Others include Victoria’s executives, who must be sick of the sound of the word ‘shortselling’. Effectively betting that the group’s share price will fall to pocket the difference in price has seen more than £900m (about two-thirds) wiped off the group’s value since January. Worrying for those who actually own the shares, it seems likely that little that can be done to reverse the situation at the moment.

Still, September has many an exhibition to offer us a host of new products, so maybe the change of month really has been a good thing.

Among those who would have wished that August didn’t happen will be the directors of Made.com. Since its £200m stock market flotation last year its share price has plunged by more than 90% (it’s the worst performing IPO of 2021) and it has warned it may have to seek new investment. Then Gwyn Burr, its senior independent non-executive director resigned. (She’s also chair of the Skipton Building Society, the country’s fourth largest, which is without a permanent chief executive until the end of the year.) She would have played a major role in trying to convince investors to cough up for more than the market values it at, and now that job is a lot harder.

August broke with tradition and was anything but quiet, which some would have certainly hoped for

August used be a quieter month, with many consumers and those in the industry away on holiday. This year was very different. We have seen evidence that the post-pandemic boom may finally be over. If it is, it has been a hell of a run, and sales are still ahead on 2019, even allowing for inflation that shows no sign of going away any time in the medium term.

Of course, not helping those rising costs is the eye-watering increases that businesses have seen in their energy costs. And with the UK effectively being government-less there is no sign of companies getting any reassurance that there might be a plan to help them any time soon. Plus, any shoppers who didn’t make an interiors purchase in the past 24 months will be concentrating on autumn bills rather than a new sofa or carpet.

The Flooring Show Guide

In contrast, smooth flooring saw the rate climb from 15.2% to 16.9%. In July 2021 it was 12.2% and since August 2021 it has never been lower than 13.9% (December 2021). It reached 21% in May.

The moves come after a ‘significant double digit’ growth in sofa sales and a 50% rise in searches for ‘sofa’ on its website over the past year.

July’s performance was the 119th best month of 439. The ONS figures do not allow for inflation and are subject to revision.

Flooring sales in Great Britain fell by 19.75% in July compared with June, to £199.29m. However, compared with July 2021, sales were 15.86% higher.

The rate for carpet and other floorcoverings dropped from 8.3% to 6.4% in July. This compares with a figure of 8% in July 2021.

Inflation slows for furniture sector

Retail inflation for furniture eased marginally in July, but remains more than twice the rate it was a year ago.

The rate for household furniture dropped from 16.6% to 15.1% in July, ONS data showed. This compares with 6.9% in July 2021.

Fuel-poor employees in the furnishing industry can have their old or broken electrical appliances replaced for free.

The decrease was driven by carpets and rugs, which saw the annual rate drop from 7% to 4.9%. In July 2021 it was 7%.

The rate for garden furniture dropped from 25.5% to 21.1% (-14.8% in July 2021); lighting fell from 11.3% to 7.9% (5.2%), and furniture and furnishings dropped from 16.3% to 14.8%

Sales of furniture and lighting dropped by 20.4% to £1.226bn compared with June, reversing June’s increase. Compared with May, sales in England, Wales and Scotland were 2.26% lower. Sales were 2.46% higher than July 2021, 7.46% higher than July 2020 and 24.4% higher than July 2019.

After a surprise record month for furniture and lighting sales in Great Britain in June, relative normality returned in July, while flooring saw a double-digit monthly fall.

Oak Furnitureland has significantly boosted its upholstery offer and revised its interest-free credit offer.

Industry charity The Furniture Makers’ Company is working with the Local Energy Advice Partnership (LEAP) and C Supplies to offer people in the UK furnishing industry the opportunity to replace a maximum of two old or broken appliances – fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers – for free, exchanging their old, inefficient white goods appliances for modern, energy-efficient machines.

To qualify for the time-limited offer, applicants must have a total annual household income of less than £31,000 or be receiving one or more certain benefits.

‘With the energy crisis deepening, swapping to energyefficient appliances is one way of maximising energy usage and saving money. This offer from LEAP will allow hard-hit and struggling families or individuals the opportunity to get two new, efficient appliances delivered and installed for free, provided they meet the criteria,’ says Sue Dean, The Furniture Makers’ Company welfare officer.

