Not all doom and gloom It’s not just politicians who are having to rethink things: shoppers seem to be suffering from postgeneral election blues Interiors retailers always hate elections, because as soon as one is called consumers defer big-ticket purchases, even if the opinion polls suggest a clear result is on the cards.

There was plenty of evidence from flooring suppliers that the sales tap had been turned off in April (things had been going well in the first quarter). But, according to DFS, it has spread to upholstery: the ‘trading environment has recently weakened beyond our expectation with significant declines in store footfall leading to a material reduction in customer orders. We believe these demand effects are market-wide,’ it warned investors, who responded by promptly dropping the shares.

footfall, with sales reports from John Lewis clearly showing that consumers preferred enjoying their gardens to going shopping, unless you were selling fans or garden furniture.

The usual expectation is that after an election shopping returns to normal: after all Mrs Smith still needs that new hall carpet, wardrobe or sofa.

However, the failure of the Conservatives to secure a House of Commons majority, combined with what that could mean for Brexit negotiations, and a drifting housing market, has also impacted on people.

The YouGov/CEBR Consumer Confidence Index fell from 109.1 the week before the election to 105.2 in the 12 days after (anything over 100 is positive).

This may sound like terrible news but it needs to be put into context: YouGov says consumers are ‘resilient’ about job security over the next year. As the Index sunk to 70 in 2008 and didn’t fully recover until 2013, it’s been worse.

Victoria to move production from Kidderminster plant…

Victoria Group is to end carpet production at Kidderminster while Brintons is moving Axminster production from the town to its overseas plants.

Victoria said the move was part of a manufacturing reorganisation to improve efficiency and margins ‘due to rapid growth and continued significant demand for its products.’ Some 66 staff are set to be made redundant.

Philippe Hamers, Victoria Group ceo, reviewed its manufacturing facilities and decided that moving production to Westex Carpets and Abingdon Flooring will increase production capacity and profitability.

The move will ‘rationalise manufacturing operations to drive further incremental margin uplift and optimise asset utilisation and positively impact manufacturing efficiency to provide significant – and much needed – additional capacity without material capital expenditure,’ said the company.

Its Midlands distribution centre is to be closed and warehousing moved to Kidderminster. The Kidderminster site was sold and leased back in 2014 but will continue to house the head office, product development, and showroom.

A new distribution centre will open to the north west of London by late 2018 to service the south of the UK, followed by a centre in North East England.

‘The successful growth of Victoria has enabled the group to reassess how best to utilise its manufacturing and logistics capabilities. By reorganising our manufacturing and logistics operations, we will continue to grow Victoria’s earnings per share and free cashflow,’ said Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman.

‘We have done this before, of course. Shareholders will no doubt recall our manufacturing rationalisation in Australia in 2014, which was highly successful with resultant revenue growth and improvement in margins that have been very pleasing. Additionally, we remain confident that further significant earnings-accretive acquisition growth, in

addition to underlying organic development, can be achieved to create further shareholder value.’

Gavin Miller, regional secretary at the Community Trade Union, said he would be seeking urgent talks with Victoria.

‘This news comes as another devastating blow to Community members and was unexpected. We will be seeking urgent talks with management to address the announcement, our aim is to preserve as many jobs as possible and I would call on the company to make a commitment to honour voluntary redundancy applications at the end of this process.’

Victoria also said current trading was positive. ‘The group continues to trade well. Completion of the integration of recent acquisitions in the UK, the Netherlands, and Australia, has ensured that the group’s underlying profits before tax will be well ahead of last year and the board is confident of meeting market expectations for the financial year ending 31 March 2018. Reshaping the group will achieve meaningful cost and margin synergies, freeing up capital for further domestic and international earnings enhancing acquisitions.’

…as Brintons looks abroad for Axminster manufacturing Brintons has started a 30-day consultation period with the 60 production employees affected by the proposal to move Axminster manufacturing overseas. If the roles are ended, production jobs will fall to 53, alongside 89 at its head office.

The company said between 10 and 15 staff could transfer to its Telford operation.

