Report of Gifts July 2017-June 2018

Dear Friends and Family of ISB,

Dear ISB Community,

It is with great pride that I write to you in my first ever Annual Report as Head of School at ISB. This is the start of my sixth year at the school, a place that personally and professionally I call home. Last year, ISB continued to build upon its solid foundations by unveiling and starting to implement our latest Strategic Plan, Vision 2021.

What a pleasure it is to write this letter every year, as I get the chance to thank you all for caring so much about our school. Members of our community show they are engaged by endlessly volunteering their time, efforts, and money to make ISB a vibrant, open, and creative place. Last year’s theme of “action” seems to have struck a cord and was expressed in many ways, from studentled initiatives on school safety, to teachers’ participation on task forces, to an action-packed Global Day of Service addressing climate change.

Among the many initiatives that were announced or put into place during the second semester were: hiring a second Learning Specialist and the creation of a Learning Support department and new student work areas; hiring a full-time Nurse and creating and outfitting the Health Office; planning a brand new Middle School schedule (designed by a Staff Task Force) that has allowed for the teaching of electives and running clubs during the school day; and announcing our newest affinity group, the Students of Color Society (SOCS). Many of these were possible due to the generosity of our community and their participation in our Fund for Excellence. I am very pleased to report that last year 97% of staff participated and donated to the fund (an extraordinarily high percentage and a clear indication of their commitment to ISB), and the overall number of donors increased by just over 40% in comparison to the prior year. I would like to extend my deepest thanks to the entire community for contributing your time and resources to ISB, which made for an incredibly productive year. I look forward to continue building on this success together with you. Best regards,

The renewed engagement was also evident in our record breaking fundraising achievements. Faculty and staff got behind the cause with 97% participation. Parents, alumni parents, grandparents, friends, and Board members donated generously, bringing the totals to 113% of our budgeted goal. This means the school is able to do more for our children and their teachers, enhancing their overall learning experience. This year we enter the second year of our Vision 2021 Strategic Plan. Many important new initiatives have already been implemented by Joe and his team. The Board of Trustees continues to enable this by planning the adequate funding for these strategic enhancements and we will announce some exciting developments later this year. In the meantime, I personally feel hopeful for the future. Raising kids who understand solidarity and view the world with a caring eye is at the core of ISB’s mission, and it certainly feels like we are doing this all together. Wishing you a peaceful and bright year in 2019. Sincerely,

Joe Santos Head of School

Canadian author, illustrator, and geologist Jacques Goldstyn visited ISB’s 1st Graders. Over 100 students participated in the Climate Action Wrap Up Event, which concluded a week of students’ action to minimize their environmental footprint. Throughout the week, they took steps such as collecting plastic bags, not eating meat, using reusable water bottles, using public transportation instead of cars, and collecting compostable materials.

November

January

5th Grade students participated in “A Day in the Life of the Hudson and Harbor,” a statewide event in which students and community groups collect valuable data on the health of the Hudson River. The 5th Graders went out in the field near the mouth of New York Bay to collect data on the weather, current, tide, turbidity, and chemistry of the water. Their data was sent to Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to help scientists understand the overall health of the Hudson River.

May 8th Graders created an interactive wax museum in which they dressed up and got into character to greet visitors, sharing what they had learned about the people they had researched.

Students shared advice with Joe Santos during an assembly celebrating his installation as ISB’s second Head of School.

The ISB Dragons soccer team won its second consecutive MSAL championship! Go Dragons!

Cuban-American author and historian Emma Otheguy visited 3rd-5th Grade students to read from her book about Cuban poet and revolutionary José Martí. After the reading, Ms. Otheguy answered students’ questions and discussed why she was inspired to write a book about José Martí.

5th Graders visited Washington, D.C. on a three day overnight field trip as part of their “Civic Symbols & Constitutions“ unit of inquiry. ISB Alumni, Staff, and the current Dragons faced off at the annual Alumni & Staff basketball game.

March Ten ISB parents presented their inspiration and work during our 4th Annual Pecha Kucha evening. The Middle School Library club, “The Booklets,” organized a book drive for Project Cicero. The students also helped at the distribution event, where they sorted and organized books collected from the drive to be distributed to teachers from underresourced schools.

Seven faculty members attended the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

June 7th Graders spent a week abroad with their language acquisition classes in Costa Rica and Québec. ISB held commencement exercises for the class of 2018. During the ceremony, Head of School Joe Santos highlighted the students’ commitment to equity and justice, as well as their willingness to take action on issues that are meaningful to them.

Congratulations again to the Class of 2018, whose members are attending the following schools: American School in London (UK), Bard High School Early College Manhattan, Bard High School Early College Queens, Beacon High School, The Berkeley Carroll School, Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn Technical High School, Fiorello H. Fund for Excellence Events In addition to the annual Spring Benefit, ISB hosted its 4th Annual Pecha Kucha evening and a screening of Little Men by Ira Sachs. Cultural events such as these provide opportunities for us to come together and celebrate our unique and incredible community, while also raising funds to support the ISB Annual Fund for Excellence.

Film Screening: Little Men

ISB’s 4th Annual Powered by Pecha Kucha Evening Pecha Kucha is a fast-paced presentation in which presenters share their work, inspiration, and passion in the format of 20 slides shown for 20 seconds each. This event, which celebrated its 4th anniversary at ISB last year, has quickly become a beloved and much anticipated tradition. A huge thank you goes out to our slate of presenters: Louis Cato, Musician, Producer, and Songwriter Megan Reilly Cayten, Vice Chair of National Environmental Education Foundation Vladimir Charles, Architect and President of Second Floor Studios Zachary Golper & Kate Wheatcroft, Chef and Owners of Bien Cuit Havona Madama, General Counsel for Bombora Inc. and Founder of Kid Klass Latoya Nelson Kamdang, Architect, Interior Designer, Professor, & Innovator Pamela Thomas, Founder and President of The Thomas Collective Lucie Tiberghien, Theater Director and Translator Alex Vitale, Professor of Sociology at Brooklyn College

On Friday, January 19, ISB hosted a screening of Little Men. The film was followed by a Q&A with Director and ISB Parent Ira Sachs.

Spring Benefit This year’s Spring Benefit was held on May 11 in an event space in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. This annual tradition brings our community together to celebrate and raise funds for ISB. Each year, as part of the event, we have a special fundraising project; in 2018, this was a school-wide photography project, the ISB Unselfie Project.

The ISB Unselfie Project Spring 2018 In Spring of 2018, we gave our students cameras and asked them to take photos of their favorite part of being a student at ISB. For some, it was a favorite teacher or the friends they have made at school; for others, it was a class or a physical location. What emerged was a colorful mosaic of all the wonderful people, places, and things that make ISB such a special place, as experienced by our students. Parents, grandparents, and community members were invited to sponsor the project and share their thoughts on the back of the students’ photographs. The completed project can now be found in the Reception area of the North Building.