Summertime in Germany: imm makes switch

imm cologne will move to June next year, with a special Spring Edition. The exhibition, which hasn’t taken place since 2020, will move to 4-7 June 2023 providing ‘planning certainty’, according to organiser Koelnmesse.Thescheduling of 2024 will be decided after next year’s exhibition.

The show will also be cut to four days and begin on a Sunday, rather than the previous Monday opening day. The public days will no longer happen, with consumers admitted by invitation only.

Visitor numbers have been falling for a number of editions – there were none in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic – and the buying groups organising the show had discussed a Sunday opening as far back as 2015.

Orders down, profits up at ScS

The organisers hope to emulate the success of The Flooring Show, which introduced a Sunday opening several years ago and has seen the Sunday become the busiest of the three days, and January Furniture Show.

Northern Ireland, Isle of Man, Shetland, Orkney, Caithness, Sutherland, and large parts of Moray, Argyll and Renfrewshire, and Inverness-shire.

‘In recent months we’ve seen reduced in-store and online visitors, resulting in a reduction in order levels, driven by the widely reported falling consumer confidence as a result of the cost of living pressures and economic uncertainty. We expect the low consumer confidence will continue to adversely impact the group in FY23,’ it warned.

Sunday move for BGNFS

‘Today the imm cologne advisory board gave the concept proposed by Koelnmesse for the imm Spring Edition in June 2023 the green light unanimously. Our thanks go to the advisory board and in particular to the German industry, the retail sector and the purchasing associations for their support. This concept will ensure that imm cologne can take place again after a two-year break,’ says Gerald Böse, Koelnmesse ceo.

Despite the slowdown, its order book is £28.8m higher than 2019, at £71.7m. But this is £31.8m lower than 2021.

‘The Spring Edition is synonymous with a new beginning. imm cologne wants to use it to motivate and to show how it is experimenting with new ideas and leaving well-trodden paths behind. What’s more, the June event gives our partners planning certainty,’ says Oliver Frese, Koelnmesse coo.

The quality of the work that had been done told its own story. The installer was clearly out of his depth and did not have the skills to fit to anything other than flat walls and floors. It seemed obvious that the falling-out was simply an excuse to walk away from the job without admitting defeat, and it had left the customer and her husband extremely upset about his attitude as well as the money. Like the highwayman, he was now simply holding them up: several months had gone by and the installer was not responding to their calls at all.

The case took a very long time to reach a hearing, and the customer had to live with the incomplete kitchen during this whole period as she didn’t have the money to have the work done again. Among the quality carpet manufacturers we deal with, we have just received a new price list from one, the first change for several months, and with the letter there was a breakdown of where its costs have risen and how that affects sales prices. The increases are very modest.

The knock-on effect is that flooring retailers really have to be on the ball to avoid pricing their carpets and smooth floorings incorrectly – either because they’re using the previous week’s price list, or because prices have changed between quoting and ordering the product.

Its openness is to be admired, in my opinion. It helps to explain to our doubting customers where and why suppliers’ costs have risen. In this particular instance, it certainly is a case of ‘the price Is right’.

Some younger retailers may not remember the TV quiz show The Price is Right, while older readers will remember that couples used to compete against each other to get the price of household products correct. This is dependent on having sufficient time between the notification of the change and the date upon which the price will change. Customers are aware of this situation and will often ask about possible price changes and how they can guarantee the existing price. This in turn

It seems that some of the suppliers in the flooring industry – for legitimate reasons – have almost weekly price changes at the moment: The Price Is Right contestants would find it hard to predict the price of floorcoverings.

The padding is made from a nonremovable inner lining of reclaimed and recyclable polyester that contains two soft elements: polyurethane, positioned in the lower or rear part of the cushion, and microspheres of recycled and recyclable polyester in the upper or front part. No adhesives are used to assemble the fillings, which are placed inside different pockets in the cushions. The outer fabric cover is removable.

