Inordertoensurethatallofourstudents aresuccessful,challenged,andincluded, HighSchoolstudentsareoffereda numberofpathwaystosupportthe developmentoftheirstrengthsand passionsandhelpthemmove confidentlytotheirpost-ISBdestinations

TheseexternalcoursesorcredentialsalsocounttowardthecreditsrequiredfortheHS Diploma,andthereforeallowfordualormultipleadditionalqualificationoptions. AllstudentswhomeetcreditrequirementsatISBgraduatewithaUSHighSchool Diploma.InadditiontotheirHighSchoolDiploma,studentsmayseekexternal credentialstoenablethemtoaccessthepost-secondaryeducationoftheirchoice. TheISBHSDiplomaisarecogniseddiplomathatallowsstudentstogainaccessto manyuniversityandcollegeprogrammesaroundtheworld.Some universities/collegeshaveadditionalcredentialrequirementswhichcanbeobtained whilestudyingatISB.TheHSCounsellingteamisbestsuitedtoprovideguidanceand helpstudentslocatetheinformationtheyneedtomakechoicesthatwillsupporttheir ambitions

Personal Learning

TheHighSchoolPersonalLearning Programmestrivestoprovideeach studentwithaspacetogrowbothasa valuedmemberofourHScommunity andasanindividualwithdiverse abilities,passions,andambitions.The programmeisdesignedtobuild communityandapositiveschoolculture, whilstalsosupportingstudents'socioemotionalgrowthandproviding studentswithavoiceandchoicein designingaspectsoftheirPersonal Learning/CASprogramme.

AllstudentsatISBfromGrades10to12participateinarobustCommunityEngagement programme Theprogrammeaimstohelpstudentsdeveloptheirownidentityandan understandingoftheidentityofothers,creatingastrongerunderstandingof citizenship.Thiscaninvolvevolunteeringoncampus,butfocusesonvolunteeringwith organisationsacrossBrusselsthatworktoaddresstheauthenticneedsofthe homeless,elderly,refugees,underprivilegedchildrenetc.

Throughparticipationintheprogrammestudentsdeveloptheirsocial,self management,communication,leadership,andcollaborationskills Italsoprovides studentswiththeopportunitytoidentifypotentialareasofstudyand/orfuturecareer paths.StudentsaresupportedthroughthisprogrammebytheCASCoordinator,the CASsupervisors,andthePLadvisors.

HighSchoolCounselling

AllstudentsatISBfromGrades10to12areindividuallysupportedbyadedicatedteam ofHighSchoolcounsellorswhooverseestudentpathwayswhileintheHS;thisincludes academicplanning,monitoring,supportandprogress,goal-setting,personaland socialhappiness,balanceandwellness.Counsellorsareapointofcontactfor studentsandparentsrelatedtosuccessatISBandbeyond.

AsignificantfocuswithintheHSCounsellingprogrammeisdeveloping,preparingfor, andinmanycasesapplyingtopost-ISBpathways TheHSCounsellorsareglobal expertsandrunateamapproachwhenworkingwithstudents.Thisprocessis student-led,butweguide,support,scaffold,andtrackallalongtheway Itisour commonobjectivetoworktowardseachstudent’sindividualgoalsandsuccess!

Thisisanindividualisedcourseavailabletostudentswithadiagnosedlearningneed. Thefocusisonknowingwhenandhowtoaskforhelp Withthesupportoftheteacher, studentsidentifyindividualstrengthsandweaknesses.Studentsenrolledinthe Resourceclassdevelopanunderstandingoftheirownlearningprofile,developareas oftalent,andfocusonbuildingtheirstrengthswhiletargetingspecific,compensatory learningstrategiestoremediateunderlyingskilldeficiencies Balancedwiththisskill work,studentsalsoreceivere-teachingandrevisionsupportofthecontentoftheir courses,asnecessary.

IntensiveLearningSupport

TheHighSchooloffersanintensive,life-skillsbasedclassroom,forstudentswith cognitiveordevelopmentaldisabilities Studentsworkinasmallgroupwith personalisedgoalssupportedbyspecialisedprofessionals,incollaborationwith mainstreamteachersonfunctionalacademicandsocialintegrationopportunities Individualtherapiesarewellintegratedintotheirdaytoensuretransfertothenatural environment Thereisanemphasisonindependentlife-skillsandinvocationalstudies, andcommunityskillstoprepareforasuccessfullifeafterISB.Atransitionplanis developedcollaborativelywithfamiliestosupportthesenextsteps Studentsearnan individualiseddiplomabasedontheirILPgoals.

