Stallion stars in Germany

Exciting times in Germany with first-crop yearlings by the Arc winner Torquator Tasso and the top German two-year-old Rubaiyat hitting the sale ring this autumn, reports Catrin Nack

WHILE IT WOULD EXAGGERATE REALITY SLIGHTLY to say all is rosy in Germany’s horseracing garden, the two stallions on the German roster with first-crop yearlings add a frission of excitement.

German foal crops are dwindling and, in an ever-increasing global market, size simply matters. Speed sells, and Germany’s traditional – if not to say old-fashioned – approach to breeding might look just that: outdated.

But every time one looks at the figures and wonders where the saviour is going to come from, up springs a dual Derby-placed Lazy Griff or a Geography to fly the flag for German breeding. The latter was slightly disappointing at Epsom´s Derby meeting but left that form well behind when fighting all the way to the line to finish second in the mile Prix Messidor (G3) at Chantilly.

Lazy Griff is a true product of German breeding, and was bought by bloodstock agent Jeremy Brummitt at his happy hunting ground, the BBAG September Sale.

The horse surely stands for all that is good in the German thoroughbred – his dam may carry a slightly unusual DEN suffix, but he was born and raised on German soil, his father a late son of Monsun. A Group winner at two, Lazy Griff has been unlucky to meet Lambourn in all his three races in 2025. One-sided those results may have been, but Lazy Griff showed true grit and determination; and running in the colours of Middleham Park Racing he has not done his popularity any harm. In fact, his is the type of story that keeps the dream of the “normal” people alive.

Both were sold as yearlings at the BBAG September Sale, Germany’s premier sale, the

sale also having produced last year’s Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) winner Tamfana, who went on to run a fine race when third to Charyn and Facteur Cheval in last October’s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.

This year’s sale is scheduled for the first Friday in September and, as usual, it will be flanked by racing.

There will be plenty of yearlings catalogued by local stalwarts such as Protectionist and Soldier Hollow and company, but two stallions will be represented by their debut crops.

The pair pick up where we started – one was a tip-top racehorse, unraced at two who went on to become one of the best – if not the bestGerman middle-distance horse of last decade; the other as early and as precocious a two-yearold as we have seen in Germany in a long time.

Both were born in 2017 and both raced until 2022.

The most recent of Germany’s three Arc winners, Torquator Tasso, a son of the late Adlerflug, is clearly one of the best racehorses to retire to stud in Germany for many a season.

With the fabled blue hen Allegretta as his fourth dam, he couldn’t have written himself a more interesting stallion pedigree either.

“He won the Arc, was placed in another and was runner-up in a King George as well,” acknowledges Karl-Dieter Ellerbracke, who owned the horse in a partnership in training and now stands him at Gestüt Auenquelle, adding: “We had decent offers from abroad but our aim was always to strengthen German breeding.”

Auenquelle was founded in the early 1980s, and has a long tradition as a stallion farm, Steffen Jacoby is now its stud manager.

Torquator Tasso is now the sole stallion

resident, but the farm’s own broodmare band of 30 has helped give him the numbers he needs to have an impact at stud.

Torquator Tasso is represented by 18 lots in the BBAG September Sale with six due to be consigned by Auenquelle.

“He was very popular from the start and many breeders who used him in his first season saw the foals and came right back,” says Ellerbracke.

“In fact, foreign breeders who saw his first foals at other studs were so impressed that they then sent their mares, too. He covered around 80 in his first season and was just as busy in the next two.

“He was your quintessential stayer with a great turn of foot, exactly what you want in a racehorse.

“He represents these traits in such an extraordinary way and convinces with his character and physique as well. He isn’t your typical Adlerflug, who can be a bit light in bone, but is simply a stunning looking horse.

“His fertility has always been very good at 90 per cent. As a typical owner-breeder, we are going to support him in the racing yards as well.”

Auenquelle offers a half-brother to the Listed winner and one-time Deutsches Derby favourite Delgardo (Lot 68), as well as a strong-looking filly from one of Auenquelle’s long-standing families, the “Oriental” dam-line (Lot 41).

Turfwilli (Lot 53) comes from Auenquelle’s “T-line” of Turfdonna and Turfkönig; Tarkhan and Turf Sumy are black-type names further up the young colt’s pedigree.

Torquator Tasso was never syndicated, but eight breeding rights were sold before his second career commenced. Those rights enabled buyers to send six mares in his first four seasons

at stud, with one cover every year after.

Thus, major German consignors such as Gestüt Brümmerhof, Wittekindshof and Fährhof are set to offer yearlings by Torquator Tasso.

Brümmerhof, always one of the leading consignors at the September Sale, offers three lots of which Aureus (Lot 63), from the family that brought the champion Aspectus, and Macaron (Lot 166), whose dam Marshmallow was a smashing racehorse and who has the Preis von Baden (G1) winner Mendocino close up, are of particular interest.

There are also two by the stallion catalogued for the Arqana August Sale.

Haras du Capucines offers a March-born filly (Lot 243) out of Seeyouinseptember (Siyouni), a daughter of the Listed two-year-old winner Sivoliere (Sea The Stars) and a grand-daughter

Two-year-old form represented by Rubaiyat Rubaiyat, by Areion out of a mare by Lomitas, hails from the same sire’s crop as Alson, who is represented by his first two-year-olds this season. Both were precocious juveniles, by German standards, at least.

In Germany, two-year-old racing starts at the end of May; Rubaiyat kicked off his campaign in August and stormed through the year unbeaten, his victories including the Group 3 Preis der Winterfavoriten and the Group 2 Premio Gran Criterium.

At three, he stretched his unbeaten run, and then went on to be placed in the Mehl-MulhensRennen (G2) and the Premio Parioli (G3).

A true globetrotter, he was just shy of top-class, but he was hardy and willing, and a fighter.

“He was one of the top five two-year-olds of the last 20 years or so,” says Holger Faust of Gestüt Karlshof and who has been involved with the horse throughout his career.

“He had class and he was tough – for instance, he ran in the Italian Guineas just two weeks after the German, and he raced for four seasons.

“And don’t forget he was also Horse of the Year as a two-year-old in Germany! I have no doubt he is going to make his way as a stallion”

Faust went on to manage him as racehorse for owner Darius Racing and he is now a part-owner now the horse is in the stallion ranks.

