BODY OF CHRIST COMMUNITY DENTAL CLINIC GRANT REPORT REQUIREMENTS Submission Deadline: Within one (1) year of grant award date I.

Description and documentation of grant expenditure — Please document how the$500 grant was spent.

The $500 grant money was a very much needed addition to our supply budget for 2019.

It was used to purchase supplies (composite material, burrs, bond agent, anesthetic carpules, needles, gloves, etc.).

Please provide a short narrative of project summary.

Body of Christ Community Clinic is a not-for-profit charity clinic that provides free dental care to the residents in East Bell County. Residents are living below 200% federal poverty levels and have no resource for dental care. There is no charge for services.

III.

Evaluation of Project —Please describe how the project was a success. Include all outcome measures such as economic impact, numbers of persons served, etc.

Body of Christ Community Dental Clinic saw 953 patients this year for a total of 1055 patient visits. Value of services provided is almost $600,000. Some of these patients have never been to a dentist.

Patient Story: “For as long as I can remember I've had reasons to smile, but the inability to do so. My faith, my family and my love were all affected. Not having the ability to smile for these reasons has been hard. The embarrassing moments, the constant pain, trying to work around people, smile, eat or even talk are just some of the challenges.

It’s been a struggle to have the strength and to keep my faith. In Psalm 34:17it says "When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears, and rescues them from all their troubles.”

To say that the Body of Christ Clinic has been a blessing, is the understatement of the year. They were an answer to a prayer that I've had for a long time. The dentists I worked with understood the fears that I had and comforted me.”

Kenneth Marquardt, DDS: After 11 years of private practice and subsequently serving in the military for 20 years, the Body of Christ Community Dental Clinic is my third venue as a general dentist. The patients that we treat at Body of Christ are quite different than the healthy military members I have treated while serving my country. Many of the patients I see have high blood pressure, diabetes and a plethora of other medical conditions which are being treated by a long list of prescription medications. Unlike the military population who see the dentist regularly, by the time the patients at Body of Christ come in to see us for treatment their dental health is very compromised. This is in large part because of their

previous inability to receive dental care mostly due to financial constraints of the past.

However, this situation affords us a tremendous opportunity to educate them in how they can care for their oral health.

Through the support of the local community, Body of Christ is able to minister to their needs without the burden of finances. It is a blessing and an honor to treat the underserved of Belton and surrounding communities. There is a great need for dental care to those who would otherwise be unable to afford it and our patients are incredibly grateful for the services we provide...praise God for His goodness. Even though we cannot offer comprehensive dentistry because our own financial constraints, we do provide fillings, extractions, and cleanings for the population we serve. Recently, as a result of the generosity of the organizations that support our ministry, the Lord has given us the ability to provide endodontics (root canal treatment) to our patients. This enables us to save teeth that would otherwise need to be extracted. Preserving or restoring the smiles of our patients is very important to almost everyone we treat.

Gustav Gates, DDS: Thank you for supporting the mission of the Body of Christ Community Dental Clinic with this grant. It has been an honor to serve the patients at the clinic. Although I have had to take time off because of a back injury, when I am there the patients are very appreciative of our services and almost everyone says “God bless you” at the end of the appointment. I look forward to returning to the clinic to help these patients.

CARING HANDS OF MAINE DENTAL CENTER NORTHERN MAINE DENTAL OUTREACH WEEK Awaiting Report Submission Project Overview For the past 5 years our organization, the Caring Hands of Maine Dental Center, has sponsored a student outreach week for dental students at University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine.

A group of senior dental students (4-8), in addition to at least one faculty member, have traveled to Maine to provide no cost to patient’s dental work. Over the past several years the teams have traveled to islands, rural towns, nursing homes, tribal lands, and schools. Clinics are set up in gyms, schools, nursing homes, and even a roller rink. A full range of dental services are provided and this has been excellent clinical experiences for the participants. For the past several years the teams have traveled to the northern most county of Maine, Aroostook County, to provide care to underserved populations in this very rural portion of the state. We are seeking help with clinical supplies necessary for this week long event.

