Per avere consenso The upcoming general election to re-elect the Italian Parliament is approaching. Populist figures from various parties are using rhetorical tactics, such as referencing yacht ownership, to garner support by Francesco Michienzi

Many media outlets overlook that the shipbuilding industry and boatyards GENERATE ECONOMIC VALUE AND PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT. Implementing harsh measures without considering their productive interests could cause more harm than benefit.

legittima e pratiche elusive o illegali.

Public debates about implementing a wealth tax often adopt a quick, symbolic tone. The yacht symbolises perceived unfairness and inequality, becoming a marker of social disparity. While it’s true that in times of economic downturn and rising social tensions, conspicuous consumption can elicit outrage, simplifying the issue to just condemning boat ownership is misleading. It distracts from the core economic concerns that underpin sound fiscal policy. A balanced analysis should explore why yachts are targeted, understand the genuine economic reasons behind such purchases, and consider how to develop fair, effective policies without falling into populist rhetoric. A yacht is a powerful symbol: it immediately conjures an image of luxury, typical of those who seem to live outside the realities of everyday life. In political and media discourse, it serves as a communicative shortcut: talking about taking away yachts or taxing them is straightforward and has strong emotional appeal. In times of social unrest, a symbolic 12

The Italian Tennis Federation should advocate that the DEBATE remains focused on sport, emphasising respect, dedication, transparency, and the growth of tennis.

gesture can easily rally support. We had hoped we would no longer hear the old refrain that even the rich have to suffer. The Italian boating industry makes a real contribution to improving the financial circumstances of many families. Media coverage can either turn legitimate outrage into a drive towards easy, symbolic solutions or fuel an informed debate that distinguishes between legitimate private choices and evasive or illegal practices. We, journalists, have a responsibility to improve the quality of the information we provide to the public, to promote technical understanding, to avoid simplistic demonisation, and to encourage a debate based on data and practical solutions. Only in this way can the debate on wealth taxation move beyond rhetoric and address the real drivers of tax fairness. But it is not only politicians and journalists fuelling a distorted view of boat ownership. The president of the Italian Tennis Federation mentioned in an interview with Corriere della Sera that Jannik Sinner would never purchase a €6 million yacht, unlike Carlos Alcaraz. This remark appears more as a rhetorical and populist remark rather than a serious evaluation. Comparing two athletes based on the ownership of a yacht amounts to overgeneralizing and making moral judgments about personal private decisions. Buying a yacht is a personal choice and does not necessarily imply wrongdoing or immorality. Most individuals achieve this through honest earnings, whether from employment, hobbies, or investments. Promoting class stereotypes and an ‘us versus them’ mindset simplifies public discourse and discredits those who succeed on their own merits. The Federation’s president should serve as a representative for tennis players, sponsors, and fans without fostering unnecessary divisions. A rash statement undermines sporting values, development policies and transparency. If the intention was to highlight an athlete’s frugality, this could have been done without disparaging those who own luxury goods. It could have emphasised Sinner’s humility and dedication. Every champion has the right to live as they please. Furthermore, there is a clear contradiction in how athletes’ wealth is judged. Jannik Sinner is rightly a multimillionaire because companies of all kinds choose him as a brand ambassador to promote their products; the market recognises his sporting and media value, and this is often viewed positively. Paradoxically, when someone spends part of their income on a yacht, populist commentators often label that purchase as immoral. This creates a double standard: commercial success is admired, but individual spending choices are condemned. A federation president – like many demagogic journalists – should steer clear of this contradictory rhetoric. If they want to commend an athlete’s moderation, they can do so without criticising those who have taken a different route. Demonising a yacht owner is a communicative shortcut that may appease public irritation, but fails to address the real issues of fairness and tax policy.

Buying a yacht, or any other asset, is a PRIVATE CHOICE that does not warrant public moralising or populist oversimplifications. The RHETORIC that divides ‘virtuous’ and ‘guilty’ consumers undermines the calm nature of public debate and the values we wish to promote. 14

NEXT YACHT GROUP

FOCUS ON TEMPORARY ADMISSION Nuovi chiarimenti dell’Agenzia delle Dogane e Monopoli per destreggiarsi in tema di ammissione temporanea di imbarcazioni Recent clarifications from the Italian Customs Agency about yacht temporary admission by Berardo Lanci*

AUGUST 2026

91

With the recent Circular No. 11/2026, the Customs Agency has once again addressed the temporary admission regime, providing very useful clarifications for operators in the sector, particularly regarding the restriction and clearance phases of the regime, as well as the yacht’s user, in the two scenarios of private or commercial use. It is worth recalling that vessels under the temporary admission regime are used by persons established outside the EU; therefore, a pleasure craft registered in a third country and owned by a person resident outside the EU may be used, under the temporary admission regime, by that person or by persons authorised by them. In this regard, identifying the authorised person is both useful and necessary to determine who assumes the obligations and responsibilities under the regime.

Generally speaking, in cases of private (non-commercial) use of the yacht, the user of the pleasure craft is the owner, even if the skipper may have physical control of the pleasure craft when the yacht enters the customs territory of the European Union. This position does not change, however, if the owner is not on board the vessel, because – as in the example given in the circular – they will join the vessel at a later time and by a different means of transport: in this case too, therefore, authorisation must be granted to the owner of the vessel, as the skipper is acting on the owner’s behalf. In the different scenario of the commercial use of a leased pleasure craft, authorisation is granted to the captain, as he has physical control of the vessel at the time it enters the customs territory of the Union and does not act on behalf of the shipowner: in this case, therefore, the user of the vessel is the skipper. With regard to commercial use, it was subsequently clarified that, if no commercial contract for consideration is in place at the time of entry into EU waters, the yacht may enter under the temporary admission procedure for private use, as mentioned above. If, before the expiry of the period for clearance of the procedure, the yacht enters into a contract for commercial purposes, it must leave the customs territory. Subsequently, once the commercial contract is in place, the yacht may re-enter the EU customs territory under the temporary admission procedure for commercial use (and may remain in EU territorial waters for the period specified in the contract). In relation to the above, it is also worth mentioning a very important point in the circular: the person responsible for the procedure bears the burden of proving entry into EU territory or, if the vessel subsequently re-entered, that it has left EU waters. On this point, it is first clarified that in such In merito alle condizioni per l’appuramento, la circolare in commento riconosce la rilevanza dell’uscita dalle acque unionali, senza necessariamente dover approdare in un porto extra-unionale, allineando il regime italiano a quello di altri paesi europei. With regard to the conditions for clearance, the circular recognises the relevance of leaving EU waters – without necessarily docking at a nonEU port – thereby aligning the italian regime with that of other European countries.

a case, the 18-month time limit for the procedure’s clearance will restart. Furthermore, with regard to the means of proof, it is clarified that exit may also be demonstrated by means of satellite detection systems recording the vessel’s arrival in international waters or alternatively by means of documentation certifying arrival at a third-country port or showing bunkering operations carried out abroad, or, again, by means of entries in the logbook. The importance of this clarification is of primary significance, given that it overturns the previous approach according to which, for the purposes of verification, it was necessary to demonstrate entry into a non-EU port and that mere exit from EU waters was not sufficient. Finally, it is worth mentioning one last point regarding the customs procedure to which the yacht is subject. In particular, the circular notes that in the yachting sector, it is common for a privately owned vessel to be placed under the temporary admission procedure by its owner, whilst the inward processing procedure is requested by the shipyard in the event of repairs or other work that cannot be carried out under the temporary admission procedure. Once the work has been completed, the inward processing regime is terminated, and the subsequent temporary admission phase – the time limits for which continue to run – reverts to the vessel’s owner. In the case in question, since both the holders of the two procedures relating to the same asset and the purposes for which the asset is subject to them differ, for the purposes of calculating the maximum period of stay under temporary admission, only the periods during which the vessel is subject to that procedure by the same person, the owner of the vessel, shall be taken into account.

