Something for nothing The attempt to take control of a company without actually paying anything for it would be laughable if it wasn’t serious The efforts of what has been called ‘the consortium’ to take control of Victoria Carpets without paying anything is one of the odder stories in the interiors sector for many a year (see p6).

The group obviously takes the view that things should be done differently at the carpet manufacturer, but rather than come up with the money to bid for the company, it wants to gain a majority on the board by replacing the non-executive directors – and not pay a penny.

If the consortium didn’t think its plan might succeed, it would be a laughable idea that Victoria shareholders would simply hand over control – especially to a group that hasn’t said anything about what it would do differently. As Alan Bullock, Victoria group

md says, if it wants control it should make an offer.

With the retail recession claiming more victims it looks like there will plenty of space for Mary Portas to try her high street rescue plans. How we shop today is very different from the ‘golden age’ of high streets filled with independent retailers or even a few years ago. With retail sales growth halving every decade since the 1970s and the growth of online shopping, we were bound to get to the point where there were too many stores.

If the Government wants to help the retail sector it could demonstrate this by cutting business rates and outlawing leases with upward only rent reviews, rather than hanging on the skirts of Portas for a quick bit of PR. Sadly I can’t see it happening anytime soon.

One rather obvious point in the report is that shoppers really do value service that they cannot get elsewhere. This has to be the thing that differentiates successful retailers from their competition this year. Carpet Foundation members were able to maintain sales at 2010’s level last year by emphasising service, rather than slashing prices (see p15), so it can work.

Victoria attacks consortium’s ‘no bid’ takeover attempt Victoria Carpets has accused a consortium, including a former director, of trying to gain control of the manufacturer without making a bid for it.

Victoria says it expects the consortium, which includes former director Alexander Anton, to ‘imminently’ ask for a general meeting for the purpose of replacing the nonexecutive directors with candidates of their own.

‘The consortium’s own preferred candidates would represent a majority of the board and therefore control the day to day management of the company. The board strongly believes this action is both without merit and an unwelcome distraction for the operational management team and the business as a whole,’ it said in a statement to shareholders just before Christmas.

Victoria says it has spoken to major shareholders who indicated they did not welcome the consortium’s approach.

The statement continued: ‘The consortium has not yet met the board or given any reason why the board should consider its demand to change the board’s composition. It is the board’s view that the consortium is attempting to take control of the company without offering shareholders any value for their shares.

‘If the consortium is looking to acquire control of the company for its own purposes, as appears to be the case, the consortium should be tendering a bid that truly represents the full value of the business and the board would then have a duty to consider this.

‘The existing board truly believes that it has a strong commercial transformational strategy for the business which as yet has not been fully unveiled to stakeholders due to commercial sensitivities.’

The group has a capitalisation of £20.5m, but the board says this doesn’t recognise the value of the company and is ‘at a considerable discount to the net asset value of the company.’

Homemaker revived as Mooreways in Exmouth The former Homemaker branch in Exmouth, Devon has been reopened as Mooreways by its former manager, James Moore.

Moore raised £60,000 to reopen the store after a year of planning. Five of the 14 employees are former colleagues.

‘From my four years as manager, I knew that the Exmouth branch was the most profitable store in the South West region which meant there was a golden business opportunity for someone. In a similar way to the Woolworths revival in

Dorchester, Dorset, the revival of Homemaker as Mooreways in Exmouth demonstrates there is another way of running a high quality furniture store – as an independent business,’ says Moore.

‘Customers can expect a similar style and product range to the one they had at Homemaker – only better. I have brought high quality, branded products into the business so that people can feel confident about what they’re buying.’

The store was part of the Virgo Retail group that failed in May 2010.

Dwell heads for Wales Furniture, flooring and kitchen chain Dwell is to open its first store in Wales.

The chain will open a 5,343sqft store in Cardiff’s St David’s shopping centre next March, which will be its 19th branch.

‘We have spent a lot of time researching the area and feel this is the ideal location for us within the scheme,’ says Ashley Medway, Dwell, head of property.

‘Over the last few months we have watched the Upper Grand Arcade [in the centre] flourish and as our business continues to grow successfully it’s now the perfect time for us to join the centre.’

Carpetright axes dividend again as it falls into the red Carpetright has cancelled paying a dividend for the second time after dropping into the red.

Not paying the interim dividend for the half year to 29 October follows the decision not to pay a full year dividend for 2010/2011 and saves the chain £10.8m.

A pre-tax loss of £800,000 compares with a profit of £9.8m as group sales dropped by 3.9% to £238.4m in the period. In the UK, operating profits tumbled from £11.3m to £800,000 as sales fell by 5.6% to £192.1m with like-for-like sales down 2.4%. Gross margins dropped from 62.3% to 58%.

‘Like many other retailers we are continuing to experience a very challenging trading environment, with significant sales volatility and a corresponding decrease in the gross margin. Against this backdrop, the group has remained profitable on an underlying basis and continues to generate net cash,’ says Lord Harris, executive chairman.

‘With the consumer environment expected to remain difficult, we are focusing on those opportunities that are under our direct control. We have reduced our total cost base in the first half and will continue to take a determined approach to reducing this further.’

He says the development of the beds business with a new management team offers a significant growth opportunity and the imminent launch of its improved bed offer gives it

confidence in improving the group’s performance in the remainder of the year.

In addition, he says it will continue to offer the best prices for floorcoverings by adapting ranges and promotional activity and working with suppliers to reduce the level of margin investment in the second half.

The company also plans to roll out its improved laminate offer to around 200 stores by its financial year end.

‘We are confident that the combination of these factors will underpin an improved trading performance for the group in the second half and our expectations for the year as a whole are unchanged,’ says Lord Harris.

‘Although we anticipate the economic environment will remain challenging for the foreseeable future, we believe the group is in a strong position to capitalise on a strong value offer supported by a superior service proposition, when consumer demand in our sector improves.’