“I think he is a natural heir to Areion, from the dominant Big Shuffle sire line, and we need this sort of speed and precocity in Germany,” reports Faust.

“Rubaiyat covered 46 mares in his first year, and interest in him hasn’t dwindled. Karlshof has sent him more mares every year, that’s how happy we are with his foals.

“He was effective up to a mile, but I have no doubt his offspring may well get 1m2f at least, as he was Group-placed over 2000m.

“He got quality mares with some staying blood, and hopefully he can add his precocity.”

Gestüt Karlshof offers two fillies (Lot 81 and Lot 194) from interesting black-type producing families – ignore them at your peril! ■

Simon Sweeting of Overbury Stud is hoping for a repeat of Ardad’s stallion success with Caturra, who was an even faster winner of the Flying Childers Stakes and has large drafts catalogued in the Goffs Premier Sale, the Somerville Sale and the Tattersalls Ireland September Sale

IT TOOK THREE attempts to pin down the busy and multi-hatted Simon Sweeting of Overbury Stud for a telephone interview to chat about Caturra, the son of Mehmas standing at the farm and with first-crop yearlings this year.

First, a rookie mistake on behalf of the interviewer when a lack of preparation resulted in a call to Sweeting’s mobile while he was at Goffs UK and ten lots away from selling a NH three-year-old store. The offer to talk about the Flat stallion was very politely postponed.

The second call, this time arranged at a pre-allocated time organised via WhatsApp, clashed with something out of anyone’s control unfortunately coinciding with Sweeting rounding up some errant cows. Very kindly Sweeting managed to answer the phone, but obviously there were more immediate things on his mind and needing his attention.

It was a case of third call lucky – the busy, hands-on stud manager found time to chat when in his car on a Friday afternoon on his return from wearing his EBF hat for duties at Ascot.

The efforts taken to make contact with Sweeting were worthwhile – it goes without saying that chatting with him is always time well spent, but, as the stud manager is so optimistically looking forward to Caturra’s stock hitting the sale ring this autumn and next year’s racecourse, his enthusiasm was infectious.

Caturra: by Mehmas
Caturra won the Flying Childers in the race’s seventh-fastest recorded time and the quickest since 2015
Grosser Dallmayr-Preis, Gr.1, Munich
Grosser Preis von Bayern, Gr.1, Munich
Derby, Gr.1, Hamburg
Chariot Stakes, Gr.1, Newmarket

It was a concern that interviewing Sweeting might struggle to recall all the facts and figures required while doing the two things at once, but Sweeting was right on the bluetooth button, so well does he know his stallions.

The chance emerged for Sweeting to stand the Group 2 Flying Childers winner on the back of another success story for Overbury – the top first-season that had been enjoyed by the farm’s Ardad in 2021 meant that when bloodstock agent Richard Brown suggested to his client Saeed Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, the owner of Caturra, that the Gloucestershire-based stud would be the right farm to stand the son of Mehmas, it was pretty much a done deal.

“Saeed Al Qassimi had seen the success we had enjoyed with Ardad,” recalls Sweeting. “They are very similar types of horses – both fast-running Flying Childers winners, and both were bred to be quick with Caturra by Mehmas and Ardad by Kodiac.”

Caturra was an even faster winner of the Doncaster race – as a side note, and not a fact for Sweeting to have recalled while he was driving, but Caturra won the 2021 renewal of the 5f Group 2 in the race’s seventh-fastest recorded time, and the speediest winning time since 2015.

He continues: “We were lucky enough to be able to buy half of him. Saeed Al Qassimi also kept half, and he has been amazing because he has bought a lot of mares to go to the stallion, he’s been a tremendous support, and he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed the process.”

Sweeting adds: “That has been a huge help and, of course, it is always more fun working

with someone who is fully engaged. I just hope he is rewarded for his efforts.”

As to be expected, Sweeting is enthusiastic about the prospects for the first crop of the stallion who also won the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes at Newbury and achieved a BHA rating high of 110 – yet he tempers his hopes with the realistic views of a stockman.

“Of course, you just don’t know until the two-year-olds hit the track, but the foals were very well received last year, I know every stallion owner says it, but they were a good bunch,” he announces.

“They did not make silly prices at the sales, but were sensible commercial prices and were bought by sensible and successful people, producers who have been around a long time and who know what a good foal looks like. That they were happy and keen to give him a chance was encouraging.”

Caturra’s yearlings will be early on the sale trail this summer with 14 catalogued in the Goffs UK Premier Sale, 13 in the Somerville Sale and five at Tattersalls Ireland September Sale.

Many hail from leading commercial British breeders, well-known for producing Britishbred sprinters, market-friendly stock and good solid racehorses, a hugely encouraging sign and building on the sale debut enjoyed by this crop last autumn.

“It is a good number to have in both early yearling sales,” says Sweeting. “As we stand at the moment we are pointing to positives.

“Of course, it’s entirely up to the stock now –whether they stay sound, have the right mind, the

right temperament, and the right physical abilities. We just have to wait and see what happens next spring, but I think everything is in place so that it will not be a huge surprise if he is a success.”

Two factors that yearling buyers are unable to see when assessing horses are equine hearts and minds – as yet no AI tool has been invented to solve this age-old buying conundrum.

The only evidence available in this regard is to rely on how the youngster’s parents behaved themselves on the racecourse, and to hope that fate has put the required genetic chains in place.

Caturra could just have lined up the heredity dots for his stock – his former trainer Clive Cox frequently reiterated what an amenable

temperament the stallion had a racehorse.

Seemingly, age and retirement have not turned the stallion into a grumpy old man – Sweeting also enthusing as to the great personality the horse has and what a pleasure he is to have around Overbury Stud.

“He is very level-headed, and extremely straightforward to deal with, not all stallions are,” he says. “He is one who could be used to teach stallion handling because he already knows his job, and he has got a very relaxed attitude towards it all. He is so easy to deal with, which makes our life an awful lot easier.”

Of course, commercial stock having a good temperament is a hugely important plus point and one vital for a stallion’s prospects.

“If trainers enjoy having stock by a certain stallion on a yard, then they’ll go and have a look at them at the sales,” outlines the stud manager. “If they don’t like them, well then you are sunk, because no trainer is ever going to be encouraged to buy one – they are never going to smile when the agent says, ‘I’m thinking of buying one!’.

