A happier New Year?

Consumers want more: shopping that provides entertainment. Would you shop at your store?

As I write this my inbox is swelling with the constant arrival of messages imploring me to have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Retailers across the country will certainly be wishing for the latter. Others, of course, will be hoping for clarity over their employment status.

2025 will not go down as a vintage year for the sector, with subdued sales causing consternation amid economic and social uncertainty.

There are reasons why 2026 will be a better year. The sofa and recliner that Mrs Johnson splurged on after pandemic lockdowns ended has seen better days, and the carpet and curtains she bought at the same time also need to be changed, for a start.

There is also a sense that shopping online may well have peaked (although it’s still going to be vital to all retailers), and consumers want to see and touch their major purchases, as well as finding out more about what is in them and where it has come from.

They also want to be entertained: shopping via screen isn’t really that much fun, and with interiors you can never be 100% sure that the colour your customers really want is the one they’ve seen on their phone, or its scale in relation to them, or how comfortable or hardwearing it might be.

Local to me, there have been a few closures of large (non-interiors) stores, with rent and business rates bills held responsible. Reaction has been generally of the ‘That’s a shame, there’s nothing on the high street now, it wasn’t very exciting last time I went’ type. If the visiting experience had been just that, those branches may still be open. Would you really like to shop at your store?

January, of course, also brings the return of trade shows, including Heimtextil, Domotex and January Furniture Show, while imm Cologne is back on the calendar. Hopefully I’ll see you at some of them.

Bird reveals ‘next chapter’ of Headlam turnaround Headlam is to further shake up its sales network, use trade counters more as collection points, restore local delivery planning and sales offices, and cut product SKUs by more than 40% to improve stock availability as part of its turnaround plan under the leadership of Stephen Bird, Headlam interim-executive chairman.

‘We haven’t provided the service that our independent customer deserves, and I'm very sorry for that. Because of the strategy that we pursued, we have lost some core independent flooring retail and contractor business, which is really important to us. Some of that was clearly self-inflicted, some was due to challenging marketing conditions, and some was down to a capable and aggressive competitor who has taken advantage of the

fact that we were distracted,’ says Bird, speaking exclusively to Interiors Monthly.

The shake-up of the sales team, which is subject to an ongoing redundancy consultation across the group, is set to see retailers have one rep covering both Mercado distributed products and Headlam brands. Crucial Trading and Florprotec will continue to have separate teams.

‘We are refocusing on independent retailers and contractors. We need to improve our service levels and provide a great, great proposition with the benefits of our purchasing power and range. We've had some positive and encouraging feedback from retailers. They now want to see action,’ he says.

Amanda Holden: comfortable with DFS

Just Husk Kitchen replacement company Husk has opened its first stand-alone store, and second after its factory showroom, on Bristol’s historic city centre Christmas Steps. The new site also houses office and meeting spaces across the upper floors, creating a central hub for the design and operations teams.

Husk makes made-to-order doors, cover panels, worktops and hardware for kitchen units from the likes of Ikea and Howdens.

‘From day one, the goal was to make beautifully made kitchens more accessible. Customers plan the layout with a mainstream supplier, then we craft the finishing elements that deliver the quality, detail and individuality of a bespoke kitchen,’ says Dave Young, Husk co-founder.

DFS is to widen its brand offer with an Amanda Holden collection this spring.

Working with the retailer’s design team and manufacturer The Branded Furniture Company, the broadcaster helped curate a collection that captures her love of luxury while staying true to family living.

‘I wanted a range that made me feel proud when hosting. Every style in the collection has those little touches that I love: a bit of glamour, a bit of fun, and loads of comfort,’ she says.

Revamp continues Harvey Jones has continued its refurbishment programme with the re-opening of its Guildford and Cambridge stores.

Guildford now features 11 of the chain’s most popular hand-crafted kitchen designs, along with a design lounge for customer consultations, media wall displays, corner pantry and cloakroom – part of Harvey Jones’ product expansion.