Meanwhile Ian Woosey, IT and ecommerce director, has been made redundant after almost a decade at the chain.

‘Following a review of our future requirements and an internal reorganisation, the role of group IT and ecommerce director has been made redundant,’ says the group.

Woosey pioneered Carpetright’s ecommerce and multichannel initiatives and developed its online business.

Delay to business rate rise deferral promise Businesses will not be able to defer in April most of the biggest business rates rise in more than 20 years – despite the chancellor’s promise.

George Osborne said in the Autumn Statement that companies would be able to defer up to 60% of the 5.6% increase over two years. However, the legislation needed for this to occur will not be in place in time for the April increase.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has told local authorities to charge companies the full increase. ‘The legislation required to allow the deferral will not be enacted until next year. Therefore, we are not expecting ratepayers to be able to defer from the start of the billing year,’ it said.

This will see companies receive multiple bills.

Jerry Schurder, head of ratings at chartered surveyors Gerald Eve, says: ‘It will be October to November before they start implementing it so businesses will have to pay the full increase to start with and then each one will have a claim to make. They will have to work out if the cash flow benefit is worthwhile enough that it makes sense to jump through all the hoops they will have to jump through over the next three years.’

Sales rose in the 11 weeks to 15 December

United looks to conserve cash United Carpets has seen an upturn in recent weeks but has again cancelled its interim dividend to save money after a fall in bed sales and taking more franchise stores under corporate control in the previous half.

Sales in the 11 weeks to 15 December rose 4.4%, although this does compare with 2010’s weather affected period. Within this flooring sales were 4.9% higher and bed sales down 2.1%. This compares with a rise of 0.2% and a fall of 11.7% respectively in the six months to 30 September. Turnover was £34.86m, up 1.9%, but pre-tax profits fell from £604,000 to £267,000.

The group said it was reviewing paying the full-year dividend which was worth £611,000 last year.

Profits take a tumble at DFS Profits at DFS dropped by more than 40% in the past quarter after a double-digit fall in sales. The upholstery chain saw sales decline by 14.3% to £128.2m in the quarter to 29 October, with profits down 42.8% to £8.7m.

‘As we anticipated, we have seen a continuation of the weak demand that began in the second half of our last financial year and was particularly evident during August.

We also entered the current financial year with a smaller order bank than in 2010, principally as the result of our own work to reduce delivery lead times for our customers,’ says Ian Filby, DFS chief executive.

‘Although we expect no early improvement in the trading environment, we are confident that DFS has the right

strategy, proposition and team to manage the business through these tough conditions,’ he says.

Having opened seven branches and expanded its manufacturing capacity in the quarter, Filby confirmed it plans seven store openings in the current financial year.

‘The current investment in new stores and manufacturing will continue to drive our market share and we will also focus on margin, costs and cash generation to deliver a good financial performance over the year as a whole,’ he adds.

Filby previously said customers were looking to trade up but growth was restricted due to issues with consumer credit availability.

Turners plans a seventh store Clearance chain Turners Furniture is looking to continue its expansion after opening its sixth store.

The company, founded in 1976 by Mike Turner, opened its sixth store in the Pride Hill shopping centre in Shrewsbury last month.

‘This new store will create four jobs and is in addition to the five stores we already have. Things are going very well for the company and our staff and delivery drivers have been extremely busy,’ says Turner. ‘There’s a lot of passing

trade. It’s a very busy area. We’ve only just moved in but we’re very pleased with how it’s going.

Turner says the firm has taken on 20 staff in the past three months.

He adds: ‘We’ve got plans for a big development within Shrewsbury which would bring another store and another 20 staff,’ he says.

If the expansion goes ahead, the store should open in the New Year.

The chain operates as a clearance outlet for end of line or surplus stock.

Hunter Douglas, a world leader in window coverings, has added to its huge portfolio of companies with the acquisition of Integra, a UK distributor of packaged window covering products and drapery hardware.

Integra, which has its headquarters in Tamworth, has annual sales of about £9m and employs 20 people.

Terms were not disclosed.

Hunter Douglas says it will combine Integra with its UK Sunflex division.

The group is made up of 168 companies and had sales of £1.56bn in 2010.

Sales growth for Laura Ashley Laura Ashley has seen like-for-like sales growth of 1.4% in the 19 weeks to 10 December, with growth of 2.5% for the year to date.

The figures were helped by the closure of five unprofitable stores, which saw total sales fall by 1.7%.

Online sales increased by 9%, boosted by the introduction of a full upholstery and made to measure curtain range to its website.

Banish the high street blues in 2012 As a retailer, one could be forgiven for approaching 2012 with trepidation. Headlines such as ‘Bloodbath on high street’, ‘Last hurrah for struggling stores’ and ‘High street braced for painful New Year’ were commonplace over the festive period. Some big high street names are apparently teetering on the brink with several chains allegedly missing quarterly rent payments that were due on Boxing Day. There could be hundreds more vacant shops on already empty high streets.

But throughout it all the independent flooring retailer continues, by and large, to buck the trend. Often with one shop, so with not overly excessive and disproportionate high fixed costs, they are able to manage the business, adapt to changing consumer habits and incomes and, most important, maintain their margins and avoid discounting.

As the Queen of the high street, Mary Portas, says: ‘It doesn’t matter what state the economy is in, people will always respond to brilliant service, genuine expertise and a quality product.’ She

also says that ‘independent retailers really give our high streets their special identities’.

At a time when purchases are considered, consumers increasingly prefer to spend their money in local shops, with local people – who, in many cases are pillars of the local community – rather than in large, faceless retailers.

At the Carpet Foundation we have a vested interest in the well-being of independent retailers and are greatly encouraged that in the 11 months to the end of November 2011, sales among our 900 independent retailers were literally like for like on 2010.

There is clearly an increasing desire for consumers to connect with their local area, and supporting local business has become more important than ever before. Tough economic conditions have forced consumers to reconsider their values and place real value on local communities, local businesses and local people.