‘Brintons operates in an extremely competitive global marketplace. In order

to maintain and strengthen our position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of bespoke carpets, it is vital we constantly review our business operations and are able to respond to prevailing trading conditions. We will, where possible, offer new employment opportunities at our Telford plant. The proposed restructure is part of our long-term strategy to safeguard the company’s future interests,’ said Rob Greenfield, Brintons group manufacturing and logistics director.

Brintons said its Stourport Road site in Kidderminster remained an important location within the group. It will continue to house the dyeing plant, which supplies coloured yarn to the European production facilities, Wilton weaving, warehousing and distribution of residential carpets, and the head office.

Unions had previously warned that the company was looking to move production to its lower cost overseas facilities.

CMA sounds alarm bells on price fixing for lighting The lighting industry has been told by the Competition and Markets Authority that it suspects suppliers are engaging in resale price maintenance.

It has written warning letters to a number of lighting suppliers ‘where there are reasonable grounds to suspect they may be engaging in RPM.’ The move follows a fine of £2.7m for Endon and Saxby brand owner National Lighting Company for imposing a minimum price on online sellers, who then had to retail products at, or above, this price. NLC tried to avoid detection by not committing agreements to writing.

Prices were imposed on Saxby products from 31 October 2012 to 25 February 2013 and on Endon from 31 May 2013 to 15 June 2016.

The fine includes an extra penalty because the company ignored an earlier warning letter from the CMA. A warning letter may be sent when the CMA has reasonable grounds to suspect anti-competitive behaviour.

It is not a formal allegation but must be taken seriously

and requires a considered response.

‘This decision should act as a warning to companies that resale price maintenance is illegal and that warning letters issued by the CMA are to be taken seriously and not to be ignored. The digital economy is booming and with so many businesses operating online it is vital that fair competition is maintained across all sectors. The CMA wants to ensure consumers get a fair price and a good deal. That can only happen when retailers are free to set their own prices,’ said Ann Pope, CMA senior director, antitrust.

While NLC’s fine was increased for ignoring the CMA’s warning letter, it also benefited from a 30% reduction to the fine because it applied for and was granted leniency. An additional 20% reduction was applied because NLC voluntarily entered into settlement with the CMA. The fine also included a small reduction as a result of NLC agreeing to implement a comprehensive compliance programme.

The CMA also has the power to fine retailers who enter into RPM agreements with suppliers.

MSIF boost for GoodWeave

Good start

GoodWeave, the anti-child and forced labour rug labelling scheme, has received a major funding boost from the Modern Slavery Innovation Fund.

The non-governmental organisation is to receive about £600,000 over the next two years from MSIF enabling it to rollout its operations into new product sectors. MSIF was set up following the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2015. It helps to pay for projects to stop child slavery in factories supplying products to this country and work to identify and disrupt key human trafficking routes to the UK used by organised crime gangs.

GoodWeave has made major inroads into reducing child labour by 80% in the South Asian rug industry since its inception in 1995.

The grant will allow GoodWeave to fast-track developments into other manufacturing sectors in India and Nepal and help more UK companies establish a real-time map of their supply chains, from factories right down to home workers.

DFS: sales fall is across the board DFS saw its stock market value plunge by more than a fifth after it warned that trading had ‘weakened beyond expectation’ and profits would be hit.

The upholstery chain’s share price fell by 22% after it told investors while it had expected a ‘softer market environment in the second half’ of its financial year ‘the trading environment has however recently weakened beyond our expectation, with significant declines in store footfall leading to a material reduction in customer orders.

‘We believe these demand effects are market-wide, in line with industry indicators, and are linked to customer uncertainty regarding the general election and the uncertain macroeconomic environment.

As stated previously, the upholstery market does see short-term demand fluctuations from time to time, within an overall historical

trend of long-term growth,’ it said.

Driven by these short-term revenue effects, it now anticipates EBITDA over the full year to be lower than market expectations for the current year, and in the range of £82m-£87m, compared to last year’s £94.4m.

DFS has maintained its investment in the business and is confident it will outperform the market over the longer term, driven by its scale, business model and proven growth levers.