Monitoring

Studentswhohavediagnosedlearningneedsbutdonotneeddirectinterventionare monitoredtoensurethatallfacultywhoworkwiththisstudentknowabouttheir learningprofileandwillmakethenecessaryaccommodationsforneedsintheclass. ThestudentisnotscheduledintoaResourceblock,butratherthestudenthascheckinappointmentswiththeircasemanager.

Inordertokeepformalaccommodationslegitimateandupdated(regardlessofthe supportmodel),studentsintheLearningSupportprogrammeneedupdatedpsychoeducationaltesting(orotherrelevantassessmentbasedoncondition)everythree yearstoconfirmtheycontinuetoqualifyforsupportandanyformal accommodations.Iftheydonotqualify,andthereisnolongerapresenceofthe previouslyidentifiedcondition,theywillbeexitedfromsupportandwillnolonger receiveformalaccommodations.

EnglishLanguage Development

TheHighSchooloffersaseriesofcoursesforstudentsenteringISBwithadeveloping commandoftheEnglishlanguage.EnglishLanguageLearnerswillbeprovidedwith thespecialistsupportandscaffoldingtheyneedtoenablethemtosuccessfully accessthecurriculuminEnglish,thepredominantlanguageofinstructionatISB.

Forattendingstudents,placementismadebytheELDteacherwiththeguidanceof WIDAtestingandclassresults.Forarrivingstudents,aplacementtestwillbearranged bytheCounsellingdepartment Therearefourlevelstargetinginstructionforstudents toimprovetheircompetenceinEnglish.

APPhilosophy &Practices

AdvancedPlacement(AP)

Collegeboard(anexternalorganisationthatalsocoordinatesthePSATandSAT)has designedanumberofcoursesreferredtoasAdvancedPlacement(AP)Courses. Thesecourses,eachoneyearinlength,aremodelledafterintroductory college/universitycoursesintheUnitedStates.StudentsareabletoenrolinAPcourses aspartoftheirISBDiplomarequirementsstartingfromgrade10,andonoccasion grade9(whenanidentifiedchallengeisrequired).

StudentswhowishtoearnexternalAPqualificationswilltaketheexternalexamsatthe endofthecalendaryearinwhichtheycompletedthecourse.Asnotallstudents partakeinexternalcredentialing,thecostchargedbyCollegeboardfortheexamand fortestadministrationispassedonandbilledtotheparentsforeachAPexam. StudentswhodonotchoosetotaketheAPexamwillnotbeallowedtohave“AP”inthe coursetitleontheirtranscript.

APCoursePlacement

ToenrolinanAPcourseatISBthefollowingpolicyapplies: Allprerequisiterequirementsmustbemet(seeHSProgrammeofStudies), 9thgradestudentsmayonlyenrolinuptooneISBofferedAPcourse, 10thgradestudentsmayonlyenrolinuptotwoISBofferedAPcourses, 11thand12thgradestudentsmayonlyenrolinuptothreeISBofferedAPcourses. NewstudentstoISBwishingtoenrolinAPcourseswillneedtocompleteplacement testsasnecessary.

APCourseofferings

APCoursesareofferedfromthevarioussubjectareas,someonarotationalbasis everyotheryear(forexample,MicroeconomicsinoneyearandMacroeconomicsin thenext).AfulllistofcourseofferingscanbeseenintheProgrammeofStudies.

Self-StudyCoursesandExams

StudentswhowishtostudyanAPcoursethatisnotofferedbyISBinthatyearmay choosetoenrolinanindependentstudycourseandselfstudyfortheexam Some studentschoosetodothisontheirown,otherschoosetoenrolinanonlinecourse. Whenthisisthecase,ISBwillsupportstudentstoenrolforandsittheAPexamatISB, andthereforethereisafeethatwillbepassedontothefamily.Studentswhowishto registerforself-studyexamsmustcompletetheregistrationprocesswiththeAP Coordinatorbefore15Novemberoftheyearoftheirexam.ISBdoesnotallowstudents toself-studyanAPcoursewithaportfoliocomponent.