Since Moduleo LayRed launched in 2019, the engineeredrenovation-friendly,vinylflooringhas become a firm favourite with retailers in the UK. Now the collection is bigger than ever, with more styles soon on the way.

Moduleo LayRed is helping to reconnect with nature

Moduleo LayRed is a product that combines design, unprecedented strength and exceptional comfort. It has a strong core, feels soft, dampens sound and features integrated underlay. It is waterproof and has a premium protective layer, making it even more resistant to scratches and stains. Integrated underlay also means that planks and tiles can be laid over existing

Register (EIR) too, bringing a new level of realism to a room. The ridges that are pressed into the surface coat of the floor throughout production exactly match the grain of the wood or stone in the photographic layer, meaning EIR gives floors an incredibly realistic finish.

Following updates to its stone and wood effects, the range comprises a total of 60 styles: 40 unique, natureinspired wood styles and 20 stone tile designs are available to retailers, providing the widest offering to date.

Moduleo tiles and planks contain up to 50% recycled material of verified origin and are themselves recyclable. Additionally, they’re manufactured on the banks of the Scheldt River in Belgium, where Moduleo recycles the river water and uses it in its cooling process.Launching soon is the Moduleo LayRed Herringbone collection – a classic reinvented. Biophilia is the love of life and/or living things, and it’s becoming an increasingly popular approach to how we live day to day and how we design our spaces. Moduleo LayRed has been developed with this concept in mind.

Curvedetail.

UPHOLSTERY

The basic organic shape is defined by a dynamic curve that can be combined asymmetrically and symmetrically. The distinctive design feature of Nanami is the organically curved shape, as well as the deliberately contrary formulation of the seat and back.

36 Interiors Monthly September 2022

Natural surface textures, like those of corals, mussels or snail shells provided the impulse to accept the technical challenge to develop the extraordinary look of the backrest.

Inspired by organic shapes and structures from the world that lies beneath the waves, Bretz’s Nanami appears like an element of the deep sea, created by the tides. The complete absence of hard edges and straight lines give the design a natural flow that seems like it grew out of itself.

Visit: www.bretz.com

The materiality of the bicolour velour unfurls perfectly through the folds and the resulting ends of the pile curvature. At the end of the backrest, the rhythm of the wave is interrupted by a smooth, stretched surface that gives the design a geometric component. The rounded body is supported by the clearly defined undercut, raised towards the floor, making the body appear lighter overall.

UPHOLSTERY w ww.interiorsmonthly.co.uk 37

A special technical challenge was the need to develop a solution for the sewing and upholstery technique of the fold structure on the backrest. The folds shouldn‘t be too stiff or too loose. The former can make the seating too hard, and with the latter the whole can quickly appear too lax. So it was important to find the perfect balance, both in the type of upholstery and in the regularity of the folds. Now every upholsterer who produces a new Nanami bears this responsibility, because the folds are individually laid and shaped so each sofa becomes a unique sculpture.

The two modular elements form smaller, larger, symmetrical or asymmetrical sofas with seating depths from 65cm to 100cm.

Tanks, fighter jets, bombed-out cities, people fleeing… The subjects of Jan Kath’s latest collection Rug Bombs are a savage depiction of the world’s current situation.

‘The events that led me to focus on the topics of war and violence date back many years and have their origins in my childhood. The conflict in Ukraine was not the trigger for this work. Rather, it was the war in Iraq and its consequences. Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo took up a great deal of my attention and changed something in me. Modern the subject matter may be, but the base is traditional patterns.

‘Be it Bijar, Tabriz or Serapi, I grew up with these patterns. I use them to tickle viewers’ aesthetic habits at the same time. It is a very deliberate, disturbing effect. The rugs attract our gaze, lure our eyes and hands, and ensure that the subjects depicted penetrate our perception more deeply.’

‘I was born in 1972. Even though I did not experience the Second World War, it was something that was always present during my childhood and youth. I was very close to my grandfather. He was a Wehrmacht soldier and was stationed in Poland, France and Russia. He told me about all that in great detail: he took me back to the trenches and to the battles just outside Stalingrad; he took me back to the times when he lost an eye – and most of his comrades.