‘We believe our expectations for the next financial year are realistic based on consumer confidence remaining broadly in line with current levels, given its consequent impact on upholstery demand. We expect continued strong cash generation that has allowed the recent announcement of a £20m special dividend in addition to our ordinary dividend,’ said the company.

Mattressman expands in Norfolk Mattressman owner Andrew Kerry has added to his retail network with the acquisition of a Norfolk flooring, upholstery and beds business.

Kerry has bought Thetford retailer Cosy Carpets from Ricky and Paul Baker, who founded the company in 1992.

‘It’s a fantastic business and well set up and has great synergy with my other companies. I love my job and I’m very

hands on, and for me this is really exciting,’ said Kerry.

The staff at the 15,000sqft store have been retained.

As well as Mattressman, which has 21 stores in the UK and an ecommerce operation, Kerry owns the Kerrys department store in Lowestoft and Kerrys carpet store in North Walsham, Norfolk.

Sainsbury’s backs talent Graduate design show New Designers is being sponsored by Sainsbury’s Home, with the winner working for the retailer for a year.

In week one of the two week show (28 June – 1 July and 5-8 July) the winner of the New Designers Sainsbury’s Home Award will receive £500 and mentoring from the Sainsbury’s Home design team.

The winner will also be shortlisted with six other designers to become Sainsbury’s Home Young Designer of the Year and take up the role of junior designer at Sainsbury’s Home for a year.

‘We design over 80% of our products in-house and currently have a ceramicist, illustrator and watercolour artist, alongside textile and 3D design experts in our team to bring our designs to life. They will be sold through TCS. Cutherbertson, a director of Sofa So Good NE since October 2010, will be SSG’s lead designer. Scott Latta becomes operations director, with 20 years’ experience in the upholstery sector.

Nature’s way Products must be used properly ‘It must be the wood, it’s faulty.’ The customer pointed to the place where the flooring had lifted by 150mm in front of the hearth. ‘I bet it was not dried properly and it’s lifted because it’s dried out in my home.’

I’m sure there was a logical thought process behind his comments, but the customer, who had installed the flooring himself, misunderstood how wood behaves. When it dries, it shrinks. When it expands, it’s because it has taken on moisture. So if a floor lifts, it’s because the home has more moisture than the flooring did when it was new. Wood is a natural material, so it can’t be faulty in itself. But how it’s processed and turned into furniture or flooring, and how it’s installed, can cause issues.

We use other natural materials: wool for carpets, stone for furniture and worktops, other natural fibres for soft furnishings and even bamboo (a grass, not wood). With all of these materials, you can’t change their natural characteristics, so you have to use them

in a way that takes these characteristics into account.

Wood is dried and then joined in ways that allow some movement if the moisture content changes. Wool is often treated to deter pests who see it as their natural food and nesting material.

Stone? I’ve been surprised recently by three examples of the same problem caused because the installers did not take into account how heavy it is.

The first was a stone-topped island unit in a kitchen that had been fitted on top of some laminate flooring. You might as well have nailed the flooring in place.

Around the island the flooring was lifting and the joints were being crushed as the compression forces caused by expansion forced each board into the next.

Then the sinking worktop. Almost 100mm lower down the wall than when it had been fitted, leaving the splashback clinging to the wall with a large gap underneath. When I removed the plinths the carcase sides had been pushed downwards because the fitters had not

fitted the feet the right way round, and the side support lip was not under the side panels.

And then the same thing again with a peninsular run of units. This time the units had not been fixed to the floor nor braced against the walls so it was tipping away from the wall under the weight.

In each case the installers were surprised and confounded by what had happened. If they’d only seen how many people it took to lift in the worktops, I think their surprise would have been that the units were managing to stay up at all.

When it comes to materials we are not so familiar with, such as bamboo, it’s more important than ever to follow the installation and care instructions closely.

They’ve been prepared after lots of testing. But even if they haven’t, not following the instructions would invalidate a claim if things went wrong.

Geometric patterns can look modern, retro or traditional, depending on their style, colour and design; and they can range from subtle to ultra-bold with intriguing shapes such as hexagons, cubes or triangles. Kersaint Cobb’s Vie Maison range

embraces a Scandinavian style of interiors while maintaining the simplicity of French elegance. There are both 150mm and 190mm options in seven designs. The 18mm thick product has a tongue and groove installation system and a variety of finishes.