“If horses don’t have the right attitude, however good they could be, the trainers are not going to give them a chance.”

Numbers-wise Caturra, who is one of three sires by Mehmas with 2025 first-crop yearlings, has had three consistent books of mares, with breeders happy to return to use the bay having seen his early crops.

“He covered 74 mares this year, which I think is a decent number, more than our Ardad covered in this third year. He covered 80 last year, and saw 109 in his first year. The numbers are not huge, but certainly enough to give him coverage,” says Sweeting, recalling the numbers accurately but still concentrating on the road and making good progress now on the motorway back to Gloucestershire.

Caturra’s sire Mehmas is going from strength

Caturra has had consistent books throughout his three years at stud, enough Sweeting believes to give him “coverage”

caturra overbury stud

We just have to wait and see what happens next spring, but I think everything is in place so that it will not be a huge surprise if he is a success

to strength in the covering shed, getting better books of mares as his fee has climbed to €70,000 for this spring.

The Tally-Ho Stud-based stallion has also now proved himself as a sire of sires with Supremacy, the sire of last month’s Weatherbys Super Sprint winner Anthelia [Phew, got a mention in for the sponsor of this column].

It bodes well that Mehmas’ speed already appears to be transmitting to the second generation.

Despite Overbury standing the pair of Flying Childers winners, the stallions at Overbury are not all about speed, it has a broad base and the sires range from the star act and top-class dual-purpose sire Golden Horn to the younger NH sire Jack Hobbs and then back to the 11-year-old Ardad, the leading British first-crop Flat stallion of 2021 and sire of the three-time Group 1 winner Perfect Power in that first crop, the success having so vitally paved the way for Caturra.

“Ardad has been popular again, he covered 125 mares, and he is having a lot of winners,” says Sweeting. “National Hunt breeders can’t get enough of Frontiersman – he is inexpensive, having a lot of winners, has had a Grade 3 hurdler, and he gets fabulous-looking foals.

“Jack Hobbs is also having the winners, though he does need a Saturday horse now, and Schiaparelli, who is 22, has had a great season again and for a third year on the trot won the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s Horse and Hound Cup for the leading living British sire of chase winners.”

Sweeting leaves the class act to last, and the pride in his voice when talking about

Golden Horn is unmistakable, and completely understandable.

“If I ever again have a stallion who has two winners at the Cheltenham Festival and a winner at Royal Ascot in the same year, I’ll consider myself to be a very lucky man,” he smiles.

“Golden Horn is just fabulous and for Trawlerman to have won at Ascot in the style he did, it was great.”

As ever the stud man, he says, “I am just looking forward to having another Group 1 winner!” ■

BAAEED

CARTIER HORSE OF THE YEAR, a six-time Group 1 winner from a mile to 1m2f, descended from Shadwell’s blue hen Height Of Fashion and a son of the brilliant Sea

The Stars; Baaeed was the most expensive new stallion in Europe for 2023 and has the potential to be a hugely exciting prospect for Shadwell Stud.

A full-brother to the Group 1 Coronation Cup winner Hukum, Baaeed was an outstanding racehorse and the best sired so far by Sea The Stars with an official rating of 135.

Unraced at two, William Haggas unveiled the bay in a Leicester maiden in early June 2021, which launched a ten-race-winning streak that brought Baaeed to the highest peaks of the sport.

His second start, over the same trip but at Newmarket, created quite the impression, and he started a shade of odds-on in his next race, the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes against a field that included the previous season’s Group 3 Autumn Stakes winner and Group 1 Vertem Futurity runner-up One Ruler. As it transpired, the victory set a template Baaeed would adhere to almost until the end of his racing career.

The Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood was next on the agenda and it was a similar result and the clamour for Baaeed to step into Group 1 company grew to a cacophony. His first outing at the highest level was in the Prix du Moulin where he faced a field that included Group 1 winners Victor Ludorum, Order Of Australia and Snow Lantern.

For the first time in his short career, Baaeed had to show tenacity to cope with the race tactics and the softened ground, but he returned to the ParisLongchamp winners’ enclosure as a Group 1 winner and set up a thrilling clash with the year-older Palace Pier in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. The younger horse won the clash of the generations and he was crowned champion three-year-old miler for 2021.

Kept in training at four, Baaeed picked up the winning thread in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes and carried it into the Queen Anne Stakes (G1) where he was a comfortable winner once more over Real World and Order Of Australia.

At Goodwood for the Sussex Stakes, he triumphed over Darley’s dual Breeders’ Cup winner Modern Games and the previous year’s winner Alcohol Free, who came into the race on the back of July Cup glory.

The desire to see what Baaeed, such a strong finisher over a mile, could do when stepped up to 1m2f in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes was strong and the colt produced his finest performance on the Knavesmire in the Juddmonte International Stakes (G1), putting daylight between himself and Mishriff, his closest pursuer in second.

The Irish Champion Stakes, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and Champion Stakes were all mooted as possible final races for Baaeed,

but connections plumped for the QEII back over a mile.

On rain-softened ground, he never showed anything like his usual form finishing fourth behind Bay Bridge, Adayar and My Prospero.

It was a disappointing end to a glittering career but Baaeed is an excellent and exciting stallion prospect.

He is out of the Listed Prix de Liancourt winner Aghareed (Kingmambo), and her dam Lahudood (Singspiel) won the Grade 1 Flower Bowl Invitational and Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf (G1). She is a half-sister to the Listed winner Kareemah and fourth dam, the Listed Cheshire Oaks second Beshayer, is a half-sister to Nayef, Nashwan and Unfuwain.

Baaeed is bred on the outstanding Sea The Stars–Kingmambo cross, which has produced 23 winners from 25 runners with nine of them successful in black-type contests, which gives a stakes winners-to-runners rate of 36 per cent and a Group 1 winners-to-runners strike rate of 20 per cent.

Just nine members of Baaeed’s first crop came under the hammer as foals and they averaged 243,594gns with an even better median price of 260,000gns. The most expensive Baaeed foal was sold at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale where Shadwell went to 400,000gns for Barton Stud’s colt out of the Group 3 Prix Bertrand de Taragon winner Waliyak (Le Havre).