Sì, l’AI è ufficialmente salita a bordo.

Artificial intelligence is no longer a promise for the yachting world’s future: it is already a working reality that is redefining the relationship between the skipper and the yacht.

It’s no secret: artificial intelligence is now an integral part of all our lives. There isn’t a single sector that doesn’t use it, including the yachting industry. Yes, AI has officially come on board. In recent years, we have seen a host of innovations and new solutions promising yachts that are increasingly ‘smart’, automated and environmentally friendly. Today, this technology is redefining the relationship between captains and their vessels, transforming many aspects of navigation, from weather forecasting systems to route control algorithms. In this context, machine learning systems process atmospheric data in real time, translating it into optimal, up-to-date routes. In fact, the new autopilots do not simply maintain the set course but adapt it. The algorithms ‘read’ and analyse sea conditions at all times and, by adjusting the ship’s course, reduce the captain’s traditional workload. AI-powered sensors and cameras identify obstacles and hazardous situations in good time, suggesting corrective manoeuvres or intervening autonomously in the most urgent cases before they become critical. In the world of yachting, however, it is not only AI that is transforming the

Relying on advanced systems without complete understanding exposes us to often UNDERESTIMATED RISKS, such as cyber vulnerabilities and the gradual erosion of human control. While advancements in the nautical sector offer significant OPPORTUNITIES, they require careful navigation, much like steering a ship at sea.

sector, but also Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which we can confidently say are the most significant trend. The latest boats are fully connected, leveraging IoT technologies to create hyper-connected environments that can communicate with owners in real time. Remote monitoring is available anytime and anywhere. Whether docked or abroad, you can instantly access all onboard information via a smartphone or tablet. The system offers proactive protection, with IoT sensors not just recording data but also taking actions. For example, in the case of a break-in, fire, or water leak, it sends immediate alerts, significantly reducing response times and potential damage. But that’s not all. Innovation also enhances comfort at sea, allowing all aspects of onboard wellbeing to be controlled remotely. System automation is now accessible beyond large yachts, transforming the sailing experience. To conclude this brief analysis, two key points must be emphasized. First, not everything labeled as ‘intelligent’ truly is. The term ‘AI’ has become a popular label, often applied to technologies that are essentially advanced automation or sophisticated interfaces. The difference goes beyond just technical aspects. Second, there’s the security concern: whether it’s the Internet of Things or AI, technological progress has downsides that shouldn’t be overlooked. More connected systems create more vulnerabilities, and more autonomous systems mean decisions are made without human control. The main challenge for the sector is to steer innovation using strong standards, transparency, and critical awareness – both at sea and on land – making the difference between a useful tool and a hidden risk.

THE SOUND OF LEGEND A Monte Carlo, una tre giorni al cardiopalmo.

Monte Carlo offered three exhilarating days filled with races and parades of historic racing cars that have defined motor racing history by Giovanni Gasparini*

AUGUST JULY 2026

The Principality of Monaco experienced a revival of its golden era of motor racing. The Grand Prix Historique, organised by the Automobile Club de Monaco, took place, evoking the glory days of yesteryear by bringing back onto the streets of the city circuit – the most challenging and fascinating of them all – the cars that raced there between the 1920s and 1980s. A notable update to this 15th edition was the inclusion of turbocharged Formula 1 single-seaters, vehicles that revolutionised motor racing from 1977. The huge paddock, set up specifically on the harbour quay, was transformed into an open-air museum, bustling with hard-working mechanics dismantling, assembling, oiling and hammering... Kicking things off were the 1920s and 1930s, dedicated to the legendary Monegasque driver Louis Chiron, with the never-ending battle between Bugatti (no fewer than 11 on the grid), Alfa Romeo and Maserati. Next came the glorious 1950s – dominated by the figure of the unforgettable champion Juan Manuel Fangio – in which the magnificent Maserati 250Fs, perhaps the most beautiful ever built, competed against the early Ferraris and the British Cooper-Bristols and Lotuses: racing cars capable of easily exceeding 300 kilometres per hour, despite their basic brakes.

Jacky Ickx, pictured with Jean Alesi, one of the event’s guests of honour, at the age of 81, handled the more than 400 hp of the legendary 1968 Ferrari 312 with great skill. Designed by engineer Mauro Forghieri, it was the first single-seater ever to introduce a rear wing to improve downforce, anticipating modern concepts of aerodynamics.

The 1960s – marked by the victories of the charismatic Graham Hill – were celebrated by the legendary ‘torpedoes’, such as Lotus, Cooper and Brabham, which, moreover, gave the 1964 Ferrari 512 a run for its money. Speaking of Ferrari, the unmissable parade of red cars was spectacular: 12 marvels took to the track, including Michael Schumacher’s iconic F2004 and the F2007 driven by Felipe Massa and Kimi Räikkönen – the latter of which, incidentally, saw Räikkönen crowned world champion. Naturally, the event was attended by some real heavyweights from the world of motor racing: Jean Alesi took the wheel of the 1969 Ferrari 312, whilst Jacky Ickx – aged 81 – tamed the power of the 1968 model. Unfortunately, the French driver was involved in a spectacular crash, from which, thankfully, he emerged unscathed. Adrenaline on the track – and more besides. During the three-day event, two auctions were also organised, much to the delight of wealthy and die-hard enthusiasts. The British auction house Bonhams raised over 10 million euros, with numerous rally cars also going under the hammer. RM Sotheby’s, amongst others, sold two iconic red cars: the 1991 Ferrari 642 for 3.8 million euros and an extremely rare 312 T3 for 4.3 million, a marvellous single-seater from 1978 driven by the most beloved driver of all time, Gilles Villeneuve. Although, at least for this edition, the lucky winner who, for 16.6 million euros, took home one of the extremely rare 1960s Ferrari 250 GT SWB Californias will go down in history. Bien Fait!

BOAT GOURMET

“My cuisine is built on ingredients and techniques. Nature and man. These are the ingredients I care for”.

«Natural elements are fundamental to creating a recipe. I wanted this approach to be reflected in the restaurant, with interiors that speak of nature without needing to explain anything. Everything is simply there for all to see». Michelangelo Mammoliti

BOAT GOURMET

Thus begins the menu of Italy’s fifteenth three-starred restaurant, the latest to be awarded this distinction in the 2026 edition of the Michelin Guide. It is the statement of intent from Michelangelo Mammoliti, a Piedmontese chef born in 1985 – the year Gualtiero Marchesi earned Italy’s historic first Michelin star – in whose kitchens he began his apprenticeship at a very young age. Beyond the large windows, nature plays a central role, with the garden, greenhouse (the vegetable garden nearby in Barolo), and vineyards (part of the same estate as the Batasiolo Winery) encircling the hill where the Boscareto Resort is located. The chef enjoys exploring this hill on his bicycle. His dishes also reflect a ‘green’ ethos. While animal proteins are present – featured prominently on the ‘De rerum’ menu (including sturgeon, Sanremo purple prawns, turbot, and Dombes duck, as well as sweetbreads and chicken skin) – they never dominate the presentation or the flavour balance. Mammoliti guides guests through shared memories by creating La Rei Natura as a seamless, flowing space. It features open-plan micro-kitchens where his team prepares aperitifs before guests’ eyes, the main dining room, and another lounge area, where the meal concludes with Giulia Zappa’s desserts and coffee. Just as one used to do with guests at home, but is complemented by a modern design and top-tier service under Alessandro Marcialis. To genuinely enjoy Mammoliti’s cuisine, simply trust the chef and dive into the ten innovative creations of Mad100% Natura with an open mind. Alternatively, you can join him on a culinary journey through Voyage, discovering flavours and techniques spanning from the Far East to the Mediterranean. Since nature influences the menu, it’s unlikely you’ll encounter the same dishes on a return visit, as everything varies with weather, seasons, and temperature. All menus are also available with wine pairings by the glass or with non-alcoholic options. The wine list is a veritable encyclopaedia of Langhe classics, alongside which sommelier Alessandro Tupputi features wines from small and very small local and international producers.