Cambridge has a design lounge, three kitchen displays, laundry area, coffee station, media unit and home office. Eight stores have now been revamped.

Ufurnish offers fans soap looks in ITV tie-up Consumers can now buy interior styles featured in top soap Emmerdale after furniture price comparison website ufurnish.com secured a deal with ITV to allow it to offer a Shop the Look facility for Emmerdale locations.

A curated section features room-by-room breakdowns of the show’s most famous sets, while shoppers can search for styles from Farmhouse Chic to Country Pub Classic and shop looks straight from the Emmerdale set.

Flagship reopens Roche Bobois has re-opened its Finchley Road, north London store – one of five in the city – after major renovations.

The more open and streamlined entrance highlights the double-height ceilings and creates a sense of fluidity throughout the space, inviting shoppers to explore the 7,530sqft of display space across two main floors and two partial mezzanines more naturally and intuitively.

Roche Bobois has 364 stores – both owned and franchised– in 54 countries.

Delivery promise A move to a new distribution centre will allow Furniture Village to offer quicker deliveries, according to the retailer.

It has opened the 168,000sqft centre next to its previous 96,000sqft unit in Milton Keynes. The investment will ‘double logistical capacity and support hundreds of existing and new jobs, while unlocking faster delivery times for customers, strengthen service nationwide and give the business the scale it needs to support rising order volumes.’

The new facility also has 16,000sqft of office space and a bespoke training facility.

‘Securing our new national distribution centre gives us the capacity and flexibility to keep pace with customer demand while investing in the future of our team. By increasing our fastdelivery stock and streamlining our operations, we’re able to offer customers a quicker, smoother experience from purchase to delivery, wherever they are in the UK,’ says David Ayers, Furniture Village operations director.

PBDE levels drop by half with flame-retardant-free upholstery Changing upholstery for flame-retardant-free versions sees concentrations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in the bloodstream drop by half in under a year and a half.

A study published in Environmental Pollution into the effects of the Californian flammability standards – which saw upholstery made from 1970–2014 resist open flames – found that participants who swapped saw their blood concentrations of PBDEs drop by half in 1.4 years.

Due to the overall declining use of these chemicals, levels in participants who did not replace furniture dropped as well, but two to four times more slowly, according to the study by California Department of Public Health and five others.

‘This study shows that the update not only changed what goes into furniture: it changed what goes into people’s bodies,’ says Kathleen Attfield, the study’s co-lead author and a research scientist supervisor at California Department

of Public Health. ‘Through biomonitoring, we can assess how policy changes and consumer choices can work together to lower exposures to toxic chemicals.’

The study also measured organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), a class of PBDE replacements also used to meet the old standard, but found that these chemicals did not follow the same trend: likely because these chemicals are harder to track over time, according to the study. In addition, people could also be exposed to OPFRs that continue to be used in other products like vehicles and electronics. The authors expressed concern about these uses, as OPFRs are also linked to neurodevelopmental and other harms.

Other ways to reduce flame-retardant exposure centre around dust and include washing hands often, especially before preparing or eating food, reducing dust levels in homes with wet cloths, and using a vacuum cleaner with a high-efficiency particulate air filter.

Gallery commission A Rum Fellow’s latest rug design is set to be seen by more than three million people a year. The retailer and supplier was commissioned to create a unique design for the bookshop in the newly renovated Sainsbury Wing at the National Gallery, London.

A Rum Fellow co-founder and creative director Caroline Lindsell’s design takes inspiration from the intricacy of the traditional tiled floor throughout the original galleries: in particular, the geometry, scale and natural formations within the marble and the juxtaposition of decorative craftsmanship with ironwork details.

MFI has seen ‘a very encouraging’ response from shoppers since its soft launch in the summer.

The brand remains on course for a full launch next July, and has an average Trustpilot score of 4.7.