Impression is Classen’s latest Wiparquet collection: a clickable HDFbased floor that has an additional, integrated cork layer for sound absorption. The collection includes 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm thicknesses and a variety of plank

formats from narrow to XXL. BerryAlloc has revamped its Saga collection to encompass the latest trends in interior design. It brings extra short or extra long planks, allowing experimentation with the dimensions of a room. Saga comes in a soft colour palette of eight oak shades and is characterised by deep grooves that increase the feel of the floor and add a matte effect to the boards, enhancing its modern look. Boards are coated with oil, for a pleasant touch.

Nordic Polar Oak is a light wood floor with rustic charm and the longest and widest of Pergo’s Langeland planks (2,400mm x 260mm). This achieves a spacious impression with variation in colour and structure that includes large knots and cracks. The enhanced texture is achieved through deep brushing of softer areas for a more natural feel, with bevels along all edges. It has an extra matt lacquer for an untreated wood look.

Triple lock Three technologies combine for waterproof flooring When creating waterproof laminate planks for its Quick-Step, Balterio and Pergo brands, Unilin’s approach was based on three premises: compressing the plank’s bevels during production; adding a water-repellent coating; and using click installation systems with pre-tension.

‘When it comes to bevelled laminate floors, all three elements are crucial for a 100% waterproof end result,’ says Laurent Meersseman, Unilin R&D director.

Quick-Step offers two waterproof laminate collections: Impressive (Ultra) and Majestic.

Bevels are pressed into the HDF surface layer and coated during production to avoid any weaknesses in the installed floor. This prevents water from seeping through the bevels; the floor’s joints have the same quality as the individual boards’ surfaces, featuring the same watertight, anti-static and wearresistant top layer.

‘Add to that the Uniclic installation system with pre-tension, and you have yourself a true to nature laminate floor that stands up 100% to water and other liquids,’ he explains.

Pergo’s water-resistant laminate collection Sensation was introduced in 2016. ‘Similar to the waterproof QuickStep laminate collections, Sensation boards have bevels that are compressed during production and also a water-

repellent coating that eliminates weak points in the installed floors. Creating a fully sealed surface through installation under tension, the Uniclic and PerfectFold drop-down click technologies – for the long and short floor panel sides respectively – make up the third and final element of flawless watertightness,’ explains Meersseman.

Sales on the move Ordorite is to introduce a mobile POS function With digital marketing tools and communications being an integral part of any furniture business today, software firm Ordorite is to launch a mobile POS system this month.

The device will allow retailers to provide customers with a seamless and smooth transaction from any location in the store.

‘28% of retailers internationally are moving towards mobile POS as it provides a seamless and efficient customer experience,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo.

The firm will demonstrate the system at the Manchester Furniture Show, where it will also demonstrate a prototype of its mobile applications for delivery, route planning, and proof of delivery, for use by delivery drivers.

Due to the company’s success over the past few years across the UK, it is looking to recruit around 10 people in the next 18 months in sales, business development, training consultancy and implementation. It also plans to further expand its offices to areas such as Manchester.

‘The reception of our software has been extremely positive, with customers outlining the benefits of it being software specifically for the furniture industry and also having a fast and easy to use POS system, which allows salespeople to process sales quickly and efficiently and free up more time to spend building rapport with the customers,’ he says.

‘We have found customers are really embracing using the system as many retailers are moving from legacy systems or systems that are not specifically built for their industry, reducing the return on investment from them. We are successfully migrating people over from either old legacy systems or standard accounts systems, or having no system at all,’ adds Connolly.

The summer sunshine has got the creative juices flowing at Alpha Designs in the run up to the Manchester Furniture Show.

The company will be exhibiting for the fourth consecutive year and is eagerly awaiting the opening to share its enthusiasm for the latest upholstery collections.

The new ranges will continue to build

on its reputation for providing modern upholstery created for comfort in an array of on-trend fabrics.

