Applaud the strong words The importance of HGV licences, the need for trading standards officials to have the means, and AI for stores Traffic Commissioners for Great Britain deputy traffic commissioners have never before been quoted in Interiors Monthly, but the strong – but honestly held – words of Mark Hinchcliffe (see p10) have to be applauded.

He refused to grant an HGV licence, thereby severely curtailing the company’s ability to function, after its director was involved with a string of insolvencies. The director in this case had done nothing legally wrong, but the deputy traffic commissioner was far from convinced there had not been abusive practices. Perhaps HGV licences will be to those behind phoenix companies what income tax was to Al Capone.

Andy Burnham says that he wants to take action against retail rip-offs. While no-one can object to such an aim, the elephant in the room is, always, enforcement. While the CMA prefers to take civil action, and the ASA is kept occupied by bed and fitted furniture companies, neither is able to do much for consumers where dubious pricing and practices are taking place at a local level. This is what Trading Standards officers did before departments across the country had their budgets slashed. If the PM wants to make a difference, give them back the means.

Dunelm’s introduction of its AI shop assistant app caused me to think if the technology could be rolled out across the sector.

We’ve all known, or worked with, people who have no real shop-floor skills and are possibly more of a hindrance than a help to the business. Bring in AI and there’ll be no more wrong or misplaced orders that never reach the supplier, no days off sick, paid holidays or wages. I can already hear people say furniture and flooring products have too many options and are too complicated for a microchip to deal with, but they said that about cars.

Six weeks and more after Headlam’s strategic review began, shareholders are still no wiser whether or not the vital funds will be found. The continued delay isn’t doing it any good.

Cooper returns amid Tetrad deal Janus Copper, former Tetrad owner, has returned to the upholstery manufacturer as part of MBO. Chris Fletcher, Tetrad md; Luke Stenchion, Tetrad finance director, Cooper and Ryan McNeish have secured the MBO from Blandford Capital, with a consortium of investors.

‘This marks a hugely exciting new chapter for Tetrad after a challenging few years within the Belfield group. The investment and new ownership give us the confidence and freedom to accelerate our ambitions, while staying true to the values that have defined the business for decades,’ says Fletcher.

‘We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our customers, suppliers and our dedicated team, whose commitment has helped us reach this point. Together, we look forward to building on Tetrad’s reputation for exceptional craftsmanship, quality and design, while creating exciting new opportunities for the future.’

The company says the buyout is ‘backed with significant investment, enabling Tetrad to build on its existing success while accelerating future opportunities across product development, manufacturing and continued growth of the brand.’

In June the company announced a management overhaul, with Fletcher being promoted from commercial director, succeeding former ceo Tom Prestwich, Stenchion joining and Rowena Allen promoted to head of sales and marketing.

The MBO transaction includes Clinchplain Foam & Fibre, which will continue with its existing structure and leadership.

Magnet prepares for second round of closures Magnet is preparing to close another quarter of its stores as it tries to return to the black. Having closed 15 of its 159 branches, a further 39 have been earmarked for possible closure, depending on the outcome of negotiations with landlords.

Sophie Rose, Magnet chief executive says it has too many large stores that are too expensive to run. Talks with landlords are expected to reach a conclusion within weeks, with Rose keen to focus on smaller units. ‘It’s much more intimate. It’s much more about having that kind of personal experience and feel when you come into the showroom. It’s got creative spaces, it’s got kitchens on display. It’s amazing how many kitchens you can get on display still in these small showrooms,’ she says.

The store closure programme began under the chain’s former owner Nobia, before it concluded that turning around Magnet’s fortunes was placing too much of a drag on the rest of the kitchen group.

Owner Alteri Investors, which took over Magnet in January, has speeded up the process as it looks to restore profitability in 2027. Alteri also owns Bensons for Beds.

Dunelm turns to AI shopping assistant

Dutch sale, upturn, no sale Headlam has sold its operations in The Netherlands, seen an upturn in July trading and ruled out selling its Coleshill head office.

The Dutch business has been sold for €850,000 but this has been cut by €170,000 of costs. The proceeds will be used on general expenditure.

