EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Hidden gems Often it is the not so obvious details that make the more revealing and interesting facts on company performance ScS’s latest financial results (see p6) were full of interesting nuggets. It confirmed many people’s anecdotal evidence that February wasn’t a fantastic month for interiors retailers, with shoppers less enamoured to pay their local retail park a visit. Footfall fell by the fastest rate since November 2013, according to the British Retail ConsortiumSpringboard Footfall Monitor. The results also showed how valuable add-on sales can be for retailers. ScS sold £9.88m worth of warranties, equivalent to 5.95% of sales. Also on the increase was its sales density: up an impressive 15.4% thanks to improved sales of branded upholstery, a near 15% rise in flooring sales to £20.1m, and higher average flooring sales values. Headlam’s full year results also contained a

few gems (‘non-recurring costs relating to personnel changes of £1.9m’ for one). In the UK, the company's average order value for residential carpet and residential vinyl in 2016 were £127.44 and £68.03 respectively. That’s an awful lot of orders to reach about £400m of residential sales. Another interesting detail was that after increasing the price of imported products by 6% in August with no impact on demand, a further 3% rise in January equally failed to dent business. As I have said before, it begs the question of whether retailers have been selling products for less than they could. The company also announced the promotion of Tony Judge to Headlam chief operating officer: a job he was surely born to do if ever there was one. Many family-owned companies would look to hang on to cash at times of economic uncertainty, so congratulations to Harrison Spinks for its £9m investment in innovation and equipment (see p6) as it looks to entirely natural beds. It’s voting time for the Interiors Monthly Awards 2017 (see p28-29). As ever, it is your opinions that will decide who the winners will be.

ScS sales spring up in March Upholstery and flooring chain ScS saw a recovery in business in March after a ‘challenging’ February. The 100-store chain said like for like orders were 0.9% higher in the 33 weeks to 18 March, compared with a 2.7% rise in the six months to 28 January. ‘This is a pleasing performance against very strong prior year comparatives, and represents a two years like for like order intake growth of 12.5%. Trading in February was challenging, largely driven by reduced footfall. However, we have seen an improvement since the start of March,’ says David Knight, ScS ceo. Gross sales rose by 14.1% to £165.8m in the six months. In-store upholstery sales were up by 12.8% to £127.6m; flooring sales increased 14.9% to £20.1m; online sales rose by 25% to £5.4m; House of Fraser sales were 22.9% higher to £12.8m and warranty sales rose by 5.6% to £9.88m. It said sales densities increased by 15.4% to £232 per square foot, helped by increasing sales of branded upholstery and larger flooring orders.

C&F sell-off cost £35m A quick disposal of flooring distributor Carpet & Flooring cost former parent SIG £35.2m. The building products group completed the sale of C&F to private equity investor Endless at the end of February, just two months after deciding it didn’t fit its overall group strategy. C&F, and Drywall Qatar, which SIG is also selling, had losses of £5.8m, up from £1.2m in 2016 from sales of £105.4m, up from £103.3m. Aidan Robson, Endless partner says C&F has ‘great potential’ and it has earmarked ‘significant further investment’.

Kindred spirit: Fitted bedroom brand Kindred Living has secured its 50th display stockist, four months after it was launched, at Inline Kitchens and Bedrooms, Pontefract. Inline is a long-standing customer of PWS, Kindred Living’s sister company, and has been selling Second Nature, PWS’s kitchen brand since Inline opened in 2003. Pictured from left are: Ian Winterburn, Inline md; Beverley Winterburn, Inline director; Ryan Winterburn, Inline designer; and Kathryn Bassett, Kindred category brand manager.

Posh joins Anbo fold Online flooring retailer Posh Flooring has become part of wood and laminate flooring supplier Anbo, as the Chinese company looks to boost its retail operations. Posh, which has a showroom in Leeds and five depots in London, Leeds, Southampton, Coventry and Cardiff, has sales of £5m. Anbo already operates 18 Flooring Republic branches across England and Wales and is expanding the chain. The combined company plans to become the largest wood and laminate flooring retailer in the UK within two years. ‘I am extremely excited to be working alongside Bobby [Zhou, Anbo chief executive] and his team. Having both worked extremely hard from the beginning and followed each other’s progression from day one, it’s great that we can now work together with the aim of becoming the UK’s largest wood and laminate retailer,’ says Dominic Nowell-Barnes, who set up Posh Flooring in 2011. The company says the move will also support the expansion of Posh Flooring into Dubai and the UAE.

Harrison Spinks beds to get £9m boost Harrison Spinks is to invest £9m in its bed making operations but end in-house upholstery manufacturing. The investment over the next five years aims to position Harrison Spinks as a world leader in sustainable mattress and comfort innovation. It follows 40% growth over the past two years. The investment includes a new site at its Leeds factory to house a larger innovation and technology centre, more office space and a Somnus showroom.

As well as quadrupling capacity at its natural fillings plant, it is investing in machinery, wire drawing and spring technology. Concentrating on beds and components, it will no longer manufacture Spink & Edgar Upholstery at its Leeds factory, so is seeking another manufacturer to do so. It makes foam-free mattresses and is on the way to developing a glue-free, chemical-free bed.

‘We have been working for some time on new technologies to develop the ultimate natural bed. We want to not only use natural, locally sourced materials, but also remove chemicals and glue from our products,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md. ‘A mattress that is foam-free, glue-free and chemical treatment free is just around the corner and will revolutionise the bed industry as we know it today,’ he adds.

Headlam growth pattern continues into 2017 Flooring distributor Headlam has seen UK like for like sales growth at the start of 2107. Sales were 0.23% and 2.1% higher in January and February, compared with growth of 9.18% and 3.33% in 2016. After passing on an average price rise of 6% on continental European manufactured products last August after the EU Referendum without impacting on sales, a 3% increase was introduced in January with no detrimental effect on trading. UK like for like sales for the group increased by 4.7% last year, with a 5.1% rise in the second half, compared with a 3.4% rise in the first half. Residential like for like sales, 70.1% of UK sales, strengthened as the year went on, with a 5.8%

second half rise after a first half increase of 3.4%, giving a full year rise of 5.3%, up from 3.9% in 2015. Like for like contract sales were up 1.9%. Total UK sales grew to £602.1m. UK underlying operating profit went from £37.36m to £40.94m. Headlam is considering an alternative site for Ipswich operation Faithfulls, on a purpose-built distribution park that offers a quicker build and operational timeline, and a third more cubic capacity in the same footprint as the initial proposed site. At £17m it is £2m more than the first site but could open in the first half of 2018. Since the year end Mitchell Carpets in Poole was added to the group, bringing the number of subsidiaries to 60.

