FROM THE DESK OF THE DEPUTY REGENT JAMES W. TANEYHILL: A Call to Action: Over the last five years I have attempted in increase activity of the ICD Maryland in an effort to harness the tremendous trove of resources that we possess both in professionally and financially.

We have added a UMSOD study club, a community outreach at Baltimore Station and, hopefully, an international program. Many thanks to all who of you who have stepped up to help. It takes serious effort to keep these programs rolling. A special thank you to Joanne Block Reif and Eric Katkow for all of their help over the past years.

But, I believe that our chapter can do even more! If you have an idea for a project which could utilize ICD Maryland manpower or financial support, please let me know. We have money languishing in our saving a count. USA-ICD also has a rather robust grant program.

Resources are available. All that is really needed is the energy to pursue them.

A Word about Membership: This past year we welcomed three new fellows. Several more were approved but chose not to make the trip to Hawaii. So far ,I have screened two excellent candidates for membership this year ,but, I need you to help me out here. It is time for you to pay it forward by nominating a candidate just as you were nominated. The process could hardly be easier. Go the USA-ICD candidate tab on the web site, write me a note as to why your nominee should be selected and then, after I approve, talk to your nominee about membership. If interested, he/she then fills out In This Issue: the Candidate Information Form while you find a muFrom the Desk of the Deputy Regent tual colleague to write a supporting letter. That's it.

We all know worthy candidates. Do just one of them New Maryland Fellows a big favor this year.

In Fellowship, Jim Taneyhill New Maryland Fellows of the ICD Fellow Vanessa Benavent Anderson is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orofacial Pain, a Fellow in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). She graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD), pursued a General Practice Residency at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Baltimore and upon completion of a twoyear program in Orofacial Pain at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (now known as Rutgers), earned an M.S.D. degree. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at UMSOD, has a private practice limited to orofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, and served as Clinical Director of the UMSOD Brotman Orofacial Pain Clinic. She is on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Orofacial Pain, served as a member of the Council of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain, and is a contributing textbook author of the AAOP “Orofacial Pain: Guidelines for Assessment, Diagnosis, and Management.” She is a member of the American Dental Association (ADA), Howard County Dental Association (HCDA), and served as the 2017-2018 President of the Maryland State Dental Association (MSDA). She has also been honored as one of the ADA 2017 “Top 10 Dentists Under 10 Years” Awardees.

Fellow Ali Behnia earned his B.S. degree (cum laude) in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University and his M.S. degree in Oral Biology at the University of Maryland. He attained his specialty certificate in Endodontics, upon graduating from the University of Pennsylvania Dental School with honors. He has published and lectured extensively, both nationally and internationally. He is an active member of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE), American Dental Association (ADA), American Society of Forensic Odontology (ASFO), American Association of Dental Boards (AADB), and the Commission on Dental Competency Assessments (CDCA). He is a board member appointee to the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners for a second term. He is currently serving on the Dental Board as the Parliamentarian. He also currently serves on the AAE Board of Directors as District I Director and as the Past President of The Alumni Association of the UMSOD. He serves as a Forensic Odontologist (consultant) for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore. Prior to opening his private practice, He was an Assistant Professor and Director of Pre-doctoral Endodontics for four years in the Department of Endodontics at UMSOD. He is currently a Part-time Clinical

Assistant Professor (Dean's Faculty) at the Department of Advanced Oral Sciences and Therapeutics, Division of Endodontics, UMSOD. He was recognized as a Top Dentist (Endodontist) by the Washingtonian Magazine in 2009, 2015, and 2017.

Fellow Nisha Ganesh earned her D.D.S. degree at UMSOD, followed by a two-year certificate program in Advanced Education in General Dentistry. After working part-time in private practice, she committed to a full-time role as a General Practice Manager at UMSOD. Her duties included mentoring third and fourth year dental students during their clinical training and tracking their academic progress through the clinical portion of the curriculum. This academic/clinical experience served her well during her five-year appointment East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine, where she fulfilled the role of Group Leader and Director of Predoctoral Clinical Education. She rejoined the UMSOD faculty in November of 2017, as Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Predoctoral Education in General Dentistry. She is currently completing an M.A. degree program in adult education through the College of Education at ECU. Her goals include working collaboratively with the faculty and staff of the UMSOD to enhance the comprehensive learning and education of the dental students, in turn facilitating quality patient care.

2018 Student Awards George B. Clendenin Award: The George B. Clendenin Award is presented each Fall to that second-year student at the UMSOD who at the completion of the Freshman year has attained the highest combined academic average. There is a stipend that accompanies this award. The award winner this year is Christopher Hackett. The award was presented in a ceremony at the UMSOD by Vice-Regent Jim Taneyhill and Fellow Mark Reynolds, Dean of the School.

