Editor’s Note: Hope to See You at Our Meeting We had a successful year, ICD organizes events including, evening with exchange student, luncheon and breakfast at Hinman. Our last newsletter won a award for best publication , something I am humbled to receive and share with all of us. Your active participation and involvement made it possible. We look forward to inducting new fellows at ADA meeting in Atlanta. I hope I see some of you at the meeting.

Welcome Roy McDonald, Georgia Deputy District 5 welcomes Dr. Roy McDonald as our Georgia Deputy Regent. Dr. McDonald is a native Atlantan . He completed his undergraduate studies at Emory University, graduating with a degree in Chemistry. In 1983 he earned his D.D.S. degree from Emory University School of Dentistry. He has practiced general dentistry in the North Fulton area since that time.

Dr. McDonald has been involved with organized dentistry most of his career. He is an honorable fellow of the Georgia Dental Association as well as a delegate. He is a Past President of the Northern District Dental Society. He is a member of The Georgia Academy of Dental Practice and The Atlanta Dental Study Group. Other professional fellowships include The International College of Dentist and The American College of Dentist. He currently is the Vice President of the Hinman Dental Society and The State Peer Review Chairman for the Georgia Dental Association.

Academically he has earned a Mastership in The Academy of General Dentistry.

Dr. McDonald is married to Debbie, his high school sweetheart, for 38 years. They have one son and two grandchildren. District 5 is looking forward to his knowledge and contributions in the future.

ADA President Elect Dr. Joe Crowley and Congressman Dr. Drew Ferguson Address Members ICD/ ACD/ PFA luncheon was held at GDA annual meeting at Amelia Island. It was a successful event. ADA president Elect Dr. Joe Crowley and congressman Dr. Drew Ferguson attended the luncheon. Fellows had an opportunity to interact and ask them questions on range of issues from health care bill to government policies in general.

Deputy Regent’s Report: Alabama Bruce E. Cunningham, DMD The meeting of 27 Alabama fellows was called to order by Deputy Regent Bruce Cunningham. The minutes of the Feb. 6, 2016 meeting were approved as written. Treasurer, Leigh Anne Nevins, reported a checking account balance as of May 31, 2016 to be $11,816.82. Currently we have 80 members.

Those present were encouraged to recruit potential fellows.

Future convocations, the next being in Denver on Oct. 21st, and the fellowship process were highlighted.

Leadership Coordinator, Steve Filler, announced that Janet Kim received our Student Leadership Award and Murphy Maddox our new Student Humanitarian Award. In Feb., Jennifer Davis told attendees at an International Club luncheon about the ICD. Activities of the International Club were told as well as plans for the upcoming international student exchange.

Mike Reddy told about plans being developed to have a relationship with a clinic in Peru, allowing dental students an international volunteer venue. Hiram Johnson suggested that ICD fellows may want to donate to the clinic.

Deborah Bishop suggested that the ICD/ACD seek a better time than early Saturday morning to meet at the Gulf

Coast Dental Conference. Dentists who have not volunteered to do Peace Corps exams were encouraged to volunteer.

There being no other business, the meeting was adjourned to a joint breakfast with the Alabama ACD.

Deputy Regent’s Report: Georgia Roy McDonald, DDS

I

am honored to represent the Georgia Chapter of the International College of Dentist as your Deputy Regent.

I appreciate the support and mentoring from our past Regents, Dr. Brad Greenway and Dr. Stu Loos. The foundation of excellence set by them as well as Paul Isler and Bruce Ashendorf makes this position rewarding.

Pool in my back yard catered by The Varsity. They were well taken care of. Many thanks to Marie Schweinebraten, Chris McFarland, Janine Bethea and Carol Wolff for making the Student Exchange program beneficial for all.

Georgia’s ICD Chapter hosted the joint breakfast with the American College of Dentist and the Pierre Fauchard Academy during the 2016 Thomas P Hinman Dental Meeting.

Georgia Dental Association President Tom Broderick was our featured speaker. He gave a very insightful talk on the workings of the GDA. Pertinent information and quality discussions ensued. We were also privileged to present a check to Dean Carol Lefebvre and Dean Carol Hanes for The Dental College of Georgia Dean’s Fund.

ICD Georgia Reagent, Bruce Ashendorf, introduced the speaker at this year’s White Coat ceremony at the College Of Dentistry in Augusta held on Friday July 22. The White Coat ceremony symbolizes a rising sophomore’s transition onto clinical studies. 84 students received their white coats.

As always I encourage you to nominate a deserving colleague for fellowship in the College. The streamlined nominating process can be accessed on the ICD website. Please do so to keep our chapter strong.

In June, Janine Bethea and I travelled to The Dental College of Georgia in Augusta to participate in the ICD hosted Leadership Award Luncheon. We presented two $1,000 awards to deserving students Michael Hall Jr. and Abby Halpern, daughter of ICD member Stan Halpern. A third additional $1,000 award was presented to faculty member Alan Furness DDS. In July two Dental Exchange students visited from Nice France. Ludovica Giuliani and Nicolas Bonnett had a tremendous time in the US. They visited at the Dental School in Augusta and then stayed with Atlanta hosts prior to going to Birmingham. While in Atlanta they enjoyed local cafeterias, Krispy Kreme, Waffle House, The Georgia Aquarium and a Braves game. They also played golf and went to a shooting range. Their Atlanta week ended with a Party by The

The Pool Party and other activities with French exchange students, Nicolas Bonnet and Ludovica Giuliani.

French Student Exchange: Summer 2016

Last July the Georgia and Alabama Chapters of ICD hosted two dental students from the University of Nice, Ludovica Giuliani and Nicolas Bonnet Both had completed their third year of dental school, which in French schools means that the majority of their academic studies have been completed and they will begin in the clinic in the fall. Nicolas is an avid golfer, competing at the national junior level in France, so a trip to Augusta, even though he could not golf, was exciting for him. Ludovica, although residing near Monaco with her parents, was born in Rome and is bilingual. She had never been to the United States and was anxious to improve her English.

The first week was spent in Augusta at the dental school, where the French students spent time in the clinics as well as socializing with students and faculty. Ludovica and Nico, as well as others who have visited, are always impressed with the friendliness and interest people show them during their visit. Many thanks to Jackson Griffith and his wife who hosted the visitors. Others involved included students Trent Collett, Brent Johnson, and Jenny Jung. Dr. Frank Tay and his administrative assistant, Marie Churchville, as well as Dr. Carole Hanes hosted Ludovica and Nico at the school.

The following week Ludovica and Nico spend the week in Atlanta hosted by Dr. Roy McDonald, Drs. Chris McFarland and Marie Schweinebraten, Dr. Carol Wolf, and Dr. Janine Bethea. The students always enjoy visiting dental offices and spending the day exposed to the profession in the United States. Of course the side trips to tourist attractions are also part of the experience, with a Braves’ game, the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coca Cola always being big hits. Shopping was on Ludovica’s list and playing golf at various courses topped Nico’s.

The week ended with a party at Dr. Roy McDonald’s for members to meet the students and get a true taste of Atlanta by having “The Varsity” cater it. Over 30 ICD members and spouses attended. Ludovica and Nico left Atlanta for Birmingham experiencing the true flavor of the South.