Britain was famed for being ‘a nation of shopkeepers’ and while it will not be easy, and much will depend on consumers’ willingness to spend, independent flooring retailers do have an opportunity, and story, to banish the high street blues.

Talent search Sourcing online provides opportunities for fresh design

Online shopping’s popularity is not slowing and the Internet is also increasingly being used to source products from up and coming designers.

One problem with the Internet is knowing where to look when trying to source products from new designers, but Rezodesign is trying to solve that issue.

‘Rezodesign is a professional tool designed to connect talented and emerging designers with professionals all over the world. We showcase a high quality selection of new design, available for production or already produced,’ says Romain Bourgeais, Rezodesign owner.

Thus, bringing the audience into a different perspective of an object that has a picture of playful, desirable, and different looks.’

Groupa Design Studio Groupa Design Studio’s Hugs & Kisses console table is designed to give ‘a feeling of a warm and close hug,’ according to co-founder Chen Guiterman.

Groupa Design Studio consists of three Israeli industrial designers – Eran Shimshovitz, Yiffa Levin and Guiterman. After graduation from the Holon Institute of Technology, each took their own path while sharing a dream to one day work together. In 2010 their paths crossed again and they formed GDS. ‘As a result of our diverse experience, the studio offers a wide range of design services, from product design, to interior and venue design, furniture and lighting design, styling and illustrations. At the same time the studio is developing independent product collections and takes part in design exhibitions in Israel and abroad.’

‘My project development has always aimed at solving everyday problems taking care of the emotional aspects, and at nurturing my intuitions,’ says Luigi Semeraro. ‘I am inspired by everyday life events that allow me to detect potentialities that have not yet been disclosed in any of the routine happenings.

‘A coffee table, pouffe and support for laptops, the multipurpose Duetto starts from a simple, young and contemporary gesture: you take the laptop from the table and rest it on your legs, which comfortably stretch on the pouffe,’ he says.

The external half is made of oak, walnut curved wood-veneer or lacquered finish with scratchresistant coating, while the other has a soft cover.

Nicolas Stadler ‘Meals have moved to the living room since the TV has invaded our everyday life and many people take their meals now in front of their screen,’ says Nicolas Stadler of his LTB coffee table for Roche Bobois, designed in 2007. ‘There was no adaptation of the furniture, everything must be put away and people are doubled up, bent on their coffee table. LTB offers an unchanging central core where everything can be put when one wants to take a meal or have a new activity.

The adjustable shelves give a level of comfort to this object which can easily compete with a classical table.’

Thomas Schnur Thomas Schnur’s Bench chair takes its inspiration from the classic Monobloc chair but puts the associations that any chair evokes into a new context.

‘Its curved shape is contorted into a voluminous body, thereby creating an abstract space, such that observers are confronted with a transformed hybrid. It is as simple to manufacture as the Monobloc: a rotational moulding process means the Bench chair can be serially produced,’ he says.

‘In my projects I always attempt to negotiate with the product I am to design. I negotiate on the weighting of materials, manufacturing, appearance, meaning and function. I break down this task into its characteristics and meanings. I then analyse, assess and construct the idea. In this, it is important to me that despite their cross-references, the products, which are often created from familiar fragments, are able to develop the greatest possible degree of autonomy. In this way, they allow for associations but, beyond this, develop their own potential for becoming autonomous products.’

Leïla Chouikh is an industrial designer based in London with a keen interest in furniture and product development.

‘My approach to design draws on observation from daily life but also from a growing interest in creatively using machinery, factories and production constraints. Working closely with craftsmen and manufacturers and with my flair for forms and enhancing usability, I produce objects that are relevant in today’s market by their high value for an affordable cost and intelligent detailing,’ she says.

‘Light weight and cost efficient, the expanded metal used in the Extended Mesh table is a material that allows air flow for laptop computers and cable management solutions.

Used with a system of clamping bolts, accessories such as lights and shelves can be located to the user’s convenience.

The use of expanded metal is also reminiscent of the common fine mesh office tidy, but the change of scale changes our perception of these objects.’

Chouikh’s Hoffmann Series is a small range of domestic furniture produced by individuals with autism at the Hoffmann Foundation for Autism in north London. The series is accomplished using accurate jigs, straightforward tasks and simple joints, which are repeated throughout the various stages of the production. The design allows for small variations and the jigs used in the process ensure production is consistent and guarantees a quality standard. This project has received a UnLtd Award for social entrepreneurship.

A designer since 1997, Fred Rieffel has designed furniture, lights and products for Arfa, Ciav, Cinna, Ligne Roset, Rodet, RocheBobois, Sif, Habitat and Pianca. Between 1999 and 2007, he obtained seven awards labels from VIA, the French organisation promoting innovation in furniture, while his Hello and Minuit designs were entered in the French Contemporary Art National Fund.

Since 2006, he has taught at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg. ‘I like to bring new functions, investigate the new way of using objects, create sustainable objects, even though we’re in the time of disposable things and acceleration.

My work isn’t spectacular but rather in the order of homeopathy,’ he says.

Sebastian Scherer Sebastian Scherer’s X Chair won the Promosedia Chair Competition in 2010, the same year he designed the Aluminium and Loop chairs. Last year he set up his own studio in Berlin, won the Faces of Design Award and completed the Aluminium series with the dining table.

‘My designs are expressions of individuality and functionality at the same time,’ he says.

Hugo Tejada Hugo Tejada founded his studio in Valencia, last year, and collaborates with various lighting and furniture companies including Fambuena, Aribau, Anperbar, Ole by FM, Mantra, Maniluz and ACB Iluminación.

‘The studio is a creative space in which ideas and concepts are created using a variety of resources without forgetting the tradition and the constant contact with the materials,’ he says. ‘Objects are designed with their own identity, each product is looking for the innovation and originality of the concept without losing the function for which it was designed.’