Hypnos seeks apprentices

Vogue has added to its delivery fleet

Investment plan for Vogue Vogue Beds has begun a scheme that will see £1.2m invested in the bed manufacturer over the next five years. The Barwell, Leicestershire company has purchased two Iveco vehicles to add to its current fleet, which will provide an increase in delivery capacity and improved services. A new Bordtac series 2 border machine has been purchased exclusively for use on its Hampton collection. The new side stitch machine can create 10 tier stitched borders, and was purchased alongside a new tape edging machine with a larger table for bespoke size mattresses. ‘These are exciting times at Vogue Beds. This initial investment of £200,000 is just the start of an exciting investment programme in our pursuance of continual improvement,’ says Ebrahim Patel, Vogue Beds md.

Bed manufacturer Hypnos plans to create 150 jobs over the next five years and will look to apprenticeships to fill 40% of them. It has been running an apprenticeship scheme for the past six years. The company will visit secondary schools within a 10-mile radius of its Princes Risborough and Castle Donington sites to inform youngsters about the job opportunities available in the manufacturing industry. ‘We are committed to supporting the manufacturing industry by providing

young, talented people with apprenticeships and jobs that will help them to prepare for specialist roles. Our intention is to bring in a minimum of 12 young people per year into the company on an apprenticeship basis,’ says Stephen Ward, Hypnos group md. ‘Sadly, working in manufacturing doesn’t have the appeal it once had and our aim is to engage with young people and change that opinion, ensuring that well-trained, dedicated professionals continue to enter this diverse and exciting industry,’ he adds.

Bob Tasker Bob Tasker, former chairman of furniture and flooring retailer Taskers, died on 12 March. He was 92. The family business in Accrington was founded by his grandfather in 1896, and Tasker joined as a teenager before serving in the Second World War. He became head of the company after his father, also called Robert, died in 1953. By then the firm was well established in the furniture and carpet trade. He decided to move the company to its present Queens Mill site in 1965 and later to abandon the wholesale side of the business and concentrate on retail.

As a result the freehold was purchased and the building fully converted to a showroom: today it covers 30,000sqft. He retired in 1984, being succeeded by his son Robert Philip, Taskers current chairman. ‘I joined the business in 2001 and Bob was certainly fully engaged in bringing the business up to date with the latest ranges and technology and constantly looking forward. He was certainly a character that will be very much missed by us all,’ says Ivor Lefton, Taskers md. He is survived by his wife Hazel, two children and three grandchildren.

John Lewis and Waitrose staff will receive a 6% annual bonus, as the group shores up its balance sheet. The group’s bonus has been reduced for the previous four years: last year it was 10%. Although headline profits jumped by almost two-thirds to £488.2m, operating profits dropped after allowing for exceptional items such as pension costs and property sales. The group said average non-management pay rates increased by 5% last year, at a cost of £36m. Had it just matched the National Living Wage, costs would have been only £3m higher. ‘In the year ahead, trading pressures will continue as a result of the wider changes taking place in retail. The two major influences are pricing, where the rate of change in selling prices is likely to be significantly slower than the rate of change in costs as a result of weakness in the sterling exchange rate, and the continued shift from shops to online,’ says Charlie Mayfield, John Lewis chairman. ‘These factors are significant for the outlook where we expect both inflationary cost pressures and competition to intensify in the market as a whole,’ he adds.

Tony Judge has been promoted from Headlam commercial director to chief operating officer and joined the board. Michael Turner has become commercial director (Coleshill Residential businesses). Dave Marsden (pictured) has become Highgrove Beds Group area sales manager for the North East, Yorkshire and Humberside.

Nick Gigg has been appointed as Gainsborough md, following the retirement of Jerry Yates after 30 years in the role. Peter Ridpath, Airsprung Beds trade sector manager, has succeeded Gigg as Swanglen Furnishings sales and marketing director.

SERVICE

Loose talk about carpet Why underlay is important Ouch. That hurts. Why does everyone treat me like a doormat? I may be old and a bit wrinkly, with a few dark shadows, but I deserve more respect. I’m doing my best to give good service. And, anyway, I wouldn’t be in this state if it wasn’t for them. I used to be one of the best. Good looking and attractive, people were drawn to me and, between you and me, they couldn’t keep their hands off me. And then I was chosen. For the first time, I was fitted. I’d been looking forward to this for such a long time, but the reality wasn’t quite what I’d expected. And everything’s gone downhill since then. I bulge in the middle and have wrinkles round my edges. Being a carpet isn’t a lot of fun when the underlay is treated as an afterthought. I can tell you from experience that underlay is essential. If it’s not chosen and fitted correctly it’ll really hurt the carpet. I’m sure my life will not be as long as it could have been. It was so exciting, that day in the shop.

Loose carpet indicates gripper problems

26

Interiors Monthly April 2017

My prospective owner spent a lot of time choosing me. She tenderly stroked my surface time and time again, even after the order had been written up. But when it came to the underlay, it was the briefest conversation with the salesperson: all about price. No explanation about the benefits to me and to her of good quality. So it was no surprise to me when she went for the cheapest. My dreams of a soft, long and comfortable life disappeared in a moment. And the fitter? He didn’t seem to care, either. I lay there on my roll listening to the hurried banging of the gripper and the occasional splintering noise as he broke it to length. It’s still loose, I can feel it. And the broken ends are jagged, too. The gripper’s not tight enough at the skirting board, so that’s why I’ve got wrinkles. My edges are coming loose and you should see the way my edges don’t follow the shaping around the doorways. You could get a mouse through there. The stapler was next. All along the

edges of the underlay, across the room and even in the doorway. Every time someone treads on one I feel a sharp pain as the staple cuts into my backing. I always thought underlay was to be taped along the joins, but now the dust is blowing through those joins giving me chills and dark lines as the dust filters through my pile. Out of sight, out of mind? Not for me. I’m constantly reminded of the importance of good underlay and good fitting, for all the wrong reasons. I’m not at my best, but who will ever know? Maybe that’s why it happened this way to me – a cover up job, hiding the signs of haste. And who knows how many other carpets have been doomed to the same fate? Take it from me: beauty is more than skin deep. Choose a good underlay and fit it well. It’ll make all the difference. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Gripper should be two-thirds of the thickness of the carpet away from the skirting boards to hold securely

