Intrigue and farce on vote A pointless draw has done nothing for the reputations of both feuding teams in Headlam’s board battle It appears that John Le Carrie and Brian Rix have a far greater posthumous influence on the interiors industry than anyone realised. After months of ramping up the pressure on Headlam’s board, specifically chairman Stephen Bird, the day of First Seagull’s general meeting vote was almost at hand. And the day before, it pulled its resolutions, claiming ‘irregularities’ regarding the resolutions on a proxy-voting website. Headlam said it knew of no such goings on.

Of course, the vote had to go ahead – articles of association rules must be followed – and we’re back to where we all were before FS publicly revealed its desire to put its own people on the board.

But, we’re not back to where we were: the uncertainty surrounding the group will have persuaded some retailers and contractors to place their orders elsewhere (they aren’t exactly short of options), and a share of those will never return. We’ll never know what impact it has really had, but trying to suggest that its performance woes were in the main because of FS and the whole carry-on, just made the board look naïve at best.

This in turn has done little to convince shareholders that they should let the board carry on.

FS hasn’t exactly done its reputation much good either, with some of its suggestions, including after the AGM saying the only FTSE chairmen who stayed on after getting under 60% of shareholder support were Bird and James Murdoch. By the way, FS has taken to illustrating LinkedIn posts with Interiors Monthly news stories: I wonder if Stian Husvaeg, FS md will use this?

And the winners are. No, sorry wrong issue. Thank you to all of you who voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2026 (even those directors, sales reps, agents, admin staff and chief executives who voted for themselves – those votes were ignored). The winner of the Fortnum & Mason hamper is David Holmes, Broadstairs Carpets director. The August issue will reveal who you think are the best in the business.

The Cotswold Company sees sales jump 23% Expanding furniture chain The Cotswold Company has seen sales leap by 23% to £123m in the year to the end of February.

TCC grew from nine to 12 stores in the year, and has since opened in Kingston, with Redbrick Mill (Batley) and two others planned this financial year. Active customer numbers grew by 19% and upholstery sales by 60% during the period, although details were not disclosed.

‘As consumers take a more considered view over their purchases, our proposition – centred on high-quality, madeto-last furniture that has been made to last generations – has never been more relevant. Combining this shift with

the strength of our brand and the completion of several strategic initiatives, we have continued our strong momentum with another period of record growth in which we’ve significantly outperformed the broader homeware and furniture market,’ says Ralph Tucker, TCC ceo.

‘Now, with our enhanced delivery and distribution capabilities, proven AI capabilities and expanding range of characterful and unique products, we have an even stronger foundation. This will enable us to accelerate our UK expansion, deliver further profitable growth, and strengthen our position as one of the UK’s most loved, handcrafted homeware brands.’

Hainsworth eyes international Acceleration expansion after growth BedKingdom and Cuckooland parent Flair Furniture has seen sales growth accelerate after leaping last year.

The group saw sales jump by 22% to £34.3m in the year to the end of February, with operating profits 461% higher at £1.2m, returning to 2024/25’s level. Since then, turnover growth has accelerated to 31% in Q1 2026, the company says.

Ashley Hainsworth, Flair Furniture md and founder says investment, including two warehouses in the past 18 months, has him eyeing overseas expansion for the BedKingdom brand.

‘I never imagined that the business

I started as an experimental university project more than 10 years ago would turn into one of the UK’s fastest-growing companies. Myself and the team have worked incredibly hard to get here, continuously improving and investing in our people, product range, customer experience and technology. Our first stop in terms of expansion is Ireland,’ he says.

The company has grown to 49 employees on the back of the growth, which has seen it widen its product offer into dining and outdoor. Hainsworth says the mix will see further expansion in the coming months.

Likewise has seen sales growth accelerate in recent weeks, with June delivering a 20% boost.

The flooring wholesaler says sales in the year to 16 June were up by 17%, on a like-for-like basis. This compares with a 16.5% rise in the year to 31 May. Performance in June was 20.8% higher, compared with an annual increase of 19.1% seen in May. ‘The group has had a very positive start to the financial year, with revenue growth outperforming original internal expectations. Given the widespread global tension and uncertainty, H2 26 is very difficult to predict, but the board remains confident in achieving market expectations for FY26,’ it says.

Big Shots hits the mark The 31st edition of Big Shots, The Furniture Makers’ Company’s annual clay pigeon shooting fundraiser, raised £30,000 to support people working in the furnishing industry.

