How about a drift competition? at Orlando Kart Center? I mean, you walk into the facility and it looks like a mini version of a Japanese track. Also, it would be great to have a competition here in Orlando - there aren’t any in Central Florida. And that’s pretty much how Orlando Drift came up with the idea - after that, we got the team together, and made the magic happen!

OKCBR Our first ever event (and competition) was hosted at OKC on January 23rd, 2021 – currently the only drift competition in Central Florida. It included cash winnings, gift certificates from Drift HQ and Interstate performance, along with custom made trophies – with the help of Kroner Granite – and a Bridge Moto steering wheel. There is so much to say yet too little space in our magazine to describe the event in its entirety, so be sure to come out to our next one so you can experience it for yourself! The Orlando Drift team worked tirelessly in order to be able to give our local drivers the chance to compete in their hometown, giving the community here in Orlando an opportunity to experience a competition without having to travel too far. Our intention was to create something that can help the next generation, as well as the current generation of drivers, with an experience that they can take with them in their future careers.

a e z i n a g r o o t e ik What was it l competition?
Firstly, we were able to collaborate with some amazing companies such as Drift HQ, Interstate performance, Tirestacks, Noob Energy, Ghost FPV, and Koki Factory, all of which had a great role in making this event possible. The event itself was also not possible without the awesome Orlando Drift Team, including our Judges, who were able to keep everything movin’. We spent so much time at the track prior to the event that we could have called it home! Because it was our first event, everything had to be done from scratch – from the competition rulebook, to the layout. The track itself offers an awesome layout, where both high-powered cars and lower powered cars can easily keep up with one another, although it is quite tight! It includes a decently long run up, with wider turns, hair pins, and also a ‘manji’ towards the end of the layout. The technicality of the track was also similar to tracks such as Emerald Coast Speedway, where Klutch Kickers is held – minus elevation changes. 7

Because we wanted both pro-built cars, and grass grassroot cars to take part in the competition, we decided to offer two leagues – street and modified league. The track opened bright and early at 7 am, while drivers and spectators started rolling in around 8am. The first unfortunateleague that competed was street, who unfortunate ly, got caught in the rain. Despite track conditions, all 16 drivers killed it on track – we had some awesome close battles with great driving. During the comp, if spectators needed a break, there were awesome vendors that offered a number of products – ranging from energy drinks to perfor performance parts. But one of the most exciting part – for us foodies – were the track’s bar and the Hawaiian food truck – if you love Japanese food, like me, you know the food was bangin’!
Issue 4.indd 12
4/11/2021 8:01:50 PM
OKCBR Once street league was over, and the winners were announced on the podium, we took a break in order to swap out the street and modified league in the pits – being that they are pretty tight – and prepared for our second half of the comp. Let us tell you, if you were excited about street league, modified league was just as fun. We had drivers bring out amazing builds, making a good amount of horsepower. What was even cooler is that modified league started when there was still a bit of sunlight, and ended in the evening. The comp ended around 9pm
giving drivers and crew a good amount of time to get home decently early. We really want to thank spectators, crew, and drivers for keeping the facility clean – the cleanup after the event only took us about one hours, so thank you all for being so respectful! In all honesty, the event – especially being our first one – was pretty smooth. We still have a lot to learn, but being able to host a competition was a dream come true! Make sure to come out for our next one on May 15th, 2021, so you can experience it yourself!