APPrerequisitesandPlacement

AsAPcoursesareuniversitylevelcoursesandhaverequiredpre-knowledgeinorder forstudentstobeabletoaccesstheleveloflearning,manyhaveprerequisite recommendationsorrequirementstoenrolinthecourse Somecoursesaremore accessiblethanothersforthisreason,andtherefore,astudent'steacherand counsellorshouldbeabletoadvisethembestforenrolments,especiallyforstudents takingthemingrade10,andinsomecasesgrade9.Theseprerequisitesarelistedin theProgrammeofStudies

APAssessmentandGrading

APCoursesarescoredona1-5scale,eachrepresentinghowqualifiedthestudent wouldbetoearncreditattheuniversitylevelforthedemonstrationoftheirknowledge ThisgradecomessolelyfromtheexternalexamthatisadministeredinMayofthe yearthatthestudentscompletethecourse ThecourseofferedatISBisdesignedto helpthestudentlearnthematerialaswellaspreparefortheexam.ISBwillawarda gradeonitsreportona1-7scalebasedofftheconversionchartlistedinanabove section.

APRegistration&Fees

Inordertotakeexternalexaminations,studentsmustberegisteredwiththeexternal bodythatawardsthecertification.ForAPexaminations,studentsmustberegisteredfor theirexam(s)withCollegeBoard.StudentregistrationtakesplaceinSeptemberofthe yearoftheirexam.ItisanexpectationthatallstudentsenrolledinanAPcourse,withthe exceptionofAPFrenchLanguageandCulture/French4,willberegisteredtotaketheAP examinMay.

Howregistrationworks

StudentsreceivealetterinSeptemberoftheyearoftheirexamaskingthemto confirmtheirpersonaldetailsandtheirintentiontotakeexams.Oncestudentsreturn thisletter,theyareregisteredwithCollegeBoard.

InNovember,theirregistrationisfinalisedandfamiliesareinvoicedforAPexamination fees(approximately120EURpercourse)aswellasISBexamadministrationfees Any changestoregistrationstatusafter15Novemberwillincurlatefees.

GuidelinesforAP StudentsatISB

Homework

APcoursesareconsideredrigorous,college-levelcourses.Assuch,studentsshould expecttocompletehomework,assignments,andrevisioninordertoensuretheir successintheAPcoursestheyaretaking.

WhilethefinalscoreformostAPcoursesisentirelybasedonperformanceintheMay exams,someAPcoursesdorequirestudentstocompleteanduploadportfoliotasks. Whenthisisthecase,studentsareexpectedtorespecttheinternaldeadlinessetfor theseportfoliotasksbytheirteachers.Failuretomakeadeadlinecanhavenegative consequencesforthestudentorevenpreventthemfromsubmittingtheirfinalworkto CollegeBoard

Allportfolioworkwillbecheckedforacademicintegrity.Facultyarerequiredto declarethattheybelievethattheworksubmittedisyourown,andthismeansthat theyhavetobeconfidentthatcollusionwithothersorplagiarismhavenottaken place

InclusiveLearning andAssessment

AtISB,inclusionisattheheartofourapproachtoourAPprogrammeandourmission toensurealllearnersarechallenged,included,andsuccessful Wearecommittedto supportingCollegeBoard’saccessandequitypoliciesbyensuringthatallstudents areabletoaccesstheirassessment,andthattheassessmentcanmostaccurately measureastudent’sknowledgeandskills.

Accessandinclusionarrangementsforlearning,teaching,andassessmentforAP coursesareconsideredwhenalearnerisidentifiedasneedingsupportthroughthe StudentStudyTeamprocess.ForAPcourses,thiswillinclude(butnotbelimitedto) instanceswhenalearnerfaceslong-termchallengesorachronicmedicalissue, illness,orcondition.

TheschoolcanprovideinclusiveaccessarrangementsforstudentstakingAP examinationsthatalignwiththeirnormalwayofworkingintheHighSchool.The purposeofthesearrangementsisnotonlytoensurethatallstudentshaveequal opportunitiesforsuccess,butalsotohelpstudentsdeveloptheacademicand advocacyskillstheywillneedintheirpost-secondaryendeavours.Theneedforthese arrangementsisdeterminedbytheLearningSupportdepartment,inconsultationwith parentsandteachers.

AccessarrangementsmustnotonlyapplytostudentsduringsummativeAP assessments,butalsobeavailablethroughoutthecourseofstudy(thisincludesall classroomworkandformativeassessmentsthatarepartofeverydaylearningand teaching).