Katsumi Yoshida purchased going to 280,000gns for a colt out of the winning Galileo mare Tranquil Star, a daughter of dual New Zealand Group 1 winner We Can Say It Now (Starcraft). The colt was sold by Genesis Green Stud.

AT 2 Won Champagne Stakes, Doncaster, Gr.2, (7f. beating Reach For The Moon (GB) and Twilight Jet (IRE)), second in Denford Stakes, Newbury, L., (to Masekela (IRE)), third in Dewhurst Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.1, (to Native Trail (GB)), Futurity Trophy Stakes, Doncaster, Gr.1, (to Luxembourg (IRE)).

AT 3 Won Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Ascot, Gr.1, (8f. beating Modern Games (IRE) and Jadoomi (FR)), Fortune Stakes, Sandown Park, L., (8f. beating Sweet Believer (IRE) and Escobar (IRE)).

BAYSIDE BOY stands alongside his sire New Bay at Ballylinch Stud, was well regarded by connections throughout his career and he saved his best for last when taking a top-level success in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, spoiling the Baaeed retirement parade.

A homebred by Ballylinch, the farm was so taken with him that it retained a share when selling him to Richard Ryan and Teme Valley at Tattersalls October Book 2 for 200,000gns.

Trained by Roger Varian, Bayside Boy was a classy juvenile who made a winning start to his life as a racehorse in a Newbury 7f maiden. He then was runner-up to subsequent Derby fourth Masekela in the Listed Denford Stakes, before showing enormous promise with his victory in Doncaster’s Group 2 Champagne Stakes.

Tried at Group 1 level in the Dewhurst Stakes, he proved himself amongst the best of his generation when third to Native Trail. He then filled the same position in the Vertem Futurity when denied a clear passage behind Luxembourg.

The first three starts of his second season were disappointing – he finished down the field in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (G1) and St James’s Palace Stakes (G1) and was then fourth in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes.

A preference for soft ground in the autumn helped his cause and led to victory in the Listed Fortune Stakes at Sandown setting him up for his triumph at Ascot.

He is a half-brother to Forest Ranger (Lawman), twice a winner of the Group 2 Huxley Stakes and also successful in the Earl Of Sefton and Darley Stakes, both Group 3s.

Another of his half-siblings, the Rip Van Winkle mare Home Cummins, was third in the Listed Fleur de Lys Stakes and is the dam of a winner.

Their dam Alava won the Listed Prix Occitanie and is an Anabaa half-sister to the Listed third Almaguer out of Cerita, who was second in a trio of Listed contests in France and is a daughter of Wolfhound.

Bayside Boy is one of three Group 1 winners from the first two crops of New Bay.

The Prix du Jockey-Club winner by Dubawi has sired 15 individual Group winners to date, three at Group 1 level, and has remained at a €75,000 fee for the past three seasons. His most expensively bred crop to run so far are two-year-olds of this year who were conceived at a fee of €37,500.

At the foal sales last year Bayside Boy averaged 28,446gns for 20 sold and they achieved a median of 29,493gns.

The most expensive of them was Ballylinch Stud’s homebred colt out of Fairy Dancer, a Fastnet Rock half-sister to Breeders’ Cup hero Red Rocks. He was bought by Oneliner Stables for 80,000gns at the December Foal Sale.

1st Dam ALAVA (IRE), won 4 races in France at 2 and 3 years and £64,225 including Prix Occitanie, La Teste De Buch, L. and placed once; dam of 6 winners: BAYSIDE BOY (IRE), see above. NO NAY NEVER’s price hike for the 2019 breeding season on the back of the success earned by his first runners, proved a justified one when that crop came to make its racecourse debut in 2022.

Bred at an advertised fee of €100,000 they increased No Nay Never’s northern hemisphere Group 1 tally to five.

In total that crop yielded six individual juvenile Group winners and included the Group 1 winner Blackbeard, victorious in the Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes.

Bred by Newstead Breeding, he is the first foal out of Muirin, a daughter of Born To Sea who was fourth in the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at two. She was sold at the end of her three-year-old season for €210,000 to Broadhurst Agency.

Muirin has subsequently produced Run Away, who was third in the Listed Prix Saint-Cyr last season and Charles Darwin, one of this year’s leading juveniles and winner of the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes. Both are full siblings to Blackbeard.

Muirin is out of the Group 3 Phoenix Sprint Stakes and Listed Sweet Mimosa Stakes winner Girouette, a daughter of Pivotal, which suggests plenty of speed influences on both sides of Blackbeard’s family.

Blackbeard was bought as a foal for 270,000gns by Jamie McCalmont from Norelands Stud and made a winning debut over 5f at Dundalk in April of his juvenile season. His next start returned a narrow win over Crispy Cat, who would go on to be third in the Norfolk and Flying Childers Stakes (G2), and was a second start winner of the Listed First Flier Stakes at The Curragh.

Stepped up to 6f for May’s Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes, Blackbeard made all to win but was then only fourth behind Bradsell, Persian Force and Royal Scotsman in the Coventry Stakes (G2). Next up he was second to Shartash in the Group 2 Railway Stakes at The Curragh before he resumed winning ways in the Group 2 Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly.

He returned to France for the Group 1 Prix Morny when he was more than up to the task and reversed Ascot form with Persian Force. His defeat of that rival and The Antarctic in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes was even more impressive and an easier job than his French victory over that pair.

Speculation as to whether he would get the Guineas trip or be more of a sprinter, came to naught when it was announced that Blackbeard had suffered an injury in training which precipitated his early retirement to stud.

No Nay Never is now the sire of eight individual Group 1 winners with last season yielding another Prix Morny victor in Whistlejacket. His total of stakes winners so far is 76 from eight crops of racing age with his most expensively bred foals now this crop of yearlings. No Nay Never added two more Royal Ascot winners this June with Charles Darwin joined in the winner’s enclosure by True Love, victorious in the Group 2 Queen Mary. She has gone on to win the Railway Stakes (G2).

Blackbeard’s broodmare sire Born To Sea is the final foal out of the blue hen Urban Sea and won the Listed Blenheim Stakes at two and was runner-up to Camelot in the Irish Derby.

The first foals by Blackbeard averaged 69,445gns at the sales last winter with a median price of 43,204gns. A total of 28 foals sold and both the most expensive colt and filly from his first crop were sold at Tattersalls.