The group has ruled out the head office sale as part of its ongoing strategic review designed to raise funds. The group’s existing borrowing package is dependent on the value of its assets, including freehold properties.

Shareholders were told sales rose 3.5% in July, although the previous month had been down by more than a fifth on 2025.

Dunelm has debuted an AI shopping assistant that allows shoppers to search for products, receive recommendations and see products through natural conversation.

Customers can use the Ask Dunelm app to describe what they are looking for, ask questions about products and receive suggestions.

The iOS app can also help plan a room, find a specific product or explore inspiration without using traditional keyword searches, using Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience technology.

‘Ask Dunelm represents a significant step up in how customers can discover our products. Customers increasingly expect digital experiences that are intuitive and tailored to their needs,’ says John Gahagan, Dunlem chief technology and information officer.

Corby set for 2027 bow as sales leap amid investor demand Likewise has begun fitting out its 60,000sqft distribution centre in Corby after it raised more than £29m from shareholders amid strong summer trading.

Operations at the £9.57m freehold East Midlands unit are expected to begin in January. This, combined with the extensions at Newport and Derby, creates 50% more storage, cutting and processing capacity.

The institutional and retailer share offers were oversubscribed, with the flooring distributor raising more funds than initially planned, even after fees of more than £3m.

‘Both order intake and invoicing in August have started strongly, providing the group with increased impetus as we approach the traditionally busier Autumn trade,’ it says.

Sales in July were 23.9% higher, with the year now ahead by 18.3%.

Tony Brewer, Likewise chief executive says the fundraising and existing support ‘provides the group with sufficient capital to maximise the various opportunities in the UK flooring market,’ adding: ‘This is another very important

step in the development of Likewise Group. Poltronesofa eyes a return to the black Poltronesofa is on course to return to the black for the first time in three years, according to the 97-branch upholstery chain.

Gross sales were almost static at £253.5m in 2025, despite the refurbishmentrelated disruption as the Poltronesofa branding replaced ScS and the store

format roll-out was completed.

The company says it saw a ‘materially improved’ financial performance in 2025, and expects to make an operating profit for 2026, followed by a major profit improvement in 2027. Gross margin rose from 47.4% to 49.4%, thanks to the revamped product offer, sourcing changes and

reduced discounting.

‘After adjusting for the impact of temporary store closures and one-off integration costs, the 2025 financial result was close to breakeven,’ it says.

The company has yet to file its accounts with Companies House.

bought the cash-rich ScS in January 2024.

Licence refused over ‘classic Phoenix Syndrome’ concerns

A furniture manufacturer has been refused an HGV operator’s licence over ‘classic Phoenix Syndrome’ concerns.

Mark Hinchliffe, Traffic Commissioners for Great Britian deputy traffic commissioner refused the application by Valiant Furniture (NW), saying several companies controlled

by Valiant’s director Samuel Urmston had entered insolvency with significant debts. Successive companies, which previously held operator licences, accumulated deficiencies ranging from hundreds of thousands of pounds to almost £1m before new businesses were established and continued trading under similar names.

‘It is apparent to me that the controlling director intentionally or negligently took a number of business entities into insolvency, leaving behind large unpaid debts, then almost immediately started (or continued) virtually identical businesses under slightly altered corporate names.

In short, this is classic “Phoenix Syndrome”,’ he said.

After an inquiry, open to the public and which Urmston took part in, the deputy traffic commissioner said he did not believe Urmston’s claims for the reasons the companies failed, saying Urmston had ‘jumped on a couple of wellknown and convenient bandwagons but these, in my

judgement, do not come anywhere near explaining the massive debts owed to lots of different trade creditors, or the long-term and repeated failures, time after time, to pay PAYE deductions, NI contributions, and VAT to HMRC – as all Mr Urmston’s competitors, suppliers and customers will have had to do.’

Hinchliffe acknowledged that Urmston had not been disqualified from acting as a director, had not been the subject of any known relevant convictions and that there had been no recorded regulatory action against the previous operator licences. Urmston also appeared to have sufficient financial resources for a two-vehicle restricted licence.