Objectives To continue to provide no cost to patient care and continue to provide a service learning opportunity to the dental students participating in the program.

LOUISIANA DENTAL ASSOCIATION OPIOID AWARENESS 2020 Louisiana Dental Association Opioid Awareness 2020 Grant Report Prepared for the ICD USA Section Foundation and Henry Schein Cares Humanitarian Stimulus Grant

Name of Project: “Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) Opioid Awareness 2020” Purpose and Project Summary: The initial objective was to hold a contest for dentists’ children and dentists’ patients who are between the ages of 8 and 18 to submit artwork relative to our project. The contest theme was “Dentists in Louisiana Want to Give Opioids the Boot.”

There were two categories separating the age groups (ages 8-12 and ages 13-18). The five-person committee selected winners in each category and then selected three honorable mention pieces of artwork. The one piece of artwork with the most votes was placed on the front cover of the Summer 2019 issue of the LDA Journal and a tear out was included that dentists can frame and display in their dental offices across the state, sending the message to all our patients that LDA member dentists are unified against drug addiction.

Additionally, the artwork was turned into signage that was on display inside the Exhibit Hall of the New Orleans Dental Conference/LDA Annual Session in May 2019. Opioid Awareness 2020 committee members visited with guests as they passed the signs.

The overall art contest winner was Cameron Basinger, a 15 year old from Caddo Magnet High School in Shreveport, La. His father is a dentist and member of the LDA. LDA President (and ICD member who applied for the grant) Dr. Kristi Soileau used her term as president to speak to various dental groups and components about the ADA’s call for dental health professionals to join in the fight against opioid addiction following the bipartisan call to arms on Capitol Hill March 2018.

The contest and subsequent materials sent out to over 1,900 members via the LDA Journal, has given the LDA the opportunity to keep this issue and the national fight against opioid abuse at the forefront of their minds.

Dr. Soileau and Dr. Mark Chaney were also invited to speak to the LSU School of Dentistry Student Professionalism and Ethics Association (SPEA). SPEA in dentistry is a national, student driven association that was established to promote and support students’ lifelong commitment to ethical behavior in order to benefit the patients they serve and to further the dental profession. Dr. Soileau was able to have a nice discussion with these dental students about the opioid crisis and their responsibilities as future health care professionals.

Dr. Soileau also spoke to the University of New Orleans pre-dental society about the LDA’s opioid campaign.

What’s Next?

Dr. Soileau, along with the other committee members Drs. Troy Babb, Michael Luminais, Lance Savoie, and Francesca Velasco, will continue to serve as needed to provide information and resources to our members.

The LDA has also invited our parish coroner, Beau Clark, to present at the statewide leadership conference that will be held in Baton Rouge January 17, 2020. Invitees are state and component leadership. His topic will be “Louisiana’s Heroin Epidemic and the Overuse of Opioids” and his presentation will focus on the following: This nation is seeing its deadliest drug epidemic ever. Over the past five years, East Baton Rouge Parish has seen an alarming increase in the number of people dying from heroin and opioid overdoses which mirrors this national trend. This session will discuss why this epidemic has occurred and what some of the solutions are to overcoming this crisis, focusing on dentists as the attendees of this meeting.

Financials The LDA Journal sponsored the pages in both the Spring and Summer issues to both advertise for and include the winner’s tear out page for dentists’ offices. However, there was an additional printing charge of $300 to make the sign a tear out page.

We also spent $249.35 on the signage that was used for the New Orleans Dental Conference/LDA Annual Session and is still available to use during other presentations, such as the coroner’s presentation in January.

Additionally, we spent $475 on awards and certificates for art contest winners.