AcademicIntegrity

AcademicIntegrityintheAPProgramme

APstudentsmustdemonstrateasustainedcommitmenttoacademichonestyintheir work.Inordertoavoidplagiarisminportfolioorotherassignments,CollegeBoard recommendsthatstudents:

Createtheirownworkandavoidcopyingworkthatisnottheirown. Properlyciteandreferenceallsourcesofinformationusedintheirwork. Takecarefulnotesandkeeptrackofsourcesduringtheresearchprocess. Paraphraseinformationandcitethesource. Beawareofthedifferencebetweencommonknowledgeandinformationthat requirescitation.

Ensurethatalldata,sources,andauthorsusedintheirworkarelegitimateand accurate.

Inaddition,studentsareheldtohighstandardsofintegrityduringtheirAP examinations.Misconductduringanexaminationincludes,butisnotlimitedto,taking unauthorisedmaterialintoanexaminationroom,disruptivebehaviour,and communicatingwithothersduringtheexamination.

StudentsshouldbeawarethatanybreachofCollegeBoardregulationswillresultin seriousconsequences,includingsuspensionandpossiblycancellationofAPscores

CodeofConductfor APExaminations

Bothmockandexternally-assessedAP examinationsaregovernedbystrictcodesof conducttomakesurethattheassessment takesplaceinafair,safeandcomfortable environment.Allstudentswillneedtobecome familiarwiththeexpectationsforconduct duringtheexaminations

Arrivingfortheexamination

Allstudentsshouldarriveatschool30minutesbeforetheexamsarescheduledto begin.Whencandidatesareadmittedtotheexamroom,theymustenterinaquiet andorderlymanner.

Intheexamroom

Oncetheyareintheexamroom,studentsmustnotcommunicatewithanyoneother thantheproctorsforthedurationoftheexam.Nofoodordrinkcanbetakenintothe examinationroomunlessthecandidatehasamedicalcondition.Theproctorwilltell candidateswheretositandcandidatescantakeonlythematerialspermittedfortheir examtotheirdesk Nobagsormobilephonesarepermittedintheexamroom Candidatesarenotallowedtoborrowanythingfromanothercandidateduringan examination.

Latearrivals

Candidatesareallowedintotheexamroomwhilethegeneralinstructionsforthe examarebeingread Afterthistime,theyarenolongerallowedintheexamroomand willnotbeabletotaketheirscheduledexam

Academicmisconductduringexaminations

Allworkcompletedduringanexaminationandsubmittedforassessmentmustbethe authenticworkofthestudent Anycollusion,plagiarism,referencetounauthorised material,orcommunicationbetweencandidatesmayconstitutemisconductand leadtothecancellationofthestudent’sscores.

TheBTECprogrammemodelsreal-lifesituationsinthatstudentsareexpectedto adherestrictlytothedeadlinessetoutbytheirteacher.Thismeansthattheirsuccess dependsonplanningtheirtimeandmanagingtheirworkloadcarefully When submittingtheirwork,studentswillneedtoensurethat:

ResubmissionofWork

TheBTECprogrammedoesoffertheopportunitytobuildonstudentlearningandto improvetheirgradesiftheydonotgettotheleveltheywantontheirfirstsubmissionof theirwork.Hence,ifastudentdoesnotdemonstrateanyofthecriteriaatapointintime whentheysubmittheirworksummativelyforthefirsttime,studentsareallowedto resubmittheirwork,aslongasallofthefollowingrequirementsaremet:

Iftheentryconditionstoauniversityorcollegeofhighereducationrequireastudent totakeacombinationofsubjectsoutsidethescopeofaregularorbilingualdiploma, thestudentmayapplytotheIBforpermissiontotakeanon-regulardiploma.

Internalassessment(IA)isanassessmentsthatiscompletedduringthedurationof thecourse,withtheguidanceandsupervisionofateacher.Theworkisthenmarked bytheteacherandasampleissenttoanIBmoderator.Thissampleischecked againstworldwidemarkingstandardsandadjusted,ifrequired.Internalassessments aresetaccordingtosubjects,andeachsubjecthasadifferentweightingattachedto itsIA Internalassessmentdatesarespreadoverthe2yearsofthecourses,according totheinternaldeadlinescalendar.Theinternalassessmentscanmakeupbetween 20%and50%ofasubject’soverallmark.AttheDepartment’sdiscretion,andwith advancedwarning,studentsmaybegivenaschool-based-grade(1-7)fortheir externalorinternalassessmentsthatcountasamajorassessment.Thishasno impactonthefinalIBscoreawarded