Parent company Victorian Plumbing says MFI ‘is already demonstrating conversion rates in line with group benchmarks, validating our strategic approach.’

The product offer includes a selection of textiles, rugs, home decor and freestanding furniture. Victorian Plumbing says that it still expects MFI to lose £2.6m-£3.4m in 2025/2026 and investment ‘remains disciplined’.

The group also says that bathroom flooring and tiles now account for 6% of turnover, after sales jumped by 42% to £17.6m in the year to 30 September.

Dilemma Once a fault is found, it cannot be unfound.

But what to do?

One staple, and the customer hadn’t even noticed. It was underneath the leather on the front edge of the outside arm, and close to it were two tiny dimples in the leather that were not natural marks but had no obvious cause.

What should I do?

The customers were an elderly man and his wife. He was quiet and unassuming and quickly disappeared to a back room. The lady was forthright and was demanding a full refund for the two sofas that had been delivered some months before. She was angry that the seat cushions were stretching slightly after use, and when she explained how she had switched them around it wasn’t difficult to grade them in order, with the most puckered corresponding with the most used.

‘Most’ is a relative term: none of the cushions looked bad at all.

I did a full inspection of the sofas, even though I knew they were perfectly normal, but then I noticed the staple protruding under the leather, and the two faint marks. The staple had the potential – however unlikely – to wear through, and it was obvious enough to catch the lady’s eye at some stage. The marks were unlikely to be noticed. As usual, I said nothing at the time, but then had to reflect before I put pen to paper.

The staple was not part of the complaint. I could ignore it and hope it never got noticed and never became an issue. Conversely, if I noted it in the report, it would become a major issue to the customer from the moment she read about it and looked for it herself.

The fact that she hadn’t seen it in the first six months meant it was just a service issue and could not be made a reason for rejecting the suite, but I doubted that she knew, or would accept,

that. What’s more, I knew a repair would require removal of the arm, stripping of the cover and then a two-second tap with a hammer to drive the staple home before refixing the cover and arm.

A major job for such a minor issue.

What would you want, or expect, me to put in my report? Independent experts have to write reports as if they were to be used in court proceedings, even if no legal claim has been made. A consumer has the right to issue a claim at any point up to six years from delivery, sometimes more in special circumstances.

Omitting this discovery could have consequences later, and although there was a risk in raising it, if the matter got resolved the report could be used

later to show the customer had been made aware at this early stage and so there would be little if any ‘cause of action’ for this feature.

After much thought I felt I couldn’t leave the issue unmentioned, but needed to make clear it was hardly significant, hadn’t been spotted by the customer and was unlikely to cause any long-term issue. This left it open for the retailer to offer a repair, or to offer a guarantee that if it developed into something more serious they would offer a repair at a later date.

Keiran Hewkin on turning six, physical stores and listening to customers Don’t be surprised if 2026 is the year that etailers increasingly make physical store debuts or expansions, following the likes of Swyft, Sofa Club and Love Your Home.

‘The businesses that have been digital first have taken a while to mature to the point in which they’re butting up against the sides of the ecommerce market. Businesses in the most part need to grow in to be healthy. And when you come up against some limitations on that growth, you start looking elsewhere,’ says Keiran Hewkin, Swyft ceo.

Originally an upholstery etailer, cabinet and rugs now account for a fifth of sales, and outdoor furniture was added to the mix as Swyft celebrated its sixth birthday on 15 December.

‘You will see a lot more physical stores, as that cohort of businesses matures and realises there is a limit to how much discovery can be done by customers.

Online is great for transactions, fantastic for ease, but it’s not great for discovery –

eventually everyone gets that same realisation. Especially with something as tactile as furniture that you just want to touch and feel.’

Some Swyft customers have had the opportunity to do that through concessions in John Lewis since 2021, but there was no Swyft store until October when Islington, north London saw the launch of Store 01.

