Greetings and salutations to everyone in District One. We are completing an excellent year in our District, culminating in the Induction of 15 new Fellows in Atlanta. We look forward to welcoming them when they return home or at the Yankee ICD luncheon in January.

Here is some of our District news: Joe Kenneally continues his tremendous commitment to ICD and will become ICD USA Section President in January, a rare Double- Double.

Christine Benoit recently completed an outstanding year as an International Counselor.

RI Deputy Regent Jeff Dodge was honored in Atlanta as the Outstanding Deputy Regent in ICD. Jeff also serves as District One Treasurer.

Kevin Norige from CT and Barry Saltz from ME are new Deputy Regents from their respective states.

We welcome them and look forward to their contributions.

Connecticut had a very successful of Mission of Mercy this spring and treated over 1000 patients over a 2 day period. RI will have their MOM in the fall.

Eliot Paisner, our fearless and intrepid Vice Regent rappelled down the wall of the tallest building in New Hampshire - all for charity!

I hope that the holiday season will bring you happiness and joy and I look forward to seeing you at the Yankee Luncheon in January.

International Council

The International College of Dentists Annual Council Meeting took place November 11 – 12, 2017 in Taipei City, Taiwan.

ICD’s partnership with the US Center for Disease Control Antibiotic Awareness Program continues to allow Fellows to learn about this critical issue. In 2015, in Europe and the US, there were 50,000 deaths due to antibiotic resistance. Ten percent of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions in the US are written by dentists. ICD President Joseph Kenneally delivered an Antibiotic Awareness presentation in Mala, South Africa in June. Other programs took place in Chengdu, China; Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam; New Delhi, India; Lancaster, Virginia; and Beirut, Lebanon. The College plans to develop an educational video on Antibiotic Awareness to disseminate information on how to best prescribe needed antibiotics. A new ICD Global Project Registry will be launched in the spring of 2018. This flagship project, years in the making, is an innovative map that will display Humanitarian, Educational, and Leadership activities by ICD Fellows worldwide. Please notify your state District One Deputy Regent of any such activity you are involved in for inclusion. The ICD Centennial in 2020 will celebrate ICD’s first one hundred years, showcase the Colleges’ accomplishments, and promote ICD in the next century. Every Section, Region, District, and individual Fellow will learn of opportunities to participate, create, and/or plan a celebration. The Centennial year begins January 1, 2020 and runs until mid-November when the International College Gala will take place in Nagoya, Japan. All New Fellows are most welcome to receive their Fellowship in Japan in November 2020 should they choose.

Worldwide Fellows are encouraged to read upcoming communications on how he/she can become part of ICD’s Centennial Celebration. The 2018 Council Annual meeting will take place in New York City during the Greater New York Annual Meeting.

Dr. Kathleen O’Loughlin Dr. Kathleen O’Loughlin is Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the American Dental Association. Prior to joining the ADA, Dr. O’Loughlin served as the Chief Dental Officer for United Health Group, and President and CEO of Delta Dental of MA. Dr. O’Loughlin received her bachelor’s degree cum laude from Boston University in 1974 and her doctorate from Tufts University summa cum laude in 1981. In 1998, Dr. O’Loughlin received a master’s degree in Public Health and Health Care Management from Harvard University.

Dr. O’Loughlin practiced dentistry for over 20 years in Medford and Winchester, MA, while serving as an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in the Department of General Dentistry as a course director. She currently serves as a Trustee of Tufts University and is a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Overseers for Tufts Dental School.

Take a chance All of us have achieved our current positions in life by taking chances. For many of us just applying to dental school was taking a chance. No one enjoys rejection but “nothing ventured, nothing gained”. It is very difficult for many of us to go out of our comfort zone-to move to the edge and have a look over.

I recently had the opportunity to participate in a fundraising activity for a local dental clinic in Nashua, NH. The activity was to rappel from the roof of a 24 story building (269 feet). Talk about going out of my comfort zone! I have a significant fear of heights. I have a horrible time going towards the edge of any tall structure- I don’t even like glass elevators and move to the rear when in one. But I did it. What a metaphor for life. I suppose if I could do this rappel there is little to stop me from anything.

How about you? What are you facing that would propel you “over the edge”?

During his Convocation Address to the 2016 class of new ICD Fellows, Terry Dickinson related his views of taking a chance.