Markus Johansson ‘To me, design is about expressing a feeling that affects people’s lives and improves everyday life,’ says Markus Johansson, whose Verona dining table (right) was produced by Hansk last year. ‘I try to find inspiration from various environments stretching from the human to the artefact, through analysing and processes I search for the correct path. My vision is to construction, function and form to enrich the everyday experience.

Environmental thinking is of course important, but shouldn’t hinder creativity. My goal is to create products with new shapes and lasting values.’

In recent years Haro has moved its laminate offer upmarket to differentiate itself from lower cost rivals and to make the most of its heritage.

Its top of the range Parkettmanufaktur collection is hand produced to the customerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s individual specification, including brushed, scraped, handscraped and worm-hole appearance finishes.

Haroâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Celenio flooring tiles use wood-based material Harolith, a mixture of selected wood fibres and natural resins combined under high temperature and pressure. A large part of the Celenio range replicates stone, slate or linen. This year will see three more designs: Attika with a mosaic-like texture and earthy colours to coordinate with rustic furniture and coarse fabrics; Dunas, with a retro style wave texture; and Papyrsu with a textile texture.

While cork remains a niche market in the UK, Haro has also enjoyed success in other countries with its cork ranges. Among the latest is Tiger, taking tiger skin patterns as its inspiration with black and light brown combining for an exclusive look.

Will 2012 be the year that patterned carpet has its day or will plains continue to rule the roost?

James Caldwell, Crown Floors sales coordinator suggests it is not only pattern that will come to the fore in 2012.

He says with consumers looking to replace and refurbish rather than move, a shift in buying patterns is likely. Those expecting patterned carpets to become popular will not be disappointed as the company will introduce some contemporary interpretations in a geometric pindot and the ubiquitous stripe. But Caldwell says there is also another growth area to consider.

‘Consumers are paying more attention to the finer details of their carpet, rather than opting for just a plain beige twist. In fact, a darkening economy causes something of a nesting instinct, so owners look to their home to provide comfort and warmth – a safe environment away from the troubles if you like – and this is why we are also seeing texture on the up,’ he says.

‘Carpet that offers a deeper pile will see more selection over the next year.

Colours too will reflect the nesting trend, with richer shades of neutrals coming to the fore.’

Ray Snell, Ulster Carpets head of residential design, reckons heavier neutrals on the warm side will continue to dominate the domestic market. Warm greys, purple-grey, blue/green-grey, through to warm brown-grey palettes, which are so dominant in lifestyle, interior and fashion magazines, will continue to become more commercial.

Red, a perennial favourite, taken out of a domestic setting, looks equally good in a contemporary setting along with stronger intense colour palette of gold, olive green and turquoise, he says.

‘Tweed and knitted-like textures in a warm grey colour palette will emerge with a nod towards alternative yarns such as cotton, linen and synthetic silk,’ adds Snell.

Carpets sales director, says that at the premium end of the sector, pattern has never really gone away and that renewed interest at the more competitive end of the industry will reap benefits for stockists.

‘There is absolutely no doubt that we are famous for patterned carpets and that the mere mention of Axminster Carpets compels the mind to conjure up an image of beautiful pattern intensity and reproduction that cannot quite be matched by any other carpet. And with our efforts to position the brand with a more youthful audience, Axminster Carpets now equally stands for contemporary carpet with a twist,’ he states.

‘The premium end of the market has always been more open to pattern, but that is not to say that our network of retailers won’t feel the impact of renewed interest in design that’s shown elsewhere.’

With pattern appearing across the sector and with adoption expected to rise at all price points, consumers will be more in-tune with the variety on offer and there will be more awareness that a

carpet’s design doesn’t have to consist of flowers or stripes, it can be contemporary and individual in equal measure.

‘We see these carpets appealing to a wider audience than before, with pattern proving that it is not just for those with Georgian townhouses and country manors,’ he says.

Birger Karlsson, Lano Carpets UK and Ireland sales manager, says people are delaying house moves and spending money on their homes, not to maximise their sale potential, but to reflect their personality and style.

‘Carpet selection is now thankfully more about individualism than bland universal appeal,’ he says.

Patterned carpet, albeit in subtle geometric or tonal floral qualities, is certainly becoming more popular, according to Karlsson, but he says that does not mean people are willing to pay more for the privilege.

‘The traditional perception that pattern costs more is now being addressed and retailers can benefit from the rising trend,’ he says.

‘There is little doubt that more interest in the detail of carpet and the ambition

to reflect personality and individuality is certainly a trend that will grab popularity in 2012, but it is also important to remember that the demand for value is getting more intense too. Collections that can bring a combination of these attributes are likely to be the rising stars of the year.’

However, David Cormack, Cormar Carpets marketing director, thinks opting for pattern could be an expensive move.

‘Although some say patterned carpet will make a comeback, in a recessionary environment we believe that plains will continue to dominate the market.

‘If the objective is to give a new look to the home without incurring great expense, the option that most people will choose when times are tough is still plain carpet. The reason being that selecting patterned carpet that coordinates with existing fabric on curtains and sofas is difficult without changing the existing decor,’ he adds.

he explains. ‘Tough times call for a clear strategy, and we believe that the best solution for UK retailers is to leave the hard part to us.’

After the retailer places the order, the goods are stored in cages at the UK facility, minimising the risk of damage.

Appointments are made with the consumer and trained fitters deliver to their home and assemble the products.

Any service issues are handled by Welle, with no further cost to the retailer.

‘We have learned a considerable amount over the past two years. We previously operated a DHD service through a partner supplier for one major customer, but it proved difficult to reach the required level of service when relying on a third party that has its own interests at heart,’ says Kutas.

‘We had sufficient volume to start a logistics business here, and the directors at Welle had the foresight to allow us to take the next step. The investment in monetary terms is large, but in terms of commitment and manpower it has been massive.’

He explains that bedroom furniture in particular requires careful handling with assembly so retailers can lose a lot of their profit servicing complaints.