SERVICES

Quartet for care Castelan has developed four brands to meet demand Previously suppliers of warranty products were single minded in what they were looking to do – provide a protection plan, handle any claims, and fix furniture in relation to those claims. When Castelan was formed in 2011 it had a clear vision to become a partner to the furniture industry that could offer services and products for the whole customer experience – whether in or out of warranty. Richard Gretton, Castelan commercial director, is confident this vision has now been realised. ‘We set out to enhance what was a really strong business base to include services that enhance many aspects of the relationship between retailer and customer – not just in relation to protection plan sales. The Castelan Group now has brands that touch different areas of the furniture industry: PremierCare protection plans; Furniture Care Network; Furniture Care Centre and Furniture Build Network. Protections plans have played a key supporting role to furniture sales for many years and they continue to offer great peace of mind to customers. Castelan’s PremierCare range can offer virtually any permutation of cover for staining, accidental damage or structural defects, which means retailers can choose the right product for their customers. Plans are developed with selected insurers so that the customer can be confident it is fully underwritten. Its in-house risk and compliance team ensures the latest requirements from regulators are understood and support its clients to ensure compliant sales practices are followed. Furniture Care Network’s team of experienced field-based technicians restore, repair and clean furniture for customers who make a claim. They are employed by Castelan, wear corporate uniforms and drive liveried vans; adding reassurance to the customer of a quality outcome. FCN’s workload not only consists of protection plan claims work but they also carry out in guarantee jobs

for many furniture clients with some of the biggest names in the business trusting them as their customer service solution. Established in 2011, Furniture Care Centre was initially an add-on service to complement Castelan’s protection plan and in guarantee clients. With the number of retailers importing furniture from overseas, the average time to source and obtain parts was dramatically increasing, along with the labour, material and freight costs. Importantly, all of this was contributing to timings far beyond what was reasonably expected for the consumer. Castelan’s retail partners also found this to be the case, so the company decided to source, cut, sew and colour its own leather panels for its client base. Over time, and with more demand requesting its services outside of a claim environment, FCC has developed into a micro-furniture factory, sourcing materials and reupholstering all aspects of furniture and products. The Furniture Build Network team was formed following demand from retail clients to build products and roomsets

where a large quantity of work is required in a demanding timeframe. It has now expanded into flatpack furniture assembly and offers this service through its retail clients. The assembly team has worked with products from all the leading retail and commercial furniture suppliers, developing a great depth and breadth of experience. ‘The range of services we are able to offer today makes Castelan Group a great company with which to partner in order to add value to both product and services. The central pillar to all being our ability to deliver on expectations,’ adds Gretton. Email: richard.gretton@castelangroup.com

SERVICES David Evans (left) and Phil Griffin

Seizing opportunities Guardsman is embracing the challenges of the marketplace This year is proving to be really exciting for Guardsman, according to Phil Griffin, Guardsman md. With David Evans as the new sales director, Griffin is both positive and optimistic despite the many widely reported challenges in the marketplace. Evans joins from National Lottery operator, Camelot, another highly regulated industry. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge and passion to develop incremental sales and profit opportunities from a variety of different retail channels, says Griffin. ‘David has an innate understanding of the value that added services and products such as Guardsman Protection Plans and Care Kits can provide to retailers, particularly as they face up to the challenging economic conditions,’ he says. ‘We’re really pleased to have David on board at this time. The current economic climate and the potential slowing of footfall isn’t something to fear: it’s something to embrace. Now is a better time than ever to focus on each

32

Interiors Monthly April 2017

individual consumer, seizing the opportunity to spend time with them and add real value to their in-store experience. Investing time to properly demonstrate the peace of mind that a Guardsman Protection Plan brings, adds value to the consumer experience and in turn maximises retailer sales and profit. Our extensive consumer research into buyer behaviour has shown that at least two thirds of customers are naturally open to the option of adding value to their furniture purchase with a protection plan,’ he explains. Guardsman’s commitment to protecting retailers’ brands is demonstrated through the dedicated account manager team that deliver simple training to retail staff. This provides the tools and techniques to convert sales in an efficient and regulation compliant manner. It is further backed up with tailored elearning courses making it easy for retail staff to review training and upgrade their understanding.

But the opportunities don’t stop at furniture protection plans. The 100-plus years of craftsman heritage brings expertise that has contributed to the development of a range of products including furniture care kits and mattress protectors. Taking note of furniture trends, Guardsman care products act as a further avenue to both increase retailer profit opportunities and further add value to customer experiences. ‘The coming year looks set to be an exciting one for Guardsman and our retail partners,’ says Griffin. ‘With David and other great new recruits strengthening our team, we are seeing our strategies delivering success. This is founded on a strong set of values, our industry expertise, and firmly putting the consumer at the heart of everything we do. So rather than worrying about the market conditions ahead we are embracing the challenge and delivering a positive outlook for Guardsman and our retail partners,’ he adds. Visit www.guardsman.co.uk

UPHOLSTERY

Growth factors Alpha Designs has a spring in its step Alpha Designs Upholstery is growing at a rapid rate. It began manufacturing seven years ago when owner Constantino Xydhias decided he needed to have his own production facility to ensure control of supply and quality. For many years he had been importing and dealing with the trials and tribulations of suppliers’ lack of support. The mission statement of the family run West Midlands business continues to be based on the original key goals: offering retail partners protection and flexibility by being a UK manufacturer, having interchangeable fabrics on unbranded products, with no online sales presence. This married with the belief that all products are to be made to a consistently high standard that Xydhias Arabella would be proud to have in his home, are standing the business in good stead, along with an emphasis on providing a personal service with a can do attitude. ‘Turnover doubled last year and with the appointment of Barry Webb as sales director last October, the aim is to continue to do so while still striving to improve on an already very high level of service,’ says Xydhias. ‘We are continually investing in new staff, development of both new products and techniques and machinery as my belief is that to be at the forefront of the industry we have to utilise all resources available to the greatest extent. Thinking out of the box is always encouraged so that we don’t necessarily do things the Halley same way as others but do them the best way for us and our customers.’ The company recognises that to be known within the industry you have to be seen and the recent January Furniture Show provided an excellent opportunity to do that. ‘Exhibitions for the business have played a major role in promoting our identity and give us an outstanding display of what we are capable of. You see the products in their finest glory and customers are showing us that they believe that too. We are delighted with the response that we received and are now following all leads up with the use of our show vans as well. ‘Spring is definitely in the air at the business and we are looking forward to retaining growth in the spring period that can traditionally be slower for the trade,’ says Webb. Interiors Monthly April 2017