The event, principally sponsored by Furniture Village, saw experienced and novice shooters compete across 10 stands alongside a range of novelty challenges.

Participants later enjoyed a three-course lunch, prize-giving ceremony, charity raffle and auction with money-can’t-buy items helping to generate funds for the industry charity.

Headlam calls for ‘period of stability’ Headlam has called for ‘a period of stability’ after an attempt to remove three directors, including chairman Stephen Bird, ended in claims and counter-claims of voting irregularities.

11% shareholder First Seagull withdrew its resolutions the day before the group’s general meeting, saying: ‘On proxyvote.com, the same resolutions have appeared under two designations (“Special” and “Extraordinary” General Meeting) with conflicting recommendations, and votes validly cast have subsequently been reset and nullified without notification.

A material volume of votes

may have been impacted by this. It raises serious concerns regarding the validity of the results. We will provide an update when we know more.’

It has yet to do so.

Headlam says it has no knowledge of any problems with the vote.

First Seagull called the general meeting at Headlam’s Coleshill head office – which it is considering selling and leasing back to raise funds – accusing the board of overseeing a massive loss of shareholder value and lacking skills to turn around the fortune of the flooring distributor. It wanted the trio replaced with its md Stian

Husvaeg, and Andrea Davis.

‘The meeting process has been a distraction for Headlam, our shareholders, colleagues and other stakeholders. As the board, we now call for a period of stability to allow Headlam’s new executive team to focus on delivering actions that will benefit all our stakeholders.

Should any further campaigns persist, the board will continue to vigorously defend the rights of our majority shareholders, colleagues and other stakeholders,’ says a Headlam statement.

Meanwhile, Headlam is to move its north-east of England distribution to a 65,000sqft

centre on Centralway 65, in the heart of Team Valley. Its Newcastle and LGS sites will close, including the two trade counters, with staff moving to the new facility this month and next.

‘We are laser-focused on rebuilding our base of core independent retailers and contractors, the customers on which the strength of this business depends. Bringing two of our teams together at our new, modern distribution facility is the latest step in our journey to create a simpler, more effective business that is better aligned to these customers,’ says Rob Barclay, Headlam ceo.

Winners all This year’s Kidderminster Carpet Manufacturers Charity Golf Tournament raised £22,300 for Macmillan Cancer Support and local charities.

‘This is an amazing rise of 10% and is recognition of the wonderful support you have shown. The monies raised will be distributed amongst the partner charities in the coming weeks, and I’m sure they would all give heartfelt thanks for all your efforts: your support will make a huge difference to their ability to carry on the great work they do,’ the organising committee told supporters and sponsors, including Interiors Monthly.

SCP steels for Simple launch

Fair play Etailer Wayfair is to sponsor rugby union side Leicester Tigers from next season.

As part of the multi-year agreement, Wayfair.co.uk branding will feature on the back of players’ match-day shorts across home, away and European competitions; alongside stadium spaces, player access, engagement and content creation.

New md as Haigh steps back

Jacqui Stefanov Jacqui Stefanov, former Tempur UK md responsible for establishing the brand in the UK, died on 13 June. She was 58.

The bed brand says she died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family. Stefanov joined the brand as an accountant, before becoming UK md in 1995, aged 26.

‘With her flair for innovative consumer marketing and incredible energy she established the Tempur brand in the UK through D2C sales. In 1999 she created a retail sales division and Tempur began partnerships with many of the UK and Ireland’s leading furniture and bedding retailers. During this period, she also worked closely with the company founders, helping the company become established around the world,’ it says.

‘The transformation of the company into a multichannel business was a UK industry first and saw Tempur UK grow significantly in the coming years.

‘Since her retirement the company has continued to build on the foundations she set.

In 2015 she returned to live close to the town of her birth, Hawick. She is survived by her loving husband, Andy Hills and family members.’

‘Jacqui was a larger-than-life character, a true innovator and entrepreneur who made a huge impact in the industry and on me personally. Her incredible energy and work ethic, whilst being enormous fun, made her truly unique, and we are going to miss her terribly,’ says Tobin James, Tempur UK md.

Lorna Haigh, Alternative Flooring creative director is to step back from the company after a quarter of a century.

The move at the Ulster Carpets Group subsidiary comes as Stephen Brooks was officially confirmed as md.

Brooks spent 16 years as operations and IT director at £19m turnover bathroom and plumbing accessory company Croydex, followed by over a year at patient protection supplier Kingsway Group as coo.