BAROCCO &

Neobarocco Ragusa Ibla è stata, ancora una volta, la sede del Festival Barocco & Neobarocco, curato dall’architetto e docente universitario Roberto Semprini e prodotto dall’imprenditore Gianni Leggio Ragusa Ibla once again hosted the Baroque & Neo-Baroque Festival, curated by architect and university lecturer Roberto Semprini and produced by entrepreneur Gianni Leggio by Carlo Cattaneo

GALLERY

The event has converted some of the city’s most historic buildings into spaces for sitespecific installations and venues for conferences, performances, and workshops.

It is a prominent cultural festival focused on reinterpreting the Baroque heritage of Val di Noto. Each year, the festival tackles this theme through a subtitle that fosters dialogue between the modern world and the reconstruction efforts following the 1693 earthquake, which transformed the area’s urban and architectural fabric. The 2026 theme was Rebirth: the role of materials in the architecture of historic centres, emphasising local materials such as pitch stone, lava stone, marble, and granite as essential elements that connect traditional building practices with contemporary architecture and design.

The installations offered a comparison between local resources and the experiments conducted by companies operating in the new materials sector.

The festival offered a chance to consider the design of public spaces through temporary installations focused on urban regeneration in the historic centre. These exhibitions and displays were located in historic buildings and open city spaces, featuring impressive presentations by designers, artists, and photographers. To emphasize the event’s function as a cultural hub, a dedicated training area was also set up, involving students from the Design Course at Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the Project Communication Course at IULM.

Most of Sardinia’s ports are located along the northern coast of the island, a popular area perfect for exploring the stunning beaches of Gallura and the Costa Smeralda.

Finding a spot to moor your yacht in Sardinia during the summer is notoriously difficult. This isn’t due to a lack of berths or marinas on the contrary. The region boasts around 23,000 berths and 51 marinas, mostly in the north between Alghero and Olbia, and in the south near Cagliari. Sardinia is arguably the top region in Italy for the number of landing options. During the hot summer months, the island, with a population of just 1.6 million, sees a steady influx of 4 million holidaymakers – a truly remarkable figure. This is a well-known reason and a point of pride for the nation: the sea surrounding the island is among the most beautiful in the world, naturally drawing crowds of tourists every year, including a significant number of pleasure boaters. These visitors represent a diverse group: the clear Sardinian waters are always filled with boats of various types and sizes. All this being said, Barche’s journey to discover these wonderful landings began on the north-western

coast and continued with a surgical clockwise progression. Our journey begins at Alghero’s lively port, offering a safe refuge from the chill mistral winds despite its somewhat exposed position. Situated beneath the historic town walls, it accommodates yachts up to 50 meters and has about 400 berths. From here, you sail along a coast that seems intricately carved by angels to Porto Conte, located within the verdant Regional Nature Park bearing the same name, then on to the charming Tramariglio Cove, famous for its unique piers. Beyond Porto Torres’ industrial harbour, which only features a small dock for transit pleasure boats, lies the small harbour of Castelsardo, in Sassari’s metro area. This harbour is partially hidden above by houses from the medieval centre. Finally, you reach the more intimate harbour of Isola Rossa, which is truly enchanting. After approximately twenty miles, you’ll begin to see the stunning natural harbour of Santa Teresa di Gallura. This remarkable fjord serves as the departure point for ferries heading to Bonifacio in nearby Corsica. From Santa Teresa di Gallura to Olbia, for about 40 miles, it is all a succession of marvellous landing places framed like paintings among natural bays and delightful islets. To name but a few: Marmorata and Conca Verde breakwaters, Porto Pozzo, Isola dei Gabbiani, and Porto Pollo. Obviously, there is Porto Rafael, Palau’s strategic tourist marina, which guarantees maritime connections with the Archipelago of La Maddalena. In addition, there are many breakwaters under Capo d’Orso, the marina of Cannigione in the Arzachena Gulf, and the piers and jetties of Cala Bitta, Poltu Quatu, and Liscia di Vacca. And of course, we should not forget the absolute cult institution for high-profile yachting, the luxurious Marina of Porto Cervo. And then the bays of Pevero and Romazzino, Cala di Volpe, the breakwater of Petra Ruja, the Marina of Portisco, and the Cugnana Gulf, up until an authentic international celebrity: the Marina of Porto Rotondo.

Tavolara.

Sardinia has a population of only 1.6 million, but in SUMMER, it draws approximately 4 million holidaymakers. A truly remarkable figure.

But this is not all. It would be impossible not to include the microscopic harbour of Palumbalza in this list, as well as the small harbour of Marinella. The latter is renowned for its wide-ranging dock system spread over various bays. After rounding Capo Figari, you access the Gulf of Olbia, where the delightful harbours of Golfo Aranci unwind one after the other, the berths of Cala Banana and the city’s large commercial harbour. From here, the practically mandatory stage is La Maddalena, which offers pleasure boaters plenty of docking options. Among the coves, the most notable are Gavetta, Balbiano, Mangiavolpe, Chiesa, and Camiciotto. But you also have the Arsenale ports, with a breathtaking view of Caprera and Santo Stefano, and the quieter, more discreet Porto Massimo and Marina del Ponte. Once you round Punta Marginetto, the Stagno Torto will appear before you in all its splendour. But let us now turn to the eastern coast. Less travelled by seafarers and to some extent less equipped, it nonetheless yields certain pleasant discoveries. For instance, the small facilities of Costa Corallina, Porto San Paolo, and Cala Finanza, but also the marinas of Puntaldìa and San Teodoro, Porto Ottiolu, La Caletta, the small piers (Moletti) of Orosei, Cala Gonone, Santa Maria Navarrese, and, lastly, an authentic harbour – Arbatax – complete with its very own tourist dock. Further south, we should mention Capo San Lorenzo, the beautiful Porto Corallo, and Capo Carbonara. A couple of miles further, and you reach Marina di Villasimius. From there, you travel twelve more miles to Capitana, and lastly, another six to dock at the first marina in the Cagliari area, Marina Piccola, which can accommodate about 350 boats. After Cagliari’s industrial district, as you sail back up along the coast heading south-west, you encounter Sant’Antioco, Calasetta, Carloforte, Portovesme, and Portoscuso, a quintet which - if it were not located within the military zones of Capo Teulada and the industrial district of Carbonia - would be a worthy competitor of the much more famous Costa Smeralda.

highlighted by the launch of the 50Steel Almax in 2024, the world’s first superyacht equipped with a methanol Reformer Fuel Cell system.

The letter to Jessica Roswall has been shared among key players in the maritime industry. Below Massimo Perotti’s signature, signatures from Robert van Tol, Executive Director of SYBAss (which advocates for the global superyacht industry); Professor Flavio Manenti from the Politecnico di Milano, an expert in sustainable industrial processes; Gregorio Passani, Chief Business Officer at Nanni; Alessandro Airoldi, CEO of Ranieri Tonissi; and Leah Werner, Director of the Water Revolution Foundation, are included.