However, he ruled that: ‘Given my impressions of the evidence, the substantial sums involved, the damage these unpaid debts must have done to a catalogue of other small businesses, the loss to public funds and, crucially, the thrice repeated process of incorporating a new company with a similar name, insolvency of the old company, liquidation, and then the continuation of the business without its accumulated debts under the replacement company, I find – on balance – that this is indeed an example of an abusive practice.’

Fly tipping sees pizza bill hit £20,000 A takeaway pizza order has cost a Burley furniture company almost £21,000 after it fly-tipped waste in the grounds of a hospital.

EMM Furniture was found guilty at Burnley Magistrates Court of dumping the waste in the grounds of Royal Blackburn Hospital, and was

fined £20,000 and ordered to pay £539 in costs and £354 in compensation for clearing it.

Blackburn with Darwen Council received an anonymous report from a member of the public, who provided a photo showing two people fly-tipping waste from a van

at the hospital. A takeaway pizza receipt with EMM Furniture’s address was found among the waste. When council officers visited the company’s Ruskin Street, Burnley premises – more than 12miles from the hospital – they found matching waste bags and the van used in the offence.

MattressNextDay hits recycling milestone MattressNextDay has recycled its 100,000th mattresses, after lifting its recycling rate to 41% since the scheme was launched in 2015.

This saves an estimated 4,000tonnes of bulky waste from landfill.

The £39 recycling scheme sees Matt UK deconstruct the mattress by hand, and more than 93% of materials recovered for recycling.

Investment in the future Unilin scores EcoVadis Gold medal after dramatic improvement Unilin has dramatically increased its environmental and sustainability performance and secured a EcoVadis Gold medal.

The flooring to panels group saw its EcoVadis score jump from 64 – worth a Bronze designation in 2025 – to 81, to secure the accolade. The improvement places the group among the top 5% of 90,000 companies assessed by EcoVadis, which examines environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement activities. Unilin improved its rating across all the categories.

The award reflects years of investment across the business. In 2021, Unilin developed the first industrial-scale technology capable of recycling MDF, HDF and laminate, which were previously considered impossible to recycle. More recently, the company also invested in recycling technologies for PIR insulation boards, helping to keep raw materials in circulation and reduce reliance on virgin resources.

Matter of principle Recognising people as human beings and taking time to ensure that proper communication takes place

It was a surprise to be called on to inspect a fitted kitchen, especially when the brief said the issue was simply that the integrated fridge and freezer doors did not close properly. Apparently, for a long time, the customer had even had to prop the freezer door shut with a chair, it just would not stay closed on its own.

Surely, I thought, this would be a fitting issue and the retailer or installer would pick it up easily and never allow it to become a potential court claim. Then I reminded myself of some of the many times when what I found on site was not how it had been reported, and that it is not wise to pre-judge any issue.

I called the customer. No answer. I called again in the evening. No answer.

I checked the paperwork and found an email address, so I sent the customer a message. The response was immediate and the appointment was confirmed.

When I arrived at the customer’s home a few days later, I was met at the door by her husband. He gave me some background and then told me the real issue was not the kitchen, it was the poor communication that had made it extremely frustrating for his wife, Chloe (not her real name, of course).

As if on cue, Chloe came into the kitchen. She looked directly at her husband and spoke. As she did, she signed her words. I realised she was deaf and so signed as she spoke, and also needed to look directly at anyone who was talking to her so she could lip-read to help her understanding.

Please don’t think I am in any way suggesting I am fluent in sign language, but I have taken a few lessons. I became a charity trustee a few years ago and we have some deaf volunteers working with us, so although I don’t often get to meet them, I feel it’s a way to relate. It needs

a lot of practice, but I have found that signers are always delighted to help anyone who tries to communicate with them – even bad signing is welcomed – and their responses will be signed in a way that helps with understanding.

I remembered the sign for ‘hello’. It brought a grin to her face, a sigh of relief, and a torrent of sign language well beyond my level, but she spoke along with it so I was able to understand her clearly even though her speech revealed that she could not hear herself speaking.

