Aquatic China 2014 An Invitation to Join Aquatic China 2014 Aquaculture is playing an increasingly valuable role in providing food for our growing human population – and it’s output is increasing each year. Already food from aquaculture has surpassed that produced from wild caught fish and the variety of species now being farmed in captivity is expanding rapidly as well. Farmed fish are being more readily accepted by consumers.

Fish can be extremely efficient in converting feed to high-quality protein and growth rates are proving to be extremely impressive with just over one kg of feed being required to produce a kg of fish in salmon farming systems.

Behind this success is science. Research and development based on sound scientific training and qualification provides our industry with drive and determination to overcome obstacles that in other food sectors might have restricted progress. That foundation of knowledge based on science is key to the future prosperity of our industry.

For the first time ‘Aquatic China 2014’ is hosting an international two-day symposium for the fish farming industry in China, where scientific and commercial presenters from without and outside China can come together to exchange ideas and development in fish farming.

China, accounting for almost 85 percent of the world’s farmed fish production, is a perfect host for this important meeting which takes place in advance of the ‘VIV China Exposition’ from September 21-22, 2014 in Beijing. Brief Introduction to Aquatic China 2014 It is generally accepted that the only way to meet the increasing demand for fish and shrimp is through aquaculture. China has more than 3000 years of history in aquaculture. It is not only is a pioneer in aquaculture, but has also become the biggest aquaculture country, with an annual production accounting for more than 70% of global output. However, after recent 30 years of rapid development, China's aquaculture faces a series of challenges.

Lack of resources, the environmental deterioration and the safety of aquatic products are considered to be the most critical factors that impede the sustainability of China aquaculture.

Most challenges to the sustainable development of globe aquaculture are usually first faced by China.

China has still not been powerful in aquaculture, and should develop sustainable aquaculture as its own mission, learning from aquaculture powers, and from developed countries. Meanwhile, the rest of the world can also learn the methodologies and experiences from China to overcome these challenges. These challenges faced by China can also play a role in early warnings to other aquaculture countries.

Therefore, the "2014 China Aquaculture Summit" (Beijing), pre-held in the "2014 China International VIV", is an excellent communication platform for global peer experts to explore. issues of aquaculture sustainability. Ü Dr. Andreu Rico works as researcher in Alterra, which belongs to Wageningen University and Research

centre (The Netherlands). He is specialized on ecotoxicology and the environmental risk assessment of chemicals and has participated in several international projects in tropical countries of America and Asia.

As part of his PhD he studied the use and the environmental risks posed by aquaculture chemicals in Asia, with focus on China, Vietnam, Bangladesh and Thailand. For this, he and co-workers performed chemical use interviews in aquaculture farms, developed models for specific aquaculture production scenarios, and monitored the environmental pollution and effects caused by aquaculture medicines. Andreu Rico is (co-) author of 10 scientific papers and several reports for the EU and is an active member of SETAC (Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry).

2011.7-2014.7, I worked as an Assistant Researcher at Freshwater fisheries research center of Chinese academy of fishery sciences. In recent years, I have committed myself to aquatic animal nutrition and feed formulation technology, mainly focused on protein and amino acids nutrition and metabolic mechanisms in aquatic animal species. I have also published more than 12 SCI papers on the leading magazine, such as Aquaculture, Aquaculture nutrition and Aquaculture research.

2014.7-present, I’m work as aquaculture technology manager of health and nutrition department of North Asia, Evonik Industries, responsible for study of amino acids nutrition and physiology for aquatic animal species and technology promotion work. Ü Dr Zhenyu Du - is presenting progress in studies on lipid metabolism and regulation in fish. The shortage of fish oil as dietary lipid source, together with severe fat accumulation in most of farmed fish, have become the main factors to restrict the sustainable development of modern aquaculture in the world, especially in China. Therefore, an urgent task for either scientists or feed industries is to draw optimal nutritional strategies to decrease the usage of fish oil in formulated diets, while still maintain high edible quality of farmed fish.

However, this goal is impossible to achieve except people could understand thoroughly the mechanisms of lipid metabolism in fish. This is also the reason why lipid study has been being a hot topic during recent dozens of years. The present up-to-date lecture summarizes the publications related to fish lipid metabolism during the last five years, and introduces the main research content and development during recent years.

The main results include: - 1) A clear definition of the concept of aquaculture mode and pass through; the system of scientific research has established a new model of aquaculture - fish, mussels diverse freshwater ponds integrated model. Currently, the new model has been in Zhejiang and Jiangxi Province freshwater pearl farming production validation and promotion 2) Proposal to replace fishmeal feed evaluation criteria; the main plant protein material, anti-nutritional factors for a variety of proteins and the limiting role of micronutrients for alternative feed fishmeal. The establishment of a variety low fishmeal feed formula for carnivorous fish, including ovatus, sea perch, drumshaped yellow croaker, grouper, Japanese croaker, large yellow croaker and largemouth bass 3) To study the growth of warm water fish, evaluate the feasibility of using compensatory growth improved tilapia, silver carp and drum, croaker-like feeding strategy. Dr Wang Yan has more than 100 articles of which two won invention patents.