The message, loud and clear, came from its Executive Chairman, Massimo Perotti, who firmly reiterated the urgent need to raise the bar on sustainability:

a crucial task that, in this case, falls not only to boat builders but also to the institutions responsible for ensuring both the availability of green methanol and the electrification infrastructure across Europe’s main maritime hubs. The aim? To put an end to empty talk, good intentions for their own sake, and the insidious – and all too common – practice of greenwashing. That’s right. Perotti has argued for this need through the Venice Call for Maritime Action, an initiative that will undoubtedly go down in the annals of socially responsible yachting. It was formalised in an open letter (scripta manent) addressed to Jessica Roswall, Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy, and copied to Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission. The letter emphasises the critical need for prompt, coordinated efforts from key political figures and port authorities. Without such actions, the widespread adoption of new-generation sustainable yachts would lack purpose. Additionally, the letter has received support from prominent members of the maritime community: at the bottom, following Massimo Perotti’s signature, are signatures from Robert van Tol, Executive Director of SYBAss (which represents the global superyacht industry); Professor Flavio Manenti of the Politecnico di Milano, a leading expert in sustainable industrial processes; Gregorio Passani, Chief Business Officer at Nanni; Alessandro Airoldi, CEO of Ranieri Tonissi; and Leah Werner, Director of the Water Revolution Foundation. Perotti clearly states in the letter: “The technology is ready. The current challenge is to develop infrastructure and fuel availability simultaneously so that these innovations can be fully realised. Without adequate infrastructure – at ports, marinas, and along the supply chain – adoption cannot expand”. As previously noted, this underscores the need for alignment between industry, infrastructure, and public policy, since the adoption of new propulsion technologies relies on coordinated efforts among energy providers, ports, and relevant authorities. Massimo Perotti explains, “We are entering a new phase in the transition to sustainable maritime mobility. Innovation is progressing quickly, and the boating industry can lead this change by making sustainability both feasible and attractive. However, this depends on system-wide alignment”, and he additionally met Commissioner Roswall on June 8 to personally deliver the letter.

Currently, under 1% of worldwide methanol is produced from renewable sources, primarily supplied to major industrial hubs such as the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, and it is not yet available to the Mediterranean yachting sector. Furthermore, Sanlorenzo, a Founding Partner of Venice Climate Week, has opened its cultural hub, Casa Sanlorenzo, to discuss with its guests the 2026 theme, which focuses on the role of water, under the evocative title Planet Aqua, Planet Peace. Water is now not just vital for life but also serves as a crucial tool for understanding climate change. It acts as a strategic indicator and a reliable barometer that must be closely monitored by everyone—especially mayors of coastal and lagoon cities, governments, scientists, and industry leaders.

Sanlorenzo’s programme aims to achieve CARBON NEUTRALITY by 2040, exactly 10 years ahead of the European Union’s 2050 deadline. It is therefore essential to increase investment in alternative fuels, as the uptake of new-generation sustainable yachts will be determined by the availability of energy infrastructure rather than the pace of technological innovation.

«I don’t believe in ELECTRIC mode. I’m even sceptical about it in the automotive sector. It makes limited sense IN INLAND OR PROTECTED WATERS. The road ahead is still very long, rough and uphill». 142

Quindi?

E? E dove vogliamo andare.

It was 2024 when I first met Andrea Agrusta. Forty-two, from Taranto in Puglia, a naval engineer. Distinguishing features: immune to imagination. «Currently, many are requesting us to design boats prepared for HYBRID systems, not already hybrid vessels. We are working on modular solutions that enable this type of propulsion to be installed at any point, WITHOUT THE NEED FOR A COMPLETE OVERHAUL OF THE ENTIRE BOAT».

THE THE IDEA IDEA FACTORY FACTORY

Back then, even a single milligram of creativity would have been enough to send him into anaphylactic shock. At the helm of NavalHEAD, a leading Trieste-based design firm, since 2010, he would use his sharp retorts to brush aside any suggestion of contemplating shades on the colour spectrum of life other than black or white. Two years on, something has, tentatively, changed... We are a team of professionals – technicians, engineers, and draughtsmen. To us, the word compromise has no place. In the realm of geometry, rationality always triumphs. We do not focus on stylistic trends; our only concern is designing boats that sail effectively. Everything else is irrelevant. Agrusta, these are your words from September 16, 2024. Do you recall them? Yes (he gives a slight smile). In fact, just before I met you, I went back to read that interview, and I must admit I was surprised by such rigidity. Does that imply you’ve relaxed your stance on stoicism for now? I’ve softened some of my rougher edges. As you grow older, you naturally adopt a more balanced approach. Can you believe I’ve even brought an architect on board! Creativity, I’m not afraid of you. Let’s not get carried away. NavalHEAD’s design philosophy remains unchanged. Rather than change, I’d prefer to talk about evolution. Not a day goes by without my reminding my team that our job is to turn dreams into reality. If a dream isn’t feasible, it’s always better to “wake up” the shipyard, the designer and the owner – even in the middle of the night, if necessary. There’s no point in making promises we can’t keep. That’s to your credit. But let’s turn to the studio. It’s approaching its sixteenth anniversary, a milestone that undoubtedly warrants a balance. The main turning point has occurred in the last five years, as this period marks our expanded horizons. We have started

Andrea Agrusta is a prim and proper engineer and an EXCELLENT GARDENER. He says that, amongst other plants, he also has a marvellous rose garden. This is thanks to an irrigation system, which, needless to say, he designed himself: «It’s an extremely complicated and costly contraption, but it gives me great satisfaction».

working with larger vessels than our traditional core, tackling projects from 30 to 50 metres. Why the move to bigger boats? Because the market has changed. Or rather, boat owners have changed their ways and their desires. Since the Covid era, the yacht has moved away from being a status symbol for its own sake. It is increasingly a ‘physical space’ where one feels the need to take refuge and, as such, must offer adequate space and volume. Naturally, NavalHEAD’s next step will be to break through the 500 GT barrier. So? We’ve organised ourselves to tackle more complex issues. Please note: I didn’t say ‘more difficult’. People often assume that design challenges are directly proportional to a yacht’s size. That’s not the case. In any event, we’ve expanded our team and opened a strategic hub in Viareggio, which complements our headquarters in Trieste and serves as a talent incubator. What “larger” boats are we referring to? Back in 2024, you mentioned a collaboration with Ocean Alexander and the Azimut Benetti group. Could you share a few details? For the Taiwanese shipyard, we’ve developed the entire Puro range in collaboration with Giorgio M. Cassetta. It comprises production yachts measuring 30, 35 and 40 metres, primarily for an American clientele. We’ve already launched five 35-metre models in just two years. As for Azimut Benetti, I can confirm that we’re collaborating on several projects that aren’t yet complete, but I can’t share more at the moment. I can add Tankoa to the list, though I’m not at liberty to reveal anything about it yet. With Cantiere delle Marche, we’re working on a 105-foot Explorer from the Raw range, and with Palumbo we’re involved in both the new X100 Triplex and the new X70 Shadow. You referenced large shipyards that have a well-known reputation. As I mentioned, our organisation is well-prepared for major collaborations with both Italian and international companies. Over the past five years, our vision has expanded significantly. We provide a comprehensive package of naval architecture and engineering services. We grow together with our clients, facing challenges that lead to great satisfaction and validation. First-time clients often become repeat customers. In what way do you consider NavalHEAD a pioneer? Undoubtedly, we have been at the forefront of developing advanced hydrodynamic solutions. More than ten years ago, we introduced bladetype bulb bows to the pleasure craft sector – a feature that,

