‚Water ways‘ is a film that transports us into the lives of a community living on the water ways of Banjarmasin in Indonesia. The film shows a slice of everyday life on the water, starting with a group of children playing in the wash of the boat; and a tangle of boats that ultimately leads us to the main protagonist of the film, an older woman who shares her point of view with us.
Sylvia Schwenk’s practice looks at the relationship between performance and the everyday, reflecting upon the significance and beauty of commonplace activities and spaces. Sometimes she captures a moment, space or action with photographs, films, text and/or installations. Other times she creates works which focus on inter-human relational practices that emphasize collaboration, dialogue and audience activation.

Two men who have lost their way, a child afraid of falling asleep and a woman intertwined with a gruesome reality are intrinsically interconnected in “Image of a Girl”. The characters dwell around a silent, desolate dreamscape and the laws of the subconscious effortlessly slip in. The film looks back on the impact of a nightmare... or is it an ominous premonition?
Midway through their film studies at the Utrecht School of Arts, Bregje Benecke and Jochem Bootsma discovered that a collaboration improved the quality of their projects. They decided to continue as writers/directors duo. Through many experiments they developed a characteristic working method based on intuition and association in order to let ideas evolve naturally into a story. This resulted in their graduation film “Image of a Girl”, for which they received special honours.

A project, born as a solution to the contemporary existential dystopia, whose finality is consisted mostly often in neuro-psychic disorders, brings to life the myth of the cave, not only to the intercession’s initiator, as Platon suggested, but to all those who wish a moment of harmony. Thereby, the cave from “Romanian” turns, from the primary place of culture’s origins, into a space of therapy through art.
Artur Boruzs is a student of Caragiale Academy of Theatrical Arts and Cinematography in the 3rd year of the directing class.