The things people tell me manifest in my memory in a highly visual way: conversations from back in those days, the images from recent decades and the collection of materials that I have maintained for a long time. The company’s return to in-person shows post-pandemic saw it win the prestigious NBF Bed Product of the Year last year. It went on to be awarded the Best of British at JFS Awards in April, followed by Fara Butt, Shire sales and marketing director being hailed as Business Woman of the Year at the Yorkshire Choice Awards in May.

‘At Shire Beds we are always striving to improve our quality and sustainability. We have recently completed the full FSC certification. New commitment

‘Our investment in supporting this progressive international standard in Britain demonstrates how seriously we take our commitment to credible, sustainable initiatives, which we know are increasingly important to consumers – but better yet, we know they are the right thing to do. Auditing each business and farm thoroughly, the Responsible Wool Standard will help to ensure a positive impact on the environment and British farming communities alike,’ says David Baldry, Hypnos group md.

British farmers and communities through its established partnership with The Woolkeepers, to guarantee transparency and integrity from farm gate to shop floor.

Hypnos has set a Responsible Wool Standard first

The Responsible Wool Standard is recognised worldwide, but British-grown RWS certified wool is still relatively new to the UK market. It introduces expertise from major wool-growing regions worldwide alongside climate strategies for the future. Adhering to this progressive standard means considering the wider impact of the whole supply chain on the environment, animals and community.

Hypnos will continue to champion the benefits of wool and fairly support

Hypnos has committed to Textile Exchange’s Responsible Wool Standard, becoming the first brand in the UK, in any industry sector, to source certified wool from British farms that meet this established, globally recognised standard.

‘We’re constantly looking to use more low-impact materials and moving beyond neutralising our carbon footprint to actively helping to regenerate the planet with pioneering initiatives and relationships,’ he adds.

Wool Standard is to enhance UK farming standards by harnessing the expertise and perspectives of woolgrowing regions worldwide. Working with The Woolkeepers initiative we can provide certified quality wool that is environmentally and socially mindful, and we are pleased to see Hypnos supporting the standard in its new collections,’ says Anna Heaton, Textile Exchange fibre and materials strategy lead.

The Bed Show will see Hypnos present new and improved mattress collections, including the Pillowtop Collection using British wool. Having created the first Pillowtop mattress in 2011, Hypnos has been redefining the collection over the years to ensure its enduring popularity. This latest collection has the benefit of a more medium feel, giving comfort coupled with high-performance, ethically sourced fibres.

Emma is gearing up to debut its first motion range

World in motion

The world’s number one D2C sleep brand and latest NBF member, Emma – The Sleep Company, has had plenty of reasons to celebrate so far in 2022. Now with more than 30 active markets, Emma is also the most international D2C sleep brand, having expanded to a further 18 countries since 2019.

In February, the company reported a turnover of €645m for 2021 – a growth rate of 59%. This was the fourth full financial year growing profitably from cash flow. The UK business continues to be a key contributor to that success, with Emma’s UK teams investing heavily into the brand, outspending the more traditional brands in the market.

Its growing team of more than 850 ‘Emmies’ now base themselves in one of five worldwide offices – Frankfurt, Lisbon, Manila, Shanghai and Mexico City – or work remotely within the market, with many key hires being made in the retail team as Emma’s omnichannel strategy continues to be one of its key growth levers.

Retailers, textile flooring producers, distributors and contractors are invited

Exhibiting on stand A45, Carpet Recycling UK is inviting the sector to build on collaborative momentum and act to reduce textile flooring waste and resource usage, ahead of any potential changes to UK legislation such as Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).

‘Over the past year, we’ve recognised clear interest from the manufacturing sector in collaborating with our 119-strong network with a view to preparing for a potential future policy change where an EPR scheme could be a reality. While carpet and textile flooring are not on the immediate EPR agenda for policy makers, we are encouraging companies to be ahead of the curve and work together with a shared interest to make potential EPR policies relevant and as fair as possible. We have the opportunity to help shape any forthcoming schemes and perhaps even develop our own code of practice policies to reduce any impact on the sector going forward,’ says Adnan Zeb-Khan, CRUK scheme manager.

