James Watkins
James Watkins born 1985, is International Art Centre’s youngest artist and has been with the gallery for eight years since studying at Elam School Of Fine Arts. His works, particularly those of the Red Roof Series, feature illuminated landscapes sometimes portrayed under the blue skies of summer, but often reflecting a dramatic atmospheric of their own.
Speaking of his work the artist says: “My paintings represent an interest in traditional images of West Coast, New Zealand. A remote, sparsely populated region with empty homes, broken fence lines and untamed landscapes. I try to make beautiful paintings which convey certain personal interpretations of the reality of our life in New Zealand. I’m particularly interested in the simple architectural structures of older New Zealand along with the universal symbol of home. In my paintings, home is a place of belonging, a happy memory, security”.

Many of those communities which do not have a statue or entry gate, and indeed some that do, often have a Memorial Hall, a hall for the community, such as the one in Ormondville, Hawkes Bay. Occasionally the building has some other public function, such as the War Memorial Library in Lower Hutt or the War Memorial Baths in Millers Flat, Otago.