‘I was always very much of the opinion that as our range has grown, we needed our own space. We started the expansion with real vigour in the second half of 2024, so you have the breadth to justify a larger space of your own. And then it was a case of, okay, we know we want to do it. We know we’ve got the product range, that means we could fill it without it looking too sparse, and we could get the revenue per square foot up. Now, let’s look out for the right opportunity, and be ready to go whenever that opportunity presents itself, because we, well, I’m very aware

that our first store couldn’t be a failure.

‘So, we knew where we wanted it to be, we knew what kind of economics would have made sense, and then it was just about being patient. We were waiting for the right opportunity for about nine months until it came up, then when it did, we went from telling them we’re interested to opening the store in about four-and-a-half weeks.

‘You have to be very careful on that first one, it would have taken us a long time to go again had the first one failed.

I take huge risks all the time, that’s my job, but on some you just want to make sure you’ve given yourself every chance of success. You don’t get a second chance on the first one, do you? It all had to go right and it has. It’s been fantastic.

‘The market is tough. We’ve done probably three times more than we expected in our forecast. We’re already confident that the store’s profitable, incremental, and is helping as a halo on the ecommerce side. We figured

out all the bits and bobs on how to replenish it and how to run it and how to staff it. We’re really, really pleased. It’s been a fantastic result.’

November – the first month of being an online and physical retailer – saw sales 51% higher, and Hewkin expects the full year to be up 30% at more than £31m.

‘We’re profitable. So, we’re happy with that, obviously. To be able to grow at that speed and still have a bit left at the end is good, because growth is very expensive. It’s so competitive this market.

If you’re growing, you’re having to muscle someone else out.

‘Our bestselling SKU is now a dining chair. The money’s nice, right? But, actually, it’s more about the customer giving the brand permission to go and sell something else, and for them to say “Yes, I’m confident enough in Swyft as a brand to buy my dining table there.”

And that’s what I’m most happy about.

‘We’ve done a small buy of outdoor and a small range to start with. We’ll check we’ve got the permission from the customer, check we can deliver it.

But it will be the next big category for us. Generally speaking, outdoor furniture looks pretty ugly. And the delivery proposition can be pretty iffy. I think we can make something that’s beautiful and put it through our next-day proposition, so that when the British sunshine decides to come out for a weekend, on a Friday morning, we can get it to you on the Saturday. Our operation plays into it, and if we can stamp our design authority on something, then we’re up for it.’

has bought or is buying their first property, where both are professionals and have a household income of more than £130,000. Very close is the same shopper a decade older, on their second home, or upgrading their first home.

‘We’re quite first-time buyer dependent, and they tend to move and behave slightly differently to the rest to movers, because the pressure to get your first home is consistent, regardless of the economic environment. I don’t care what interest rates are, you don’t want to be sleeping in the room next door to your in-laws for a day longer than you have to, whereas when you’re a mover and a shaker, you optimise because can you put up with having a smaller garage for another year? The whole sector is interest-rate dependent. But I think if I had to pick one, I would probably settle as being overexposed to first-time buyers. I think it’s a little bit easier.

‘You get through the pool of people that are comfortable with buying a high-ticket piece of upholstery online, and you need to continue to grow, and it’s not enough to just be talking to those people that are comfortable with it. You have to meet your customers where they’re at, and if that’s in physical retail, then so be it.’

Given that Swyft’s average sofa sale online is £1,600, viewing is the preferred option for most customers.

‘That’s why most businesses end up maturing to offline. We need access to a wider pool of people. And that’s why we’ve done it. “Where can I see it?” was the top question asked by our customers on live chat for the last two years, every

single week bar about three, so we just listened. We thought, hang on, they might be on to something here. It’s gone down very well, so, the radical thought of the day is listen to your customers.’

Store 02 is very likely to be this year, but location is undecided.

‘Now we’ve got Islington we can say, the samples that go out to N1, what do they convert at? What about SW19, how many samples go? If we just lifted the conversion rate to match Islington, how much would that be worth to us?

