New Inductee and Editor

Dr. Amir Kazim discussing the future of ICD with veterans

Dr. Steve Chan and Dr. Donna Klauser

While being honored as part of the 2022 class of Inductees to the College, I was fortunate to make the acquaintanceship of the esteemed Dr Nader Nadershahi, Dean of University of the Pacific, Dugoni School of Dentistry. Most memorably, he imparted one of his personal favorite quotes from Isaac Newton in that, “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” From this sentiment, it is clear that I am standing taller than the CN Tower (as an aside, I was born in Toronto, Canada).

Having just under a decade of experience in my dental journey, I was fortunate to be nominated by Dr Donna Klauser for this auspicious honor of being a member of the ICD. While at the Convocation, I was fortunate to have met and continued to chat with the esteemed Dr. Steven Chan who told me that even as I progress through my career, I should continually seek mentors. “As you move through your career, you’ll find people whom you intuitively feel you can confide in - and share tough questionsand some where you’re not even sure how to frame the questions ahead. Reach out. There often is no one singular person with the experiences you seek.”

Of course, this is no substitute for hard work as when I had the chance to talk to Dr. Bruce Valentine on what is the best advice for a “newer” dentist, he replied that I should, “…become the CEO of your practice. Invest in CE and read as many business articles, so that when you hire experts to help you run, develop and grow a dental career, you are nearly as knowledgeable as they are. Your experts may know the details but no one knows the big picture better than you!”

Clearly – I still have a lot more learning to do, but with Fellows as exemplarily as these two – how can I go wrong?

“Better-Know-A-Member”

Dr. Wallace Bellamy

Dr. Wallace Bellamy of Elk Grove, California is the 2022 recipient of the national Outstanding Sponsor Award. This award is presented annually to the ICD non-board Fellow who sponsors the greatest number of Candidates inducted in the USA Section in a given year. Dr. Bellamy sponsored ten C andidates – one from New York, one from Virginia and eight from California. Why take on such a noble endeavor to nominate so many? In his own words, “Service and leadership [are] what ICD entails. It is this service that sets ICD members apart. When we serve, we look outside ourselves and our own problems to bring value and dignity to others selflessly.”

Born in Queens, New York and as the child of a career Air Force professional, he has lived all over the world including New York, Texas, Europe, and California. He graduated from Boston University School of Dentistry in 1989 and has been in private practice since 1993. Dr. Bellamy feels that dentistry is an important part of a person’s overall health. Not only does it help improve the aesthetics of smiles but can improve people’s lives.

In serving the community through his profession, Dr. Bellamy has taken leadership roles in many dental associations over the years. Some of his most important work has been as President of the Sacramento District Dental Society (2016), Vice Chairman of the California Dental Association’s Leadership Development Committee (2014-present), and member of the Sacramento District Dental Society Ethics Committee. Even with all these accolades, Dr Bellamy continues to, “ see nothing but a bright future for dentistry - especially in the integrated medical model, new and exciting technology and more access to care for those without means.” In his spare time, Dr. Bellamy enjoys traveling, riding horses, skiing, and most important of all, spending time with his three daughters.

Initial Thoughts by a New Editor

It will be no small task to take on the torch from my esteemed predecessor Dr. Donna B Hurowitz, but I promise to do my part and serve my fellow ICD Fellows- keeping everyone up to date with the events of our District XII.

Looking forward to seeing you all in Orlando in October!

Post-Covid Volunteerism – A Call to Action

The year 2020 made everyone in the world rethink and reshape how business was done. From the fledging senior dental student still hoping and praying that they have an adequate path of draw to the lead dentist of several state-ofthe-art offices, we all have had to learn how to change and adapt to the new environment. We, as dentists, are the leaders in this aspect as adaptability is certainly our middle name as we have to adapt to literally whomever walks through our door!

With the change and adaptability in mind – District XIII wants to hear from YOU! How can we help you honor the ICD mission of having the opportunity to help serve others? We are looking for individuals willing to serve on a member engagement committee to explore ideas for member involvement that could include such ideas as luncheons, happy hours, or volunteer opportunities in the US or abroad including possible coordination with other service groups. Email the Regent (cyarborough@pacific.edu) or Deputy Regents to express interest