With 14 unique geometric floors designed to add eye-catching vigour to any room, Karndean Designflooring has introduced its most creative residential collection to date: Kaleidoscope by Karndean Designflooring. It features a wide array of hues, shapes and patterns including cubes, hexagons, chevrons and woven designs to offer 3D impact, movement or visual contrast. Each Kaleidoscope floor has been individually cut from Karndean Designflooring’s established wood and stone luxury vinyl designs including popular colourways from its Art Select, Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Opus and Knight Tile ranges. As a standalone floor design or a feature rug-effect, the collection boasts the subtle and sophisticated chevron layout of Apex to the statement 3D effects of Cubix and Pennon. Influenced by the emerging trend for basket weave effects in hallways and dining spaces, there are also two woven designs in wood and stone with complementary borders. ‘Patterns and shapes in the modern sense can transform a space at the same time as setting the mood or ambience,’ says Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national sales manager. ‘We’re recognised for our highly realistic designs replicating the natural beauty of wood and stone, and our Kaleidoscope collection offers the same high end design and practicality you would expect from a Karndean floor, but in a wide range of striking geometric designs for the home. ‘Whereas you would normally look to upholstery, accessories and wallpaper for pattern, home decorators can now look to our luxury vinyl floor designs, whether it’s for a discreet or high impact Kaleidoscope design,’ she explains. The range is supported by dedicated POS with presenter case, marketing literature and display floors available including mini-samples of each Kaleidoscope design. Visit: www.karndean.com

Architects of flooring A design competition spearheaded Amtico’s latest range An inspirational flooring design competition for architects run by Amtico in collaboration with RIBA Journal has helped to bring about the Architects’ Choice collection of flooring patterns. The new laying pattern collection is the work of some of the most talented young architects in the country. They were tasked to come up with their best creative expressions of Amtico’s Designers’ Choice Collection, with the top three shortlisted designs from each practice making it to the final selection. DLA Design, one of six participating architectural practices, was so inspired by its shortlisted Workshop creation that it decided to refurbish its Clerkenwell, London offices and bring the exclusive

40

Interiors Monthly April 2017

design to life, providing a fantastic showcase with its creative space. Workshop is one of four Architects’ Choice product/pattern combinations that have been based on the striking and confident Arrow laying pattern. The six other laying patterns selected to create exclusive product/pattern combinations are Basket Weave, Kite, Pleat, Parquet, Varied Block and Woven. They are all presented in a brochure that tells the inspirational story of the creation of Architects’ Choice, which uses products from Amtico’s flagship Signature LVT range. The unique Workshop Arrow pattern created by DLA Design exclusively for the design competition combines dark

timber (Quill Kohl) and metallic patterns (Chroma Blue) to invoke a rich patina which contrasts with a highlight of whitewashed timber (White Wash Wood). The linear nature of the flooring conveys the metal, brick and timber materiality of the workshop buildings in the local area that have since become popular with creative industries. Stories of creative inspiration that influenced these competition creations are also shared by the five other participating practices – WHAT_architecture, TP Bennett, Cousins & Cousins, Willmore Iles and Moxon Architects – in the new Architects’ Choice brochure. ROYAL WARRANTS The Keen family have held Royal Warrants since 1929

A way of life Having a Royal Warrant influences everything Hypnos does British bed manufacturer, Hypnos, has been hand-crafting bespoke, luxury beds and mattresses for some of the finest homes, hotels and palaces for more than 100 years. Testament to its skill and heritage, the company is the proud holder of a Royal Warrant, which is a mark of true excellence in British craftsmanship, design and sustainable practises. ‘Being awarded a Royal Warrant is a prestigious accolade. It’s not just a mark of quality, expertise and the best in British craftsmanship, but also a sign of trust – trust from the royal family in Hypnos’ abilities and a level of trust for our customers to buy into,’ says James Keen, Hypnos md. He says it’s something Hypnos does not take lightly and why it is always striving to create stylish, comfortable beds that meet and surpass the high

42

standards of the Royal Warrant. ‘We’re incredibly proud of the fact that we not only supply the royal family, royal households and all of the royal residences with mattresses and beds, but we also undertake bespoke upholstery commissions. Furthermore, our active involvement also spans making bespoke beds specifically for visiting dignitaries, providing support for educational programmes based on sleep at Buckingham Palace, and supporting royal events such as the upcoming Royal Windsor Horse Show. ‘I think it’s fair to say that this accolade also challenges us to be innovative and ensures we run the business in an ethical and sustainable way, thus helping to reinforce the strength of our offering. It’s this synergy that has assisted us in breaking international markets and given our retailers confidence that our

products are of the finest quality and stand out against other manufacturers. ‘What’s more, every bed we produce is created from the finest, natural and sustainable materials, including FSC or PEFC certified timbers that have been sourced from managed forests. They are 100% recyclable at the end of their life ensuring no beds go to landfill sites, thus helping us to meet the ever increasing and demanding sustainability criteria set to Royal Warrant holders by Prince Charles through the Business in the Community network, of which Hypnos is a member. ‘The Royal Warrant has become a way of life for us, infiltrating everything we do and helping to guide us in our constant pursuit of perfection and environmentally responsible practises,’ adds Keen. ROYAL WARRANTS Left: Heirloom Below left: Mattresses are hand-made Below: Royal Guards at the Staples stand at the 2016 Royal Windsor Horse Show

Mark of trust Staples strives for excellence Staples has been serving the royal household for more than 100 years. It has been making luxury, hand-crafted beds in the UK since 1895, with the British bed manufacturer supplying a bed to King George V in 1915. Subsequent to an unfortunate fall from his horse while visiting British troops in France, the king was advised by his physicians to use a Staples bed to aid the recovery of his broken pelvis. After providing suitable support and satisfaction to the King, in the years that followed Staples beds were supplied to several of the royal residences. In 1932 a Royal Warrant was granted to Staples by King George V and has been re-granted by each successive monarch since. ‘Holding a Royal Warrant for over 85 years is a great privilege and has become