Haigh has switched to a consultancy role, working with the marketing team on product development and launches.

Sofa Club strengthens leadership

Sofa Club has further strengthened its leadership team, hiring former Sainsbury’s executive Kate Preusse to the new role of group operations director.

Preusse spent almost a decade at Argos and Sainsbury’s with roles including imports supply Mattress retailer The Odd Company has recruited Ruairi Giles as operations director. He spent 17 years at Harrison Spinks, where he was latterly director of customer experience.

Sleep and performance coach Chester Maglo has joined Mattress Online’s panel of sleep experts, with a role of providing unique content focusing on high-quality sleep and its links to the physical and mental science of rest.

Noël & Marquet has appointed Andrew Yiacoumi as sales manager for London and the south east of England. He joins from Porcelanosa.

Sue Kemp, AIS md is to leave at the end of the year.

Damsel in distress?

Our knight in shining armour mounted his sturdy steed to investigate the strange case

Katya was a damsel in distress. Her fitter had found severe warping of the engineered wood flooring she had chosen for her lounge and had described it as ‘unfittable’. The supplier seemed to doubt that the product could be faulty and Katya’s finance provider, against whom she raised a complaint under the Consumer Credit Act (known as a Section 75 complaint) said the complaint couldn’t be taken any further without additional information.

The flooring was a click-together engineered wood plank and the photograph Katya sent me showed four assembled boards which were raised by more than 150mm at one side due to the issues, but the supplier had claimed the flooring was within ‘all industry norms’ and was capable of being fitted.

This opinion had been proffered without a site visit or examination of the flooring.

The finance provider offered to cover the cost of an independent inspection up to a maximum of £300 as long as it supported Katya’s claim, but she had been unable to find anyone willing to carry out a site visit for less than £800 – although I wondered if this was just

her way of trying to bargain on the price.

As always, I offered to look at some photographs to see if there was any help I could give free of charge before she committed to any outlay she might not be able to recover, and that was when she sent me the picture, together with five pages of commentary.

There was a timeline of events together with copies of emails and more photos. The 15 or so boxes of unfitted flooring were shown to confirm they had been stored in accordance with the suppliers’ instructions, and Katya extolled the skill and experience of her fitter.

After reviewing all of this information I gave her my initial thoughts. Warping remained a possibility, but I offered her a couple of other possibilities that she needed to consider.

Katya contacted me a few days later.

She wanted me to take a look at her flooring, and it was now urgent. She lived in a seaside resort, but I was still relieved to be able to visit between the May and June heatwaves, not least because she wanted me to check through the boxes, not just the one on top.

There were several loose planks on the top of the stack. These were in direct sunlight in front of bi-fold doors. I don’t know how long they had been there, but the veneer surface had changed colour considerably so the shape of overlapping boards was clearly visible.

And they, of course, had warped in the fluctuating environment. I took them into the kitchen and assembled them, flat, in a few minutes. The planks did need encouraging with a tapping block, but when clicked together the joints were rock solid.

It wasn’t enough. Katya was sure one of the other boxes had far more problematic planks. She pointed to one

and went off to ‘work from home’ while I assembled another area from the planks in this box. Flat. Shortly after I stopped with the tapping block she poked her head round the door, but rather than accepting the evidence she told me she must have shown me the wrong box and proceeded to point to another one, expecting me to put that one together, too.

I did – but only after sliding the other panels out of the way so there was space. This pack had panels with cut ends amongst the mix and I took this to be confirmation that this definitely was the pack that had previously been ‘fitted’. After taking out some other oddities – panels from a completely different flooring, the planks assembled as easily as the others. Yes, some were a little warped, but once interlocked the flooring was flat and secure.

Fortunately, at that time Katya’s work really was taking her attention, so I showed the results to her husband and made my exit before she could find another box and try to make me install the entire floor.

Kettal celebrated 60 years of design by opening Paulton House, its London flagship showroom.

Conceived as a new platform for furniture, design and cultural exchange, the 6,450sqft space on Shoreditch is seen by the Spanish company as more than a showcase for its outdoor designs. ‘With Paulton House, we wanted to create more than a showroom. Our ambition is to establish a London platform where furniture, architecture, design culture and creative dialogue can co-exist through installations, collaborations and shared experiences,’ says Alexis GouillyFrossard, Kettal export sales director.