‘There are retailers out there that are experts in handling furniture like ours, but there are many more that are not, and have possibly avoided selling it. We are making it as painless as possible for them.’

Welle is also updating its product offer.

‘The next few years are going to be testing for manufacturers and retailers.

The time is right for us to take out some familiar but dated styles and bring in fresh finishes with a more modern feel,’ adds Kutas.

The result is Highlight, which will be launched at Interiors UK that includes wardrobes, chests and beds in multiple combinations and finished in woodgrain effect with or without contrasting high gloss and mirror fronts.

Country cousins Boosted by the Accent range, Woodside Furniture has produced a rustic collection ‘While the general market has been quite challenging for everyone, we have been encouraged by the ongoing success of our Accent range which seems to strike a chord with a broad spectrum of customers,’ says David Carter, Woodside Furniture director.

‘We have been asked by a number of our customers to produce a rustic dining range along the same lines as the Accent, so based on this feedback we have produced the Rustic Manor range which is based around the same design as Accent but with a darker finish and using a more rustic oak to give a more weathered look and feel.’

Accent was designed with a more compact home in mind as all pieces have soft edges to them and chamfer detail on the

legs and uprights leaving no sharp edges – important in smaller environments where you may brush against the furniture more.

It has a dowel detail and breadboard ends with a burr aspen inlay which sets it aside from more basic light oak offerings.

With three extending dining table options of 90cm, 140cm and 160cm, wood and bicast chair options and occasional pieces, the range offers flexibility.

‘Early signs for the Rustic Manor range are good as retailers are enjoying a healthy repeat rate so we expect that sales for this range will be as successful as Accent. ‘We have always been very aware of shifting living patterns, it’s an incredibly important ingredient to good design,’ says Tasleem Tasab, Serene Furnishings founder and creative director. ‘We need to be ahead of the curve, identifying trends and lifestyle patterns before they emerge.’

At last year’s Interiors show Serene debuted the Leather Bed collection, produced in partnership with UK designer Colin Jackson, of five unique models, each presenting aspects more commonly seen in sofa design.

This year the emphasis is on fabric with a range of bedsteads, ottomans, headboards and sofabeds.

‘We feel that fabric is set to be very big and we have produced a design-led collection using stylish fabrics in neutral colour selections, which will work with virtually any room. This is very important as we realise that consumers may well be wishing to inject certain elements of the new Upholstered Collection into existing room themes, so the neutrality of the range makes that achievable, with ease,’ says Tasab.

He says the flexibility in introducing new pieces to the home is one of the key strengths of the collection and a plus for retailers.

‘There is quite an eclectic feel out there when it comes to stylising your living space, so our fabric and colour choice with this new collection plays to that trend. We have also created four different finish colours to the legs on the bedsteads – natural, mahogany, walnut and ebony – so that consumers are able to blend their purchase with existing furniture, in a way you’d expect with more bespoke purchases,’ he says.

The range will launch with four bedstead designs – Charlotte, Chelsea, Anastasia and Hazel – in a choice of three colours, with more designs planned for launch in the coming year.

Each of the bedsteads is available in sizes ranging from 4ft to 6ft and features a sprung slatted base.

Tasab says the company is committed to providing retailers with something fresh, increasing their chances of making a sale and attracting new customers.

‘We therefore take time, working on the development of designs and material combinations that will appeal to lifestyle demands and the changing tastes of the consumer. The Upholstered Collection has enjoyed many a twist and turn before arriving at the finished article, which we are incredibly happy with,’ he says.

Its neutral colours, fabric and range of leg finishes allows it to blend with not just the bedroom theme, but the wider styling of the home – a key concern for those contending with the issues surrounding small space living.

Ahead of the launch, Serene spent the latter part of 2011 bolstering its warehousing facility and logistics operation. It increased its warehouse space by 21,000sqft to more than 100,000sqft with the addition of a unit at its West Bromwich premises, where it now holds over 60,000 items of stock.

‘As we set about launching collections, adding them to our well-performing ranges, it is vital that we invest in more space and improved logistics. We are committed to ensuring quick delivery times, offering a depth of stock that supports our retailers and assisting them in clinching a sale wherever possible,’ explains Tasab.

Rimini is an entry level range in a black carcase, with black glass doors. Atlanta is a budget slider offered in 150cm or 200cm widths in walnut and golden maple with mirrored doors. Donna is a semi-traditional design in a new rough cut oak finish. Astoria in beech, is more traditional in style and features locks and keys to doors. London has been reinvented as an entry-level range.

Winsor will expand its oak Stockholm living room and dining collection into the bedroom, with a natural blond finish, softclose doors and drawers, and dovetailed joints.

‘Following the trend of high gloss grey in kitchens and ladies’ fashions moving to shades of grey, we researched the market and found, in conjunction with our supplier, a beautiful smoky oak foil. The Bordeaux bedroom range was only launched last

year and is now our fastest growing range,’ he says.

It has a smoky oak finish with strong mitred design features, combined with smoked glass tops and chunky brushed nickel handles and metal drawer runners for an easy glide action.

The Toledo range, he says, shows that older ranges can be given new life.

‘An all-time classic is brought up to date with the Toledo range of bedroom furniture. With a warm oak finish, bevelled mirrors, bull-nosed doors and metal pewter ring handles, this elegantly designed furniture will look good in any bedroom.

And like all good classics it will keep looking good for years to come,’ he says.

The company produces around 7,500 bedroom and lounge cabinets every week, which are distributed by its own transport fleet to homes and warehouses around the British Isles.

‘G Plan returns to the NEC with the launch of an elegant and classically designed new teak living and dining range. Also being released at the Birmingham exhibition is the vintage French chic painted bedroom range Picasso, with a stunning slightly-distressed finish,’ says George McGraw, Morris Furniture Group joint md.

Relaxateeze continues to cater for all needs with more products and options, he says. There are additions to the Buonissimo fabric collection, including the Mohito colour fabric, the Grigio swivel chair and the Campari chair and three-seater.