Awbeg Stud’s half-sister to last season’s Group 2 Debutante Stakes and Group 3 Silver Flash and Park Stakes third Barnavarna was the most expensive, making 300,000gns to Norris/ Huntingdon.

Glenvale Stud bought the next best-priced foal, a half-brother to Arizona Blaze, winner of the Group 3 Marble Hill Stakes and third in the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes in 2024, second in this year’s Commonwealth Cup and winner of the Sapphire Stakes (G2). His half-brother cost 190,000gns as a foal from Fittocks Stud.

CATURRA, A SON OF MEHMAS and winner of the Group 2 Flying Childers Stakes, is another tough and talented representative of his high-flying sire.

Another graduate of Tally-Ho Stud, he was sold by the Westmeath farm to Blandford Bloodstock for 110,000gns at Tattersalls October Book 2 and was trained by Clive Cox.

As to be expected, he was a precocious juvenile and made his debut at the Craven meeting and then went on to win a Bath novice over 5f on his second start. He wasn’t beaten all that far in the Coventry Stakes (G2) and earned his first stakes success in the Listed Rose Bowl Stakes. He finished down the field in the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, and was second in the Listed Roses Stakes at York before his flying success over Armor in Doncaster’s Group 2.

His final start of the season was his fifth place behind Perfect Power in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes.

Caturra ran seven times as a three-year-old and made a promising seasonal reappearance when second in the Group 3 Prix Sigy. He was also third in the Group 2 King George Stakes at Goodwood over 5f and in Sandown’s Listed Scurry Stakes.

From the extended family of Classic Cliche and out of the Sleeping Indian mare Shoshoni Wind, he is a full-brother to Tales Of The Heart, placed in the Empress Stakes (L) and Princess Margaret Stakes (G3) last year for Ralph Beckett. She made 650,000gns to John Stewart’s Resolute Racing at the Tattersalls December Sale.

He is a half-brother to the Listed Qatar Derby third Sir Arthur Dayne (Sir Prancealot).

Dam Shoshoni Wind finished second in the Listed Empress Stakes as a juvenile and is a half-sister to the Chipchase Stakes third Burnwynd Boy. Their dam Cadeau Speciale is a half-sister to Silver Flash Stakes winner Triskel and third dam Pat Or Else is an Alzao half-sister to the champion stayer Classic Cliche and to My Emma, who won the Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille. Also under the fourth dam are the Group 1 winners Satono Crown and Lightening Pearl.

Caturra’s foals averaged 16,089gns for 25 sold with the median matching the average. He was the sire of one foal to make more than £50,000 – Whatcote Farm Stud’s colt out of Shrara, a winning daughter of Dandy Man, who was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for 55,000gns at the December Foal Sale. Byerley Stud consigned Caturra’s two highest-priced fillies –half-sister to Zoulu Chief for 28,000gns to Edgar Byrne and a daughter of Bubbly, an Excelebration half-sister to the dam of

DUBAWI LEGEND

ASON OF THE BREED-SHAPER Dubawi, who now stands at a fee of £350,000, Dubawi Legend was bred by Rabbah Bloodstock out of the Meydan Listed UAE 1,000 Guineas-winning and Group 3 UAE Oaks runner-up Lovely Pass (Raven’s Pass).

Lovely Pass is out of the Group 2 Falmouth Stakes winner Macadamia (Classic Cliche), and she is also the dam of Dubawi Legend’s 2018 half-sister Golden Pass (Golden Horn), who was a Listed winner over 1m4f.

Trainer Hugo Palmer kicked off her son’s career in a July maiden over 7f at Doncaster, a race he won, before stepping him up to the Group 3 Acomb Stakes in which he took third place. He then gained top-class Group 1 form with a 2l second placing to Native Trail in the Dewhurst Stakes.

As a three-year-old he failed to trouble the judge again until finishing third in the 7f Hackwood Stakes (G3). After a fifth placing in the 6f Phoenix Stakes Sprint (G3) at The Curragh, he travelled to Germany where he won the 6f Goldene Peitsche (G3). He ran down the field in the Group 1 Haydock Cup Sprint and was retired.

Dubawi Legend achieved a 90 per cent clearance rate at the sales with his ten foals sold making an average of 8,944gns with the median at 6,625gns.

Top of the charts was Starfield Stud’s own colt out of Alpha Lyrae, who made €32,000 to Rabbah Bloodstock at the Goffs November Foal Sale. Starfield Stud was also the vendor of the highest-priced filly, a daughter of Teofilo mare Too Big To Fail, who made €17,000 when bought by Flex Racing. Both were the first foals of their dams.

His fourth and final run of the season came in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes when he was third behind paternal sibling Supremacy and Lucky Vega.

Minzaal did not return to the track until the autumn of his three-year-old season and made a pleasing comeback in the Listed Rous Stakes finishing second on his first start over 5f and on soft ground. That run teed him up for the British Champions Sprint (G1) and, back up to 6f, he demonstrated that he had lost none of his class when third to Creative Force and Glen Shiel. Kept in training at four, he began his third season with a third to Highfield Princess in the Group 2 Duke Of York Stakes. The only disappointing run of his career came next time out in the Platinum Jubilee Stakes (G1) won by Naval Crown. Successfully returning to Group 3 company for the Hackwood Stakes he beat Dubawi Legend and Go Bears Go, but then was

thwarted by Highfield Princess in the Prix Maurice de Gheest (G1).

A triumphant end to his career came in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup, a scintillating success which set a speed record for Haydock, and earned Minzaal a stallion berth at Derrinstown.

He is one of three winners out of Pardoven, an unraced half-sister to the Group 3 Gordon Stakes second Firebet, and to Seeking The Prize, a son of Zafonic who was also Group 3-placed. Her half-brothers Special War (Warning) and Dilshaan’s Prize (Dilshaan) were both third in European Listed races.

Minzaal’s second dam Dancing Prize finished third in the Lingfield Oaks Trial (L) and is a Sadler’s Wells sister to Dance To The Top, who was second in the Fillies’ Mile and is the dam of Group 2 winner and Group 1-placed Bankable.

She is also a half-sister to the Listed City of York Stakes winner and the Group 1 Underwood Stakes second Polar Bear.

Minzaal’s first-crop was a hit at the foal sales earning an average of 45,926gns, almost four times his covering fee. The median was similarly impressive at 42,532gns.

