Gaskell Wool Rich will unveil Abbey Road and update its Kennington range with new colours.

Making its Harrogate debut is Introducing Interiors. Launched in May, it brings products from North America and Italy. From Bois in Canada it has a range of distinctive hardwood flooring, complemented by a complete line of other naturally sourced products including eco-friendly energy logs. The company is also distributing eco-friendly adhesives, premium underlay and installation products that offer sound and moisture control from US company DriTac. Italian rug producer La Passatoia Milleusi’s rugs are also on offer. j2 Flooring will be introducing tile designs in four contemporary, large format styles and launching its Own Label concept, giving retailers exclusive LVT options.

Manx Tomkinson will highlight two new wool ranges: Cadiz and Craven Twist, along with four additions to the Easy Living PP family – Antigua, Bahamas, Cuba and St Lucia.

Unifloor Underlay Systems will demonstrate its Jumpax dual underlay system. Each of the six systems is designed to complement a specific type of floor finish or base floor situation. The two self-adhesive components are quickly and easily fitted as a free-floating subfloor, smoothing over typical irregularities and eliminating the need for screeds, primers, ply boards and nails. It is not necessary to remove old floor coverings, loose screeds or even surface contamination.

Karndean Designflooring is set to unveil four wood designs to accommodate the growing trend for room to room floor designs as part of its updated Art Select Woods collection.

Tapping into the constantly evolving trend for adding grey in the home, the multi-tonal grey hues of Storm Oak will be introduced to its premium Art Select collection in a matching full-length plank (1,219mm x 178mm), parquet (228mm x 76mm) and basket-weave (305mm x 76mm, 114mm x 114mm) format.

With an existing Spring Oak full length plank and parquet design already available, the collection will also welcome a new Spring Oak basket-weave design.

‘These new designs are ideal for homeowners looking to achieve the same colour floor room to room with an alternative format or as a standalone rug effect to break up individual spaces. With traditional dark and rich brown tones already available as part of our Art Select Oak Royale collection, our new cool grey tone will be extremely popular with homeowners looking for a more contemporary feel,’ explains Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring UK retail sales director.

‘Having the same design in three different formats will allow our independent retail network to impress homeowners with a new option for achieving a consistent feel throughout the home. We’re expecting room to room floor designs to become an even more popular trend going forward.

‘Likewise, we know traditional basket-weave effects are back in style and homeowners are often looking to pair them with parquet or full length designs. Our newest basket-weave designs are perfect for a statement hallway or highlighting key areas such as a dining space.’

Visitors will also get the opportunity to see Karndean’s rigid core collection, Korlok, with 12 authentic wood designs (1,420mm x 225mm) inspired by European and North American woods.

Korlok can be installed over most existing hard surface floors or uneven subfloors without the worry of exposing any imperfections underfoot, thanks to its innovative K-Core technology. It features a 5G vertical click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing for quick and easy installation.

It can also reduce noise transfer to rooms below up to 19dB, without the need for separate underlay, making it ideal for a busy playroom, home office, bedroom or loft conversion.

‘Unlike other rigid core products and click laminate flooring, Korlok can be scored and snapped for ease of installation like our established Gluedown and LooseLay ranges,’ he explains.

True master EIR and digital printing is helping Balterio achieve its ‘natural’ look It has always been Balterio’s aim to develop laminate floors that look and feel like real parquet.

‘Over the years, Balterio has become a true master in reproducing nature in all its aspects. One of the main techniques to reproduce that natural look is the embossed-inregister process in which the top structure matches the wood design perfectly. The new oaks in Tradition Quattro are best in class in EIR: they offer a deep and matt EIR surface structure in combination with a four-sided V-groove,’ says Franky Terrijn, Balterio marketing manager.

Another technology Balterio has invested in recently is digital printing. ‘Laminate has never been so realistic: it is virtually impossible to distinguish digital printed laminate from authentic parquet, while the surface structure feels as genuine.