As a signal of that intent, its first few days saw designer Jay Osgerby talk about exploring creative process, collaboration and the evolving relationship between furniture and the spaces it occupies; and the presentation of the Eames Pavilion System, a contemporary modular system inspired by the experimental thinking of Charles and Ray Eames, and developed

by Kettal in collaboration with the Eames Office, alongside the launch of The Eames Houses, the first comprehensive overview of the couple’s realised, unrealised and previously unseen residential architecture projects written by Eckart Maise. The Eames presentation will be in-store until the end of September.

‘Weaving and stripes have always been closely connected, but we wanted to explore the stripe as a fundamental element rather than just a pattern. By integrating it into the warp, we

collaborate with the production methods themselves. At the same time, we chose to leave space for the irregularities of the craft; variations in tension and material are not flaws but natural qualities, human traces that give the design its character,’ says Magnus Eleback, Massproductions ceo and co-founder.

Massproductions applied its threedimensional design expertise throughout development. By using a slightly coarser yarn for the stripes, a subtle textural contrast is created, adding depth to the surface. As a result, the stripes are not only perceived visually but can also be experienced through touch.

‘We wanted to create a dialogue between the natural and the constructed.

By contrasting a base in subdued, neutral shades with a bold, artificial accent colour, we found a balance between the organic and the contemporary. Adding a coarser yarn to the stripe was a way to give the two-dimensional weave a physical presence, a quiet dimensionality,’ says Chris Martin, Massproductions head of design and co-founder.

‘This intersection of logic and tactility is a central theme for me. It has been fascinating to see how Massproductions applies its precision to our handcrafted textures. In Cord, industrial design

Rug with a view Aerial images by Italian photographer Giacomo Giannini become a series of rugs A photographic exhibition and rugs are not natural bedfellows, but Seletti has never been known to shy from crossing boundaries and transforming artists’ visions into objects capable of making art accessible: hence Walking into an image.

The three 280cm x 200cm designs are based on aerial photographs taken in Italy by Giacomo Giannini between 1985 and 1992, and provided somewhat unusual exhibits at the annual The Phair photography exhibition in Turin in May. The three shots offer a new interpretation of the landscape from a perspective not that common predrones, and reflect on the relationship between people and the environment, with an almost painterly character.

The three subjects play with chromatic saturation and urban geometries.

Holiday at the seaside #18 is a tribute to the aesthetics of Italian coastlines, where summer crowding is transformed into a composition of shapes and saturated colours. By contrast, Sfasciacarrozze (Scrapyard) elevates mechanical chaos into a complex and hypnotic chromatic texture, while Basket focuses on the melancholic charm of an empty playground marked by time, where the human absence emphasises the graphic strength of the lines and worn materials.

Optimum results Pressure-sensitive adhesives are ideal for the installation of LVT Given customers’ high expectations for LVT installations, ensuring optimum results is vital. ‘Pressure-sensitive adhesives are ideal for the installation of LVTs because they form an instant grab upon contact, so once positioned, tiles or planks won’t move about as installers work. They also offer an extended open time, reducing the risk of late placement and making them ideal for installations where more complex designs or patterns are being created.

Some pressure-sensitive adhesives are also formulated to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations showing through thin floorcoverings – “grin-through” – affecting the appearance of the finished installation.,’ says Tim Green, F Ball Centre of Excellence head of training.

There are specific applications where additional performance characteristics will be important to maintain the long-term aesthetic appearance of an installation. For example, when installing flooring in areas subject to extreme temperatures and temperature fluctuations, it is recommended to use a temperature-tolerant adhesive.

in the flooring and gapping at the edges of the LVT over time. This can be the case in conservatories or rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows, which are subject to solar gain, such as extensions with bi-fold doors.

‘Temperature-tolerant adhesives develop the high bond strength required to hold flooring securely in place in such environments, ensuring a long-lasting finish. However, temperature-tolerant adhesives have traditionally been wet-lay, and fitters requiring this type of adhesive have had to forgo pressuresensitive benefits. Advancements in hybrid polymer adhesives have enabled the development of high-performance vinyl adhesives with revolutionary combinations of properties, including combined pressure-sensitive and temperature-tolerant characteristics,’ says Green.

F Ball’s Styccobond F49 Hybrid PS is a water-based, pressure-sensitive vinyl adhesive that develops the extremely high bond strength and dimensional stability required to hold LVT firmly in place in areas exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations (from -20degC to +60degC). ‘Whilst providing high initial tack, the adhesive allows the flooring to be lifted and repositioned in the initial

stages of drying, making it a great choice for installing tiles and planks, intricate patterns and bespoke designs that need precise alignment. Styccobond F49 is also resistant to moisture, meaning it is suitable for use in areas subject to water and high humidity, including kitchens and bathrooms.’

