Conditions of Sale & A Guide to Buyers
The highest bidder shall be the buyer. In the event of any dispute as to the bidding in respect of any lot, that lot may be offered again at the discretion of the auctioneer whose decision shall be absolute and final.
The auctioneer has the right -
(i) to refuse any bid;
(ii) to advance the bidding at his absolute discretion;
(iii) to place a reserve on any lot;
(iv) to place a bid or bids on behalf of the seller;
(v) to withdraw any lot from sale;
(vi) to require a successful bidder to pay forthwith the whole or any part of the purchase price.
The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same.
From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer. Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged.
All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre.
Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Friday 24 February 2018 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer.
No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress.
SUBJECT BIDS
When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase.

Estimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. Estimates are based on hammer price and do not include our buyers premium.

Eftpos: Available for transactions $2,000 or less which is the banks daily limit. For transactions less than $4,000 a 50% deposit on the evening and balance following morning is acceptable as long as the goods remain on our premises until full payment is made.

The Wendy Pharazyn & the late Bruce DahL Collection 1 - 75
I met Bruce in June, 2006. I had a collection of my late husband Conrad Pharazyn's watercolours as well as works by other artists we had collected over the years. Bruce had an art collection acquired over the years from galleries and auctions around Wellington.
Over the next ten years we spent much of our time in dealer galleries taking particular interest in works by emerging artists. In Auckland we got to know Richard Thomson from the International Art Centre and Jonathan Gooderham from Jonathan Grant Galleries. Bruce and I purchased art in Dunedin, Melbourne, Napier and Wellington. Whenever the opportunity presented itself, we would visit artists in their studios. One day, whilst in the Wairarapa, Bruce said he was going to ring Megan Campbell to see if we might visit her house/studio in Featherstone. We had a wonderful time talking to her about art and life and left with three more of her paintings - fantastical gems of colour and quirkiness. Bruce and I had fun collecting our art, each time we acquired a painting we enjoyed re-arranging the others to accommodate it. Eventually we ended up removing some of our interior doors to provide more wall space for our collection.
After a four year illness Bruce died in October 2016. Now it is time to lighten the load of material possessions. Richard said to me "Someone else will have the pleasure of enjoying these paintings."

Nugent Herrmann Welch OBE was a notable New Zealand artist born in Akaroa in 1881. He was appointed an OffceroftheOrderofthe British Empire in the 1949 King’s Birthday Honours for services to art in New Zealand. He died in 1970 leaving a pictorial legacy of artworks.

The PINE series originated from poem fragments typed onto the backs of postcards Bill Manhire sent to Hotere from London in the early 1970s. Hotere produced this series of watercolours around them in 1972, and also produced a set of images using woodblock printed letters: PINE, is arranged in series down the left-hand side of the paper with the handwritten piece of poem next to it on the right. These two examples have recently been repatriated from Australia having spent more than thirty years offshore in the same collection.

In one room is Michael Dell painting still-lifes on linen with delicate precision. His works are no more than a bottle and a couple of boxes. They are arranged with the severe formality of geometric abstraction and their pale colouring emphasises their sculptural quality.
The arrangement is scrupulous, with tiny details of hinges on the boxes and little press-stud catches. Delicate, precise, poised - they exactly hit a target at a limited range.

Mr Waldo – Rabbit catcher, barber, herbalist, cat doctor, quack, dreams of his mother and his many unhappy, failed marriages. He is a notorious alcoholic and general troublemaker and is involved in an affair with Polly Garter. The seventeen snoring gentle stone of Mr Waldo. ‘Hush, love, hush. I’m widower Waldo now.
Under Milk Wood is a 1954 radio drama by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas, commissioned by the BBC and later adapted for the stage. It is also available as a book.
Jane Evans, created twenty five characterisations from the Thomas prose and drawing on her own recollection of types she had observed. The relevant character descriptions extracted from the porse poem were inscribed on the paintings themselves which, as they accumulated, called into existence the people of Milkwood. They satisfied the artist’s interest in the theatrical, unconventional and colourful manifestations of apparently ordinary lives.
Under Milkwood was a stunning series. Theatrical in their impact, these forceful, vigorous paintings interpreted Thomas’s glorious array of slightly crazed villages in sympathetic, vivid images. Jane Evans, John Coley, Hazard Press, 1997