“Show up, step out on the edge of life- be a part of something greater than yourself ”. Little did I know that I would literally step “over the edge”. Eleanor Roosevelt spoke of chances also: “do what you feel in your heart to be right for you’ll be criticized always”. That pretty much sums up how I have approached things in my life and I expect many of you as well. After all, you are Fellows because you have taken chances and accomplished so much.

DISTINGUISHED AWARD WINNER 2018 CAROLYN J. MALON, DDS Farmington, CT

At the 2018 ICD Luncheon at the Yankee Dental Meeting on January 26, 2018 Dr. Carolyn J. Malon of Farmington, CT will receive the 2018 Distinguished Service Award from ICDDistrict One. Carolyn is most deserving of this award and we hope that you will be able to join us at the luncheon to help honor her. Carolyn practices Dentistry with her husband Dr. Steve Moran at Family Dental Care of Farmington, CT. They have practiced together in Farmington since 2012 and before that their practice was in New Britain, CT. Carolyn is originally from New York City and is a graduate of Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY and the Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, DC in 1985. Since graduating from Dental school, she has been extremely active in organized dentistry, in community service locally, nationally and internationally, and is extremely generous with her time and resources serving those in need. Some examples: • Delegate, Alternate Delegate to ADA House of Delegates from 2006 - 2015 and is the current Deputy Whip for the First District • Served as President of the Connecticut State Dental Association in 2012 – 2013 and has literally served on just about every committee and council for the CSDA • Has been a leader and participant in the CT MOM from 2008 to the present day, Dental Lifeline Network, Give Kids a Smile and Nkozi Hospital in Uganda • Always active in her Church, community associations, children’s activities and anywhere else where there is a need.

Carolyn has also received numerous commendations and awards for her charitable and community service throughout her career. Dr. Malon is intimately involved in a project I know she will speak more about at the Luncheon – her work with a Pilot Preventive Dental Project at the Nkozi Hospital in Uganda. She and her family have been deeply devoted to the needy in Uganda for many years.

Carolyn and her husband Steve have two teenage children and live in West Hartford, CT. She enjoys skiing of all kinds (downhill, cross country and water skiing), snowboarding, and ice skating. She is also happy trying out new recipes in the kitchen. And a part of her story not to be forgotten, she is also very active politically, and spends a good deal of time advocating on behalf of the dental profession and her patients at the state capitol.

Congratulations to Carolyn on receiving this prestigious award.

USA Section Distinguished Deputy Regent Award Recipient

Dr. Jeffrey Dodge Dr. Jeffrey Dodge, Deputy Regent of Rhode Island is the 2017 recipient of the USA-ICD Distinguished Deputy Regent Award.

District One Vice-Regent Dr. Eliot Paisner spoke of Dr. Dodge’s many contributions to his community and District One. The award was presented by USA-ICD Foundation Treasurer, Dr. Michael Bydalek during the Deputy Regent and Vice-Regent brunch.

Connecticut NEW FELLOW Dr. Jeffrey Hoos of Stratford, CT is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Hoos has lectured, published and participated in research extensively. Jeff is involved in several dental and community activities including CTMOM and Veterans Affairs Support services. Nominated by Drs. Zissi and Brady.

STATE NEWS In looking over the list of ICD fellows from Connecticut, I have chosen to highlight four individuals for their selfless adherence to the ideals of the ICD: Integrity, Leadership, and Service.

The first is Dr. Jeremiah J. Lowney, Jr, or Dr. Jerry as his friends and patients might refer to him. Dr. Lowney was inducted into the ICD in 1988. He is a practicing orthodontist from Norwich, CT, but he is probably best known for his establishment of the nonprofit Haitian Health Foundation, which serves more than 225,000 people in more than 100 remote villages in the Grand Anse district of Haiti. With the recent spate of hurricanes in 2017, the recurring task of attending to the impoverished people of Haiti after natural disasters has increased. Dr Lowney with his bright eyes and welcoming smile will passionately describe the efforts to anyone who will listen.

A second individual to be an unsung hero is Dr. R. Lamont MacNeil, or “Monty”, the Dean of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, in Farmington, CT. Dean Monty has been a fellow of the ICD since 1988 with his practice concentration in periodontics. The dean is responsible not only for the operations of the dental school, and also handles the annual “White Coat Ceremony” for incoming dental students and oversees the undergraduate dental student service mission externships to foreign and domestic locations.