at the time, was the preserve of military vessels. More generally, we have experimented extensively with the shapes of the transom and stern quarters to create pressure fields that improve propeller efficiency and lift the stern out of the water even before the boat starts planing. From the start, we have been working to achieve real reductions in fuel consumption – an issue that is now close to everyone’s heart. Speaking of everyone, you served it up to me on a silver platter. With a hint of hesitation and lack of knowledge – please forgive me – I’d like to ask: lately, everyone keeps talking about highperformance hulls and boats that must sail. Sorry to ask, but how were these boats and hulls made in the past? Isn’t there too much of a story around this topic? Until the 1990s, hulls had to perform well in terms of seaworthiness, manoeuvrability and performance, but achieving these results meant sacrificing on-board space and paying the price of exorbitant power requirements. Fuel consumption wasn’t an issue; as for sustainability… that was a complete unknown. From 2000 onwards, something changed. Above all, the way people experienced life on board changed. Owners were asking shipyards for ever more generous spaces. Consider that yachts from the 2000s, compared to those of the 1990s, had 30, 40 or even 50 per cent more floor space. This trend, however, came at the expense of the hulls. The result? There were undoubtedly more enjoyable boats on the water, but in reality, they were little more than bathtubs. They sailed poorly and were unable to handle a wave. This marked the start of the real challenge that continues to this day: plenty of space on board, but with a hull that actually works underwater, whilst respecting the environment and keeping fuel consumption in check. That’s one of the reasons NavalHEAD exists. Of course. But I’d like to highlight an aspect that I didn’t consider crucial until recently. In recent years, we’ve focused too much on doing and too little on showing what we were doing. I don’t know if I’m making myself clear. You’re making yourself perfectly clear. So? We’re working hard on our image to reach a wider audience. To communicate more effectively with the world. We’ll be updating the logo and boosting our social media channels. We’ll be revamping the website. Please excuse me, but it truly is inclusive, specifically designed for engineers. I’m referring to the website, of course... I know. But before we focused on the form, we invested in the substance. I’d say we’re now more than ready to tell the world – in the right way, that is, through effective storytelling – who we are. And where we want to go.

Grande.

mi appartiene come professionista. Come è andata? Direi molto bene.

«I was born with an EXTRAORDINARY PASSION for engines. Coerente. Private apartment in Milan - photo by Marco Reggi.

Grande. With that surname, there’s no avoiding the expectation: making an impact in any sector is an unstated duty that must be fulfilled. An unspoken vow that should eventually turn into something meaningful. Born in Parma on September 7, 1972, under the precise and analytical sign of Virgo, Christian Grande has lived up to these expectations. He rightly earns his place in the Hall of Fame of designers whose creativity has made their ‘objects’ instantly recognisable. In this context, we’re referring to boats: industry insiders will know that Grande has longstanding collaborations with Sacs, Cranchi, and Invictus. It all began with Sessa Marine, didn’t it? Yes, I was still a young student then, attending a car design school. Despite that, I had the chance to intern at this shipyard. From the very beginning, I was involved in the Key Light 18 and 21 projects – open and sports motorboats that clearly drew inspiration from the automotive industry – and they became the main focus of my dissertation. It has also marked the start of a remarkable career. I collaborated with Sessa for several years, designing more than fifty boats, each characterised by a distinct personality and unconventional geometry. I believe they were truly unprecedented in the boating industry, largely thanks to my background as a car designer. Cars, right. When did your passion for four-wheeled vehicles begin? It was always there. People from Emilia are born with this ‘factory defect’. The love of engines, of unleashing a few horsepower on the road, is in their DNA. As a child, I had an insatiable passion for drawing – mainly car interiors – and for model-making. I loved taking things apart and putting them back together again – not just cars and motorbikes, but even a remote control or a toy. I had to ‘get inside’ things at all costs, using both my hands and my mind, to understand them. I was fascinated by detail, even the most imperceptible. I’ve always been a stickler for detail and order. I line up my pencils by colour and gradient! Judging by the results, it proved an excellent DIY training ground: following the successful experience with Sessa, you forged a rock-solid partnership with Sacs, a blazon of the yachting industry. It was the early 2000s. The shipyard was building inflatable boats, mostly small ones. It was already a strong player, mind you. Still, it needed to create an innovative product – certainly larger – that had the appeal of a yacht yet was more practical and more accessible, in the broadest sense, including financially. Thus began the era of the maxi RIBs. The collaboration continues. In fact, it’s growing ever stronger – or am I mistaken? You’re not mistaken. However, on this subject,

I’d like to make a point that’s important to me. First of all, when I start working with a shipyard, I never do so just for a single project and then call it a day. The ‘one-off’ approach isn’t my style as a professional. I prefer to take an analytical approach with the owners, developing medium- to long-term strategies. I sit down with the key stakeholders to develop a forward-looking strategy. Who is our target client? What is our market? Where do we want to go? To put it simply: if I buy a pair of shoes hoping they’ll be comfortable for walking, going out for dinner and to the theatre, I’m almost certainly buying the wrong pair. I try to create the perfect shoe, based on precise, agreed-upon analyses, with a margin of error close to zero. After all, design is the final expression of an intention. This, of course, applies to Sacs and to all the companies I deal with. So Invictus as well? Absolutely. This brand was launched in 2014, in the wake of the crisis that hit the sector and that we all remember. I looked the builder straight in the eye and said: “Listen, there’s an extraordinary and completely untapped segment of the market. On the one hand, we have shipyards competing for boats of about 9 meters, costing 60–80 thousand euros; on the other, offerings start at 160–200 thousand euros. In between, there’s a complete gap. We need to position ourselves exactly there, at the €100,000 threshold, because anyone who can afford to spend €80,000 also has the means to invest €100,000 to leap in quality”. And there you have Invictus. How did it go? Very well, I’d say. A huge number of units have been sold, but the even more interesting figure concerns the second-hand market. It’s holding its value brilliantly. A boat that came out years ago for 90,000 euros is now worth 140,000 or 150,000. You’ve been far-sighted. And what about Cranchi? I first met with this shipyard back in 2016. There was a great sync from the start. Together, we reviewed its positioning and identity. Cranchi has had a makeover, but without any drastic changes. It’s been a measured, wellthought-out, collaborative process. Consistent, based on mutual respect and trust. After all, I could never work with someone who says to me “I want a boat like this, this long, this wide, this high, that sails like that”. Not least because, let’s be honest: you can design the most beautiful yacht in the world, but if you don’t have a strategy and a long-term

«It is very important to be able to CHANGE YOUR PERSPECTIVE. There are times when you need to get up close to objects, to look at them from a close-up perspective. You might be drawing a bollard for Foresti and Suardi or an armchair for Besenzoni. And then, straight afterwards, you need to step back and visualise how a boat will look at sea, or a villa on the lakeshore». 166

vision, you’ll get nowhere. You’ll merely produce a stylistic exercise. You can’t win. And you hate losing. I’m a Virgo. Stars alone aren’t enough. You’re probably really good, aren’t you? I’m not one for self-praise, but I can acknowledge that the combination of a clear market strategy and a pure, fluid, dynamic style – one that is never aggressive and immune to fads – certainly helps in the battle. Aggressive in what sense? I’m talking about those so-called ‘bad-boy’ boats with their military-inspired design. I dislike them. Especially at a time like this… Why on earth would I build a matte black boat? What am I trying to tell the world? That I’m a tough guy? That I’ve made it? Come on! Of course, all that aside, there is a market for them too. So? What do we do? Is it ruled out from the outset? No, we educate through suggestions that take this specific need into account, without, however, coming across as caricatures. If I decide to go into the Savannah amongst the lions, I can do so dressed as a SWAT officer with a long beard, or at the wheel of a Defender as the sun sets, wearing an elegant safari jacket. Do you see what I mean? Yes. But at this stage, the real question is: which of the shipyards we’re working with is setting sail for Savannah? Let’s put it this way: we’re considering a few options with Sacs. I can’t say any more than that. I’ll leave it at that. All right. Putting work aside, here’s a final note: what does Christian Grande do in his free time? Gardening. I plant and uproot plants, move trees – often, much to the genuine gardener’s chagrin (though he smiles) – I do all these. Being in the midst of greenery truly relaxes me. With secateurs in hand, I walk barefoot on the grass, feeling the earth beneath my feet.