ICD Student Leadership Award: For the past 47 years, the ICD Section I (U.S.A.), currently with additional support from the Procter and Gamble Corporation, has awarded the Student Leadership Award in each of the Dental Schools within our Section. It recognizes the Fourth-Year Dental Student, selected by the Dental School faculty, who has demonstrated Leadership in the following activities: •

As shown in the accompanying picture, Fellows Edwin Morris, District 4 Regent and Jim Taneyhill, Vice-Regent for Maryland, presented the 2018 award in a ceremony at the UMSOD to Ekpa Eyoma.

ICD Student Humanitarian Award: Annually, the UMSOD student recognized by the faculty for the most devoted participation in community humanitarian activities is presented with this award from the Maryland Chapter of the ICD. The awardee for 2018 is Jennifer Kim. The plaque was presented by Regent Edwin Morris and Vice-Regent Jim Taneyhill in a ceremony at UMSOD as seen in the photograph on the next page.

DINNER MEETINGS Our Annual Business Meeting was held on November 15 at Tersiguel's Restaurant in Ellicott City. Unfortunately, a freak snow storm limited attendance from the Northern areas but twenty souls were able to make it for a wonderful dinner and fellowship. We were able to recognize our Clendenin Award winner, Chris Hackett, hear a presentation about Baltimore Station from Volunteer Director, Todd Troesler, and listen to Kate Noonan describe the dental School’s organizational effort to establish the Student Global Health Initiative.

One interesting feature of the meeting was a chance to greet new-to-Maryland Fellows Don Worm and Doug Risk. Don recently retired from the Navy and Doug from the Air Force. I learned that after retirement the new retiree is kicked out of his ICD service component and must find another home. We welcome both Don and Doug and we look forward to your future participation.

Many thanks to Fellow Sheldon Seidel for arranging this event. About three years ago, Sheldon step up and volunteered to handle our meeting arrangements. This is never an easy job and I would like to personally and publicly express my appreciation to him for making my life just a little less stressful and for making our meetings significantly more enjoyable. Thank you, Shelly.

The Annual ACD-ICD Meeting will be held again this Spring on Thursday, April 18. This will allow Senior Dental Students to attend in the midst of their busy schedules, prior to the April 25 ADEX exam and other clinical practice days. Details of time and location will follow separately. We, ICD-Maryland, are charged with hosting the meeting this year. Shelly Seidel is again hard at work to identify a suitable venue.

Current Projects:

The UMSOD Practice Management Study Club: The Practice Management Study Club continues to thrive after the graduation of its founding three members this past June. The chairmanship has been past to junior student, Kate Pawlak. She is assisted by fellow juniors, Ryan Shargel and Sufi Cha. The club, under the able mentorship of Fellow Joanne Block Reif, is planning four meetings this year. Joanne has been instrumental in guiding this extracurricular effort in that it is the only avenue available for students to gain any insight into the business side of dentistry. Great job, Joanne.

If there is an associated practice area, be it staffing, overhead control, insurance, scheduling or any other topic associated with Practice Management where you feel that you could make a contribution, please let Joanne know. The UMSOD Ethics Seminars: Again this year ICD Maryland Fellows are invited to participate as mentors and discussion leaders for the Ethics Seminars for junior year students at the dental school. We participate in partnership with the ACD Maryland Chapter.

These seminars are conducted on Tuesday mornings, February 19 and 25, and March 5,12 and 26. There may still be time to volunteer. Clinical case studies are provided to volunteers a few days in advance.

A brief discussion among the mentoring Fellows begins each morning so that even more relevant experience and perspective can be passed on to the discussion classes. In the past, lunch has been provided. All who have participated in the past have unanimously felt that their time was well spent. Student interaction in a setting outside the clinic offers an unusual opportunity for us to influence how some future dentists may act when the inevitable ethical crisis arises.

Baltimore Station Baltimore Station is a shelter located in the shadow of M&T stadium. It predominantly houses homeless veterans. Their capacity is about 140 men sleeping in two locations. They offer many services to help these men return to a more stable life. As Todd Troester, the Volunteer director, pointed out during his presentation at our annual meeting in November, dental care is a very big need for most of them; however, very few qualify for care from the Department of

Veterans Affairs. Our Deputy Regent felt that this would be an ideal opportunity for us to be directly involved in the community doing what we do best, helping people in need. When approached, the leadership at Baltimore Station was very enthusiastic about the opportunity for their vets to be treated by our local ICD Fellows. To date, about 10 vets have been seen by our Fellows.