We haven’t done that analysis, and we’re fairly well served with the John Lewis concessions in London, so we could maybe go somewhere like Edinburgh, Glasgow or Manchester where we don’t have the same coverage.’

Swyft is spending about a fifth of revenue on marketing, and Hewkin thinks this will remain.

‘This industry so competitive. Everyone is marketing margin away. So I would anticipate it probably won’t go much higher than that. But the costs now, as we roll stores out, will be another line, and it’ll be in property and staff rather than marketing. I imagine that’ll always add up to around 20% because that’s what most people spend overall and that’s what you have to spend to compete because you use the same tools to target the same people.

‘One thing we’ve had quite a bit of success with recently, which is new to us, is out of home. We’ve been advertising on the tube and buses and we’ve seen a real lift in consideration. More so than spending the next pound on Facebook or Google. That’s worked really

well, and a bit of direct mail as well and flyers for people’s houses just after they move: what’s working well is the stuff that’s always worked. I do wonder if people are just a little bit done with digital advertising, and that maybe there’ll be a slight shift back towards old school.’

Swyft expanded online to Continental Europe in February, where its access to Polish upholstery production should have been a key advantage in Germany, followed by Switzerland and Austria.

But German tastes and its logistics sector had not been fully allowed for.

‘We thought that would be more of an advantage than it has. The reason is that the product that’s gone down really well for us in Germany is our dining collection. It’s over half of the sales there, and we import that from the Far East.

So, we have that wonderful advantage, and then the customers have gone: “Oh yeah, great, but by the way, we like your dining chairs.” So, we’ve had to scramble to get enough of those in.

‘We’ve got to where we’d expected from a top-line point of view, I just never would have expected it to be in dining tables and chairs. The most important learning was that once you’re out of the UK, the freight and logistics network is nowhere near as good. The UK has extremely well-serviced freight and lastmile operations. Germany doesn’t so much. So, we’ve only just launched the next-day service in Germany, and that was in partnership with AIT who do our UK next-day service, so we launched that in Germany together. We’ve taken that whole proposition with them because no one there could do it with us.

‘We haven’t brought that back to the UK as learning as such, but when we launched in Ireland in May, we were able

to translate that learning into the Irish market: that helped us get ahead on the challenges we were going to have.

Underestimating the strength of the UK logistics network was not something on my bingo card last January, but it’s definitely proven to be true.’

As with any business, mistakes have been made. ‘We launched a made to order offering that was not good. We shouldn’t have done it, we should have kept to the essence of the brand, which was from inventory and fast. We thought it would expand our proposition and allow us to offer more choice, and instead it just confused customers because we had stuff on one lead time and stuff on another. We should never have done that. That’s a big one.

‘We’ve got some designs wrong: 70% of our product has been real hits and 30% hasn’t. So, there’s loads there we could learn from. They were big mistakes.

Despite those, Hewkin’s expectations in 2019 have long been surpassed.

‘Not in my wildest dreams did I ever believe that Swyft was getting to where it’s been. Its been the privilege of my life.

Every day I am grateful to get to come to work and build this company, because this has been wild. There is something about Swyft… whatever it is, Swyft’s got it, and it’s like lightning in a bottle.

I don’t know how to describe it or bottle it up and to move it on to another idea: we’re just having our moment in time, and it’s a wonderful thing to be a part of.

‘It was me and some good friends with an idea, and that idea got out of hand, really quickly, and now Swyft is what it is, and it’s a wonderful thing to have been a part of.’

Not that he plans to leave. ‘I’ll ride this wave as long as it carries me, and as long as the people around me will have me.’

Next chapter Retailers want to see results from Headlam’s change of leadership and strategy In October, Stephen Bird moved from Headlam non-executive chairman to interim-executive chairman, as part the group’s move to breathe new life into its transformation plan and repair relations with its core customer base: independent retailers and contractors.