The lower deck includes a full-beam master cabin at the stern, followed by a VIP cabin and a guest cabin, each with an en-suite bathroom, bright interiors, elegant materials, and a calming ambience. Forward, the crew quarters consist of two cabins accommodating three crew members and a large galley.

With her pure, minimalist lines, SHE evokes the grace and spirit of the legendary 1960s. Her architecture delivers a dynamic, fluid on-board experience without ever compromising elegance. Her core value embodies a model with a timeless heart and a modern spirit. Massimo Perotti, Chair and CEO of Sanlorenzo Group, remarked: “SHE is a tribute to Italian yachting craftsmanship; she symbolises a journey of over seventy years. She embodies our principles: understated elegance, respectful innovation, and enduring design. Revealing SHE on my twentieth anniversary leading Sanlorenzo is profoundly meaningful. SHE bridges our heritage and our future direction”. The integration of one-way technology into the hull further enhances SHE’s elegant lines while preserving the clean, understated surfaces typical of a discreet style. From stern to bow, every detail supports an experience that is both highly functional and unique. The layout remains classic, with customization options enabling the owner to personalize their onboard experience. COVER STORY

A notable feature of the Hyper 5 S is its capability to enclose the space under the hardtop by installing side glass panels, offering protection during extended trips or in uncomfortable outdoor temperatures.

The Hyper 5 S showcases the brand’s core values – beautiful lines, meticulous design, functionality, safety, and comfort – magnified to their fullest expression.

in rada e grandi emozioni in navigazione.

As its name implies, Hyper embodies the spirit and character needed to surpass owner expectations, offering more than the usual. Designed by Christian Grande, the Hyper 5 S enhances SACS’s signature style by highlighting and evolving its distinctive features, creating a forward-looking design that balances elegance with sportiness. The result is a striking design featuring a deck, characterised by a flush deck further enhanced by opening terraces, and offering the aft deck two configurations that can be adapted to suit each owner’s preferences. In keeping with the boat’s sporting spirit, the hull has been designed to ensure fast, exhilarating sailing whilst offering the comfort of a smooth ride through the waves. The real design challenge was to integrate four different propulsion systems, capable of meeting a range of usage requirements, from the fastest and sportiest to the smoothest and most cruise-oriented, including the outboard version, intended primarily for overseas markets. The boat offers complete freedom of movement on the main deck, even at the bow, thanks to a spacious walkaround, all in complete safety. The open deck areas are transformed into a veritable terrace overlooking the sea.

Below deck, the Hyper 5 S impresses with its spaciousness and brightness. At the bow is the large master’s cabin; at the stern, a second cabin allows the sofa to be converted into a ample bed if required; amidships, a large bathroom offers generous dimensions and a separate shower.

At the bow, the sunbathing area and chaise longues provide a privileged oasis whilst at anchor and a truly thrilling experience whilst underway. Below a large hardtop lies the modern, imposing and ergonomic helm station, with everything within easy reach; moving towards the stern, amidships, there is a spacious wet bar opening onto the saloon with a U-shaped sofa, beyond which – continuing towards the stern – there are two possible configurations to choose from: a large sunbed with a tender garage, or a more modern and dynamic solution, featuring two independent sunbathing areas that can be moved closer together, allowing them to be used as separate islands or as a single large space. The Hyper 5 S will be previewed for yacht owners and enthusiasts at the SACS Destination events this summer, whilst its official launch will take place at the start of the major autumn boat shows, beginning with the Cannes Yachting Festival in September.

The design emphasises balance with some elements surpassing mere structural function to serve as expressive features. The two slender, sloping structures connecting the bridge deck to the lower deck suggest support and movement within an otherwise orderly layout. On the starboard side, the inclined structure accentuates the projection of the interior staircase ramp onto the exterior, serving as a dynamic element mirrored on the port side to maintain bilateral symmetry. Similarly, the slim vertical supports at the stern, supporting a small overhang, reduce the perceived weight of the structure and soften the geometry of the frames.

190

SUPERYACHTS

The interior is dominated by high-gloss rosewood, complemented by black hammered leather. The master suite has been enhanced with new features, including a new wardrobe at the entrance and larger windows.

When evaluating a boat, there are many factors to consider for an objective analysis, setting aside personal taste: the brand’s prestige, performance, usability, the quality of the finishes, and how the interior and exterior spaces flow together. The Riva 112 Dolcevita Super passes with flying colours, excelling in each of these aspects. On first glance, the harmony between its volumes and surfaces is striking. The balance is impeccable, without any flaws or excesses, in keeping with the design philosophy that has always distinguished the Sarnico shipyard (a brand of the Ferretti Group). The interiors showcase a fluid design driven by both a coherent layout and dynamic interactions: mahogany, stainless steel, fibreglass, and rosewood blend through a harmonious mix of colours and textures.

The Riva 112 Dolcevita Super is a boat that meets modern demands, featuring larger outdoor spaces, a beach area, fold-down bulwarks, oversized sofas, and new forward saloons. Its design emphasises a bold character, prioritising overall value over individual features.

This creates an elegant appeal, reaffirming – if confirmation were needed – Riva’s talent for turning each yacht into a stunning piece of design and craftsmanship. Many elements aboard coexist harmoniously, extending beyond the simple geometric proximity of forms and functions. This pursuit of order and harmony avoids rigidity and maintains a sense of movement. A range of asymmetries, reflections, variations, and shifts in perspective creates a dynamic quality, encouraging the eye to explore and breathe life into each space. In short, the interior layout reveals a particular level of design maturity, as seen in the square landing that ‘channels’ access to the four guest cabins on the lower deck: it is not merely a corridor, but a genuine hub capable of organising movement and enhancing the usability of the entire lower deck, the cabins’ independence, and the continuity between the various spaces.

L’HARDTOP è in carbonio.

The stairwell becomes an architectural feature in its own right, where polished steel, mirrors and changes in level amplify the perception of depth and introduce unexpected variations in perspective. On the exterior, however, the asymmetrical staircase on the starboard side – designed to connect the main deck with the upper deck – breaks the line by creating a passage and leaving a section of the upper gangway unresolved, giving the impression that it is almost suspended. The connection with the sea is shaped by bulwarks that slowly open toward the water. These surfaces feature openings such as portholes, skylights, and glazed panels, which are not arranged in a strict sequence or a purely decorative pattern but serve the practical needs of life on board. In this setting, natural light becomes a focal point: it is not the amount of light that matters most, but how it is managed and dispersed. Surfaces are deliberately designed to reflect and diffuse light, emphasising the texture of the materials, the three-dimensional form, and the sense of depth within the space. The Riva 112 Dolcevita Super is therefore the highly successful outcome of a design philosophy that defines luxury as a synthesis of form and function. In a yachting world often focused on creating a spectacular effect, this boat chooses the more challenging path: moderation. And it is precisely in this quest for balance between order and movement, between symmetry and variation, between rationality and perception that its most authentic character lies.

Sportiva, aggressiva e, soprattutto, open.

Despite the abundance of furniture from bow to stern, moving aboard is always smooth.