Ü Professor Simon Davies - Professor Simon Davies - holds a Chair in Aquaculture Nutrition within the School of Biosciences, Plymouth University and heads the Fish Nutrition & Aquaculture Health Research Group. He is an acknowledged international expert in the nutrition of farmed fish species having served his University for 27 years since 1986. He is the Editor-in-Chief of International Aqua Feed magazine and serves on the editorial board of numerous scientific journals involving fish nutrition and related health research.

Professor Davies was awarded his Bachelors’ Degree in Biochemistry at Cardiff University in 1978 and subsequently obtained a Masters’ Degree in Animal Nutrition at Newcastle University followed by a Doctorate at the Institute of Aquaculture in Stirling.

Professor Davies has had extensive experience of the aquaculture industry throughout the world and works closely with major fish feed manufacturers in developing sustainable and improved feed formulations. He has supervised over 27 students to PhD level and over 150 Masters students’ with many now working in the various aquaculture science disciplines.

Ü Dr Yu Yu - began his academic career at the National Chung-Hsing University, Taichung, Taiwan where

he gained his undergraduate degree in Animal Husbandry in 1968. He moved to Michigan, USA for his post graduate studies, completing a PhD in Dairy Science in 1974.

After graduation, he worked at the University of Guelph, Canada as a research associate and then as director of research and development at the United Co-operatives of Ontario.

In 1992, Dr Yu Yu moved to Hong Kong to take up the role of Asia regional director, technical services, at Ralston Purina International before moving to the National Renderers Association in 1996.

At present he is the director of East Bright Consulting in Hong Kong and the USA. Dr Yu Yu is also an associate editor for International Aquafeed magazine.

Ü Kangsen Mai - of Ocean University of China, Qingdao, Shangdong, China will be presenting

‘Sustainability of China Aquaculture and Aquafeed Industry’.

This report briefly reviewed the development history and present status of aquaculture and aquafeed industry in China. It analyzed the factors restricting the sustainable development of China aquaculture and aquafeed industry. Farming space, water supply and quality, supply of feed raw materials, and product safety of aquaculture are considered to be the most critical factors that impede the sustainability of China aquaculture and aquafeed industry. It is pointed out that aquaculture and aquafeed industry is in an inflection point of development pattern, and also put forward the strategic thinking for the sustainable development of aquaculture and aquafeed industry in China.

progress in studies on endocrine regulation of fish growth. Growth is a polygenic trait resulting from a multitude of physiological pathways regulating energy metabolism and muscle growth. Among the many possible growthregulating pathways in vertebrates, signals within the somatotropic endocrine axis, including growth hormone (GH)/insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) and their up- and down-regulatory factors, associated carrier proteins, and receptors, are known to play key roles in the regulation of metabolism and physiological processes.

Compared with the vast amounts of knowledge generated for mammalian models and livestock, the understanding of the mechanisms of the endocrine regulation on fish growth is still relatively in its infancy. Recently, we took the advantages of model organisms like zebrafish as our major model for endocrine studies. Utilizing gene-specific knock-down technique with morpholino oligos (MOs), gene over-expression transgenic fish, and transcription activator-like effector nucleases (TALENs) for gene targeting, we have studied several key signals in somatotropic endocrine axis, such as ghrelin, somatostatin receptor, IGF-1, myostatin, and prolactin, in our in vivo models. Our studies demonstrated that the overall phenotypes resulted from single signal in our in vivo models may be the result of the effects of multiple intrinsic factors, such as endocrine/autocrine signals, the flow of nutrients, the rates of metabolic processes, and energy budgets. At last, the interactions between the somatotropic endocrine axis and reproductive endocrine axis and their effects on fish growth have been explored.

Sciences and is presenting on fish gut microflora and its interactions. The risks of using lactic acid bacteria, especially highly adhesive gut Lactobacillus sp. and Bacillus sp.

In practical aqua feed is arising; 1. The resistance ability to bacterial pathogens is possibly broken after cease of the dietary incorporation of Lactobacillus sp.

2. The substances involved in the anti- bacteria activity of Bacillus sp. is speculated to be mainly antibiotics by the analysis of antibiotics and secondary metabolite Analysis Shell (Anti-SMASH).

How to avoid these risks? The impetus might be to explore and industrialise the probiotic components instead of live probiotics. Finally, several potential probiotics components are to be introduced in detail.

