Dr. Francis G. Serio, FICD, Greenville, N.C. (above), received the University of Maryland School of Dentistry Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award June 8, 2018. He received both his certificate in periodontics and Masters degree from the University. Also, Dr. Serio was Chair of the ADA Foundation International Volunteer Project Workshop in Chicago on May 11, 2018. To see a video presentation of this landmark event, click here.

“I have been honored these last four years to serve as your Regent and meet ICD Fellows from our states.”

The ICD USA 2018 Hawaii Convocation and Luau are only a few weeks away. Your Sixteenth District will present an impressive slate of outstanding candidates for Fellowship induction from all three states.

We’d like to acknowledge Dr. Felicia Goins, a pediatric dentist, who is the Deputy Regent for South Carolina. She is leading the charge to revitalize the ICD presence across the state and within the dental school at the Medical University of South Carolina for our student initiatives.

Drs. Scott Eidson and Eve Brown together have identified many deserving North Carolina colleagues and have worked with the dental schools at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and East Carolina University. Virginia has excelled under the stewardship of Dr. Richard Roadcap who has personalized the ICD interaction with Fellows across the state and at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

The 2019 ICD USA meeting will be in San Francisco in September which is a departure from our usual October schedule. In October 2020, ICD USA will be in Orlando and the World-Wide Centennial Celebration in Nagoya, Japan in November. The Japan meeting will showcase each ICD Section across the globe which will highlight the unique International honor of being an ICD Fellow.

ence in Japan to celebrate the conception of ICD by American dental educator, Dr. Louis Ottofy, and his Japanese colleague, Dr. Tsurukichi Okumura, in Tokyo, Japan in 1920.

Many Fellows are already planning pre- and post-meeting travel so place this outstanding event on your calendar. Stay current with ICD happenings world-wide by reading The Globe which is sent to you electronically. The 2018 Globe included two videos so be sure to check this out. This publication, your ICD USA Key, and each website will keep you abreast of all opportunities.

I have been honored these last four years to serve as your Regent and to meet ICD Fellows from our states. In January Dr. Mark Crabtree from Virginia will have the distinction to serve you as the Sixteenth District Regent. Remember to consider honoring your outstanding colleagues with ICD Fellowshipwe are already planning for 2019!

On April 3, 2018, ICD Regent Dr. Bettie McKaig presented the Student Leadership Award to Korry Tauber, and the Student Humanitarian Award to Catherine Schricker. Following his presentation at the International Congress of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery held in Marrakesh, Morocco in April, Dr. Daniel M. Laskin, FICD, Richmond, Va., toured the country by way of traditional Moroccan transportation.

Dr. Bettie McKaig, District 16 ICD Regent, presented a check to the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry April 10, 2018, for support of the ICD’s International Student Experience Program. The funds from the USA Section and the USA Section Foundation help defray the costs of the Global Education Mission.
