REPORT OF GIFTS 2020-2021
LETTER FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ISB, I began this school year with a profound feeling of optimism. While last year was difficult for all of us, I remain inspired by our students who took it all in stride and adapted to every challenge they were faced with—hybrid learning, masks, distancing, testing, and much more. ISB students are truly flexible learners. This is very much a hallmark of inquiry-based learning, but I especially see this as a testament to the way that our teachers are preparing our students for a world in which adaptability is paramount. Last year, it was amazing to see the strength of this community. As you will read in this report, we saw very high levels of engagement from all of our constituents, including our first-ever Alumni donations to the Annual Fund for Excellence! The outstanding support from our community helped ISB cover a myriad of unforeseen costs in order to keep our students learning throughout the year, as well as provide emergency tuition assistance and additional technology support to some of our families. During this year of social distancing, ISB was also especially fortunate to have such an incredibly dedicated group of parent volunteers who foundcreative ways to keep our tight-knit community connected and cared for. This year, we have started the year on much better footing. We are all looking forward to a return towards normality and can already see this beginning to take shape. Students are enjoying the After School program and setting off on field trips, the ISB Dragons are playing in sports competitions, and we are even planning for some small community gatherings on campus. With the advent of vaccines for the majority of our students, we can even envisage finishing the year without masks and social distancing—wouldn’t that be something! I am so grateful for the commitment that the ISB community continues to demonstrate year in and year out. I join for most of our Admissions tours, and in each one, I retell a quick history of ISB, from its origins in a church basement with 16 students to our current multibuilding campus with 386 students. The other day, I was amazed to learn that we now have 160 Alumni from seven graduating classes. The growth that ISB has achieved in such a short time is remarkable, and this would not be possible without the unwavering support of our community. I would like to extend my deepest thanks to all who contributed their time, energy, and resources to ISB in the 2020-2021 school year, and I look forward to writing the next chapter of our school’s
Best regards,
Joe Santos Head of School

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES
DEAR ISB COMMUNITY, As I sit down to write this letter, I am in awe. In these last 18 months, the ISB community has come together like never before. The school administrative team worked tirelessly to ensure that all students were able to be fully engaged in their learning throughout the year. The teachers’ creativity and dedication was second to none, helping our students build resilience and providing them with a sense of stability during an otherwise uncertain time. Our community has shown agility, focus, compassion, and generosity, and it is because of this that our students’ joy of learning and intellectual curiosity was never lost. The 2020-2021 school year brought a lot of challenges, but, together, we adapted quickly and regularly, and the year culminated with all of our students back on campus for the final few weeks of school. Back in June, I was hopeful we would be through the pandemic by now. While we aren’t quite out of the woods yet, we are certainly stronger and ready for whatever is next. There are many aspects of our lives that continue to shift, and education in New York City never stands still. While our teachers continue to implement new ways of engaging our students, our school leadership continues to find opportunities to ensure ISB operates on a viable budget, while thinking strategically and looking forward. As the year progresses, you’ll be hearing more about these opportunities and how you can participate to ensure ISB’s maturity in this next stage of the school’s growth. As we envision the path forward out of the pandemic, I want to thank all of you for your generous gifts to the Annual Fund for Excellence last year. We exceeded our fundraising goal, which sets us up for continued success this year. I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that ISB continues to evolve as a place that stands out from the crowd, where our students are cultivating the knowledge and skills to make change in their communities and the world at large. With appreciation,
Gretchen Drobnyk President, ISB Board of Trustees Parent, ‘21 and ‘23

ANTI-RACIST AND DIVERSE BOOKS COLLECTION IN HONOR OF DONYELL THOMPSON As a Trustee, as the Diversity Committee Chair, and as a loving parent, Donyell Thompson helped to drive ISB’s diversity initiatives forward. Her passion for education, deep commitment to equity and inclusion, and social justice advocacy was an inspiration to our school community. In February 2021, the Library launched a collection of books in memory of Donyell and the legacy that she left with our school. Community members generously donated 127 books to this vibrant, multilingual collection of children’s literature. The books were intentionally selected to feature culturally responsive and affirming literature about people and children from historically underrepresented communities, including but not limited to Black, Latinx, and Indigenous cultures. The collection also showcases titles that make social justice topics accessible to a variety of age groups.