It measures 15.90 metres in overall length and 4.61 metres in beam, with a shallow draught of just 1.35 metres and a displacement of 17 tonnes – a figure in line with the lightest competitors in the same category. The deck layout features a central dining area with a galley unit, two sofas (one U-shaped and one straight) and a table with a folding top. This configuration comfortably seats ten guests, all sheltered by the hardtop. The choice of predominantly linear furnishings ensures unobstructed passageways, allowing you to move easily from one side of the boat to the other. This is a key design feature because, despite the abundance of furniture, the 577 Coupé offers exceptional liveability. You never feel trapped: movement between the living area, dining area and helm is always smooth, even when there are numerous guests on board. The stern perfectly embodies contemporary design: the side walls

The V-shaped bow efficiently slices through the waves, and the stern’s deadrise angle provides outstanding stability underway. Trim and visibility remain consistently excellent. The fuel tanks have a capacity of 2,000 litres, resulting in a range always exceeding 250 miles.

and platform can be lowered to create a beach area at water level. The bow, on the other hand, features a three-seater sun deck and a linear sofa without a backrest – a significant detail, as it does not obstruct the view from the helm. The hardtop looks very sturdy. It extends directly from the windscreen and, at the stern, rests on two double pillars. The dashboard is spacious, housing three large chartplotters for easy monitoring of all navigation-related information. That said, the spaciousness does not compromise ergonomics: the throttles, steering wheel and joystick are all within easy reach. The hatch, situated to the left of the bridge, provides access below deck, which comprises a spacious corridor with a linear galley and two cabins: the owner’s cabin and the VIP cabin, both very spacious and with generous volumes, as well as a separate bathroom and shower cubicle. The only drawback is that the cabin doors open in opposite directions, causing them to clash. However, this can easily be remedied by reversing the hinges on one of the two doors. Although the 577 Coupé features a high-performance hull and is powered by twin Volvo Penta D8-IPS engines, each delivering 600 hp, I achieved a top speed of 30 knots. While this isn’t bad, I expected a bit more from such a sporty vessel. Nonetheless, the hull’s waterlines are efficient, allowing the boat to reach planing speed as early as 13 knots. The bow’s deadrise angle ensures a smooth ride over waves, and the Volvo Penta IPS system enhances manoeuvrability. The shipyard is also developing a version with three 600 hp Mercury Verado V12 outboard engines, likely the best choice for those who want to accelerate across the water.

Engine room

Two Volvo Penta D8 engines, each with 600 hp, enable a top speed of 30 knots. Slightly more horsepower could have enhanced performance.

TEST

On deck, a convertible layout provides everything you need for long cruises or extended stays.

AUGUST 2026

Good volumes and EXCELLENT interior SPACE. The height in the sleeping area is always greater than 190 cm.

AUGUST 2026

213

We live in an era of history in which time is increasingly tyrannical. Life, and the things in life, are consumed in a hurry, at a rapid pace. Boat sellers, for example, claim that owners only have a few days to enjoy life on board. That may be true, of course. Yet, fortunately, not everyone thinks that way. Bénéteau does not, and the success of the Swift Trawler range seems to be proof of this belief. Despite not being a large yacht, the new 37 Fly has been designed and built to offer sea dog the experience of sailing without the nightmare of the clock ticking away. In short, the shipyard believes that there are still enthusiasts for longdistance cruising. After all, if it is true, as it is, that sailing is rewarding, why should the pleasure be short-lived? Bill Dixon and Pierangelo Andreani designed the Swift Trawler 37 Fly project in collaboration with Bénéteau. For the interiors and deck, including the flybridge, the decision was made to optimise space, so a versatile layout was chosen. There are no electrical movements that risk wear and tear or breakage, as is sometimes the case. The shipyard utilised floor tracks and hinges, allowing the furnishings to be moved effortlessly. The linear sofa in the cockpit is a clear example of this. Moving towards the stern provides more space in the cockpit, but when moored at anchor, it can be moved further

214

Navigation is easy, both from the inside helm station, thanks to the visibility of the dinette, and from the flybridge.

towards the bow to increase space on the stern platform and, therefore, the area for access to the sea. The ladder for accessing the flybridge has a knob on the deck to secure it close to the dinette. This keeps the cockpit clearer and more airy. When sailing, however, it is held in a more inclined position so that you can easily get on and off the flybridge. There is also room for a tender, obviously not in a garage. At the stern, two davits allow you to hang it overboard. The flybridge has no hardtop to avoid weighing down the structure. The ideal solution when moored is a retractable bimini top that covers the entire surface. The flybridge features an external helm station and a dining table. Continuing the theme of versatility, the linear sofa next to the helm console has a movable backrest: when moved towards the bow, it completes the seating around the dining table, while when moved towards the stern, it becomes a two-seater sofa facing forward, providing company for the captain. The deckhouse is fitted with a classic sun deck and, here too, thanks to a backrest that lifts, you get a linear forward-facing sofa. A lot of attention has been paid to ease of movement on board. The two side walkways are not symmetrical: the starboard one is wider and is level with the cockpit floor. In addition, at the height of the dinette helm station, there is a glass door and, opposite it, another door on the side. In practice, the wheelhouse leads to the gangway and, if desired, also to the quay (if moored English style). The port side gangway, on the other hand, is narrower and raised above the deck to increase the volume below deck. The dinette is fully glazed and equipped with a linear galley, a dining table, a U-shaped sofa, and another linear sofa that can be used with a pull-out table. The 360° view of the sea is guaranteed, as is ventilation, thanks to two large portholes located on the ceiling in the bow area.

A single Yanmar engine with 400 or 440 hp for smooth sailing without excesses: neither in speed, nor in fuel consumption.

TEST

The sleeping area includes the master cabin in the bow and a guest cabin with two bunk beds. There is only one bathroom, but it is large and equipped with a separate shower cubicle. The steering position offers excellent visibility, and the wheel is large, sailboatstyle. The dashboard has excellent ergonomics and provides a great driving experience. The shipyard has chosen to equip the Swift Trawler 37 Fly with a single 400-horsepower Yanmar engine and offers a 440-horsepower engine as an option (which we had in the test version). Navigation is smooth because it barely exceeds 17 knots at maximum speed and takes just over 12 knots to plane. Despite having only one engine and no joystick, the Swift Trawler 37 Fly is very manoeuvrable, both in port and at sea. It handles turns well, giving the feeling of always having the hull under control, even at speeds of 15 knots. The trim is always correct, thanks in part to the Zipwake interceptors fitted to the boat. The engine is not overly powerful and, as a result, fuel consumption is low: at maximum speed, it reaches 93.3 litres/hour, and at minimum speed, it requires only 57 litres/hour.

The seventh TYBA Yacht Charter Show took place in Marmaris, Turkey. The marina showcased about fifty yachts, mostly motor yachts, many exceeding 24 metres, along with catamarans and traditional Turkish gulets – smaller vessels still highly sought after today. The fam trips proved especially engaging, offering brokers and journalists the chance to cruise on these vessels personally. This opportunity allowed attendees to truly understand the appeal of this holiday style, which promises unforgettable experiences.

The TYBA Yacht Charter Show has built on A significant legacy: 36 editions of a small boat show formerly known as Marmaris Yacht Week, which was established in 1981.

Once again this year, the TYBA Yacht Charter Show – a B2B event focused on yacht charter organised in Marmaris, Turkey, by the Yachting and Brokers Association of Türkiye in partnership with ED Fair Organisation – met expectations despite some cancellations due to geopolitical tensions. As a significant event for the eastern Mediterranean’s blue economy, it gathered international brokers, shipowners, industry experts, and the specialist press from around the world. The show provided a valuable platform for discussion and market insights. Alongside approximately fifty yachts and superyachts, traditional Turkish gulets – still prominent in local nautical tourism – were showcased.