BEHIND THE LENS Story and Media by Keith Abolish “From the military to motor and action sports cultures alike, Keith is a phuck’n content KILLA!. Weather it’s pelting rain or blazing sun shine, his kinda of grind is what captures THE!...notoriously elusive moment that makes us all say “ that’s it! “ post / share / print get at the homie. Before Trans World or Redbull absorbed another deserving collective.” X 40
@POORSTAR
Ever since I was introduced to Keith for the first time by a mutual friend, Forti, I felt Keith had a great vibe and also a good vision in the kind of photography he does. He puts all his focus and effort in every shot he takes. It always seems like a one shot one kill which produces amazing results. Keith gets down to business whenever he tries to innovate his shots to make it one of a kind, and I give him full respect for that. Cannot say anything better about his work. @COLDHARDINK

“The hardcore kid from Rhode Island.” That’s how I was introduced to Keith about 15 years ago. That single definition of a human doesn’t even scratch the slightest surface of who this dude truly is. I was fortunate enough to be there when he first picked up a camer. It was like watching lightning strike. And let me tell you, that storm hasn’t stopped rolling since!
From sneaking around filthy bandos to high end model shoots to drift comps and beyond, Keith can do it all. His kindness, passion, composition and minty fresh edits, puts him on another level!

March 19-21, 2021 Every year, OSW Drifting holds two separate bash events: Black Friday and Spring Break Bash. These events bring out some of the best driving you will see all year. On top of the driving, the partying goes ever harder. For both events, there are three days of driving: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Friday is a fairly easy day, where most drivers set up and get a limited amount of seat time.
Saturday is the day where all the action happens! There is nonstop patrying from the morning all the way into the night. At the end of the day is the highly anticipated King of OSW competition. It’s the only competition held all year and it is one that has serious bragging rights for the rest of the year. Drivers fight in a double elimination knockout bracket to find out who will be the next “King of OSW.”
Story by Elliot Breheny Photos by John Hamilton
Sunday, for many, is a day to recover from the previous crazy and intense day. Drivers and spectators wake up tired and for some, slightly hungover. This year’s Spring Break Bash was something I believe everyone needed. Sure, drift events have been going on, but this was a weekend where people could forget about anything going on in the world. On Friday, drivers were still getting to OSW to setup late into the evening. Tents were up, and cars were dialed in for the long two days ahead of them.
At OSW, some familiar faces in the world of drifting can be found, such as Youtubers Adam LZ, Collete Davis, Taylor Ray and Formula Drift driver Brandon McDowell who, along with all the great locals, put up a great show for the spectators.
24

SBM Saturday, everyone was up early, ready to party throughout the day. The first drivers meeting takes place, and C class starts off the day. For this event, A class was moved up to increase the quality of the show. A class is where all the great tandem trains happen. It’s not uncommon to see five to eight cars on track at once. It’s a great show to watch when all eight drivers are inches from each other on track. King of Spring Break is unique in that drivers just can’t sign up like any other competition. Tommy, who runs OSW Drift, gives the drivers a challenge each year to make it more difficult. This year, he posted that drivers needed to find him
in a very inconspicuous spot in order to sign up. Eventually, everyone found Tommy, signed up, and the bracket was set for the competition. There was another curveball for the drivers -the weather; it was cold, wet, and windy. All of which are not great conditions for drifting. Reigning king Mike Jones was there to defend his crown in his 1JZ powered Lexus LS400. Battles were tough, which comes naturally with the format. Two drivers face off in a normal drift battle but with only one lead and one chase. The winner of that battle can then choose whether or not they want to lead or chase their next opponent, giving them a big advantage.

The competition was close all night with there being multiple people looking to win the crown. A big shout out to Colton Johnson who looked killer all night and won more battles than I could honestly count. He was consistent, smooth, and held a fantastic line all night.
Unfortunately, he did not go on to win, but the crown did eventually go to Chris Rios in his Nissan 350z. Chris is fresh off a third place at the OKC Battle Royale where he fought hard in the rain, just like this competition. Chris dominated the other drivers to bring home

the crown, cash, and the bragging rights until Black Friday. Sunday instead is quite similar to Friday per seat time. Instead of setting up, everyone is tearing down their tents, rigs, and packing away their cars. While most drivers are still shredding, a lot start their journey home
after a very long and tough weekend. All in all, a weekend which saw a lot of great driving, good times with friends, and friendly competition. That’s what drifting is all about, driving hard and having a good time. After all, if it wasn’t fun, why do it? 29

Chris has been driving for 4 years, 2 of those being competitive in Perth Western Australia. His driving style is heavily influenced by the aggressive nature of driving from the Kansai region in Japan. He owns two competitive cars, his other build being an LS swapped 180sx. Chirs also owns and runs a brand that inspires people to chase their passion rather than to succumb to societal conditioning.

