Understanding how the properties of materials affect their usage
Science – Class fying Materials
Understanding how emot ons and deas can be expressed through different med a
Conceptual Understandings
Learners understand that:
The properties of a materia will determ ne how usefu it is for a particular purpose
Everyday materials can be physically changed and combined in a variety of ways so that the new material or combination meets a part cular purpose
The properties of a materia affect the extent to which it can be reused or recyc ed
Learning Engagements
An exp oration of materials a lows us to understand how the propert es of particular materials make them useful for certain purposes Through this module learners have an opportunity to explore and identify the properties of materials and use th s knowledge to attempt to solve var ous problems and make dec sions as to what would be the best materia to use in particular a c rcumstance They test their observations by designing and carrying out exper ments based on the properties of mater als Learners place materia s on continuums rating them fromtransparent to opaque, flexib e to rigid, waterproof to absorbent, holding or resist ng heat Learners exp ore a range of “what f?” questions think ng about what wou d happen f everyday objects were made of alternative materials
Learners understand that:
Some of the characteristics of env ronments are natura and others are the result of human act vity When env ronments change, some liv ng th ngs are no longer able to meet their basic survival needs Human activities includ ng their own impact the environment in ways which can be positive or negative
Th s module prov des an opportunity for earners to examine and investigate the landscape and natural forms of their local and g obal environment The un t engages children in exploring regions of the world and their geographica features They nvestigate the surrounding natura landscape of the forest, identifying features such as h lls, valleys, ponds, marshland They learn how to use tools, l ke maps to nav gate their local environment They compare our forest andscape with surrounding landscapes ike the school grounds, local village, and park to observe and measure the human mpact They exp ore ways that human actions and natural forces can change environments
Th s module is linked to nformational report wr ting and involves the learners in writing and reading reports
Language Arts, Fine Arts-Communication
Learners understand that:
People share the r customs and values, and appreciate other cultures through different creations We tend to get our customs and values from the ma or groups we belong to Individua s are similar and different both physical y and n other ways and that our differences can sometimes cause conflict
There are many ways to communicate an dea through the arts Th s module prov des an opportunity for earners to examine and investigate a variety of arts and art forms Learners view and express ideas about specific artists, including themselves and their peers The underlying focus is a ways through the lens of how and what is being communicated by the artist The grand f nale for th s module is a grade level production presented n our theatre to the other children in the ECC and grade level parents The production ncludes original artwork produced by learners under the gu dance of the c assroom teachers and our specialist art teacher This module is nked to develop ng skil s in the express ve arts to enable learners to share their thoughts, emotions and opinions It s also linked to narrative writing and involves the learners in writing narrat ve retells
TRANSFERABLE Research skills:
FIND EVIDENCE
Learners are able to:
dentify the kinds of sources where evidence to answer a quest on or achieve a purpose m ght best be found
RECORD EVIDENCE SYSTEMATICALLY
Learners are able to:
record evidence n systematic, organised ways that support answering a question or achieving a purpose
TRANSFERABLE Thinking skills:
object
that landscapes and env ronments differ from one another as a resu t of their natural characteristics and the human actions that have occurred there
M a t h e m a t i c s
Operations and Algebraic Thinking:
Represents and solves problems involving addition and subtraction
Uses addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions
Adds and subtracts within 20
Adds and subtracts within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10 Understands the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false
Number and Operations: Understands place value
Counts to 120, starting at any number less than 120 In this range, reads and writes numerals and represents a number of objects with a written numeral Counts back from 100
Understands that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones Compares two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols > , = , and <
Uses place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract
Adds within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value Subtracts multiples of 1 and 10 (1-100) using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value
Given a two-digit number, mentally finds 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used
Measurement and Data: Measures and estimates lengths in standard units
Orders three objects by length; compares the lengths of two objects indirectly by using a third object Expresses the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end
Works with time and money
Tells and writes time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks
Represents and interprets data
Organizes, represents, and interprets data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another
Geometry:
Reasons with shapes and their attributes
Partitions circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of
Mathematical Thinking
Create mathematical models
Demonstrates their thinking with materials, pictures, numbers and equations Demonstrates their thinking on a numberline
Reading:
Accuracy and Fluency - Reads texts accurately and fluently at the following level
Reads I/J level texts accurately
Concepts about Print - Draws on context, phonics and sight words when reading Comprehension Strategies - Makes meaning of information
Uses a range of strategies to decode text to read accurately (skip and return, chunking, using context, noticing endings, use known words to solve new words)
Responds to and makes personal connections with facts, characters and situations while reading Retells main events after reading longer texts
Asks questions and infers meaning to interact with and understand fiction and non-fiction text while reading Identifies and discusses important information from and beyond fiction and non-fiction texts
Writing:
Connecting Information Uses a range of connecting language features to join ideas within and across sentences
Write opinion pieces in which they introduce the topic or name the book they are writing about, state an opinion, supply a reason for the opinion, and provide some sense of closure
Write informative / explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure
Write narratives in which they recount two or more appropriately sequenced events, include some details regarding what happened, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide some sense of closure
Innovate on familiar texts by using similar characters, repetitive patterns or vocabulary
Use frequently occurring conjunctions (e g , and, but, or, so, because)
Use of Vocabulary - Uses a range of appropriate vocabulary to support the purpose of the text
Use frequently occurring affixes as a clue to the meaning of a word
Identify frequently occurring root words (e g , look) and their inflectional forms (e g , looks, looked, looking)
Sort words into categories (e g , colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent
Define words by category and by one or more key attributes
Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e g , note places at home that are cozy)
Distinguish shades of meaning among verbs differing in manner (e g , look, peek, glance, stare, glare, scowl) and adjectives differing in intensity by defining or choosing them or by acting out the meanings