44

an integral part of the Staples’ history and brand,’ says Paul Little, Staples sales director. ‘It’s not only a sign of quality, expertise and the best in British craftsmanship, but a mark of trust from the royal family, that builds a subsequent level of trust between us and our customers. ‘Since 1895, generations of Staples craftsmen have handed down their knowledge and expertise to maintain the highest manufacturing standard: embodying the meticulous attention to detail that Staples beds are synonymous with. ‘It is important to us to keep alive today the traditional skills and values upon which the brand was founded 122 years ago,’ he explains. Today, Staples’ beds are hand-crafted using the best natural fillings procured

from British farms and businesses, cementing its hard fought reputation of high luxury quality. For many years Staples has been the only bed manufacturer invited to exhibit at the Royal Windsor Horse Show along with fellow Royal Warrant holders, united by a commitment to the highest British standards of service and quality. ‘The Royal Warrant has certainly contributed to building Staples’ reputation as the ultimate in luxury natural beds and it has been important for us to support the Royal Warrant Holder’s Association at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. It is a prestigious accolade and continues to underpin how we operate as a company constantly striving for excellence, innovation and superior comfort,’ adds Little. Visit: www.staplesbeds.co.uk

Tropical trend Minerals, tropics and monochrome make up the SS2017 offer Since introducing textiles in 2014, Gallery Direct has continued to develop the range, introducing products and broadening the offering. The initial collection featured cushions, throws and bedding across its three textile brands: Gallery Home, Kilburn & Scott and Parisian House. As well as expanding these original product categories, bean bags and relaxed seating have been introduced to offer customers even more choice. The team, led by Jayne Zalega, Gallery Direct business development director textiles, is continually designing and sourcing fabrics, and developing new lines. Hand-produced in-house artwork has been used for some of the products, from flamingoes to marbled fabric, and from geometric patterns to pineapples; all designed to offer customers a wide choice of exclusive products. extension to the mineral trend with new throws and cushions, as well as striking monochrome designs and tropical trend cushions. With bold colourful leaves in shades of green, and bright florals and exotic birds to create accent cushions and throws, the tropical pieces are great for making a statement in any interior. ‘Having the skilled team here at Gallery, to not only develop our range, but to produce original artwork and fabric designs for use on products, means we can offer customers a fantastic choice of unique high quality products,’ says Zalega. ‘I particularly love our new Toucan Trio cushion which features our exclusive hand-painted design – it makes a great colourful, fun statement to add character to a home. And for those who like a coordinated look, there is a great framed picture of the toucan.’ On the bedding side, Chelsea is

manufactured from 300-thread count Egyptian cotton and features marrow embroidered stitching detail. Chelsea is offered in five soft colourways for the quilt cover sets, Oxford pillowcases, and sheets, two with contrast marrow stitching, along with two additional colourways for sheets to complement the contrast stitching sets. All are available in four sizes. For a more decadent look, the Glamour Jaquard and Elegance Jaquard quilt cover sets give an opulent feel. Both feature delicate metallic thread and crystal button detail on the pillow cases. ‘The breadth of our range, with designs and styles to suit all tastes, is proving extremely successful. But we never like to stand still, so we’re currently working on two new product categories to widen our collection still further,’ adds Zalega. Visit: www.gallerydirect.co.uk

Premier performance Mlily, Manchester United’s official mattress and pillow partner, is developing its association with the club To celebrate World Sleep Day last month, Mlily launched an initiative with its global partner Manchester United. The campaign, which garnered over one million hits on social media, featured an exclusive interview with Dr Robin Thorpe, Manchester United head of regeneration and recovery at the club’s Aon Training Complex. ‘Recovery is such an important part of the training process. Enhancing sleep during and after training is of paramount importance to us right now,’ he says. Mlily has launched an initiative with its partner to improve players’ sleep, working with Thorpe’s team to customise mattresses that meet player needs and standards. Sleeping behaviours and patterns will be monitored, and both parties will continue to work collaboratively to find new ways to turn sleep into better performance. ‘It’s an exciting time for us,’ says Pomi Khan, Mlily UK ceo. ‘We’re doing something in the Premier League that no other team is doing, the benefits of which will not only affect the players at Manchester United but anyone who buys our mattresses.’ Visit: www.mlily.uk

Mammoth Has Rugby’s Back In Exclusive Partnership With The Rugby Players Association Health and wellbeing specialist, Mammoth, has strengthened their relationship with the Rugby Player’ Association (RPA) by signing an exclusive partnership to provide sleep and wellness advice, education and support to professional rugby players throughout England. As well as continuing to be a Benefits Provider to the players, Mammoth will play a key role in providing education and welfare programmes for professional male and female players throughout the domestic and international game.

Mammoth’s road to this exclusive deal began five years ago when a relationship was built with the RPA based on Mammoth’s expertise in the ‘science of comfort’. Since then, the two organisations have worked together to broker a partnership that will enable RPA members to learn about and benefit from the technologies and innovations used in Mammoth’s range of sleep-enhancing mattresses, as well as the ground-breaking upholstery ranges, and the stringent clinical testing that has gone into their development. As a direct result of the existing partnership with the RPA, there are around 250 active and retired rugby players currently sleeping on Mammoth mattresses.

Damian Hopley, Group CEO of The Rugby Players’ Association, said “Supporting our members’ wellbeing is a fundamental role for the RPA, so we are extremely pleased to announce our Official Partnership with Mammoth. Sleep plays an important role in physical health and recovery and is something our members take very seriously as part of their overall performance. We are confident that this partnership with Mammoth will assist our members throughout their rugby careers.”

“Supporting our members’ wellbeing is a fundamental role for the RPA, so we are extremely pleased to announce our Official Partnership with Mammoth.” “At Mammoth, we are driven by success and our passion for educating the world about the importance of sleep and comfort,” explains John Tuton, MD and founder of Mammoth. “Our ethos surrounding the ‘science of comfort’ and the technologies and innovations we’ve designed to be encompassed in our mattresses have been soundly tested by experts and have been proven to be massively successful. The team at Mammoth is very excited about this partnership with the RPA and we can’t wait to start working with the Association in April to educate its members about the role of sleep and all round comfort in performance, recovery and wellbeing.”

