DENVER WATER

orial Advert

Aurora man sues DIA after his fall causes brain injury

the campaign came to a close in 2015, Denver Water customers’ water usage had dropped 22% compared with usage before the drought, the utility said. Rose Bythrow lives near the “watering hole” billboard and can’t help but chuckle every time she passes. She saw the campaign making the social media rounds and joined in the revelry in the comment section. “I was a little bit confused, and then I saw other iterations of the billboard and advertisements in the mail, and I thought it was RJ SANGOSTI — THE DENVER POST honestly so funny,” Bythrow said in a phone inter- One of Denver Water’s new marketing billboards is seen near Sheridan Boulevard and view. “I work in marketing West 52nd Avenue on Thursday in Denver. … the point of advertising is to catch people’s attention, and it does that, so I hope ONLINE that their marketing team is in on the joke. Honestly, I like the campaign … I don’t know if it’s bringing more attention to the fact that we need to use less water EVERGREEN, COLORADO or just the fact that Denver Water made a funny mar3 BUILDING LUXURY COMPOUND ON 30.01± ACRES keting campaign.” Any exposure to the issue is good, said Mike Sukle, owner of Sukle Advertising & Design. He appreciates that the campaign is causing waves. “I think about how utilities communicate with people. They don’t do it like Denver Water,” Sukle said. “Denver Water has always had a little bit of humor. If they can go out and make people notice their message, PREVIOUSLY LISTED - $7.9M // STARTING BID - $3M people are going to do it. … We track sentiment online, ONLINE AUCTION BEGINS MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH and it’s been very positive for the ‘Use Only What You (866) 264-0668 (866) 8 Need’ campaign. People are engaging with it. It’s fun. parent company of CBS. To secure FCC approval for the merger, Skydance agreed to end CBS’ diversity policies and appoint a monitor for news bias. (Trump has since shown a rooting interest in the Ellisons’ attempt to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns CNN.) Critics, among them FCC leaders from past Republican administrations, have said Carr is exceeding his authority. Carr says he is simply following the law by requiring broadcasters to serve the public interest in ways that he says his predecessors had failed to do. Trump is clearly pleased with Carr’s effort to solve the so-called fake news problem, as he put it in a speech in April at a private White House event before the celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary. “He’s keeping these crooked networks honest,” Trump said as he spotted Carr in the crowd, describing his appointee as “the most powerful man in the world.” After Trump recently called for punishment of NBC host Kristen Welker for reporting he did not like, and suggested FCC action against the airing of “fake polls,” Carr responded by saying the agency was considering “a lot of actions,” including on “fake polls.” No network has borne the brunt of the president’s ire as much as ABC, which is owned by The Walt Disney Co. Trump’s animus against ABC grew in 2024, when he sued over anchor George Stephanopoulos’ characterization of the verdict in the defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll, who accused Trump of sexual abuse. ABC settled the suit for $15 million. In the president’s second term, his anger has increased as ABC late-night comic Jimmy Kimmel has made him the regular butt of jokes. Last year, the FCC opened an investigation into the network’s diversity and inclusion hiring policies and revived a conservative group’s complaint over ABC’s 2024 presidential debate.

Early this year, the agency sought to require its talk show “The View” to follow so-called equal-time rules for political candidates, even though the FCC previously agreed that the show qualified for an exemption. In April, after Trump and the first lady demanded ABC fire Kimmel over a joke he made about her being an “expectant widow,” the FCC started an early review of the federal licenses that ABC stations need to operate, years before they are set to expire. The agency had never brought such a mass challenge to a major network’s station licenses. It said it was doing so because ABC was deficient in its responses to the diversity and inclusion inquiry. ABC is now fighting the agency’s actions, which it called “deeply un-American.” The network has asked a federal court to intervene immediately, arguing that Carr effectively was using the agency’s enforcement process to wage a “retaliatory campaign” that is negatively affecting its programming decisions. Out of fear of retaliation, ABC decided to carry live online a primetime speech that Trump gave on election security, which it would not have done otherwise, and avoided certain bookings and video clips on “The View,” the network said in court papers. It also reported onerous FCC demands for documents, including staff communications from inside “The View” and internal ABC News editorial policies. “It’s unprecedented to seek these records because they are part of the editorial decision-making,” Anna Gomez, the lone Democratic FCC commissioner, said in an interview. “It’s all a strategy, and tools, to intimidate broadcasters into submission.” Carr has called ABC’s suit meritless. This month, the FCC moved to get the case dismissed, arguing ABC was simply trying to short-circuit an agency investigation while exaggerating harms to its speech rights.