The third individual I would like to recognize is Dr. Tom Galvin, a general dentist from Glastonbury, CT. Dr Galvin has been an ICD fellow since 1988. Even with some personal health issues, Dr Galvin’s credits include precepting dental students at the UConn dental school and hygiene students at Goodwin College. Additionally, Dr. Tom has previously served as the president of the Hartford (CT) Dental Society. Tom annually treks out to Utah with a small group of prosthodontists to provide dental prosthodontic services to the Native Americans on several Navajo reservations. And no matter the weather, every Thanksgiving morning, Dr. Tom volunteers his services to the Manchester (CT) Road Race with his usual smile and good cheer abounding.

Finally the fourth person I would like to give a shout out is Dr. Mark B. Desrosiers of Columbia, CT. Dr. Desrosiers started his career as a general dentist, but realized his passion was in endodontics in which he is board certified. Dr. Mark has been a fellow of the ICD since 2012 and previously was the president of the Connecticut State Dental Association. As well as being a full time private group practice clinician, Dr. Desrosiers has served at several Connecticut Mission of Mercy free dental clinics.

His avocation and desire to serve others extends beyond dentistry where he serves as the Training Committee chairman of the Connecticut Rivers Council of the Boy Scouts of America which serves more than 25,000 youth and adults in most cities and towns in Connecticut. I also want to give a shout out to past deputy regent for CT Dr. Tom Brady, as he recovers from shoulder surgery.

Maine NEW FELLOW Dr. James Oshetski is a graduate of The University of Maryland Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and completed a General Practice residency program at the Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Maryland. Dr. Oshetski is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and several Oral Implantology organizations. Dr. Oshetski lectures widely on digital and implant dentistry. Jim has had a strong involvement in the leadership of his component dental society and volunteers at the Oasis Free Dental Clinic. Jim is a Captain in the US Coast Guard. He is an avid fisherman and studio musician. Nominated by Dr. Schneider and Dr. Kong.

STATE NEWS We have several Fellows who serve in leadership positions in the Maine Dental Association (MDA) including President-elect Kathryn Horutz; Vice-President, James Koelbl; Secretary, Dean Tourigny; and Long-term delegate Jonathan Shenkin.

The ninth Annual “Dentists Who Care for ME”, co-founded by Demitroula Kouzounas and Barry Saltz, was held on Nov 3. A number of dentists across the State play a role by either opening their offices or joining in to provide free care for the day to underserved Maine citizens who do not have a dental home. This was to be an exciting chapter in our history as the University of New England College of Dental Medicine (CDM) was to open their clinic and have the students participate, cultivating one of the CDM’s core values of social responsibility.

Unfortunately, on October 30th a devastating wind storm with 50-60 mph wind speeds toppled trees and knocked out power to nearly 500,000 residents across the state. The dental school was closed for a week and similar outages occurred throughout the area shutting down dental offices as well.

However, we were fortunate to have a number of offices come online with power the night before and WHC4ME program moved ahead. We expect our 10th Annual event to be the biggest yet with a major push from the MDA who will play a greater role moving forward. As of our 8th year (not including 2017) this completely unfunded program with its participating dentists has seen over 3500 patients and has donated care valued at over $1.2 million.

Massachusetts

Dr. Joseph Calabrese practices General Dentistry in Boston, MA and is a 1991 graduate of the Henry M. Goldman School of Dentistry at Boston University. He is also an Assistant Dean/Clinical Associate professor in General and Geriatric Dentistry at BU. Dr. Calabrese also lectures extensively and has authored many articles on various topics in numerous textbooks, journals and other publications. In addition to his duties at BU he is also the Dental Director in the Hebrew Senior Life organization. In his spare time, he is an accomplished carpenter and thoroughly enjoys watching his sons play soccer, basketball and volleyball for their High School. Dr. Calabrese was nominated by Drs. Schnell and Kong.

