HAT IS THE CU R The curse in the book, Holes, is bad luck. The curse is bad luck over men in the Yelnats family. It all started with Elya, Stanley’s great-great-grandfather. He wanted to marry Myra, but Igor, the pig farmer, also wanted to marry Mayra and offered his fattest pig to Myra’s father for the marriage. Elya needed a fatter big than Igor to marry Myra. He goes to his Egyptian friend, Madam Zeroni, for help. Madam Zeroni didn’t want to help at first, because she thinks that Myra had an empty head. She said that Elya should go to America. “That’s where your future lies. Not with Myra Menke.” (30) Elya was only 15 and only had eyes for Myra’s beauty. Madam Zeroni hated it when Elya was so forlorn. He angrily left Myra’s house and went past the harbor where they were looking for sailors. The ship was going to America. He remembered what Madam Zeroni said and went to the ship to get to America. When he was on the boat, he remembered about his promise to Madam Zeroni. He forgot to carry her up the mountain. That is how he broke the promise and put the curse on the Yelnats. Another time the family got unlucky is when the first Stanley Yelnats moved from New York to California, with a lot of money. His carriage got robbed by Katie Barlow and all the money was stolen. Stanley’s father is an inventor and didn’t have any luck yet and poor Stanley also has to suffer from the curse. “He was innocent of the crime for which he was convicted. He’d just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.” (7) Stanley has to go to Camp Green Lake because very expensive shoes got stolen and landed on his head. As punishment he had to go to Camp Green Lake or to jail. He has so much bad luck, and it is all because of his great-great grandfather, Elya.