Morris will also use the setting of Interiors UK to introduce its delicately fashioned white painted bedroom range, Boutique, while the living and dining range, Storm, will also be launched in ash with an oak finish.

Offering compact, practical dining ranges in many different styles covering a variety of price points has been G&P’s speciality since its inception in 1998 and Neil Godfrey, G&P director says this will continue.

‘Many dining options available today do not meet the growing need for space-efficient, practical sizes necessary for the modern home. By offering tables in these sizes but also with functional extending options, including draw-leafs, fliptops and drop-leaves, we not only meet this demand but offer more by ensuring the best use is made of the space available,’ he says.

James Uren, Luso Lounger This modern reinterpretation of the chaise longue ’evolved from looking at redundant furniture and reinventing it to suit the way in which we live today,’ says Uren. ‘The addition of a footstool means there are a number of different ways in which it can be used: a day bed, lounger, chair, footstool. The Luso Lounger is an interesting asymmetric form that is versatile and makes excellent use of space. The under-frame has been constructed using American cherry and the shell of the lounger is made from lacquered plywood.’

Liam Treanor, Savoye ‘The Savoye chair is functional and comfortable, as well as visually pleasing and robust,’ says Treanor. ‘For several years I have been critical of designs both old and new and wanted to bring something to the market that is commercially viable with a fresh aesthetic. I am a fan of Scandinavian design, with clean lines, pale timbers and

Gregg Parsell, Revival ‘Revival is a domestic upholstered sofa, reminiscent of 1960s furniture design,’ says Parsell. ‘A fully considered form that is designed to enhance any environment when freestanding or positioned against a wall. It is a high-end product constructed from American white oak, Glacier White Corian and upholstered in leather with contrasting top-stitching.

‘It is a collection of interior pieces based around the British great outdoors and rediscovering the excitement of spotting an animal within the local environment,’ she says. ‘Capturing the sense of animals creeping and hiding around us. This concept stemmed from the social issues connected with children’s increased use of technology and in turn the decreasing amounts of time children spend playing outside, learning and connecting with their local environments.’

Laura Daley, The River Thames at Night ‘This hand-woven art installation piece tells the story of the stunning city lights alongside the River Thames in London from Tower Bridge to The Houses of Parliament,’ says Daley. ‘It has been designed to look like a landscape painting mirroring both the buildings and their casting reflections. My inspiration came from taking night time photographs and then piecing them together to make a panoramic landscape of the Thames.

‘The piece has been hand-woven using spun silk dyed by hand to accurately match the colours to the photographs.

The bottom of each colour has then been dip-dyed in black to give the impression that they are fading into the darkness, creating a sense of movement similar to the rippling reflections in the water.’

‘Conceptually Bricks acknowledges the current trend of up-cycling. It does this by using the brick wall of a Yorkshire Victorian terraced house and a section of 1940s fabric doily and transforms them into interesting motifs within an exciting contemporary textile pattern. The colour palette is inspired by sandstone and red brick mills, soot and white linen as well as colour trend forecasts.’

Colleen Ellington, Blue Kudo ‘My style and way of working is unique, embracing new computer aided cutting equipment and materials, using CAD in the initial stages, adapting and reworking by hand on to fabrics, creating bespoke one-off interior furnishing fabrics,’ says Ellington. ’My current collection grew from sketches and a travel journal recorded during a trip home to South Africa, the game farm in the Kalahari and Cape Town.

‘My aim is to combine African and European influences, to play with imagery like South African buck styled in a contemporary way with a colour palette that breaks with tradition. I am extending my skills and technology to print my design and upholster my first chair.’

Penny Seume, New York Seume used the urban landscape as inspiration for atmosphere, texture and colour. ‘I combine the traditional fine art techniques of painting and collage with contemporary digital print, to create bespoke and limited edition fabrics. All designs are created, printed and made in the UK using natural fabrics, linen and velvet. The New York collection of furnishing fabric, cushions, lamps and wallpaper, was created in response to the grids, shapes and textures within the iconic skyline and architecture of the city.

In addition, the imagery and colours pay tribute to the work of Edward Hopper and Van Gogh.’

Yuri Meneghelli’s Leather Pix Inspired from the mosaic making work of craft, Leather Pix combines traditional materials and processes with modern technology and style. ‘The result is a fresh new wallcovering product that brings warmth and elegance to interiors,’ says Meneghelli. ‘Apart from its purely aesthetic aspects, the concept expresses strong respect for materials: FSC certified plywood is used for this practically zero waste production (only wood shaving from CNC cuts are lost in the process) which recovers leather offcuts for the composition of graphics. Graphics and finish can be customised.’

Rachel Hagger, A Room With A View ‘I designed a collection of commercial but contemporary wallpapers based on my own brief – A Room With A View,’ says Hagger.

‘The idea behind this theme was about structures within landscapes so looking at architecture through buildings, pylons, and scaffolding. My initial drawings and photos came from Newcastle, Durham, London, Liverpool and my home town of Darlington.

All my wallpapers are hand screen printed using my linear, almost abstract, initial drawings which I think gives an organic look to the prints that you can’t get with digital printing.’

Wendy Braithwaite, Kookaburra ‘There is something enthralling in the mastery of the still lifes of the 17th century – tables are piled high with all manner of fruit, flowers and opulent tableware,’ says Braithwaite.

‘Their subtext is also intriguing: while the paintings served as symbols of power and prosperity of the emerging middle classes at this time, they also contain elements to remind the viewer of the transience of life.

‘It was these elements that provided a visual inspiration for my wallpaper, Kookaburra. For my designs, I create large-scale oil paintings and in this work I have recast imagery from the painting, Bouquet in a Glass Vase, by Dutch artist,

‘As an Australian working in London, I am attracted to the idea of introducing a foreign element to what appears to be a very European setting. I envisage the design as a non-repeating wallpaper – a trompe-l’œil appearing in a study or nook of a room.’