Dr. Roxanna Hashemian is a 1994 graduate of the Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. She was in private practice from 1994 until 2010 and is now a Clinical Instructor at the Boston University School of Dental Medicine. She has lectured at numerous venues and has published extensively in various dental journals. Dr. Hashemian also volunteers for many local organizations and supports many other charitable ventures both here and abroad. She loves traveling, hiking, camping, swimming, Yoga and Pilates in her spare time. Dr. Hashemian was nominated by Drs. Mandelbaum and Chang.

Dr. Iman Saad Labib resides in Brookline, MA and practices in various locations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. She received her BDS degree in 1989 from the Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine at Cairo University in Egypt and her DMD degree from Boston University in 1996. She has advanced training in Endodontics and is Board eligible in Pediatric Dentistry.

She has several hospital and academic appointments and has lectured and published extensively. Dr. Labib was nominated by Drs. Derosier and Kong.

Dr. Gail Link McCausland is a Periodontist and a faculty member at the Boston University Harry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She is a 1994 graduate of the Dental School of the University of Connecticut and received her Certificate in Periodontology from UConn in 1997. Dr. McCausland has numerous academic appointments at BU and lectures extensively at BU and around the country. She is an active volunteer in her local community and in organized dentistry. She has two children and enjoys traveling, hiking and bicycling with them along with gardening and cooking. Dr. McCausland was nominated by Drs. Price and Kong.

Dr. Hesham Nouh graduated from the October 6 University with a BDS degree in 2006 and received his Certificate in Prosthodontics from BU in 2015. He was in private practice for a few years and since 2016 he has been the Director of PreDoctoral Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry at BU. Dr. Nouh has lectured at various conferences and has written several articles for various journals. He has volunteered for several Global Days of Service and in his spare time he enjoys playing the guitar and fishing. Dr. Nouh was nominated by Drs. Bendayan and Kong.

Dr. Kadamari Rawal graduated from the Dr. D.Y. Patil School of Dentistry with a BDS degree in 2009 and received a Certificate from the AEGD program at BU in 2010 and an MSD in Public Health in 2017. Her specialty is Dental Public Health. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor in Restorative Science, AEGD and Geriatrics at BU. Dr. Rawal has made numerous presentations at national and local meetings and is a very active volunteer at such places as Rosie’s Place, the Greater Boston Food Bank and the Pine Street Inn in the Boston area and in her home country of India. She enjoys painting, baking, the culinary arts, food blogging, world travel and kayaking. Dr. Rawal was nominated by Drs. Moriarty and Chang.

Dr. Ancy Verdier is a 2003 graduate of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and he received his Certificate in Periodontology from Tufts in 2006. He currently practices as a Periodontist inWorcester, MA. Dr. Verdier has been involved in research for Crest and has lectured at Tufts. He is active in his community with the Evidence Dance Company and Edeyo Foundation. Hobbies include golfing, biking, traveling and hiking. Dr. Verdierwas nominated by Drs. Zissi and Falzone.

STATE NEWS Our ICD Fellows continue to be well represented among the Massachusetts Dental Society leadership. Currently serving as President is David Lustbader;President-Elect Howard Zolot;Vice-President Janis Moriarty and Treasurer Thomas Trowbridge. Our cocaptains for the MDS Miles and Smiles Team Janis Moriarty and Pelly Chang joined with over 50 walkers to raise $7,500 for the Jimmy Fund marathon Walk.

New Hampshire NEW FELLOWS Dr. Raymond Orzechowski received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania and practices in Concord, NH. An active member of the New Hampshire Dental Society, Dr. Orzechowski has served as officer in his local dental society component including President and has been a trustee of the NHDS. Dr. Orzechowski is of the founder of the Concord, NH Dental Sealant Program and volunteers to provide emergency and restorative care for the participants. He has been a tireless advocate for children’s oral health and an effective fundraiser to help the coalition to expand the scope of services provided. Ray is an avid bicyclist and enjoys kayaking, skiing and cooking. Nominated by Dr. Mills and Dr. Paisner.

Dr. Thomas Warguska is a graduate of the New Jersey College of Medicine and Dentistry where he received his DMD. Dr. Warguska has served in the US Navy. Dr. Warkuska is a Certified Dental Consultant and participates with the American Society of Implant and Restorative Dentistry. He has served with the NH Peer Review Committee for 15 years. Tom is an avid golfer, and enjoys cruise traveling, and cooking. Nominated by Dr. Couret and Dr. Paisner.