ENGINE BUILDING WITH
Story by Adam Golen
Photos by John Hamilton
“TO GET WHERE WE’RE GOING, WE MUST FIRST START FROM THE BEGINNING.”
Realistically, I have no idea
the origin of that quote but for whatever reason it seemed appropriate. My name is Adam Golen and for those who don’t know me, may know the shop I have spent the majority of my adult working life at, Golen Engine. I know what you are thinking already, “Cool, this is the owner writing this.” I would love to take the credit, but I cannot. That responsibility belongs to my cousin, Chad Golen. What you do have instead is me, the Engine Builder. I spent my college years at Motorcycle Mechanics Institute in Orlando, FL returning home late summer of 2006. I spent countless weeks looking for a job. Every shop replied the same, “sorry kid, this is the time of year we are looking to start cutting back.”
At 21 years old, I was eager to start my passion and was totally crushed. To make an income, My father found me a job as a wheel delivery driverbut I hated it and was absolutely depressed. As chance would have it, early October 2006 I was making a delivery in Hudson, NH and remembered that my cousin’s engine shop was in the same town.
40
Issue 4.indd 42
4/11/2021 8:03:22 PM
@golenengines Slowly over the next 6 months, I was taught how to assemble cylinder heads and proper torque specs and sequences. In April 2007, I was promoted to full time and since Mid-Late 2009 have been the head Engine builder at Golen Engine ever since.“Ok Adam, but what about LS engines and drifting?” Fast forward to 2013ish, (Confirmed by Ant over at Enjuku Racing) Alec Hohnadell was coming into Pro Am and needed an engine.
I did a quick search, found the address and decided to stop in. I had no intentions of seeing if help was wanted, but once I entered the shop, I just had to ask. I went on and on - “I’ll strip engines, sweep the floors, take out the trash - I’ll even wash your truck! Please, is there anything I can do? I really need a job.” On the spot he says “Ok - you want to make $20 right now? Take out the trash.” Beer money was secured for the evening. A few days later, I started as a part time employee, mainly working as an Engine Builders Assistant. I was the guy who retrieved parts, did the final washes of parts and blocks, and prepped oil pans and timing covers. 41

ADAM GOLEN @adamwgolen
Ant did some research on other shops out there but after having a conversation with Golen Engine, ultimately decided that we were the go to guys. At this time we were pretty heavy into LS builds but really didn’t have our foot into the drifting door. After Hohnadell’s 416ci NA LS3, we built a 408ci supercharged LQ9 for Pat Goodin, Nate Hamilton’s 402ci NA LS2 as well as his 427ci Turbo LSX, and how could we forget, Hohnadell’s Supercharged 427ci Pro1 LS. Even though those stubborn JDM purists over at Enjuku don’t dabble too much in the LS world at the moment, we will forever be grateful for their support and friendship over the years!!
With all of the input from customers like Enjuku Racing, The Hohnadell’s, and our 2020-present sponsored driver, Nate Hamilton, we have been able to perfect our procedures, pinpoint trusted components, and even predict problem areas that maybe the average drifter would have gone through and would like to avoid. And that folks, is the real reason I am here. I have been offered the opportunity to give back to the drifting community. I am able to give you guys some insight on things we have spent countless hours learning. If you can’t wait for my next installment, which will be all tech, feel free to reach out to me on instagram @adamwgolen. Until then, Horsepower has called and I must answer.
-Adam