The not-for-profit association is urging manufacturers, flooring companies and recyclers to engage with its network to collaborate in putting sustainable processes in place that minimise waste, save on costs and keep resources in the supply chain longer. The aim is to consider reuse and recycling at the design stages and produce products for the circular economy, and to implement processes to retrieve them for recycling.

CRUK’s core funders have grown in number to 15, and support now comes from Balsan, Betap, Brintons Carpets,

‘We congratulate and continue to work with our members who have made great strides already in addressing waste and resources reduction. However, we need to emphasise that those who are not risk being left behind. Now is the time to act and put your sustainability plans into action,’ says Zeb-Khan.

CRUK has been shortlisted in the Environmental category of the National Flooring Innovation Awards 2022 for its circular economy achievements.

Carpet Recycling UK is urging the sector to act now

‘As a core funder of CRUK since 2010, Cormar is passionate about continually improving our sustainable processes and reducing textile flooring waste. This year we invested in a state-of-the-art recycling hub at our Lancashire mill, enabling us to recycle and reuse over 150,000 cardboard cones a week as well as the residual yarn. I think it’s extremely important for the flooring industry to step up its efforts in becoming more sustainable and start asking questions about how we can reduce waste, reuse materials, and in turn reduce the high costs of previous processes,’ says Ian Ford, Cormar md.

The number of core funders has risen to

to CRUK’s stand next to Cormar, where they can discuss latest outlets and what to consider in relation to logistics, for all types of surplus and used flooring, to help reduce waste and save money.

‘For more than a decade we have helped the UK manufacturing and recycling sector to find innovative market-based solutions to move textile flooring waste up the waste hierarchy. With new technological and recycling developments motivating us to do even more, visit us on our stand to discuss your requirements,’ says Zeb-Khan. Visit: www.carpetrecyclinguk.com

Metro understands that retailers work in differing marketplaces and locations, so having the ability to access to a whole host of marketing resources means that members have a wealth of experience and facilities custom-made to suit the independent flooring retailer’s needs.

What has developed is a group of independent retailers, from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is important to Metro members, who are given the opportunity to participate in group activity that is always optional and very rarely compulsory. This allows them to use all of the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses.

showroom, the Metro service doesn’t end there: another benefit of group membership is the Carpet 1st own-label display. Most retailers understand the benefit of rebranding, but so often this can create a mis-match of displays and stands. Metro’s Carpet 1st display stands have been designed to be completely modular, with a wall, lectern, corner and staircase unit: allowing retailers to show whatever products they choose to display, with standard or bespoke graphic panels.

The POS is designed and created in-house at the studio in the North-East of England, so it’s easy to change should members wish to do so. The team travels the four corners of the UK working on-site with members on whatever project they need assistance with.

Since the 1970s when Metro Group conceived the concept of pooling buying power to compete against national retailers, a lot has changed in the marketplace. The group has been expanded dramatically to also assist its members to sell the best-performing products in the market at a profit.

Although always working on new marketing ideas, Metro has invested heavily in working with bespoke ideas for individual retailers as it looks to help members when they need it most. Metro’s marketing service has a distinct advantage: it is completely bespoke.

Hoop back

An enormously popular and stylish hoop back with elegant good looks and features, robust enough even for contract. This is a quality beech chair that fits many bills.

Four bar Hexham

We have taken a classic Georgian style an adapted it for modern living. The ageless lines evoke their traditional background but also harness a more modern edge. Great as a stand-alone chair in its own right or a carver complement to our hoop or Hexham’s.

Hexham Eight bar

Windsor Hoop Carver

Our highly popular eight bar back plain spindle back chair is where modern meets the best of Victorian simple. Equally at home in town or country dining settings. Available in beech or oak.

This variant to the established eight bar Hexham spindle aims to give a cleaner, more contemporary look yet remains also able to cross over into traditional. A winner with painters.

Exhibitors are very happy with the strong orders, and the brisk buying attests to the variety and quality of products here. MIFF remains a solid sourcing platform in global furniture commerce – it has proven its resilience and relevance,’ says Karen Goi, MIFF general manager.

While this is about half the normal number of visitors, it was welcomed by