It became one of the most memorable inspections I have ever done. I learned that Chloe knew that her husband would have been able to deal with the retailer and fitter very easily, but this had become a matter of principle because neither of them made any attempt to accommodate her needs and her wish to deal with this matter herself.

The doors were not a big deal and could be sorted fairly easily, but the

complaint had become an enormous issue. The retailer and installer were themselves sort of deaf: unable to understand her needs and adjust so that she felt properly heard. Chloe had battled on to prove she could do it, and was ready to go as far as necessary because of the lack of consideration that had been given to her.

I didn’t need to do much signing (to be honest, I couldn’t have, anyway) but in the half-hour or so I was with Chloe and her husband I learned a valuable lesson. Making ‘reasonable adjustments’ isn’t just providing access ramps and accessible toilets, it’s about recognising people as human beings and taking time to ensure proper communication takes place – and not just until we’ve taken their money.

‘A genuine dialogue between a designer of Pakistani heritage and a Singaporean design brand built at the crossroads of cultures, the collection carries a bold design ethos that knows exactly where it comes from and is not afraid to show it,’ says the etailer’s co-founder Declan Ee. ‘Castlery was built in Singapore: a city that has always made something new from the meeting of many worlds. When we met Tan, we recognised that same story in him. This collection is what two outsiders, at home between different worlds, made together. We wanted something more than just a celebrity figure: we went looking for someone

whose life was the brief. Tan France is that person and this collection is the proof.’

The Anaya tea table is designed for slower, informal moments and crosslegged conversion inspired by France’s own family gatherings, largely centred around tea. His cultural influence manifests itself in the pillar-like elements echoed in the Kagan sofa’s armrests and the table’s legs. Subtle, carved solid oak detailing is reminiscent of the patterns found throughout South Asian design, while their substantial presence reinforces the reference to pillars, a central element of the region’s and British architecture.

The Tarin side and drinks tables draw inspiration from traditional woodturning, while the Rumi accent chair reimagines vintage-inspired forms through a soft,

rounded silhouette defined by a low profile and chunky legs. The solid oak Avan dining range has sculptural panel legs and rounded edges to create a sense of warmth and approachability. It reflects France’s belief that dining spaces should feel elevated and welcoming, serving as the backdrop for everything from casual family meals to larger celebrations.

The name Barley refers to the grain of the jute threads that run through the rug, with a nod to the natural, golden tone. The relationship between these two parts has inspired the Ushin and Mushin rugs by Carpet Edition, designed

by Setsu and Shinobu Ito of Studio Ito, manifesting through a system of signs and symbols that become an authentic expression of this bond.

Ushin is the heart that perceives its own essence in the depths of the self, finding its reason for being in the concept of Sabi: the silent beauty that surfaces from the passage of time and the natural transformation of things.

In this, the imperfections that ennoble the object, and the ‘repairs’, celebrate the authenticity of existence.

Piero Lissoni’s original 2020 design was reinvented as Alberese XL in 2024, as DePadova marked its 90th anniversary.

Now the Urban variant has seen Lissoni strive for a version more suited to homes than hotels. The height has been reduced by ¾in and the seat cushion almost reaches the floor: XL has just a c3cm gap to the floor.

The fillings have also been changed: XL uses goose down over a foam core, while Urban has polyester wadding to better help the cushions keep their shape. Despite the change, Urban is exceeding comfortable, and retaining the 103cm seat depth (including the back), the challenge can be getting out while retaining one’s dignity!

The soft covers of the Interiors Monthly Awards’ Product of the Year (Furniture) are removable, and it has leather options. It includes linear modules,

angled elements and small stand-alone islands, but the two curved units from XL have gone.

Transformation Kaymed has invested more than £3m Kaymed has completed a £3m transformation programme designed to accelerate innovation, strengthen manufacturing capabilities and deliver greater value for customers and consumers. A new Laader Berg Maxfoam continuous PU foam pour line has been installed at the company’s Dublin foam manufacturing facility. The £2.7m investment introduces advanced automation, real-time monitoring and enhanced production traceability, creating one of the most technologically advanced flexible foam manufacturing environments in the region.