RYAN DEERING Story by Elliot Breheny
Photos by Chase Wesley
Ryan’s passion for drifting can be easily seen a mile away. When he isn’t working, he is either at the track or on his sim rig honing his skills. After finding out about Drifting in 2014, he was hooked. Initially, he chose to focus on himself and his personal goals. Going through college and settling himself in a stable career. All through that time, he had the urge to go drifting, but work and personal relationships hindered him from doing so. Ryan explained that going through a particularly tough relationship is what triggered him to finally hit the track. “She liberated me in a way and set me free.” Ryan’s drift machine and daily is 2014 Scion FR-S. It has minimal modifications but enough to get the car sideways around the skid pad here at OSW. @RYEVDEE 46

DRIVER’S SPOTLIGHT
The engine is stock, apart from a uniquely designed Ace equal length header. For his suspension setup, he runs Tein coil overs and Megan Racing tie rods. On the interior, things are kept simple again with a drift button for the emergency brake and IRP short shifter. Outside of the car Ryan has 16” Enkei RPF1’s on all four corners. Being that so many drivers at OSW have 350z’s, I asked him why an FR-S? He stated that his brother owned one, but the main reason was the heritage and the natural driving characteristics of the car.
True to the original 86, the FR-S is a low power and full commitment car. After being recently promoted to B class, Ryan has a good feel on what it’s like to be a newer drifter. His first event was hard for him because he didn’t have a good handle on pacing himself; he just wanted to go fast. But don’t we all? With the help of some fellow drifters giving him advice on how to improve his driving and car setup, he felt comfortable and accomplished after that first event.

STEVE BERGSTROM If you walk around the pit during a drift event at OSW, you’ll see a mixture of people from different backgrounds. Many people came to drifting after doing extreme sports or just another kind of motorsport; drifting has a specific allure. The car is doing the exact thing you’re taught not to do in traditional racing. For Steve, moving to drifting was the best thing he could have done. Going back to the days of CFRC in Orlando, Steve remembers going to those events and being drawn by the spectacle. Having little resources, he put it in the back of his mind as something he couldn’t ever afford to do
Story by Elliot Breheny Photos by Joeanthony Gallardo
After being in the car scene long enough, he started to get involved in some grip racing and building serious cars. The excitement of grip racing quickly wore off and the same time, Steve began building a LS swapped Mazda Miata. Although this was more of a streetcar, it was his first car he brought to a learner’s day at OSW. Quickly realizing that car wasn’t built for drifting, he had his sights on a new build. A drift specific car setup that would work for these events. In 2019 he drove his first event in his 350z. With the help of his friends and fellow drivers he moved into B class very quickly. Then, in 2020, OSW held their class
52 Issue 4.indd 54

qualifier where Steve was promoted to the much-coveted A class. Since then, he has been consistently progressing and becoming one of the top drivers at the track. All the while he has been building that same 350z to what it is today. There aren’t big dreams in the near future, but Steve does want to get his feet wet with competition soon. For now, he will continue shredding at OSW and other tracks. Steve currently drives a modified 2007 Nissan 350z. Some would affectionally call it an “OSW special.” In reality, the car has a series of modifications that he found that works for him. Engine tuned by RS Enthalpy, full roll cage, Hydraulic hand brake, BC coil overs, Wise Fab suspension, and a Bell Raceworks rear grip kit. For the 2021 season, Steve is sponsored by Tire Streets and Accelera tires. He has actually been running them since he started drifting in 2019 and considers them one of the best tires on the market currently. I asked Steve about the classification of drivers at OSW. There is a lot of talk of what A class drivers should or shouldn’t be. Whether drivers should be promoted or even some be demoted.
He mentioned the differences in A class are more complex than some people think. “There’s even a beyond A class- I don’t want to make a division but there definitely different levels. I honestly feel like there’s an A plus class the drivers who can go out there with any car with their eyes closed and shred.” When asked about the minimum that is expected to from an A class driver, he said that running a consistent and solid lead run and an active chase are a must have from an A class driver. Ultimately, he believes there is a gray area when it comes to skill level but as long as you’re driving consistent and safe that’s what is important.