- has graduated his PhD at the INRA in France on fish reproduction endocrinology in 1995 and then did his Post Doc researches at the NTOU Keelung, Taiwan, department of aquaculture. Later on he worked in the shrimp industry in Thailand as managing director of the Shrimp Biotechnology (SBBU) Business and consulting for different companies. For the last 5 years he has been acting as aquaculture market Manager for Lesaffre Feed Additives, developing new applications for yeast products in the aquafeed industry.

Ü Michiel Fransen - Standards and Certification Coordinator. From export manager at Coppens International BV where he spent two years where he wa a specialist in fish feeds for aquaculture farmers, Dr Fransen moved to the Aquaculture Stewardship Council in July 2012. He says most seafood species that are farmed need feed in order to complete their growing cycle. But while feed is an essential element in fish farming, it is also a major contributor to the overall environmental impact of aquaculture. This is because the production of some of the key ingredients used in making feed itself creates environmental pressures that need to be addressed urgently.

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is developing a project to tackle this problem. It will create a new, globally applicable, ASC Feed Standard. The Standard will set out the requirements for the aquaculture feed industry to operate on a more environmentally sound and socially responsible basis. The project will introduce consistency into the way in which the aquaculture feed industry has been asked to address sustainability and social responsibility issues concerning feed. The project will be undertaken over three years and is expected to be financed by interested Foundations and the aquaculture industry.

Ü Dr Brett Glencross - is a Senior Principal Research scientist for Aquaculture Feed Technologies research

within the Aquaculture Research Program of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organisation (CSIRO) in Australia.

He has Honours and Masters Degrees in Biochemistry from the University of Western Australia and a PhD in animal nutrition from the University of Queensland. Over the past 20 years he has worked in Australia, China, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, France, Canada and Scotland.

He has worked closely with many major international aquaculture feed companies throughout Australia, Asia and Europe. He is one of the editors of the journal Aquaculture Nutrition and also on the Editorial Boards for the British Journal of Nutrition, Journal of Nutritional Sciences and the Journal of Aquaculture and Fisheries. Additionally he is Deputy Chair of the Scientific Commitee of the International Society for Fish Nutrition and Feeding (ISFNF), and Chair of the Organising Commitee for the recent 2014 ISFNF Conference in Australia. His current research activities span the use of bioactives in feeds, the development of functional feeds for animal health, refining our knowledge on essential amino acid and fatty acid requirements, use of nutritional modelling strategies and refining raw material evaluation. His current work is based on species such as Asian seabass, salmonids, Tilapia, grouper, cobia, lobster and shrimp.

Ü JunBin Chai - South China Agricultural University graduate aquaculture direction, a former deputy director of a large sea Hinter technology systems, Kangdaer Group, Assistant to the President and other staff, is now director of marketing for Atech Biotechnology Co., Ltd. of Guangdong. In the original feed Materials technology and formula optimization, positioning and marketing promotion terminal aquatic training management, enterprise technology and aquatic feed. Many aspects of marketing has a wealth of experience, aquaculture is a real home. Ü Dr Manuela Parini f Cusago has worked as marketing director and a research and development team member for Silo SpA near Milano, Italy for the past 14 years with responsibility for the company’s global sales network.

Papers and presentation she has made include: “Effect of specific mix of monoglycerides and diglycerides of short-medium chain fatty acids in fattening pigs diets to control swine dysentery” – IPVS Congress 2014, Mexico; “Challenges and new tendencies in use of lipids for animal nutrition – Focus on Short-to-Medium Chain Fatty Acids and Monoglycerides” - 2009, April, Feedinfo; “Socio-Economic Impact of the Application of Recycled Fatty Materials in Commercial Feed” - 2008, April, Feedinfo and “Socio-economic impact of the use of fat co- and by-products in feeds” - 2007 in a study published on the web-site of the EU-project “Feeding Fat Safety” (http:// www.ub.edu/feedfat/documents.htm).

Dr Parini has also participated as speaker at Sichuan Agricolture University Symposium in April 2012 with the research “Intestinal Health: Effects of Lactobutyrin (Butyric acid Monoglyceride) on villus growth and control of enteric bacteria.”

She was an expert and a speaker at the 1st International Workshop “COST Action Fa0802 – Feed For Health” also held in Milano in March 2009, with the research title “Challenges and new tendencies in use of lipids for animal nutrition.”

Through her company she participated in an EU-project called “Feeding Fat Safety.” The project, coordinated by the Barcelona University, was aimed at improving the safety level of fatty by-products and derivates to be used in commercial feeds.

The Silo SpA “Work-Package” included the analysis of the industrial processes commonly used for the production and processing of lipids and the identification of technological improvements to avoid risks of degradation/ contaminations in lipids and derivatives to be used in feeds.