The new equipment delivers improved product consistency, enhanced quality assurance and greater manufacturing efficiency, enabling Kaymed to further expand its portfolio of Fusion comfort foams. The investment will also reduce waste streams by almost 2% and lower energy consumption by about 3.6%.

A further £350,000 investment in C3 Technology foam block compression and roll-packing equipment strengthens Kaymed’s sustainability and logistics capabilities. By significantly reducing shipping volumes, with up to eight times better load yields, the technology improves transport efficiency, lowers carbon emissions and enables more sustainable movement of products throughout the supply chain.

The big three The expanded Monaco will be on show at three UK exhibitions Award-winning German bedroom manufacturer Wiemann is exhibiting a new addition to its popular Monaco system of contemporary bedroom furniture this autumn. Opportunity Asking better questions and explaining sleep wellness more clearly are key Consumers do not need convincing that sleep matters.

While Purecare’s UK Sleep Study found that almost everyone considers sleep to be important to overall wellbeing, it showed a clear gap between recognising the importance of sleep and understanding how to improve it.

Overheating remains one of the most common problems, with 60% of study respondents saying they regularly become too hot during the night.

Stress and anxiety affect almost half of those surveyed, while nearly 70% identified themselves as side sleepers, reinforcing just how important the right pillow and support can be.

The research also highlighted a major opportunity around mattress protection.

A third of consumers say they do not use a mattress protector. When those using non-waterproof products are included, more than 80% may not be adequately protecting their mattress.

Doing more Consumers want more than a focus on comfort The expectations placed on sleep products are changing. Comfort remains fundamental, but increasingly it is only one part of the equation. Consumers are becoming more aware of the role temperature, airflow, pressure relief, moisture management and long-term support can play in the quality of their sleep. That means the modern sleep surface has to do more than simply feel comfortable at first touch.

The next generation of British design will take centre stage at New Furniture Makers What does the future of British furniture look like? On 4 November, about 100 emerging designers and makers will offer their answers as the New Furniture Makers exhibition returns for its annual celebration of creativity, craftsmanship and contemporary furniture design.

Staged across Furniture Makers’ Hall and the Dutch Church in the City of London, the exhibition – organised by The Furniture Makers’ Company and sponsored by Benson for Beds brand Staples & Co – brings together graduates and rising talent from universities, colleges and design schools across the UK. For retailers, interior designers and specifiers, it offers an opportunity to discover original ideas before they reach the mainstream. For participants, such as Michiel Vrenegoor, it can be the start of an unexpected professional journey.

Fresh from graduating from the Chippendale International School of Furniture, Vrenegoor exhibited two pieces at NFM in 2024, including his Fisher Desk. The piece not only received a Highly Commended award but also attracted the attention of Heal’s.

‘I didn’t think too much of it at the time. I assumed it probably wouldn’t lead to anything,’ he says. Instead, it was the catalyst for his first commercial collaboration. Heal’s put the Fisher

Desk into production, with Vrenegoor paid a sales-based royalty.

‘I couldn’t be happier. It has been a very exciting journey, from the initial conversation at the exhibition through to seeing the finished product in production,’ he says. Today Vrenegoor runs his own bespoke furniture business, Fidra Furniture, and tutors at CISF. NFM has earned a reputation for presenting work that balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary thinking. Sustainability, material innovation, circular design and changing lifestyles increasingly shape the conversations surrounding pieces on display. This is what Sonnaz Nooranvary, House of Sonnaz founder and sponsor of the Textiles and Upholstery awards hopes to discover this year.

‘I’m looking forward to seeing the variety of ideas and approaches that come from a new generation of makers.

I’m particularly interested in how they’re combining traditional skills with contemporary thinking, and in seeing the different ways they’re responding to materials, sustainability and how we live today,’ she says. ‘I hope they gain confidence, connections and a better understanding of what it means to take their work into the wider world.’