(ARMOM) Grant Report for Funds in Support of the 2019 Annual ARMOM Free Clinic held in Springdale, Arkansas A.Grant Information (description of grant received): Date Application Submitted: 7 February 2019 Dental Project: ARMOM 2019—The Arkansas Mission of Mercy, Inc., Annual Free Dental Clinic, April 26-27, 2019, held in Springdale, Arkansas Report Submitted by: Dr. Terry Fiddler, DDS, Executive Director, 3010 Collins Drive, Conway, AR 72034; Phone: 501-269-7778; Email: fiddler@tcworks.net Grant Amount Received: $500.00 Date of project: 26-27 April 2019 Other Funds and sources: $100,000.00 from Delta Dental of Arkansas, $100,000.00 from Tyson Foods; $48,438.33 from Arkansas Community Foundation Project Budget: Total Funds, $248,438.33, were expended to support the program and clinic over the two-day period in the following six budgeted expense line-items: 1) dental & medical supplies; 2) equipment rental; 3) insurance, security, legal fees; 4) contract labor & ASDA fees; 5) publicity & miscellaneous; and 6) volunteer support (meals, etc.) The ICD grant was applied to line-item one.

B. Summary of Project: Short Narrative of Program Success: The program results are easily summarized in a few statistics: 2,102 patients served with oral health treatment and care; the extended families and friends of patients provided with oral health and preventative dental care education sessions and take-home materials (estimated at approximately 1,500 to 1,800); 136 dentists and medical doctors providing dental/medical care; 239 registered dental assistants providing care; 11 pharmacists providing prescription services, 43 RNs an Lab Technicians providing lab testing services and 382 lay volunteers providing turn-key reception, processing and educational information distribution to patients, their families and friends as they departed from the free clinic.

A heart-felt moment was experienced first-hand by the Executive Director of ARMOM, Dr. Terry Fiddler, when a middle-aged woman approached him with the question, “Are you Dr. Fiddler, the leader of these Angels?” To which Dr. Fiddler responded, Yes, I am, but [jokingly] the devil has angels too!” The woman smiled broadly with a hearty laugh saying, “…look at my smile, these teeth have been made new you and your Angels! You and your associates are indeed my ‘mobile miracle workers!” The woman hugged Dr. Fiddler with a warm smile and bear-hug, saying you will never know how you have helped me in my time of need, having lost my husband recently and no with no access to dental care. ARMOM has been a salvation for me: you are my mobile miracle workers!”

Dr. Fiddler relates that this moment at ARMOM 2019 Springdale happened to be captured by the local TV station, with the crew asking the woman is she would consent to a full interview, which she did with great praise for ARMOM and its fine work in Northwest Arkansas.

The other note of success from this event is that three of the ARMOM volunteers, young students with high hopes of being accepted into dental college for next year, have all three been accepted!

RIMOM’s two-day FREE dental clinic is the signature event of the Rhode Island Oral Health Foundation. This clinic provides free dental care to the uninsured, underinsured or anyone who cannot access dental care.

The clinic will be held at the Providence Community Health Centers (PCHC) 335R Prairie Avenue in Providence, RI. Patient line opens at 5:00am clinic opens at 6:00am until capacity is reached.

Our central location will provide greater accessibility for our patients to receive the services offered at RIMOM. With its 22 operatories, this state-of-the-art dental clinic allows our dental professionals to continue to provide free dental services to up to 600 deserving patients.

At the clinic, patients will initially undergo a health and dental evaluation and then be provided with treatment on a first-come, first-served basis, based on their oral health needs.

Services include, x-rays, fillings, tooth extractions, root canal treatment on front teeth only, oral health instructions, small denture repairs and a limited number of partial dentures to replace missing front teeth. These are all provided by licensed dental professional volunteers.

The clinic is staffed with over 250 dental & medical volunteers and over 200 community volunteers who graciously give their time, talent and clinical expertise to provide dental services to deserving patients.