Veterans Dental Initiative In New Hampshire, veterans seeking dental care find it difficult to navigate the VA’s qualifications to get access to dental care.

Often, to get any benefits you must be 100% disabled and it must be service related. Responding to this unmet need, Tom Raffio, CEO of Northeast Delta Dental and I, as Program Coordinator, formed the Veterans Initiative program. With support from Jack Heath and his morning radio show we launched the program. The veteran calls in to the broadcast NH Deputy Regent Richard Vachon addressed and gets a phone number to call. I arrange for them the NH Fellowship during the annual meeting to be seen. As one of the cadre of participating denin September 2017. Through this we often restore not just their overall health, but also improve their confidence and self-esteem. Several dentists have responded and share the cost of care with Northeast Delta Dental. Many of them are veterans themselves and just want to assist their colleagues who have served their country. To date the program has served 33 Veterans. It’s a start!

Rhode Island NEW FELLOWS Dr. Elizabeth Benz is a graduate of Boston University Henry H. Goldman School of Dental Medicine, completed a general practice residency program at Brown University/ Rhode Island Hospital and a “mini-MBA” certificate for dentists from Bentley College. Dr. Benz is Director of the Hospital Based Dental Center and General Practice Residency Director at the Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She is active on the staff at RI Hospital/ Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Elizabeth has participated in many community dental activities including RIMOM, the RI Oral Health Commission and Give Kids a Smile. Nominated by Drs. Connor and Dodge.

Dr. Russel Chin practices in Pawtucket, RI. A graduate of New York University College of Dentistry, Dr. Chin is a 40-year delegate to the RI Dental Society House of Delegates. Dr. Chin is a member of the RI Board of Dental Examiners and examines candidates for dental licensure. He is Past-President of the New England Society of Clinical Hypnosis. Nominated by Drs. Benoit and Dodge.

Dr. Daniel Coleman, a Periodontist from Johnstown, RI received his DMD and certification in Periodontics from the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Coleman has written numerous articles and participates in research and lectures on dental topics. Dan volunteers with Donated Dental Services and has travelled to the Dominican Republic following the 2010 earthquake. He enjoys travel, farmers markets and spending time with his family. Nominated by Drs. Katz and Benoit.

Dr. John Kiang is a graduate of Boston University School of Dental Medicine where he received his DMD and of New York University Lutheran where he received his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kiang is in process of completing a Certificate in Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and related Disorders from Brown University/ RI Hospital in Providence. Dr. Kiang enjoys staff privileges at Fatima Hospital, Hasbro Children’s Hospital and RI Hospital. He is Assistant Clinical Faculty in Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry at New York University- Lutheran. John is an accomplished 5 time finisher of Ironman Triathlons. Nominated by Drs. Caviccio and Dodge.

STATE NEWS The award named for Dr. Clark Sammartino, who was a driving force bringing the DDS program to RI in 1989, is given annually to a dentist who has gone above and beyond for the DDS program and the citizens of RI. This past fiscal year, 2016-2017, 139 patients were served; the total value of donated services was $354,000.00 Since the inception of the program in 1989 the 164 volunteer dentists of RI have donated over $6 million in free services to the states elderly and disabled. Dr. Photopoulos joins past recipient ICD Fellows Drs. Sammartino and Francis Connor. Among his many contributions to dentistry is his “Happy Tooth Song�, of which he treated the group to a rendition.

Dr. Martin Nager, President of Dental Lifeline Network, formerly Donated Dental Services, presents the 2017 Clark Sammartino Outstanding Contribution Award to Dr. Jim Photopoulos.

The Rhode Island Dental Association presented Dr. Robert Bartro with a RI State flag which was flown over the Statehouse. This flag was in recognition of his many contributions to dentistry and the RIDA. Dr. Bartro currently works for the State as the Administrator of the RI Board of Dental Examiners.

Fellows Richard Walsh, Bruce Gouin, Martin Nager and Christine Benoit participated in a full day of charitable dental care for those in need in Charlestown, RI. The 9th annual Dentistry From the Heart took place October 14th and provided $119,197 in preventive, restorative, endodontic, and oral surgical care to 217 patients.

PEACE CORPS PROJECT U.S.A Fellows are volunteering to provide a dental examination and radiographs for Peace Corps applicants at no charge.