In his only media interview, Bird and John Clark, Headlam sales director, discuss what went wrong; listening to customers again; and shaping Headlam's next chapter.

‘I want us to get back to what we're good at, which is looking after the independent retailer. We lost a bit of that entrepreneurial flair, and we became a bit too corporate. We became a bit too strategic, and we brought in people who lacked experience in the flooring market – very capable people, but who didn’t understand what makes the

independent retailer tick,’ says Bird.

‘We lost our way a bit. We were chasing key account business, which wasn’t particularly profitable. We opened too many trade counters. Some of the counters worked well with supporting independent retailers, but others didn't, and I can understand that if you're an independent retailer, in a very difficult market, and Headlam opens a trade counter near you, it can be annoying because it looks like we were opening a competitive activity. We didn’t open trade counters to compete with our independent retailers.’

The switch from a sales rep covering one brand over a large area to one rep for several brands across a smaller area will be simplified further: retailers will only have one rep covering both Mercado distributed products and

Headlam Brands, if the proposal is in place when Headlam’s redundancy consultation process ends. Crucial Trading and Florprotec will continue to have separate sales teams due to their bespoke nature. The sales team will remain the country’s largest. (Until the consultation process is complete, the group is unable to comment further.)

‘Retailers were inundated with our reps at various times of the day. To simplify it for customers, we’ll give them one rep, who can keep enhancing that relationship with our customers, many of whom they've known for years.

This business is all about relationships.

It's a very traditional industry, and we've got to keep giving customers what they want. First of all, listen to them. Five or six reps knocking on their door throughout the week with pretty much the

same samples was an absolute waste of their time and ours. It was inefficient all around,’ says Clark.

Deliveries will revert to how they were, with regular drivers and localised route planning, rather than ‘optimised’ central route planning. This should be in place in mid-January, with local sales offices returning later in the month.

‘We’ve put the control back into the local distribution centre. A driver will go on the same route every day, which is what we used to do, so we can build up that rapport with our customers. Our driver is as valuable to our business as our rep because they have regular contact with our customers. I totally agree with that. I’ve been out to a lot of customers, and the thing that was clear was how important the driver is. It’s so important that the truck turns up at the right time, that the driver knows when our customers’ shop is open, can help with unloading and is generally a decent person,’ says Bird.

‘We’ve got great drivers. The centralised route planning system didn’t know when our customer opened, didn't know particularly what the customer

wanted and didn’t ensure that the same driver went back to the same customer.

It's small customer challenges like our central planning system that John has identified and addressed. When you take a lot of those little nuances away from retailers, it all becomes a big thing all the time.’ Another topic resolved is customer credit.

SKUs will be reduced from 26,000 to 15,000, mainly through reducing

duplication, especially in carpet. Hard flooring ranges will be increased to address historic gaps. As well as making it simpler for retailers, slow-turning products will be removed to ensure that the company can hold more fasterturning products that matter most to retailers. The supplier base is also being consolidated to concentrate volume, with a concentration on a smaller number of long-term partners, improving

But this is a great job, and for someone, I think it'll be quite exciting. We've got a couple of very interested candidates. We are in a good position where we've interviewed two candidates, both of whom want to do the job, both of them are very capable and have got the relevant experience. It should be very exciting for them and the team that we've got running the business. I would like to continue as chairman and support the successful candidate.’

commercial terms and service consistency. ‘‘We buy more flooring in Europe than anyone else. We buy a lot more than most of our competitors put together.

That will start to feed through, with competitive pricing for independents in a way that we haven't been able to do.

So, hopefully, that's part of why working with Headlam in the future will be attractive,’ says Bird.

‘We don’t need as many ranges as we have previously offered, but we do need the right depth available to customers.

When they pick up the phone they want the answer: “Yes, it’s in stock.” When you've got 26,000 SKUs, that's a lot of stock you've got to have in the network to service everybody. You can overfill the market with too much product.