Mammoth’s Medical Grade Foam™ mattresses have been clinically proven to improve sleep by Northumbria University’s Centre for Sleep Research and have been highly commended by NHS Innovations in the field of pressure relief. The technologies and innovations used in Mammoth’s mattresses has also been designed into the company’s upholstery range, which is currently available across the UK. Mammoth also works in close partnership with the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.

The RPA is the organisation which looks after the collective interests of professional rugby players throughout England, as well as a number of former professionals. By working with Mammoth, the RPA hopes to add value to the benefits it already provides to its members, using the expertise at Mammoth’s disposal.

BEDS AND BEDROOM

Take a rest from apps Social media can disrupt sleep Many of us are aware of the advice that we should monitor and reduce use of technology in the run up to bed time to help us sleep. Silentnight is calling for the country to address its tech-life balance following a new study examining the relationship between different social media channels and quality of sleep. The bed manufacturer commissioned research that surveyed more than 2,000 UK residents. It found Snapchat users were the most sleep deprived of all social media users, while 20% of those surveyed admitted to dreaming about social channels. According to the research, 68% of Snapchat users claimed the platform prevented them from sleeping. Instagram users didn’t fare much better, with 62% saying that scrolling through the app kept them from getting quality sleep and more than half said they checked their feeds during the night. The biggest users of both networks were those aged between 16-24, with 43% of this group admitting to never going a day without social media. Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, physiologist, sleep therapist and Silentnight sleep expert, believes the results point to an increasingly image-focused culture and a growing pressure not to miss out. ‘With Snapchat in particular, “snaps” are only live for 24 hours and then they are gone, making it all the more tempting to keep checking the app so as not to miss out. It’s easy to see why this habit is creeping into bedtime routines,’ she says. While Facebook and Twitter users were found to be sleeping better than those using Snapchat and Instagram, more than 40% of people claimed to be addicted to social media. ‘It’s quite concerning to see just how much people are using social media at night time. It’s proven that the blue light from phones and tablets wakes up the brain making it difficult to wind down

54

Interiors Monthly April 2017

Above: Checking social media during the night can be detrimental Right: A quality mattress should be combined with a healthy bedtime routine Below: Disturbed sleep can lead people to catch up where they can

and fall asleep. So punctuating the night with social media checks can be detrimental,’ she adds. Nick Booth, Silentnight marketing director, says a balance needs to be struck. ‘Our research suggests that a healthy bedtime routine is just as important as sleeping on a quality mattress when it comes to achieving better sleep. It’s unrealistic to completely ban mobile devices from the bedroom, but people need to be more aware of the impact they are having to achieve a better tech-life balance. Try to stop scrolling through social media 60 to 90 minutes before bedtime. This will allow your brain to wind down and lead to

deeper, more restorative sleep.’ Booth says the company will continue to invest in researching sleeping habits to help with new product development. ‘We are passionate about understanding our consumer, what they are looking for, and what sleep problems we can help them to overcome. Sleep plays such a major and often under-rated role in people’s health and wellbeing and we are determined to stay at the forefront in understanding the consumer and offering advice and solutions along with great mattresses and beds, to help everyone get the best night’s sleep possible,’ adds Booth. ‘The second floor is dedicated to Milan, because we could not neglect a floor in representation of our city,’ explains Rocchi. ‘Just like Milan this apartment is very elegant in the design of the spacial divisions: the large oversized table is situated right in the centre, the double sofa and the lack of a cooking area accentuates the moderate conviviality of the Milanese personality. The tones are

Milan

those of our city that from greys fade into blues. The real protagonist of this space is the floor that, just like the smog of the city, has been treated with black dust that entered the wood’s grain giving irregular and intense shades.’ The third floor is Colour, to create an environment where the predominant note of the tone finds its full development. Teal fades though the project into several shades leading from green to blue, in a palette of infinite nuances of deep and soothing colour. The top floor represents The White Night, in antithesis with the first floor. It relates to the concept of white as summation of all the other colours and it refers to the thought of the night as the sum of the events of our day. Research about the ability to reset the mind and recharge during the sleep led to the design of a night suite conceived in shades of white. Visit: www.salvioniarredamenti.it

SOFTWARE

Far right: Stephen Connolly Below and right: Ordorite Software at this year’s January Furniture Show

Retail meets technology Twin passions have been combined Stephen Connolly, Ordorite Software ceo, was brought up in the furniture industry, and from a young age played an active part in his parents’ furniture store. ‘From the age of 15 I was often left to run my parents’ store when they were away; dealing with deliveries, goods-in, sales and everything in between. I learnt some valuable lessons from my father such as margin is essential, and the word discounting should be banned from the dictionary,’ he says. Although his first love was in furniture retailing, he completed degrees in electronics and software engineering, and pursued a career in technology, rather than following in his parents’ footsteps. Starting out as an assistant engineer with CBE, he then became a senior

60

Interiors Monthly April 2017

systems implementer, working alongside some of the largest retail chains throughout the Republic of Ireland such as Spar and SuperValue. From there, he took up a software position for furniture retailer Arramount, to develop a system that would help it run its business. ‘It was from this that I realised the need for a cloud based software system specifically built for the furniture industry. With the progression of the cloud, it made perfect business sense to create a system accessible via the Internet,’ he explains. Putting his knowledge of software into practice, Connolly founded his first business venture: Goodside Business Solutions, a technology consultancy with multiple customers nationally and internationally. From this venture, a

spin-off company was created in 2006: Ordorite Software, which saw him bring his two passions together, furniture retailing and software. Ten outlet chain EZ Living Furniture is among its customers in the Republic of Ireland. In 2015, the natural progression was to internationalise the business, and the UK market was key to this strategy. Having acquired investments both privately and from Enterprise Ireland, the internationalisation has proven successful in launching the product across the UK, with customers including nine-store chain Brand Interiors. ‘My passion is to constantly innovate and drive the product forward so that it continues to be a leading, cutting edge system for the industry,’ he adds. Born again Contempo Carpets reimagines flooring ‘At Contempo Carpets we want to reunite arts and manufacturing to reform and revitalise flooring,’ says Steve Evans, Contempo Carpets operations manager. ‘We are dedicated to reimagining plain and patterned textiles to inspire creative interiors, and fashion elegant, modern and luxurious floors. ‘Our core production fibre is wool; wool is comfortable, sustainable, durable, easy to maintain and the perfect companion to create beautiful, long lasting and creative floors.’ Contempo’s roots have been firmly embedded in manufacturing and the production of woollen spun carpet yarn, carpets and rugs since 1948. ‘We believe it is our being in control of