Total experience Beauflor surprised visitors with an immersive concept At the fifth edition of Flanders Flooring Days, Beauflor demonstrated the endless possibilities of digital printing in vinyl flooring, leaving a lasting impression on visitors from across the globe.

Inspired by the Return to Being trend – rooted in craftsmanship, authenticity, human connection, botanicals and individuality – Beauflor surprised visitors with an immersive concept at the Design Studio, within the Experience Centre at Wielsbeke.

On entering, visitors walked upon a digitally printed pathway featuring stepping stones set among small pebbles, guiding them into a serene and tranquil Zen garden: a lifelike landscape created using realistic interpretations of grass, moss, bark, earth and sand.

Five organically shaped islands, positioned throughout the garden, formed a striking artistic installation.

Each of these elements was topped with vinyl flooring inspired by natural materials such as wood, limestone, terrazzo and marble. Soft textures, calming tones and subtle natureinspired details enhanced the sense of harmony and authenticity.

Alongside the installation, Beauflor introduced a flooring collection aligned with its Return to Being theme. Shown on a unique sliding display, visitors experienced every design at a realistic scale. The collection is available on demand starting from a minimum order of one roll (4m wide), and delivery times are up to eight weeks depending

on the composition.

To further enrich the experience, Beauflor added in soft ambient music and subtle aromas, creating a complete sensory journey that elevated cushion vinyl beyond expectation.

An inspirational digital leaflet helped visitors connect the designs with the manufacturer’s extensive in-house capabilities and customisation possibilities.

The concept, presentation and collection were met with enthusiasm from customers, highlighting the success of Beauflor’s presence at Flanders Flooring Days 2026 and reinforcing its position as a leader in digitally printed vinyl flooring.

Understanding slip resistance Exploring the test methods involved in assessing flooring’s properties Slips, trips and falls account for almost a third of non-fatal workplace injuries in the UK, resulting in around 200,000 incidents each year. Inappropriate flooring choices and poor maintenance can significantly increase the risk, particularly in environments exposed to water, grease, spills or dirt.

Reducing slip-related injuries requires a full assessment of all factors influencing floor safety. This includes ongoing evaluation of the slip resistance of the flooring material, the type of footwear used, environmental conditions, likely contaminants and the effectiveness of cleaning and maintenance procedures.

resistance tests on flooring products using three main testing methods: The Pendulum method: EN 16165:2021 Annex C (previously BS 7976-2) is the preferred slip resistance test in the UK. A swinging imitation heel is fitted with standardised rubber material to simulate either barefoot or shod conditions. The heel passes over a controlled section of flooring, and testing is usually conducted in both dry and wet condition.

Results are commonly interpreted using the UK Slip Resistance Group guidelines, Issue 6 (published in January 2024). These classify flooring according to slip potential and are the source of the widely referenced recommendation of a Pendulum Test Value of 36 or higher.

Other factors affecting the slip potential may mean a higher result is required.

A key advantage of the pendulum test is the portability of the equipment, allowing onsite assessment. This helps to determine whether flooring remains suitable over time or if contamination and wear are affecting safety. Variations of the pendulum method can be used for specific surfaces, including wooden floors, roads and runways.

Ramp methods: across continental Europe, the ramp test methods EN 16165:2021 Annex A and Annex B (formerly DIN 51097 and DIN 51130) are

more widely used. These tests involve participants walking forwards and backwards across contaminated flooring samples while the surface angle is gradually increased until slipping occurs.

The average slip angle achieved is then classified according to the German National Annex to DIN EN 16165:2023.

Annex A uses a soap-solution contaminant with barefoot operators, whereas Annex B uses motor oil and operators wear heavily cleated safety boots. Commonly used in Europe, these methods are viewed with caution in the UK because the test conditions may not accurately reflect typical flooring use, and the classification system can sometimes be misunderstood.

Tribometer method: the EN 13893:2002 tribometer method uses a powered trolley that moves across the floor surface to measure friction. Because it does not replicate normal walking movement, it is considered less representative of real slip risks, especially in contaminated conditions, but remains important for resilient, laminate and modular multi-layer flooring products that are CE or UKCA marked in line with construction product regulations. Under EN 14041:2004/AC:2006, this test method must be used when manufacturers make slip resistance claims.