DESIGN The Libertà chair, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1989, is considered a symbol of the Meritalia brand. It is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Louvre in Paris, for its genius. Two simple aluminium sheets opportunely shaped are folded to become a chair. Libertà has great personality and unique design.

Originally in anodised aluminium in black or natural colour, for 2017 there is a choice of painted aluminium in black, white or natural colour and gold leaf.

The Accademia storage unit, created by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1995.

Created in teak, it offers refinement in the rich definition of building details; the great care of planning architectural proportions; the elegant cultural condition which generated the idea clashes with the obvious functional simplicity of this object which is still designed to be a protagonist in any place. For 2017 it is available in bi-colours.

In 1987 Afra and Tobia Scarpa created Meritalia’s most iconic design: the Cesare armchair. From the soft yet precise lines, the product finds harmonious collocation with the latest cutting-edge products.

The bearing frame features a separate structure for the seat, back and armrests in electro-welded steel tube.

The back is flexible thanks to special harmonic steel leaf springs in the frame.

The seat and back springs are made of elastic crossed belts with padding in polyurethane of different densities and synthetic wadding. For this year a new size of armchair was added.

Icons During Milan Design Week, Meritalia hosted an exhibition of 30 of its most iconic designs at its Via Durini showroom to mark its 30th anniversary. Here are some of the key products.

Ice More by Vittorio Prato in 2008 built on the success of Iceberg. Defined in terms of dimensions as a basic module measuring 8cm, its recurrent measurement is its multiple, 24cm, that defines its modularity. The production method uses basic elements, making Ice More highly industrial and flexible for multiple compositions and with easily removable covers. For 2017 a new module available in central or angular versions was added along with variable depth depending on the side used as the backrest.

In 2013 Meritalia introduced the 1957 Cubo by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. ‘When we found ourselves in front of the choice to produce or not a design still unedited from the Castiglioni brothers we all looked each other in the eyes. We recognised in the look of each one of us the magic, the one that only histories of few designers are able to communicate.

Since the beginning in 1987, we always took care about innovation and research. Innovations and ideas, in projects and proposals. And a lot of research, especially in materials: here’s why Cubo looked like the right choice, the correct way to follow this in 2013 during which Meritalia wants, once again, to showcase projects that have a content and that are the result of serious work of someone who has something to say, something to communicate and launch in history, just like the Castiglioni brothers,’ said the company. For 2017 the original iron structure was replaced with aluminium to make the design lighter.

BUYING GROUPS

Setting the pace Members were in top gear at Greendale’s member event Fast cars and flooring were the order of the day at Greendale’s 2017 member event held at Mercedes Benz World and Brooklands Museum in Surrey last month. Members were greeted by an array of classic cars ranging from Jaguar E types, Ferrari and Aston Martin Exotica to a Lotus Cortina, Morris Minor Countryman and a Riley as the 29th London to Brighton Classic Car Run assembled at Brooklands.

The buying group’s event allowed members to take in the cars on show as well as talk business with almost 40 of the group’s suppliers all showing Greendale branded ranges alongside their own products. All the leading carpet companies were there along with rug suppliers, hard flooring, underlay and related accessories and services.

Members could also enjoy a lap as a passenger in a souped up Mercedes AMG. The track was in full view of the members in the first floor exhibition area. One lucky member was selected at random to accompany the Silver Arrows display team on their stunt show.

Greendale’s own exhibition area showed modern display stands with new imagery and many new carpet ranges all under the group’s own labelling. Suppliers included Brockway Carpets, Cormar, Ulster, Victoria, Whitestone Weavers, Witters, Abingdon, Edel Telenzo, Lano, Associated Weavers, Gaskell and Balta. New rug supplier Asiatic was there, along with Ramezani, Tribal Rugs and Westco.

Furlong’s new vinyl collection is available to members on a Greendale branded unit, while Coretec showed its cork backed, looselay LVT. Interfloor and Ball & Young demonstrated underlays while CAT showed off its edging products. Also showing were Mayne Computers, Woolsafe, British Wool, and BIRA – the independent retailer association to which all Greendale members belong as part of their membership.

After the group’s AGM a BBQ was held at the museum and members took the chance to look at an original Concorde.