Top price for the 46 sold came at the December Foal Sale where Tally-Ho Stud went to 165,000gns for Kellsgrange Stud’s half-brother to juvenile winners Confident Star and Spanish Phoenix.

There was another six-figure sale at Goffs where Rob Speers bought the half-brother to Listed Charles II Stakes winner Jash for €190,000 from Oak Leaf Stud.

A third Minzaal colt joined the six-figure club at Tattersalls –Baroda Stud’s son of the Listed Ruby Stakes winner Erysimum bought for 100,000gns by Glenvale Stud.

AT 2 Jt Champion 2yr old colt in France in 2021. Won Middle Park Stakes, Newmarket, Gr.1, (6f. beating Castle Star (IRE) and Armor (GB)), Prix Morny, Deauville, Gr.1, (5½f. beating Trident (FR) and Asymmetric (IRE)), Norfolk Stakes, Ascot, Gr.2, (5f. beating Go Bears Go (IRE) and Project Dante (GB)).

AT 3 Champion 3yr old sprinter in Europe in 2022. Won Commonwealth Cup, Ascot, Gr.1, (6f. beating Flaming Rib (IRE) and Flotus (IRE)), Greenham Stakes, Newbury, Gr.3, (7f. beating Lusail (IRE) and Angel Bleu (FR)).

PERFECT POWER was a breeze-up star and a brilliant two-year-old who trained on to be a Group 1 sprinter at three.

He was bred by Tally-Ho Stud from the first crop of another of its recent star graduates, the Flying Childers and Windsor Castle Stakes winner Ardad.

Perfect Power was bought for £110,000 at the Goffs UK Breeze Up Sale by Blandford Bloodstock and was third on debut for Richard Fahey.

The colt put that experience to good use when winning on his second start, and was then sent to Royal Ascot for the Norfolk Stakes (G2) in which he nailed Go Bears Go in the dying strides.

A bad trip in the Richmond Stakes (G2) on his next outing saw him finish fifth, but he was quickly back to winning ways in his very first Group 1 outing in the Prix Morny. The colt showed that 6f was well within his scope and repeated that in the Middle Park Stakes for a second Group 1 success.

He managed to eke out enough from his reserves to win the Group 3 Greenham Stakes on his seasonal reappearance but the mile of the Guineas was beyond him. He was then dropped back to sprint trips, and earned his third Group 1 in Royal Ascot’s Commonwealth Cup.

His pedigree is an interesting one – his dam Sagely is a daughter of Frozen Power, an Oasis Dream half-brother to Finsceal Beo and the winner of the German 2,000 Guineas.

Sagely won over a mile and 1m2f and is a half-sister to the Listed Upavon Stakes second Sagaciously, dam of Listed Prix Pelleas winner Epic Poet.

Third dam Saga D’Ouilly is a full-sister to the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1) winner and sire Sagamix and to Sage Et Jolie, the dam of Group 1 winner Sageburg. She is also a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Sagacity and to Shastye, the dam of the Group 1-winning full-brothers Japan and Mogul, as well as Secret Gesture and Sir Isaac Newton.

Perfect Power is from the first crop of Ardad and is one of just two Group winners that he has sired with the other – Sirenia Stakes (G3) winner Eve Lodge – also from his first crop.

The first foals by Perfect Power were received positively by the market with 28 sold for an average price of 38,463gns with the median at 30,000gns.

Altenbach Bloodstock’s colt out of the Camelot mare Mutrecy was the only one to break into six-figures with Peter and Ross Doyle going to 130,000gns for the half-brother to winning two-year-old Char at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale.

Tattersalls was also the venue for the sale of Perfect Power’s most expensive daughter – Cobhall Court Stud’s half-sister to Group 3 Oh So Sharp and Athasi Stakes third Small Oasis. She made 78,000gns and was bought by Federico Barberini.

PERSIAN FORCE

ATOUGH AND A TALENTED JUVENILE who made a winning racecourse debut before his actual second birthday, Persian Force stands alongside his sire Mehmas at Tally-Ho Stud.

There are plenty of similarities between Persian Force and his sire, not least their race records and training establishments, although the son made it to the track earlier than his father.

He won the Brocklesby at Doncaster in late March whereas Mehmas made his winning debut at Chester in May.

On the back of his first two successful runs, Persian Force, like his father, ran in the Coventry Stakes (G2) at Royal Ascot.

The result for both father and son was the same – Persian Force finished second to Bradsell, the same slot that Mehmas had filled in that race behind Caravaggio.

Both horses gained their Group 2 victories in the July Stakes, their next start after Royal Ascot, and it is there where their paths diverged slightly. Persian Force went to The Curragh for the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes, where he found only Little Big Bear too good.

Blackbeard, a different son of No Nay Never, stood in his way at Deauville in the Prix Morny (G1), and he was third to him again in the Middle Park Stakes (G1), a race in which Mehmas

had also finished third. The Middle Park (G1) was the final race of his career for Mehmas, but Persian Force had one more run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint. In a dramatic late finish, he was forced out of second and into fourth in the dying yards.

Bred by trainer Tom Lacy, Persian Force is a year younger full-brother to Gubbass, who was third in the Richmond Stakes (G2) and in the Listed King Charles II Stakes. They are out of Vida Amorosa, an unraced daughter of Lope De Vega and a half-sister to the dam of Group 3 Prix de Meautry and Prix de Ris-Orangis winner Garrus, by Acclamation, who was also third in the Group 1 Prix Maurice de Gheest.

Top price of €68,000 was paid by Tally-Ho for a colt out of Princess Rose offered by Baroda Stud.

ex

(FR) (Fastnet Rock (AUS)) (14th March 2024)

https://www.harasdebeaumont.com/detail-etalon/Sealiway

AGroup 1 winner at two and three, Sealiway’s stallion career marked a major milestone for the Chehboub family’s involvement in bloodstock as he was the first stallion to stand at their Haras de Beaumont where he has been joined by champion three-year-old Ace Impact and Prix Jean Prat winner Puchkine, and to where Intello and Stunning Spirit relocated on the closure of Haras du Quesnay.

Sealiway is a product of Guy Pariente’s breeding programme and was bought by Paul Nataf for €62,000 as yearling from Haras de Colleville. He was out early at two, making a winning debut over 6f in May and then won over the same trip at Chantilly before finishing third to King’s Harlequin and Go Athletico in the Listed Prix Roland de Chambure.