Customers want the right service, and that's what matters to us. It's a rationalisation, but still the biggest in the marketplace, and a greater depth of stock – that's where we need to be,’ says Clark.

‘We haven’t provided the service that our independent customer deserves, and I'm very sorry for that. Because of the strategy that we pursued, we have lost some core independent flooring

retail and contractor business, which is really important to us. Some of that was self-inflicted, some was due to challenging marketing conditions, and some was down to a capable and aggressive competitor who’s taken advantage of the fact that we were distracted,’ says Bird.

‘We are refocusing on independent retailers and contractors. We’re not out chasing volume with big national retailers any more. We’re pausing what we’re doing on trade counters and repositioning them so they’ll become more like collection points. And then,

most importantly, we need to improve our service levels and provide a great, great proposition with the benefits of our purchasing power and range. We’ve got excellent brands, which fit all price points, and with John’s help, we can get back to having a sales team and drivers that our customer know well and can rely on. It’s not that difficult. It’s not rocket science. But it is a big change for Headlam. We’ve had some positive and encouraging feedback from retailers.

They now want to see action.’

STEPHEN BIRD ON EXECUTIVE CHANGES: ‘The business has been losing money for some time. The board have been monitoring where we are, very carefully, and the executive team were, obviously doing their best.

The success of the strategy was somewhat dependent on the market recovery: Headlam only started to make money if the market recovered. We were concerned, we'd been concerned for some time. In the spring and early summer we started to see that recovery. Unfortunately, the market became more challenging over the summer, and we decided to take action.

‘The change in strategy’s been very well received [by shareholders]. And obviously, one of the questions is: “Why didn’t you do this quicker?” We should have, we should have probably taken these challenges quicker, but we didn't, and we are where we are.

But the reaction from our customers and shareholders has been very positive.’

The Eterio chair, by Sancho Martín Merino, evokes the formal purity and continuous line of Classic Modernism. Its tubular and curved structure, which supports the upholstered seat, subtly recalls the Bauhaus line and the design of Marcel Breuer (such as the Wassily chair), where the material – in this case, the structure that embraces softness – becomes the defining skeleton of the piece. Eterio translates that geometric discipline into an organic and contemporary sensibility.

Caitlin Kao’s Alis bench is part of the tradition of biomorphic design and free forms. The segmented, tubular, exaggerated and primary colour forms refer to the radical and ironic design of the 1970s in Italy, such as the Studio Alchimia collective or Gaetano Pesce’s work, which use playful, even kitsch forms to challenge the established. The Noodle is a cheerful transgression, a piece with a conceptual and very powerful wink.

The NBF continues to deliver support, leadership and industry collaboration for retailers and manufacturers The National Bed Federation continues to deliver impactful support, leadership and industry collaboration, reinforcing its role as the leading and most influential voice for the UK and Irish bed sector, despite ongoing challenges in the industry.

The cost-of-living crisis has led to a surge in unknown bed and mattress brands targeting consumers, which is likely to continue in 2026. These could be imported mattresses that are fallout from the US tariffs placed on Chinese products and may not meet UK safety standards, or perhaps more worryingly, from much closer to home.

NBF consumer research in 2025 found that purchasing beds from the back of a van had declined; however, unscrupulous traders are now luring in consumers using flashy social media ads and online marketplaces to attract unsuspecting buyers. These activities damage the reputation of reputable

bed retailers and manufacturers by creating the false impression that high-specification products can be bought at much lower prices.

This is why the message of buying from a reputable bed retailer that stocks NBF-approved member brands is more important than ever. At the core

of NBF membership is adherence to its Code of Practice, with the sixth edition being published this month.

