick-up by private car from work to get you to the airport is no problem. Nor is an evening flight to the Alps with a transfer waiting for you on arrival, and late-night food when you reach resort too. Every other aspect of your trip is meticulously planned for and delivered to your chosen timetable, right through to your trip home. It’s all about maximising your ski time. That can mean a whole host of things from your lift pass handed to you on arrival, ski rentals provided in your chalet or hotel, private ski school or ski guide booking and much more, all tailored to your needs. There are plenty of different ski break types, from the complete beginner looking to dip a toe into the wonderful world of snow sports and find out whether

to squeeze three days on the slopes into that cheeky weekend away. • After a morning flight and short transfer you’re on the slopes by lunchtime, thanks to your lift pass, rentals and a pre-ski snack all being ready and waiting for you. • A great choice of accommodation from comfy catered chalets to luxury hotels. • Plenty of time to ski, party and relax, ensuring you return home energised (and ready to go again!).

The Ski Weekend Warrior • You just need that ski fix, but you can’t afford ANY time off work? No problem! • It’s Friday, SkiWeekends send a car to pick you up from work and take you straight to your local airport. • On arrival at your destination airport, a private transfer awaits to whisk you to your hotel – where a late supper and a glass of bubbly are waiting for you. • First thing Saturday morning you are off on the slopes, with a VIP apres-ski arranged once the sun starts setting. • Enjoy a fabulous dinner and wine. Then off to bed for an early start before a second full day on the slopes. • Take your last run down at 5pm and then a fast transfer back to the airport. • Finally, we take you back home from your local airport and you are saying “goodnight” to the driver at your front door around midnight. • Monday morning chat: “What did you do at the weekend?” “Well…”

they love it or not (well, of course, they will), before committing to more, to the most experienced but time-poor, luxury-loving skiers looking for a few 5★ hotel nights, some spa time, heli-skiing and a Tesla transfer in just 60 amazing hours over a weekend. Or, at the other extreme, the vigorous value ski breaker who can take a midweek break and take advantage of cheaper flights, quieter airports and hopefully leave the kids for Granny and Grandad to look after for a few days. Every version of ski break is possible with SkiWeekends and, thanks to their ultimate flexibility, you can combine the benefits of any type of break with any other.

The Ski Time Maximiser • You always make time for your skiing as it’s obviously one of life’s priorities, but you want to get more time on the slopes than the standard six days on an eight-day trip with a week off work. • How about four-and-a-half days for four nights away from home? • Take a morning flight with a quick transfer and be on the slopes by lunchtime on travel day. • Take advantage of SkiWeekends’ expertise to get the best experience. • Flights to suit you from a choice of 17 UK airports. • Ski until the last lift on the day you go home.

What Kind of Ski Short Breaker Are You?

• Choose between hotels or great-value catered chalets with cake, food and wine included. • You can do a variant on the same trip again to get nine days’ skiing from two five-day breaks.

The Long Weekend Skier • Time-poor but ski needy, you want to feel like you’ve had a proper ski holiday. How about three days in the mountains for one day off work? • Whether you want to take Friday or Monday off, SkiWeekends can create a break that allows you

Fear would consume most of us when faced with jumping off 15m cliffs, hurtling down the steepest and most dangerous mountains in the world. But freeriders live for it. They thrive on it. And most importantly, they know exactly how to do it.

NIC ALEGRE / RED BULL CONTENT POOL

Xtreme Verbier Champion Jackie Paaso lays it out simply: “I have to ask myself, why am I scared? If it’s because it’s something I shouldn’t be skiing then I have to take a step back and make a new plan. If it is something I can do then I have to push that fear to the side”. Freeriders have an amazing ability to know their limits and push through the barriers that may stop most. This mental confidence is clearly what sets these athletes apart. They refer to it as an ongoing mental battle with yourself, with what you can and cannot do. This battle is what sets your limits on how far you are willing to go. MARCUS OLSSON / RED BULL CONTENT POOL

“Freeriding looks scary but a lot of the riders are super calculating,” says Blake Hamm, Bronze Medallist Freeride World Tour. Freeride athletes know their capabilities and would never put themselves in a position that could lead to a fall or injury. Interestingly, freeriders often undertake just as much mental training as physical preparation. They study photos of the mountain they are going to ski and use visual meditations and specific NIC ALEGRE / RED BULL CONTENT POOL

breathing techniques. “A coach taught me to use visualisations for comps … you have to have confidence you’re going to land it,” Blake continues. This way, they are able to fully focus on the task at hand and perform at their best. They stand on top of the mountain with pure confidence and excitement knowing they are about to ski the line of their life. However, it’s not just between you and your own mind. Athletes discuss their lines over with each other, relying on advice and support from their peers. “We are all buddies in the industry and none of us want to see each other get hurt, so if we think someone is skiing a stupid line we will tell them for their own safety,” says Mark Abma. They are truthful with each other, saying if a line is a bit of a stretch for someone’s ability, or encouraging their buddy to have the confidence to go after something bigger if they know they are capable! So next time you feel like channelling your inner freerider, tune in to your body, breathe, visualise your run, push the fear to the side and then drop.

LET’S GO FLY A DRONE Drones and skiing have a mixed history. The marvellous hovering devices have been used to capture incredible footage of the slopes and talented skiers and boarders doing their thing like never before, and they have also been used for search and rescue, but they’ve crashed into ski lifts as well and nearly taken out ski racers when they’ve dropped from the sky, leading to most resorts banning their use. But some resorts are offering a more structured use of drones as an organised activity, with Les Menuires in France one of the latest to do this. Easy Drone provide a drone-flying taster session to anyone who fancies learning the basics of flying. You can hone your skills on a fun course and create a family photoshoot with videos and photos of your adventures on- or off-piste. CYRIL GERVAIS

The one-to-four-hour photoshoots for groups of two to four people cost from €45pp (around £39).

ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY SNOWSPORTS EQUIPMENT

 THIRTYTWO JP LIGHT SNOWBOARD BOOT 2020

In a world where we are all becoming much more aware of the long-term effects we are having on our environment, why should snowsports equipment be any different? We all enjoy the thrill of snowsports and the spectacular mountain environment, but without technical equipment, none of it is possible. However, to sustain a longer-term future, both brands and consumers need to start being more conscious of their environmental impact. A huge number of brands are meeting the challenge of utilising environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes, while still producing technical products that are functional, durable and stylish. Since its inception over 10 years ago, Picture Organic Clothing have created all their products from recycled, organic and bio-sourced materials – whether it’s fillings made of recycled plastic bottles, PFC-free water-repellent treatments or reduced packaging and renewable energy in their factories. Patagonia is another brand highly dedicated to creating environmentally friendly outdoor products. They are always at the forefront of climate change activism, fully standing behind this with the products they create. This year’s technical shell range utilises 100% recycled face fabrics and is Fair Trade Certified sewn. Rejecting fast fashion and focusing on highquality, long-lasting products, they even offer a repair and reuse programme. What’s more, alternative fabrics are increasingly being developed, which are not only sustainable, but also enhance equipment. Many touring ski boots now utilise Pebax® Rnew, a lightweight recycled plastic, which actually adds to the boot’s performance. Even quality vegan-friendly gloves and trainers are now available. Many brands are also giving a percentage of their profits to causes like 1% for the Planet and Protect Our Winters, both of which actively help with climate change activism and events. The threat of climate change could have a dramatic effect on the sport we love so much. The industry is making huge changes to sustain a brighter future. Are you?