He earned his Listed stripes at Vichy on his next start before splitting Go Athletico and Naval Crown in the Group 3 Prix la Rochette. On his first try at the top level he stepped up to win the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère, defeating Nando Parrado and Laws Of Indices on heavy ground at Paris Longchamp. He went on to show that was no fluke with his fifth place in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.

He started his three-year-old season with second in the Group 3 Prix de Fontainebleau and then was only 3l behind St Mark’s Basilica when eighth in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains (G1). Less than 2l separated the pair when first and second in the Prix du Jockey-Club (G1), with the 1m2f trip playing to Sealiway’s strengths.

In the Arc, on his next run and first at the 1m4f trip, he finished a close fifth to Torquator Tasso, Tarnawa, Hurricane Lane and Adayar and then added his second Group 1 with success in Ascot’s British Champions Stakes just 13 days’ later.

Switched to Francis-Henri Graffard for his four-year-old season, his best performances came when third behind State Of Rest in the Prix Ganay (G1) and second to Skaletti in the Group 2 Prix Harcourt.

Sealiway is the third foal out of the Listed Prix Herod winner Kensea, a daughter of Pariente’s remarkable sire Kendargent.

His younger full-brother Sunway was also a Group 1 winner at two, with success in the Criterium International at Saint-Cloud. Last year he was placed in the St Leger and Irish Derby for David Menuisier.

Kensea is the dam of four winners and she was the best horse in her family, which includes Tiger Roll all the way back under the fifth dam, for three generations until Sealiway emerged.

On the track, Galiway was a Listed winner at three and Group 3-placed but he has already outshone his own performances in his second career, producing three Group winners with two of them out of Kendargent mares.

From his first six crops he has produced 15 stakes winners, supplementing his Group 1 winners with Vauban, who is a Group 2 winner on the Flat and a Grade 1 winner over hurdles.

In total, 14 of Sealiway’s first crop were sold as foals with an average price of 18,019gns and the median significantly better at 19,048gns.

Top price came at Arqana for Haras de Tourgeville’s colt out of Rasca, an unraced Zarak full-sister to the Listed and Group 3-placed Rashford.

Salcey Forest Stud’s filly out of Tikitiki, a winning daughter of Fastnet Rock, brought 27,000gns at the December Foal Sale from Flyingbolt Bloodstock.

He filled the same position in the European Free Handicap on his seasonal reappearance the following spring and then was third in the Carnarvon Stakes (L).

He defeated subsequent Group 1 winner Space Blues to win Royal Ascot’s Group 3 Jersey Stakes and gave owner Steve Parkin of Clipper Logistics plenty to smile about when winning the Boomerang Stakes (G2), sponsored by his firm. At five, he won the mile Listed Ganton Stakes and was second in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile.

He moved across the Atlantic Ocean and to the barn of Brendan Walsh and as a six-year-old was placed in two further Grade 1 contests: the Pegasus Turf and the Frank E Kilroe Mile.

Sandra Russell consigned the daughter of True To Love, an Es Que Love half-sister to Group 2 winner First Cornerstone. She made €37,000 to TLK, and achieved the highest price for a first-crop filly by Space Traveller.

STATE OF REST

THE WINNER OF FOUR GROUP 1s in four different countries and in three different continents, State Of Rest’s stallion career is already a dual-hemisphere one, too, as he is part-owned by Newgate Stud and shuttles between Rathbarry and Australia.

One of eight Group 1 winners sired by Starspangledbanner, State Of Rest demonstrated toughness and talent in a 13-race career that began with success over 6f on debut at two for Joseph O’Brien, and a third in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster.

A sparse three-year-old campaign paid off spectacularly for State Of Rest, who began the season in Ireland by finishing third in the Listed Celebration Stakes at The Curragh on Irish Derby weekend and then went to Saratoga for the Grade 1 Derby, where he earned the first of his top-level victories.

An audacious Australian adventure was next on the cards yielding a narrow victory over Anamoe in the Cox Plate (G1), whose previous winners include the best of Australian horses such as quadruple heroine Winx.

His first start at four was at ParisLongchamp for the Prix Ganay (G1) in which he defeated Group 1 winners, including Sealiway, Mare Australis and Skaletti.

His fourth Group 1 win in a fourth different country came in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (G1) when he beat Bay Bridge, Grand Glory, Shahryar and Lord North to earn that fourth Group 1.

Dropped to a mile for the Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois, State Of Rest failed to fire on the final start of his racing career.

The five-year-old was bred by Tinnakill Bloodstock out of the Quiet American mare Repose and sold for 45,000gns as a foal to Diamond Bloodstock.

STRADIVARIUS

STRADIVARIUS ran 35 times over seven seasons, his racing career kicking off at two with three starts. In the second of those he finished fourth behind Cracksman in a Newmarket maiden before going on to Newcastle for an All-Weather maiden for the first of in his amazing career which yielded 20 victories.

He opened his three-year-old season with victory at Beverley, got off the mark on his Group race bow in the Queen’s Vase (G2), and then took on, and beat, the older horses in the Group 1 Goodwood Cup.

In the St Leger (G1), he finished third to Capri and Crystal Ocean and signed off for the season with third place in the British Champions Long Distance Cup.

His four-year-old season established a familiar pattern –victory in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup followed by the Ascot Gold Cup, then Goodwood and back to York for the Lonsdale Cup – with victories collected each time and a Weatherbys’ bonus collected along the way. He returned to Ascot for the Group 2 on Champions’ Day and won the race this time.

Next year it went like clockwork again – the same four races, the same results but with the addition of the Group 2 Doncaster

Cup. The winning streak eventually came to an end in the Long Distance Cup when he was bettered by Kew Gardens.

The pattern was changed up the following year. Stradivarius started the year in a Coronation Cup (G1) that was rerouted to Newmarket because of Covid – he finished third to Ghaiyyath and Anthony Van Dyck.

Further Group 1 glory awaited with his hat-trick in the Gold Cup and a fourth successive Goodwood Cup earning him a place in the pantheon of staying legends. He was sent to ParisLongchamp for the Prix Foy (G2) where he was second to Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck, while in the Arc, he finished seventh to Sottsass.