As currently organized, Fellow Taneyhill stops at the Baltimore Station to screen those vets who would like to receive care. He then assigns them to one of our Fellows for treatment.

The vet and his case manager make an appointment. The expectation is that the vet would receive the basic care required to be returned to dental health, extractions, fillings and basic removable denture. Unfortunately, the program is currently constrained by location when assigning the vets to our Fellows so that nearly all have been in the Baltimore metro area.

Transportation has been the biggest challenge but that may be resolved by using Uber.

This program took a while to get off the ground, but it appears to be on a good footing now.

Many thanks to our dozen of our Fellows who have stepped up. Hopefully, we can continue to see this program flourish. Furthermore, there may be other opportunities around the State for similar programs. It might be worthwhile to inquire whether there are other similar shelters for veterans in your area. Student Global Health Initiative Back in the Fall, USA Section of the ICD queried the University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) concerning a $500 grant that the School received to initiate an international student outreach program. Some may remember the work of ICD Fellow Mike Belenky to establish an extensive student exchange program with several other foreign dental schools prior to his death.

Deputy Regent Taneyhill has been in contact with Dr. Kate Noonan, Senior Director of Special Projects for the Dean of UMSOD. The initial concept involved establishing an intramural study club for those students who are interested in volunteering for an offshore clinical experience. Our Maryland ICD Chapter would then identify available trips and fund the airfare for those students who are selected. Fellow Taneyhill will be meeting with Dr. Noonan in the next few weeks to establish the framework for this new program.

She has said that there is considerable interest among the students for this initiative.

In order to implement this program, the information that is needed now is for any of you who currently participate in offshore project to contact Fellow Taneyhill. He is aware that not only he, but many of you go to the Caribbean or Central America to volunteer. The ICD Maryland Chapter would like to pay for a dental student to go with you the next time. Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award Goes to Fellow Leslie E. Grant: The Lucy Hobbs Taylor Award is the highest honor given by the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) This award is presented to a member who exemplifies a true professional with accomplishment in one or more areas of dentistry, organized dentistry, academia, government, anthropology, archeology, philanthropy and consulting. With at least 10 years membership in AAWD and a career as a licensed dentist for 20 years or more, the recipient demonstrates a record of mentoring women dentists and/or service to organizations that further the cause of women in dentistry. The award was presented to Fellow Leslie Grant at the October 6 97th Annual Conference of the AAWD in Savannah, GA. As outlined in the award ceremony, Dr. Leslie E. Grant earned her B.S. degree (cum laude), at Boston University and her Master of Speech Pathology and Audiology degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. She then earned her D.D.S. degree at UMSOD and completed a General Practice Residency at Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson, New Jersey. She has practiced in Baltimore City for more than 20 years. Most recently, she worked for the Maryland State Board of Dental Examiners as the Chief Dental Officer.

Dr. Grant participates in many professional dental affiliations. She served on the Board of Directors of the Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention and currently serves on the Boards of the Dr. Edward B. Shils Entrepreneurial Fund, Baltimore County League of Women Voters, and Oral Health America. In 2015, she was named as one of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women” by the Maryland Daily Record, and in 2006 she was named as one the “One Hundred Most Influential African Americans” by Ebony magazine. She is a member of the National Dental Association, the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Association of Women Dentists, the American Dental Association and the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association. She is a Fellow in both the American and the International College of Dentists. She served as Secretary of the Maryland Dental Society for six years and as a delegate for six years. Dr. Grants’ NDA activities include serving on the Reference Committee, Chairing the Committee on Constitution and By-Laws and serving as Speaker of the House for five years. She was the President of the National Dental Association in 2006, and served as Legislative Chair (2007-2012). In mid-February 2019, she hosted the third annual Leadership Retreat of student recipients of scholarships.

She then traveled to participate as a speaker at the Lingnan University in Hong Kong as part of their TEDx program on the theme of “Dauntless.” TED is the acronym for Technology, Entertainment and Design. The full presentation will be available soon on You Tube.

Milestones: Longevity Awards: Six Fellows achieved longevity milestones in the past year. A very impressive list. They were recognized at our annual meeting in November.

Congratulations and thank you for your service not just to the ICD but also to our profession.

In Memoriam: Fellow Don Tilghman passed away unexpectedly this past Fall. Don was a larger-than-life force in the Dental community not just on the Eastern Shore but throughout Maryland. He taught many of us who attended UMSOD, was prominent in organized Dentistry and in continuing education. Don worked right up until the time of his death. He will be missed. May he rest in peace.