the raw materials used in manufacture and our 69 years of textile production history that sets us apart from the competition. Excellence in the quality of fibre used in production is the bedrock of first class textiles, and as a vertically integrated supplier we have full control of what it takes to make a really great carpet. ‘We believe our collection is not only exciting and distinctive but with high definition in design and colour as a natural standard. Contempo will operate on a partner basis only in the UK,’ adds Evans. Contempo is launching five ranges this month. Nexus offers a palette of 32 of the

latest and most contemporary plain colours. Nexus Mouline is a two-colour high definition configuration fashioning a vibrant mix of colour to blend fashion with practicality. Nexus Links is a stripe ‘reimagined in an eclectic colour balance that coordinates perfectly with Nexus plain shades.’ Bauhaus is made up of three pattern collections of plaids, circles and squares that coordinate with Nexus. The fifth collection is Monokrøm, a nine-row axminster for residential and commercial applications in two-tone black and white. Contempo Carpets, tel: 0800 689 4741

LIVING AND DINING Bella can be delivered fully assembled the next working day

In-store exclusivity Jual has created a high street only assembled range When Jual showed a new living room collection at the AIS Furniture Show in January, existing or previous stockists may have been expecting something along the lines of the successful flatpacked Curve range. However, Jual surprised retailers with the fully assembled, high street exclusive walnut veneer Bella collection. Bella consists of six pieces: 1,500mm and 1,300mm TV stands, coffee table, lamp table, tall cabinet and sideboard. However, Jual hasn’t abandoned its signature curve all together: the doors

and drawers on this collection are finished with unique curves that act as handles. A black gloss strip was added behind the doors and drawers to really bring the curve to life. All products are delivered the next working day. ‘All the products are finished using the highest quality solid walnut veneers,’ says Julie Powell, Jual director. ‘The launch of this range has taken us in a different direction with our customers. All our customers know that our existing products have an online presence. We

have enjoyed great success in this sector because of the type of product we provide and the DHD service we offer. However, we fully understand that our high street customers have different needs and want different products to online retailers. ‘As a result we have developed the fully assembled Bella range and given high street retailers complete exclusivity of it. We hope this demonstrates that we are committed to the independent bricks and mortar retailer.’ Jual Furnishings, tel: 01443 816 982

Greendale Carpets & Flooring Greendale Carpets & Flooring is a not for profit group that supplies carpets for its members from its own stockholding warehouse which holds more than 2,000 rolls of carpet. The group has over 50 suppliers and more than 100 own-labelled carpet ranges all renamed to colour level, enabling members to compete with multiple ownlabel ranges, widely distributed manufacturers’ products and Internet marketed ranges, and gives them local exclusivity. The group actively discourages online or national marketing as the member in their local area is the priority. All Greendale members belong to BIRA, the association of independent retailers, and qualify for a range of benefits including preferential credit card rates. The group has its own website with consumer information as well as a member area and employs agents to help members locally. Greendale still has exclusive areas of the UK available and encourages any retailer who shares its ethos to make contact. Visit: www.greendalecarpets.co.uk

Metro Metro is a group of independent retailers from the smallest operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is vital to Metro members, which is why all group activity is always optional, allowing members to select the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control of their own businesses. Since 1995 the group has had an own-label brand, Carpet 1st, encompassing the bestselling and performing products. Members can maximise profits while supporting the group and authorised suppliers. Metro has a dedicated marketing department with over 30 years of retail flooring experience, complete with a mobile marketing studio. This service allows retailers’ showrooms to be transformed, on-site, with remarkable results. The service particularly appeals to new members that have previously not had access to professional and impartial marketing advice, design and production of material. There’s so much more to Metro than just buying flooring. Visit: www.carpet1st.co.uk

SMG SMG is the largest and most progressive flooring group in the UK. Members can proudly retain their independence while taking advantage of the most comprehensive group benefits package available. Established retailers with existing direct accounts will benefit from SMG’s special pricing, rebates and promotions that are not available to independent retailers. Using Site Draw (left) and Carman (right) means freeing businesses from piles of paperwork

Measuring up Computers for Flooring has teamed with Pacific Solutions Computers for Flooring has secured an exclusive partnership with US software company Pacific Solutions to bring its industry leading laser measure and estimate software to the UK. Estimators use a Leica Disto laser measure to create the floorplans at the customer site using Pacific Solutions’ Site Draw application on an iPad, iPhone or Windows tablet. Roll layouts, tile patterning, wood planking, carpet base, pattern matched goods and so on can be planned and then uploaded into Computers for Flooring’s Carman management software to start the quotation. This saves time and ensures a quick and accurate quotation is provided to the customer. The company will demonstrate the system at the show. Carman is a user friendly, cloud based management system designed for the flooring industry. Computers for Flooring works continually with specialists to ensure that its software ticks every box when it comes to running a successful flooring business. It recognises that every business is different, which is why it offers tailored solutions. From independent operators to multi-site organisations, there is a package to suit. Its pricing policy, including a one-off set-up fee, is geared with affordability in mind.

Interiors Monthly April 2017

Being cloud based, the system is compatible with a host of devices: PCs, Macs, tablets, iPhones and Android phones. Optional extras such as a wireless laser scanning barcode application, email hosting, EPOS integration, and VOIP telephone integration can be incorporated. Hard and soft sells Deacon Jones’ bandwagon rolls on