TEXAS MISSION OF MERCY (KERRVILLE) 77TH MISSION EVENT USA Fellows from Texas, including International President Elect Richard Smith, promoted the ICD Centennial while serving local residents in October 2019. The group participated as volunteer dental professionals at the Texas Mission of Mercy (TMOM) project tin Kerrville, Texas, which is a mobile dental clinic that delivers free basic dental services to Texans with limited resources and access to care. The two-day event provided US $257,087 worth of dental care to 387 residents.

WESTERN SLOPE 2019 COLORADO MISSION OF MERCY

The Colorado Mission of Mercy (COMOM) is a large-scale dental clinic that is held annually in a Colorado community. With 125 portable dental chairs, dental services are provided to adults, elderly, and children, who cannot afford dental care. An outpouring of nearly 200 volunteer dentists from across the state – along with hundreds of dental hygienists, assistants, lab technicians, and a myriad of lay volunteers and other health professionals – work in tandem with community groups and agencies to better the oral health of individuals who come to the clinic.

Under the leadership of Dr. James Setterberg and his wife Sherrie, COMOM dentists saw 1,484 patients and provided $1,500,000 in donated dental services!

VOLUNTEER SEMINARS Volunteer Dental Projects - What's It All About?

Presenter: Dr. Francis G. Serio Date: Saturday, April 6, 2019 Time: 8:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Location: Pennsylvania's Dental Meeting, The Gettysburg Hotel, 1 Lincoln Square You can make a difference in the lives of people around the world through volunteer projects.

Designed for dentists, dental hygienists, and other interested parties who want to learn more about the nuts and bolts of volunteering around the world or around the block. It will also be useful for those with some volunteering experience looking for new ideas, or just validation of what they are doing. Topics include the nature of volunteer activities, cross-cultural issues, comparison of service and teaching projects, how to get started either at home or abroad, and where to find these volunteer opportunities.

Educational Objectives: Identify why they are interested in volunteering understand the importance of working within the context of the local community compare and contrast the nature of teaching and service projects with the advantages and disadvantages of each type outline the steps necessary to get started including needs assessment, goal setting, and team assembly describe the nuts and bolts of volunteering including what to do and resources to support the project find volunteer projects and other sources of information appreciate existing projects, both teaching and service, in the US and overseas.

Biography: Dr. Francis G. Serio has been in dental education and clinical practice for over 38 years. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. He is currently a full-time staff dentist for Greene County Health Care, Inc. a Federally Qualified Health Center in eastern North Carolina. He served as the Interim Vice Dean and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs and was a tenured Professor at the East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine. He held tenured faculty and administrative positions at the University of Maryland and the University of Mississippi. He was inducted into the Academy of Dentistry International in 1999, the International College of Dentists in 2003, and the American College of Dentists in 2004. He has presented over 170 lectures and continuing education courses in the U.S. and around the world. He is founder and director of the Dominican Dental Mission Project. Over a span of 37 years, this project has provided in excess of $19 million of services to 63,000 of the rural poor of the Dominican Republic. In 1991, the project received The President’s Volunteer Action Award from President George H.W. Bush and in 2001, the Daily Points of Light Award from President George W. Bush. He has also been an active participant in Mission of Mercy and Remote Area Medical projects. He received the 2015 American

Dental Association Humanitarian Award and received the American Academy of Periodontology Humanitarian Award in 2004. He is the 2018 recipient of the Alumni of the Year- Distinguished Achievement Award from the University of Maryland Dental School. Dr. Serio has a wealth of experience not only in periodontics and implant dentistry but in most other phases of dentistry as well. He has written or co-authored over 40 scientific articles and four books. The most recent book, the Manual of Clinical Periodontics, was written with Dr. Charles E. (Bud) Hawley and published by Lexi-Comp (www.lexi.com) and is in its 4th edition. Dr. Serio is married to Dr. Cheryl L. Serio, a general dentist. They have two adult children.