Sophie Adamson, Design ‘With my work I strive to incorporate a traditional craft with a contemporary edge,’ says Adamson. ‘My entry is from my final year’s project at university. My inspiration for the project began with the simple concept of birds: the shape of their feathers, wings and colours.

‘Alongside this I wanted to explore a diverse range of yarn textures and thicknesses, incorporating hand and machine knitting to create a range of designs and stitches. I also hand-dyed the majority of my yarns to gain the exact colour combinations desired. My aim was to create products that showed off the knitting and were all about the craft.’

‘The ceiling-hung frame and mechanism of the lamp, made from aluminium, acts as an electrical conductor for the low voltage LED bulb, enabling the lamp to maintain its clean lines uninterrupted by electrical wiring.

The sand filled counterweight doubles as a handle for adjustment of the lamp’s height.’

‘The Bow lamp uses the wonderful properties of wood to allow a curved component to be produced from straight fully seasoned timber. The lighting flex is hidden within the lamp upright. The lamps can be made from ash, oak or walnut and comes with a globe energy saving bulb.’

Lucy Porter, Running Squirrel and Eagle Owl Porter says the wall hooks/decorative wall art, along with her multifunctional furniture, ‘create an innovative setting for laminate and hand embroidery, eradicating its mundane stereotypes within the fun, illustrative and colourful product. Bringing embroidery into a functional and contemporary environment while showing the crisp beauty and versatility of laminate.’

Haro is celebrating 25 years of laminate

Quick-Step wants calming floors

Concentrating on local tastes, new finishes for oak and easier fitting are all on the cards for wood and laminate flooring this year.

Balterio says ease of installation will be important as it introduces the PXP (PressXpress) fold-down fitting system for the short sides of planks to its new Infinity and Experience collections.

Years of research and development combined with the daily experiences and wishes of customers resulted in PXP, says Franky Terrijn, Balterio marketing director. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;The clip inside the plank ensures an immediate locking of the short sides resulting in a seamless and strong joint. Now all you have to do is press the flooring boards into place end to end,â&#x20AC;&#x2122; he says.

Terrijn says PXP has advantages compared to other fold down systems: one single locking action of two panels both horizontally and vertically; ease of installation as the folding angle for installation is not important; and no friction force during installation.

Balterio has developed production equipment for inserting the clip into the flooring panels capable of handling more than 200m per minute.

The company is due to introduce several oak shades this year, increasing the number to 30, including two created by heat treatment rather than ammoniac.

‘Heat treating gives the oak a brown warm tone similar to the smoking technique but based on heat instead of ammoniac. We have opted for the heat treating technique as this has no negative impact on the environment and our employees. We also avoid the increased VOCs in the finished product by avoiding the usage of ammoniac,’ says the company.

At Domotex the company is also set to show its latest concept research, including staining the floors. It says using this technique means the oaks are stained through the thickness assuring consistency of colour and a higher scratch resistance.

The floors will be shown in a high gloss finish, a heavily brushed finish and a scratched finish. The scratched finish is a rough cut technique on veneers. It is also showing a fine line birch floor in different colours and gloss levels.

For Quick-Step, 2012 will be a year of reclaiming old

values, with its designs reflecting this. It says many people believe globalisation has led to an ecological, social, democratic and cultural deficit, but reckons a counter-movement is becoming more prominent.

‘No more globalisation. Let’s appreciate every country’s individual personality,’ says the company.

‘We want more local products and we are proud of our typical styles and local preferences. Up until last year, Quick-Step offered the same floors to all its customers worldwide. Now we have changed tack, splitting up our collections to suit a specific country or a specific group of countries,’ says the company.

It says it is on a quest for greater authenticity. Vintage is all the rage again, and not just in terms of the way we dress. The reclaimed look is gradually becoming visible in all segments of the interior industry, including the new Quick-Step floors.

‘We are continually under pressure in our performance-driven society. Which makes it all the more important to us to strike the right balance between body and soul. We want to stop and reflect on what is pure, what is essential in life. What matters is just being happy: peace and quiet, wellness, zen, nature... Quick-Step’s answer is the introduction of cosy floors with a soft and peaceful look and feel that will help you to relax completely,’ it says.

Each season used to have a specific fashion colour. Now all colours are fashionable, from brown and black across denim and grey, all the way up to pastels. Today, the art of being fashionable is in the way we combine colours, shapes and materials: new with vintage, black with pastel shades, rough and smooth. The company says this means its reclaimed floors are suited to country homes, industrial and contemporary interior designs alike.

For Haro, 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of its laminate with five new Gran Via styles and more oak designs, including the rustic Alabama Oak with grading and manually trowelled out cracks.

At a time when many people are lamenting the state of British manufacturing, one company is showing how manufacturing in the country can become a success story.

Founded five years ago, Ezifloor has been operating from its 150,000sqft factory in Keighley, West Yorkshire for three-and-a-half years and there is a sense of business confidence about the place.

‘It’s been a good year, both in sales growth and the introduction of new products that have gone well with the market,’ says Ian Craig, Ezifloor sales director.

And the company has not been afraid to invest for the future. Solar panels have been installed on the factory’s roof to reduce its energy bills (wind turbines are being considered), an air drying system has been installed to speed up the manufacturing process of its PU underlay, the factory roof is being insulated to reduce condensation and cut heat loss by up to 80%, and a £250,000 bulk chemical

Ezifloor’s underlay is mainly sold through distributors and wholesalers and the company is also a major own label manufacturer. ‘Many retailers will have sold our products without knowing it was ours,’ he says.

cast its net wider, recruiting four agents as it targets larger independent retailers who can buy in sufficient quantities to buy direct.

Craig says the underlay market has changed in recent years with PU underlays overtaking the once dominant rubber underlays.

‘PU sales have increased because it’s much lighter than rubber underlays and whereas PU used to be more expensive than rubber, an

equivalent product is now cheaper,’ he says.

