MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

DEAR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS OF ISB, To say that this past school year has been the most challenging one of my career as an educator would not be an understatement. Yet, through these tumultuous times, I am all the more profoundly grateful to be a part of this community. Your generosity and engagement supports our school’s mission in so many ways, and this past year was a testament to that. When the pandemic saw ISB close its physical doors last spring, the entire community put its heart and hard work to finding solutions to educational challenges that we had never dreamed that we would need to surmount. I deeply appreciate the extraordinary efforts of our teachers, who created such a dynamic distance learning environment, and our staff, who worked tirelessly all summer to rework our facilities and plan for a safe reopening. The active participation from our families and community members has always been a major strength of ISB, and your participation took on an added importance this year as we navigated the transition to distance learning together. Your donations were instrumental to sustaining our exceptional educational program and supporting our fellow ISB families who were undergoing financial difficulties during the pandemic. This school year also marked a critical move towards our school’s commitment to equity and inclusion. A pillar of our Vision 2021 Strategic Plan is to ensure that ISB’s commitment to a just and inclusive world is reflected in all activities that we engage in. Thanks to the dedication of our community, we have been making great strides in this work that is so essential to our shared core values. In the coming year, academic coordinators and faculty will be working on expanding on our anti-racist curriculum, and Diversity Equity and Inclusion Director Melissa Mack and Assistant Head of School Natalie Judelson will be leading ISB’s newly formed Equity Team, composed of parents, faculty, staff, and Trustees. This work is a community-wide undertaking, and we will rely on all of your input and support to inform the steps we take towards becoming an anti-racist school. Finally, I hope you will join me in celebrating an important milestone of last year: the Class of 2015, ISB’s very first graduating class began their post-high school adventures! In June, we were also excited to hear news of the Class of 2016’s college decisions. We are so proud of our young Alumni, and look forward to seeing the positive change that they will go on to make in the world as adventurers, advocates, and leaders. Thank you all for the time, resources, and support that you give ISB, which make our school the remarkable place that it is. Please know that every gift that you make to ISB helps us prepare our students to become compassionate global citizens in this ever-changing world. Best regards,

Joe Santos Head of School

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

DEAR ISB COMMUNITY, Reflecting on the 2019-20 school year brings up so much emotion that it will be hard to summarize in a short letter. We were faced with unprecedented complexities, confusion, and the sense of going backwards in our lives. However, amid the enormous shifts in our world, came the opportunity to reassess priorities and spend more time doing things that are important to us. Despite the restrictions on getting together, our ISB family grew even closer as you all stepped up in so many ways to take care of one another and to support our school. Through the hard work of our extraordinary teachers and staff, the ever joyous spirits and resilience of our children, the engagement from parents, and the generous contributions from our donors, we were able to see the first stage of this crisis through and emerge even stronger as a community. As a school, we needed to adapt quickly to a new set of constraints thrown at us by the pandemic in the middle of our academic year. With very little planning time, we had to make sure that we were able to provide our students with the best possible educational experience, while retaining all of our teachers and staff on our payroll and operating with a viable budget. Quick thinking from the leadership team enabled us to stabilize the financial situation of the school, and the energy, dedication, and financial support from our community were vital to the success of ISB during this exceptional year. The increase in donations to the Fund for Excellence during the spring also enabled ISB to significantly increase our Tuition Assistance Program for families with sudden loss of income. I am so inspired by the kindness, initiative, and generosity that this community continues to show year after year. The education landscape in New York City is shifting quickly, a trend that had already started a few years back and is accelerating now. An agile organization with a strong community such as ours is well-positioned to find opportunities in the challenges we meet, making our educational program even more relevant to what our students will need in a post-pandemic world. We know that there will be more challenges ahead of us in this new school year, but we also know that we have managed to adapt so far, and I feel confident that the work we are all doing will make this school a better place for the future. In gratitude,

Sophie Panchal President, ISB Board of Trustees Parent ‘20, ‘23 and ‘30

CAPITAL INITIATIVES THANK YOU TO OUR GENEROUS DONORS TOTAL AMOUNT RAISED FROM MARCH 2019 THROUGH JUNE 2020:

$306,900

In the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, we continued with our capital campaign to complete the renovation of the yard, build a learning garden, and outfit a new Middle School science lab. As COVID-19 emerged in March, the Board of Trustees put a temporary halt on these capital efforts. Many of our donors listed below, unrestricted their gifts so that ISB could put the funds to immediate use for the functioning of the school. Our hope is to be able to complete the work on our capital initiatives later in 2021.

EVENTS TO BENEFIT ISB’S ANNUAL FUND FOR EXCELLENCE

Thank you to all who attended our annual Pecha Kucha Evening! We raised $4,220 for ISB’s Annual Fund for Excellence through ticket sales and donations from the event. We are so grateful to our presenters for sharing their stories, expertise, and inspiration in support of ISB: Amanda Burbank, Awa Dabo, Brenna DiCola, Paul Edelstein, Stanley Fertig, Antonio Hernandez, Camille Leroy-Vinclet, Kyle Pope, Sarah Riggs, Marc Scheff, and Nancy Woodruff.

ISB’S COMMUNITY TOAST Our world was completely different this past spring, and we did not know what to expect from our first virtual event, but as always, our community came together in support of ISB as we raised a glass to each other and to the future of our school. Although we were not able to meet in person, the event was a spectacular success! There were 151 ISB families, staff members, and friends who joined on Zoom, 679 raffle tickets purchased, and numerous donations made throughout the evening, raising a total of $50,966 in support of ISB’s Annual Fund for Excellence. The generous support from our community enabled us to earmark additional funds for increased tuition assistance to support ISB families who had been financially impacted by the pandemic. Thank you to all of our donors and attendees for showing such outstanding support during this event! A special thanks to the Spring Benefit Committee, the Development Committee, and our co-host, Paul Edelstein, who got on camera and made us all laugh and smile and encouraged support for ISB throughout the evening!

LEGACY GIVING On December 1st, 2017, the ISB community celebrated the legacy of Founding Head of School, Rebecca Skinner. Since then, we have started a tradition of honoring the founding of ISB by making December 1st our giving day to support the Annual Fund for Excellence. In 2019, we celebrated our community’s shared commitment to our school through a participation challenge. Our challenge was to reach 103 donations between December 1st and December 8th in order to secure a $10,000 donation. The number 103 was chosen for the 103 Alumni from the Classes of ‘15, ‘16, ‘17, ‘18, and ‘19, representing our school’s growth as our students go on to become passionate communicators, curious learners, and future leaders. We exceeded our goal and received 120 donations, raising a total of $39,286. Thank you to all who helped celebrate our school’s history and build on our school’s future by participating in our Founders’ Day of Giving Challenge!

FOUNDERS’ DAY