Borosilicate glass is an obsession for Tom Dixon

A fascination with a material has led to new category for Tom Dixon Tom Dixon has long had a fascination with borosilicate glass, and has now used it for the first time in lighting.

Flare pares familiar forms back to their simplest geometry: spheres and cones come together to create two pendant silhouettes inspired by water in motion and the changing shape of a droplet. Bead has a soft, rounded profile – a suspended droplet with a generous centre, while Top narrows into an elongated, pointed silhouette.

Naturally heat-resistant and highly transparent, borosilicate glass lends itself to fine, precise forms.

Both Flare designs have a choice of finish and effect. Opal is soft, luminous and evenly diffused, while Silver is darker, metallised and highly reflective.

Opal’s triple-layer cased glass diffuses a warm, even glow and is paired with an Edison Screw fitting. Silver’s metallised interior produces deeper reflections around an integrated LED light source.

Gathering Upholstery, cabinet, dining and bedroom furniture will be on show Autumn Long Point returns this month, bringing the furniture sector to Long Eaton for three days of launches, awardwinning design, British craftsmanship and interiors.

Showrooms across Long Eaton and surrounding venues will welcome retailers, interior designers and specifiers to explore upholstery, cabinet, dining and bedroom furniture alongside manufacturing solutions and training.

30 companies will be exhibiting at the event including newcomers HTL and The English Chesterfield Company.

‘Long Point is a fantastic opportunity for the industry to see such a broad mix of furniture, design and craftsmanship.

We want visitors to explore the different showrooms, discover new collections and spend time with the people behind the brands,’ says David Gascoigne, Long Eaton Guild of Furniture Manufacturers chairman.

Upholstery will once again take centre stage, with established Long Eaton manufacturing strongly represented.

Gascoigne Designs, David Gundry and Artistic Upholstery will display product and fabric launches. John Sankey will

unveil its latest collections alongside its Sankey Journal, while Tamarisk will debut upholstery shapes with coordinated fabrics, and Hunter Knight will offer bespoke manufacturing

G Plan will showcase its latest collections; Parker Knoll will present a selection of its latest sofa and chair designs, and Duresta will offer visitors the opportunity to explore its luxury upholstery.

Making days count See what is new, meet key suppliers and keep business moving forward NorthPoint Furniture & Bed Show returns to Edinburgh next month, bringing retailers, manufacturers, suppliers and agents together for three days at the Lowland Hall, Royal Highland Centre.

For more than 30 years, the Scottish Furniture Representatives Association has brought the industry together in Edinburgh. NorthPoint builds on that heritage while giving the event a clear, modern purpose. It is a regional show with a national-quality line-up, created to give retailers across Scotland, Ireland and the North of England a productive reason to step away from the day-to-day and spend time with the people and products that matter to their business.

The move to October gives the show a key place in the retail calendar: it is a chance to review ranges ahead of the key final trading months of 2026, talk through plans for the year ahead and identify products that could refresh the shop floor before 2027.

The exhibitor list already includes a broad mix of established names and specialist suppliers across beds, mattresses, upholstery, cabinet furniture and accessories. Sealy, Silentnight, Sleepeezee, Shire Beds, Sherborne, Buoyant Upholstery, VIDA Living, Welcome Furniture and Purecare are among the brands confirmed, with further names to follow. This mix is central to the NorthPoint proposition, as retailers can reconnect with suppliers they already know, while discovering products and businesses they may not normally see without travelling further. For exhibitors, it creates the time for proper conversations, product demonstrations and commercially focused discussions in a relaxed environment.

Face-to-face contact remains one of trade exhibition’s biggest strengths. n a market where retailers are increasingly focused on value, margin,

differentiation and dependable supply, being able to see a product properly, meet the people behind it and discuss how it could work on the shop floor still matters.

The Royal Highland Centre’s Lowland Hall provides extensive free parking, straightforward road access and a location just minutes from Edinburgh Airport.

NorthPoint 2026 is not about being the biggest show in the calendar: it is about making three days count by discovering new products, connecting with the industry, and finding ideas, suppliers and partnerships that can help retailers grow.