‘The funny thing is that people also want their underlay to look nice, despite the fact they’ll never see it until they replace their carpet. So we’ve done that. Look at Superstep Luxury for example, which has a white top with gold lettering. Because it looks nice in the shop, consumers are more willing to consider PU.’

Making a brand on comfort

‘Consumers are becoming more discerning due to the economy, which is good as they are looking to brands they trust – but it does mean that they are taking longer in their decision making,’ says Clive Parry, Ekornes national sales manager.

‘2012 will be a challenging year, however I foresee that we can continue to take market share, raise brand awareness and further establish our relationships with our retail partners.’

Parry made his comments as he showed off the company’s 2012 Stressless products at the National Motorcycle Museum in Birmingham last month.

The Voyager recliner has an oval shape that brings a new look to the sector. ‘The Ekornes design team was stimulated by a new challenge: to create a chair with a design very different to

anything that can be found on the market today,’ says Arve Ekornes, Ekornes director of product design. ‘At the same time it would be essential to take the comfort a step further from 2011’s Magic model.

‘It is first and foremost the chair’s oval shape that makes it stand out and this makes for a visually neat and compact style, while the soft cushions with waffled foam offer a new level of comfort, which simply has to be experienced.’

Legend extends the Magic range into sofas and corner units.

‘The feedback on Magic’s unique padding was very good so we have launched a sofa with the same comfort. Legend is ideal for corner units and home cinema,’ says Ekornes.

The showwood Wizard offers a more Scandinavian style with a choice of seven finishes, four leather and five soft cover options, alongside a low or high back with adjustable headrest.

In response to requests from UK retailers, the E200 and E300 now have a one seat option and the choice of a side panel rather than an arm, making them more suitable for smaller rooms.

The Magic recliner has also been extended with the introduction of a small model that will be available in early summer.

There is also the Duo table that can store four Duo stools under the table-top when they are not in use.

Hard to miss at the show was the company’s signature colour for 2012 – a bold cerise – which will feature in its consumer advertising campaigns this year.

As well as the launches the company showed off new accessory ideas for in-store displays.

‘We are revisiting studios emphasising accessories and decoration and providing information on where partners can source them from. It is the finishing touch in making sure the Stressless studios look inspirational for consumers,’ says Anna-Marie Warren, Ekornes communications manager.

‘Good use of accessories can make a real difference, particularly on the more traditional designs.’

Fibre seats have had a bad reputation over the years because they often went flat and lumpy, but those days should be over after Fibreline set itself what Richard Prudhoe, md, describes as ‘the goal of producing the holy grail of seating cushions’ and developed Encore Gold.

Historically fibre cushions were sometimes made from inferior materials and customers found it difficult to properly maintain heavy cushions. This has resulted in customer complaints and costs for retailers and manufacturers.

Recently furniture manufacturers have recognised the importance of a roll carded construction using a high quality polyester fibre in the manufacture of a fibre seat. But, even these fibre seats require good maintenance by the end user, says Prudhoe. And if the end user fails to regularly plump and turn the cushions these too will end up going flat.

The issue means that while the cushion may be manufactured in the right manner and from quality materials there is still a reliance on the customer and therefore no guarantee the retailer will not get a complaint.

‘We wanted to produce a seat cushion that had the look, feel and sit of a fibre seat but with the recovery and performance of a foam cushion – and wanted to guarantee the performance,’ he says.

This has led to the development of Encore Gold which has the look and feel of fibre with the recovery and durability of foam, according to Prudhoe.

‘Encore Gold has been awarded the FIRA Gold seal of approval and in FIRA tests it outperformed all other fibre cushions,’ he says.

Plump up the volume Established in 1982, Fibreline was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for use in the UK upholstery market. Over the years Fibreline has grown to be a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather and foam cushions.

‘As a manufacturer of all three fillings it has been at the leading edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm. Fibreline intends to continue to be innovators in this market using its skills and the latest technology to stay at the forefront of cushion design,’ says Prudhoe.

‘The secret behind Encore Gold is its unique foam/fibre construction. Using only carded fibre with the latest spiral crimp technology, the cushions are filled by hand to ensure there are no voids. The cushions are then wrapped in such a way as to enhance the overall look and feel.’

An added advantage of being lighter than a similar sized fibre cushion is that it is easier to pick up and plump.

‘In fact, altogether less frequent

plumping is required as the simple action of regularly turning the cushion is enough to maintain its performance,’ he says.

Prudhoe says it is because of the firm’s expertise that the product has a four year guarantee against flattening.

‘Encore Gold has been designed to give years of trouble free use and to take customer satisfaction to a new level,’ he adds.

‘The UK market, in comparison to other markets, is still very traditional and conservative and so the two collections fit in well with the wishes of the UK market,’ adds Sommermeyer.

FINAL POLISH Betteridge awards It was an awards double for Peter Betteridge Furnishers in the first Western Morning News Business Awards.

Founder Peter Betteridge won the Lifetime Achievement award while the company – which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year – scooped the Customer Service award.

National treasures Duresta is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its partnership with the National Trust which enables the company to study original pieces of furniture from the charity’s collections and produce designs inspired by these for its global customer base.

Over the past two decades Duresta has produced 15 pieces under the National Trust brand, contributing ‘sizeable’ revenue to further the charity’s conservation work.

‘The National Trust label has grown in demand over the past 20 years and it is particularly popular with our international customers. Staff at the Northfield, Birmingham branch of United Carpets helped charity workers come up with a novel way to bring Christmas cheer to children on the other side of the world – recycling.

They saved the protective polythene wrappers from carpet rolls and gave them to local helpers for charity Samaritan’s Purse. The helpers then turned them into the backing for homemade games of draughts and snakes and ladders.

‘The games have gone into shoeboxes full of gifts which the charity collects all over the country to send to needy children overseas who otherwise wouldn’t get a Christmas present,’ says franchisee Andy McLeod.