At seven, he went on to add further renewals of the Lonsdale (G2) and Doncaster Cups (G2) to his trophy cabinet and was second to Trueshan in the Group 1 Prix du Cadran and third behind that rival and Tashkhan in the Long Distance Cup.

In 2022, he won the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup and then was hampered when a length third to Kyprios and Mojo Star in Ascot’s Gold Cup. On what was to be his final run, he went out on his shield going down by a head to Kyprios at Goodwood.

THUNDER MOON

THE ROLL CALL of honour for the Group 1 National Stakes reads like a Who’s Who of equine celebrities and includes a number of notable stallions such as Danehill Dancer, Dubawi, Teoflo and New Approach. Haras de Boquetot will hope that the 2020 winner Thunder Moon will one day end up a stallion of the same quality.

Bred by Aidan and Anne Marie O’Brien’s Whisperview Trading, Thunder Moon hails from a branch of an outstanding Moyglare family tree through his third dam, the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Trusted Partner.

Trained by Joseph O’Brien, he was one of the best two-yearolds of his generation. He made a winning start in a 7f maiden at The Curragh and immediately was thrown in at the deep end, making his second start in the Group 1 National Stakes – Thunder Moon swam elegantly, winning from a field that included St Mark’s Basilica, Lucky Vega, MacSwiney and Laws Of Indices.

His third start of that campaign came in the Dewhurst Stakes (G1) – St Mark’s Basilica and Wembley turning the tables on Thunder Moon who finished third. He made six starts as a three-year-old and his best showing was in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat when a head second to Laws Of Indices.

At four, he ran four times and was second in a conditions race at Dundalk and third in the Group 3 Gladness Stakes at The Curragh.

Thunder Moon is a half-brother to the Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes winner Table Rock (Fastnet Rock), who was also second in the Listed Queen Mother Memorial Cup in Hong Kong. They are two of the three winners from four runners out of Small Sacrifice. She is an unraced Sadler’s Wells half-sister to the dam of Group 1 Criterium International winner Vert De Grece and to the dam of Group 3 Sirenia Stakes winner Love Lockdown (Verglas).

His second dam Trust In Luck is a Nashwan half-sister to the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes winner Dress To Thrill and to Polished Gem (Danehill), dam of Group 1 winners Kyprios, Free Eagle and Search For A Song as well as the Group winners Custom Cut, Sapphire and Valac and the Listed winners Amma Grace and Falcon Eight.

Thunder Moon is one of five individual Group 1 winners sired by the late Zoffany, who has had a lot of success with mares from the Green Desert line.

Five of the young stallion’s first crop sold with the median price a touch higher than the average. The median was 37,267gns while the average came in at 36,108gns.

His most expensive was Haras d’Etreham’s half-brother to the Group 3 Prix de Conde winner Shiffrin, who made €68,000 to MAB Agency at Arqana’s December Breeding Stock Sale.

Pegasus Bloodstock bought the highest-priced filly foal by Thunder Moon, a half-sister to triple Listed-placed Roquemont for €48,000 from Arcadia Elevage at Arqana.

TORQUATOR TASSO

TORQUATOR TASSO was a bargain buy for Gestüt Auenquelle at the 2018 BBAG October Yearling Sale when he was picked up for just €24,000.

Unraced at two, he began his career as a three-year-old for Marcel Weiss and gave early indications of his talent with a maiden success over 1m3f before running second to In Swoop in the Deutsches Derby (G1) and was then third to Barney Roy in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden before earning his first Group 1 victory in the Grosser Preis von Berlin. He ended his first season by finishing second in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Bayern.

At four, he resumed winning ways in the Group 2 Grosser Hansa Preis before bumping into Alpinista in the Grosser Preis von Berlin, a race that produced successive Arc winners in the pair. He beat that season’s Deutsches Derby winner Sisfahan in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden, which was the warm-up event for his Parisian triumph. His Arc victory saw him run down Group 1 winners Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane in the final furlong with Adayar, Sealiway, Snowfall and Chrono Genesis filling the next four positions.

His five-year-old season got off to a disappointing start in the Group 2 Grosser Preis der Badischen Wirtschaft, but he redeemed himself with success in the Group 2 Grosser Hansa Preis.

at Ascot was thwarted by Pyledriver but his second place earned Torquator Tasso huge plaudits.

He was then paired up with Frankie Dettori for the first time in the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden and he split Mendocino and the dual Group 1 winner Sammarco before a return to Paris and Longchamp’s crown jewel. He stayed on well from the back of the pack to be third, less than a length behind Alpinista and Vadeni.

He has the genes to be a successful stallion, hailing from one of Germany’s most outstanding families and inbred to the great Allegretta and her full-sister Alya.

Torquator Tasso’s dam Tijuana was bred by Gestüt Schlenderhann, who has cultivated this family over many generations.

She is a half-sister to the Group 2 Diana Trial winner Tusked Wings and the Group 3 Premio St Leger Italiano second Tangut, both by Torquator Tasso’s sire Adlerflug. Her other half-siblings include the Listed winner Tahini and the Listed-placed Titurel.

They are out of Tucana, a winning Acatenango half-sister to the five-time Group 3 winner and leading sire Tertullian, closely related to Urban Sea being by Miswaki and out of her half-sister Turbaine.

Tucana is also a half-sister to the Group 3 winner Terek and Tusculum by Sadler’s Wells, who won the Listed Ballycullen Stakes.

Torquator Tasso’s third dam is Turbaine, who was second in the Listed Prix Occitanie and is a Trempolino half-sister to the incredible Urban Sea. Adlerflug’s second dam Alya is a Lombard full-sister to Allegretta making Torquator Tasso inbred 4 x 5 to her dam Anatevka.

Adlerflug was beginning to gain wider recognition when he died at the start of the 2021 breeding season, and his loss has left a space in the industry which Auenquelle hopes to fill with his best son.

The chestnut is one of nine individual Group 1 winners sired by the Deutsches Derby and Deutschland Preis winner, who was a son of In The Wings, and the sire line has flourished in Germany through both Adlerflug and Soldier Hollow.

Just one foal from Torquator Tasso’s first crop was offered for sale and the filly, who is descended from Alouette, made 12,000gns to Isinglass Bloodstock at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, offered by Gestüt Westerberg.