The CoP requires manufacturer members to pass an audit with strict requirements, and sets out criteria to ensure processes and procedures are in place for supply-chain scrutiny and regulatory compliance. As part of the CoP, the NBF has a due diligence random testing programme, which ensures it checks NBF members for ongoing compliance and not just at the time of the audit. It also purchases non-member products as part of the programme and shares the results with its primary authority partner, West Yorkshire Trading Standards.

WYTS conducts its own investigations, often visiting manufacturing sites to provide expert advice, or if necessary,

initiate legal proceedings against the business. If the company in question is outside West Yorkshire, it contacts the relevant trading standards authority to follow up.

Consumer education remains a priority to help tackle ruthless traders from the other side of the coin. The association has significantly increased its consumer scams awareness education, highlighting the benefits of buying NBF-approved brands from reputable retailers and the dangers of not doing so. To solidify its commitment to this, the NBF will have a new dedicated consumer campaign later this year.

To further support retailers, it introduced a new level of benefits to the Retail Champions Scheme last summer. In addition to the free package, which includes a listing on the NBF’s

consumer website bedadvice.co.uk and a POS pack, the enhanced package takes business support to the next level, starting from £250 a year for small retailers. ‘The education being provided here is incredibly valuable: not just for compliance, but for building genuine, responsible businesses,’ says Matthew Randle, Dreamland Bedding Centre general manager.

Those who have signed up have benefitted from in-depth information on the latest product legislation, expert support and advice on HR, health and safety, legal, and tax and VAT issues, annual NBF consumer bed-buying research, discounted City & Guilds training, sustainability insights, and the Bed Show’s first VIP lounge.

Sustainability continues to remain a focus during 2026, with work required on digital product passports to support the ESPR (Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation). To further assist NBF members on their sustainability journeys, a comprehensive NBF Sustainability Guide will strengthen existing guidance, such as the freely available Ecodesign Principles and NBF Chemical Claims Guide. The NBF Pledge for Our Planet will also be refreshed to keep members on track.

The NBF has been researching how the industry can measure the cleanliness of reused and recycled materials from beds and mattresses, through its Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University. Circularity is critical to the future of the bed industry and the planet, and the test will be launched with NBF members later this year.

The special feature of this skirting is that it can be punched, which saves a lot of time during processing and at the same time ensures precise processing

quality. Inside is a stable MDF core, fully coated with polypropylene. During punching, the extruded film remains completely intact. The result is clean, closed corners for optimum protection.

The soft sealing lips ensure a perfect connection to the wall and floor and guarantee reliable protection against moisture and dust. ‘This makes our core skirting board suitable for use in bathrooms and kitchens. The waterproof version is the safe choice, as its sealed cut edges make it the best solution for damp rooms,’ says Mihaly Bakti, Neuhofer application engineer.

Marcello Ziliani turned to brass for Thaïs ‘It’s clear that designing objects that must deal with severe environmental conditions requires particular attention.

When my team and I think of a lighting fixture intended for outdoor use, we think of it in that context from the very beginning, so that the formal and functional elements naturally emerge from the related constraints and specifications. For me, form and function are inseparable, even if not always distributed in equal measure: in Thaïs they are very well balanced,’ says Marcello Ziliani, on his light for Platek.

Designing Thaïs was a technical challenge, given that its main functional characteristic is a lighting head containing all the necessary elements for its operation (LED cluster,

‘When we started developing the first concepts, we jokingly imagined “a hole with light around it,’ says Ziliani.

‘Platek’s product development department did a wonderful engineering job. We managed to keep the very slim

cross-section, which was the main formal objective, and to integrate everything inside this elegant disc while concealing all technical elements,’ he adds.

‘It’s a bit strange to talk about innovative solutions inspired by a material – brass – whose use dates back to the stone age and that is generally associated with a “classic” vocabulary.

But this is precisely the magic of Thaïs, because this ancient material finds a new dimension in the stone-washed surface finish, unprecedented for this type of application, but also in the characteristic of being left unprotected, so that it can age and change over time, gradually acquiring the burnished patina that bears witness to its life.’