These beautifully polished wooden vessels exude a distinctive retro charm. During the lively five-day event, Barche had the opportunity to meet Serhan Cengiz, president of TYBA. Now in its seventh edition, the fair builds on an important legacy: that of Marmaris Yacht Week. The journey started in 1981, when an Australian couple, managing a yacht in Marmaris, organised a small boat show with friends. Its success meant it ran continuously until 2017. In 2018, TYBA took charge and launched a new event, inspired by a proud history. I often say we’ve reached the 43rd event rather than just the seventh, highlighting the milestone that makes this boat show the secondoldest worldwide, after Antigua. Has it always been held in Marmaris? No. As stated in our articles of association, when we founded TYBA in 2017, we thought it would be best to rotate the venue between Bodrum, Göcek and Marmaris. We won’t be changing the venue for the next four years. From the eleventh edition onwards, we’ll probably move it to Bodrum. Has the current geopolitical situation

affected this year’s event? Unfortunately, yes, but we were prepared. We have seen visitor numbers drop by around 30 per cent. The ongoing conflicts, the Gulf crisis and domestic inflation inevitably affect our economy. Today, the Turkish charter market accounts for between 6% and 8% of the total Mediterranean market. Greece remains the sector leader with a share of 30–35%, followed by Croatia, which exceeds 20%, whilst Italy and France stand at between 15% and 20%. What is the Association doing to tackle the economic downturn? At present, VAT on Turkish yachting is 20 per cent; in Greece, it ranges from 5 to 12 per cent, depending on the vessel’s size. The same applies to Croatia and Malta. This gap poses a significant competitiveness challenge for us. For this reason, we are in constant dialogue with our Ministry of Finance. TYBA has two specific requests on the table: to lower the tax and to secure greater incentives to promote yachting, alongside an effective and widespread publicity campaign. What is your relationship with the Mediterranean Yacht Broker Association? We have strengthened our partnership by taking part in various boat shows organised by MYBA. We have also strengthened our contacts with all the industry associations, including Greek Yachting, Croatian Yachting, Maltese Yachting and the European Committee for Professional Yachting. We are undoubtedly in favour of cooperation. According to the figures, the Turkish yachting industry is growing. Shouldn’t the same be true of yacht charter? It certainly should. After all, we have a very long season and a wonderful sea. However, the international situation and Turkey’s geographical location are negatively affecting the yacht charter industry. Everyone thinks our country is unsafe. This is a misconception. One of the Association’s tasks is to dispel this prejudice.

More detailed information about Undine emerges from 1912 onwards, after she was bought by GEORGE J. MARVIN, an entrepreneur from Cowes, who used to INVITE GUESTS ABOARD on take them to watch sailing races closely.

In 19th-century Romantic literature, Undine is a nymph-like spirit who leaves the water in search of human love and an immortal soul.

During the world wars, the ship was required by the British government. It could carry only enough coal for two or three days’ sailing, so it was used to patrol the English coast.

VETERAN BOAT

In the real world, however, Undine is the name of the boat purchased and restored by Alessandro Vismara, a naval architect with a deep passion for the history of British yachting. In 2022, he set out to find a wooden yacht to restore: ‘I wanted to discover in detail how boats were built in the late 19th century; I wanted to uncover their secrets’, he confesses. ‘I was told of a boat in a state of semiabandonment at Burnham-on-Crouch’. This was Undine, built by Camper & Nicholsons. Launched on 7 May 1895 as Molly, she was equipped with an 11-horsepower steam engine. G.A. Hacket, her first owner, kept her for three years before selling her to T. Stuart Ockleston, who renamed her Undine. Sadly, the original construction plans are no longer available, likely lost in the fire that destroyed the Gosport shipyard on 23 December 1910. Fortunately, the Lloyd’s Register Foundation archives include a midship section of Molly, which is highly significant. It offers detailed information on the structure, thicknesses, and materials used. The keel was constructed from elm, while the frames, stringers, and fore and aft stanchions were made of English oak. The deck comprised pine and teak, with the planking below the waterline made of pitch pine and above the waterline of teak. Another valuable document from 1895 gives us an insight into the original appearance of this 20.70-metrelong boat. It is a photograph by Beken of Cowes: in all her Victorian

splendour, Molly appears slender and elegant, with a gracefully pronounced bow. The wheelhouse is situated aft of the funnel and is exposed to the elements. At the stern, a low wooden deckhouse provides comfort and headroom for a small saloon. The hull is painted white, whilst a single mast without spreaders rises at the bow. That said, information about the yacht’s early years is scarce and unclear. We know a little more from 1912 onwards, the year in which Undine was purchased by George J. Marvin, a Cowes-based entrepreneur who used to invite guests on board every Saturday afternoon or to watch regattas. During the two world wars, the boat was requisitioned by the British government. Because it could carry only enough coal for two or three days’ sailing, it was used to patrol the English coast. After the war, the boat was returned to the heirs of Marvin, who had died in 1940, but they sold it. In 1947, it underwent restoration, and its propulsion system was replaced with two internal combustion engines (one of which served as a spare). Aesthetically, the funnel was preserved, and the tall mast was replaced with two shorter ones. The main exterior changes included relocating the rudder column – moving it forward of the funnel – and adding a prominent teak deckhouse around it. Information about the interiors is limited, but it is likely that the cabin near the midship section was introduced at this stage, utilizing the space vacated by removing the boiler and coal bunkers. The rest is history: the yacht changed hands again and was even used as a houseboat. In 1974, the boat was renamed Undine of Solent and underwent further restoration. In 1986–87, the auxiliary engine was removed for good. At the same time, the main engine was replaced: a 127-horsepower, sixcylinder Gardner 6LX diesel engine from 1964 was installed and is still in use today. In 1990, after being sold and moved to Burnham-on-Crouch, it underwent further lengthy restoration work, which was effectively completed by Vismara.

Vismara’s touch

Organising the transport took months, from spring to autumn 2023. Since the yacht was too heavy, the engine and about 5 tonnes of ballast had to be removed to stay under the 25-tonne limit for lorry transport. The selected shipyard, Officine Alto Adriatico in Monfalcone, was 1,600 kilometres away. ‘I spent the initial year dismantling and cataloguing the boat, with assistance from the shipyard staff and the owners, Giorgio Ferluga and Lorenzo Luxich. It was a captivating process that taught me a great deal’, remembers Vismara. From the outset, the restoration was guided by several requirements: to respect the boat’s overall appearance, though not without a few ‘exceptions to the rule’.

‘I wanted to incorporate the engine hatch into the deckhouse, so I decided to set the deckhouse back by about 60 centimetres and to level the entrance to the engine room with a glass panel that allows you to keep an eye on the engine’, confesses the architect. Another unusual aspect is the steering column, where the wheel is attached to a yoke that features a Kelvin & Hughes compass from 1857, iron counterweights, and a hydraulic system. Evidence on board indicates that Undine’s steering was initially managed with iron cables, not the current device. This creates a truly fascinating setup, complemented by the interiors, which are designed for six people, including a cozy master cabin amidships for two. The aft saloon is very cosy. Much of the furniture is original. The seating, which is interrupted by the door leading to the galley and one of the three bathrooms on board, can seat 7–8 people. ‘Overall, Undine is still largely original’, assures Vismara. As for the planking and deck, only a few planks have been recently replaced. The keel, frames, and beams are original. Of the frames, at least 60% remain from the original, while the rest are from the restoration that started in the 1990s. Vismara only needed to replace one frame, but the process was very expensive in every aspect. The architect’s face still shows signs of fatigue, combined with a sense of achievement.