All of this year’s collections are based around what the customers have been asking for: a mix of textures, materials, colours and patterns all chosen and designed based on current market trends.

Everything on display has been designed around the independent retailer where the collections can be supplied by the roll or as cut lengths, eliminating warehousing and carrying large levels of stock.

To exclusively benefit visitors to the stand, a series of offers will be available including reduced cut length prices for retailers looking for hassle-free carpet sales.

For larger retailers interested in roll sales the company is offering free full rolls with every order of three rolls from its collections at the show.

This year has seen the company reach 1,000 retailers.

To encourage new retailers, TCS is also offering a free POS floor display with orders of four rolls or more.

Growth and development Ulster Carpets is investing in the future Next year will mark 80 years of manufacturing for Ulster Carpets, which is showing no signs of slowing down.

Dedicated to producing the finest Axminster and Wilton carpets, its focus on innovation and investment has resulted in it expanding its operations in recent years despite a decline in the UK carpet manufacturing industry.

While tough trading and financial periods have seen many competitors move operations abroad, Ulster’s long term strategy and proactive business approach has enabled it to ensure manufacturing and all operations remain at home. In the past few months alone it has created 20 jobs, providing a welcome boost to the local economy.

Finalists in the NICF Carpet Fitter of the Year competition face their final tasks on 17-18 September in the King’s Suite

Mark Smurthwaite received the 2016 award from Anthea Turner and judge Ian James

Darren Ash, Alfrick, Worcestershire ‘I have been fitting carpets and flooring and running my own successful business for over 30 years. I started my flooring career straight from school having spent many a school holiday helping out and learning the basics. My father was my mentor and instilled in me the importance of always doing the best job possible and leaving the customer satisfied: wise words which certainly made an impression on me. I joined the NICF in 2014 and successfully took the Master Fitter exams. I soon realised the benefits the additional NICF qualifications brought in setting myself apart from all the other carpet fitters around.

I currently hold the Master Fitter qualification in both carpet and domestic vinyl as well an NVQ in carpet fitting. I am very proud to be a finalist for the second consecutive year as I feel there is some unfinished business.’

Jason Draper, Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire ‘I’ve been in the flooring trade since my first job in a shop aged 15. I was in charge of making tea, tidying the shop and general warehousing duties. I started helping carpet fitters soon after and this is where I discovered an interest in the job. From there I joined a team full-time in 2001 and soon after was on my own fitting carpets in local domestic and commercial properties.

I joined the NICF two years ago and am a Master Fitter in LVT and laminate. I attend regular courses to keep up to date with new ideas and developments to provide my customers with the best value and the best finish to their jobs. It’s a great achievement to be in the final and I hope that we can all contribute to raising the profile of the trade.’

Byron Terrett, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan ‘My career in floor laying spans over 29 years. My parents owned an interior design business and before leaving school I had made the decision that I would pursue a career in floorcoverings. I have gone on to achieve my NICF Master Fitter qualifications (carpet and laminate), Quick-Step Master Fitter (laminate, hardwood and vinyl categories), Karndean approved installer and obtained a NVQ level 2 in textile and resilient floorcoverings. I take great pride in what I do and have begun to focus on transferring those skills to others. As the main fitter within the family-run business I have begun upskilling our fitting teams. I was fortunate to make and take part in the Carpet Fitter of the Year 2016, which was a huge opportunity and great privilege.’

Dan Evans, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire ‘I have been part of the flooring trade since the age of 14.

I started out working alongside family members and soon realised that this was what I wanted to pursue as my career.

I now run my own successful business where I fit all different kinds of floorcoverings, especially enjoying the challenge of bespoke designs. I attended my first FITA course in 2008 where I then got a taste for further training. It opened my mind to new and different ways of doing the job in the best way possible.

Since then I have undertaken numerous courses and have achieved Master Fitter in carpet, LVT and laminate. Flooring is
