International School of Brooklyn 2023-2024 Report of Gifts

Page 1

Dear Families and Friends of ISB,

Thank you to everyone in the community who gave to our Fund for Excellence during the 2023-2024 school year. Together, we reached our goal and raised $353,739 for ISB through donations from parents, alumni families, staff, faculty, grandparents, and associated companies and foundations! These dollars helped enhance the vibrant education our students received throughout the year. Because of your generosity, our school community benefited from:

Over 65 local, domestic, and global trips for students 15 author and illustrator visits

Over 75 professional development trainings

Enhanced classroom technology and resources Renovations to the West Building restrooms

And more!

This would not be possible without the help of our Fund for Excellence Parent Ambassadors! These dedicated volunteers whose commitment to raising awareness and encouraging support for the FFE helped us achieve our fundraising goal.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, the Senior Leadership, our faculty and staff, and – most importantly –our students, thank you!

Joe Santos Head of School Parent, ‘22 and ‘25

MATCHING GIFTS

Your pledge lets us know that ISB can count on your support in the current academic year. All pledge payments must be made by June 30.

Please contact advancement@isbrooklyn.org if you would like to fill out a pledge card.

Many companies match employee donations on a 1:1 or even 2:1 basis.

Please ask your payroll administrator or Human Resources department if your company matches gifts. It usually takes only a few minutes to fill out the form, and it can often be done online.

Please let the Advancement Office know to expect your matching gift at advancement@isbrooklyn.org.

APPRECIATED STOCK

Gifts of appreciated stock may allow you to receive a tax deduction for the stock’s current market value and favorable treatment of capital gains.

If you would like to make a gift of appreciated stock, please contact Joe Santos at joesantos@isbrooklyn.org.

GIFTS IN KIND

Please consider how you might help support ISB with sponsorship for events such as the Spring Benefit and Pecha Kucha! This is also a great opportunity for local businesses to reach a wider audience through their gift to help support these community events. ISB also works on projects that require the skills of artists, architects, builders, filmmakers, and culinary professionals.

If you are interested in donating products or services to the school, please contact advancement@isbrooklyn.org.

VOLUNTEER

Parent volunteers are vital to helping us reach our fundraising goals and cultivating a culture of philanthropy in our community. Please consider volunteering to be a Fund for Excellence Ambassador and help ISB grow our annual giving through peer outreach.

To learn more about ISB’s Fund for Excellence Ambassador program, please contact advancement@isbrooklyn.org.

We are continually grateful for your generous gifts to the ISB Annual Fund for Excellence.

Your support sustains our mission and provides every ISB student with an extraordinary educational experience.

Board of Trustees dedicates countless hours to the school’s governance, financial management, and long-range planning. We are grateful to ISB’s Trustees for their service to ISB in the 2023-24 academic year.

Our 2024 Spring Benefit was a celebration of the past, present, and, most of all, the future of our school. Thank you to the many supporters who helped us raise $58,735 for the ISB Annual Fund for Excellence. A very special thanks to our generous event sponosors and to Night Kitchen, AP Wine Imports, Other Half Brewing, Son Piragüero, DJ Selecta Supa T, Ben Hammersley, Annie Yun, Rebecca McBride, and Caroline Mardok for making this evening shine bright!

What is the Fund for Excellence?

The Annual Fund for Excellence (FFE) was established to help bridge the ongoing gap between the school’s operational costs and revenue and to provide immediate, unrestricted funds for learning opportunities that are not covered by tuition fees alone.

Why does ISB need to raise funds?

Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating a student at ISB. About 91% of the school’s revenue is generated from tuition. The remaining 9% is derived from after school and summer program fees and state funding (approximately 7%) and the Fund for Excellence (approximately 2%).

What does the Fund for Excellence support?

The Fund for Excellence supports our unique pedagogical model, a combination of language immersion and inquiry-based learning. These funds are used to enhance our curriculum and student experience with field trips, experiential learning experiences, and workshops through which our students’ studies come alive; help provide faculty professional development opportunities in which our dedicated educators hone their crafts and remain up-to-date on the latest developments in their fields; enhancements to our facilities, classroom resources, and technology; and so much more.

Does my gift support financial aid?

No. International School of Brooklyn’s robust tuition assistance program has been a core aspect of our school’s mission and culture since ISB’s founding. It is important to note that while one third of ISB families receive tuition assistance, and 19% of the budget is allocated for this purpose, the Fund for Excellence is not utilized for tuition assistance.

Why wouldn’t raising tuition solve the problem?

ISB is fully committed to enrolling students from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. While increases in tuition are unavoidable, they restrict access and diminish the education experience for all.

Does participation matter?

Absolutely! We strive for 100% participation as a demonstration of our shared dedication to ISB’s mission. Participation levels are a key barometer for external funders when considering grants and gifts to the school. Every gift — no matter the amount — contributes to the exceptional education that each student receives at ISB.

How much should I give?

Donation amounts can vary widely depending on the financial capacity of the donor. We encourage everyone to contribute a gift that is meaningful to them, whether it’s $100 or $10,000.

Is my gift tax-deductible?

Yes! 100% of your gift is tax deductible. International School of Brooklyn is a 501c3 nonprofit organization. Your contribution is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Our federal tax identification number is 134303389.