Following a successful launch at the January Furniture Show, the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors carpet collection will be highlighted at Cranmore Park. Collated by football and movie hard man Vinnie Jones, along with friend and carpet expert Danny Deacon, the range has eight styles. Four are produced using X-Tron polypropylene, representing Jones’s harder side, while four are produced in polypropylenes and polyamides that are extra caring to the touch, demonstrating a soft side too. ‘The Buying Groups’ National Flooring Show is always a great opportunity for us to further drive the year’s headline collections,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director. ‘The Deacon Jones by Crown Floors concept, as predicted, has seen unprecedented levels of uptake since its inception, and this is not simply down to Vinnie’s celebrity status. These are some of the highest quality wall-to-wall options to have emerged from the Crown Floors think tank, and with this in mind we look forward to presenting them to a whole new audience at BGNFS.’ Deacon Jones by Crown Floors is backed by innovative POS for use in-store, including a double-sided book stand holding a near life-size Vinnie Jones image. Take shape Allura has new forms and sizes In response to the growing trend for combining shapes, sizes and colours to create contemporary interiors, Forbo Flooring Systems has refreshed its LVT collection, Allura. Playing with scale, direction and combinations across the range, the result is the introduction of new shapes and sizes to the market, alongside digital print options. ‘Our European LVT factory and team has expanded in size over the past few years bringing to the design process not just new people, but their personal experiences, sources of inspiration and enthusiasm for bringing never before seen designs to floors,’ says Julie Dempster, Forbo marketing manager. ‘One great example of this is the Hungarian Point plank, cut on a 45° angle to produce realistic herringbone and chevron designs with ease. By using a single colour or a combination of shades, a range of sophisticated floor designs with a delicate vertical pattern can be produced – resulting in traditional patterns but with a fresh, modern aesthetic.’ Part of Forbo’s largest wood offer to date, there are also new contemporary solids that include strong feature colours and more planks than before, with in-register embossing to bring designs such as oak and pine to life. For a fresh approach to stone, the new marble options bring a soft, natural angular flow to a timeless floor design. ‘Allura is 100% phthalate free, REACH* regulation compliant and produced in Europe with low emission levels. The excellent dimensional stability ensures safe and hygienic floors, as dirt isn’t trapped in the seams; and the

Triple enhancements A trio of brands will have new products Hugh Mackay will relaunch one of its most successful ranges, The Deco Collection. With vibrant new shades, the range will be made up of 25 stripes, 15 new zig-zags and 19 coordinating plains. The three-ply, 100% wool loop will be shown in a new presenter and POS. ‘Deco Stripe, as it was formerly known, not only sold well but performed well over the six-year period since its launch. The addition of the new zig-zags and the new colours in the stripe, should push it to the front of customers’ loop pile offering,’ says Vince Holden, Hugh Mackay sales director. Sister company Whitestone Weavers will enhance its Hasslefree brand with the launch of Hasslefree Ultimate. Using the same 100% Softlux yarn as Hasslefree Sensuous, the range will be available in 1,050g Classic and 1,800g Elite. The collection will be launched in 16 modern shades.

‘Anyone who has used Hasslefree Sensuous will tell you that the appearance retention from this yarn is second to none. With Hasslefree Ultimate you’ll have a satisfied customer for many years to come,’ says Holden. Thomas Witter will relaunch its Accolade berber twist range at the show. It will be available in 20 shades, with the latest shades being predominantly grey. ‘The range has a very “country” feel so still has the tones of golds, blue and green that made the range so popular in the past. Accolade is available in two weights – 55oz and 40oz – 4m and 5m widths, and is 80% wool, 15% polypropylene and 5% polyester. SHOW GUIDE

Heritage flooring brands have been refreshed for consumer tastes Interfloor will showcase new contemporary looks for its market-leading heritage brands Tredaire and Duralay at Cranmore Park, as well as the latest additions to its sales and marketing support package for retailers. ‘Providing better looking and better performing flooring products that genuinely help our customers to profitably grow their business is our priority,’ says John Cooper, Interfloor ceo. Top-selling Tredaire, which has been on the market for over 50 years, and Duralay have undergone a brand refresh to make them more appealing to today’s style-conscious consumers. Interfloor has also introduced more contemporary-styled POS materials for both brands, including a merchandising stand, to enhance the in-store experience. ‘In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and hard flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale: with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood, and high customer satisfaction levels. Our new merchandising stand helps retailers to promote their underlay product and gives them an interactive and informative tool to use as part of the in-store sales process,’ says John Moodie, national accounts manager. ‘Tredaire is renowned for its underfoot

comfort and adding warmth and cosiness to any room, giving an experience akin to “treading on air”. With many homeowners opting for soft furnishings that create a feeling of luxury, branded Tredaire polyurethane foam underlays including Sensation, Ambience and Citra are popular choices.’ The Duralay Timbermate range of specialist underlays for laminate and wood flooring includes the bestselling sponge rubber brands Timbermate Excel and Silentfloor Gold, which can reduce in-room noise by 30%. Duralay Heatflow underlays have low tog ratings, which allow the warmth generated by underfloor heating to pass quickly into the room for both carpet and wood or laminate flooring, bringing greater heating efficiency and the potential of reducing heating bills. ‘With almost 1,000 flooring accessory products in our portfolio, Interfloor is a one-stop-shop stocking everything needed for the installation of floorcoverings, including top-selling brands Gripperrods and Stikatak. Our new productpacked Underlay & Accessories Collection catalogue offers some of the most comprehensive information in the sector and is free to download from our website,’ adds Cooper. Quietly simple Karndean Designflooring will debut its first rigid core collection With 12 authentic wood designs inspired by European and North American woods in a 1,420mm x 225mm plank, Korlok by Karndean Designflooring features a 5G vertical click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing for quick and easy installation. ‘Korlok can be installed over most existing hard surface floors or uneven subfloors without the worry of exposing any imperfections underfoot, thanks to its innovative K-Core technology. Unlike other rigid core products and click laminate flooring, Korlok can be scored and snapped for ease of installation like our established Gluedown and LooseLay ranges,’ explains Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring national sales manager. With its acoustic benefits, Korlok can reduce noise transfer to rooms below by up to 19dB, without the need for underlay, making it ideal for a playroom, home office, bedroom or loft conversion. ‘The familiar click locking system and enhanced core technology means installers can achieve an authentic and luxurious floor in any space without the need for adhesive and with minimal subfloor preparation. It ideal for busy homeowners or families looking for less upheaval and disruption,’ she says. ‘Importantly for our retailer network, Korlok offers a new flooring solution for any type of subfloor with a wide array of premium wood designs to choose from. Quieter than traditional laminate and warmer underfoot than real wood, Korlok is waterproof, easy to clean and maintain, and compatible with underfloor heating.’ It is available from next month and offers a lifetime residential guarantee. SHOW GUIDE

Cloud base MasterPiece Cloud has been in operation for a year A year on from its launch at last year’s show, MasterPiece Cloud has proven itself in the retail arena. ‘The flexibility from being able to use the cloud version on any iPad, Android tablet or PC has meant that the retailer rarely has to buy new hardware to use the system. Jobs are saved to the cloud so the retailer has access from any machine in any location,’ says Charles Pearson, MasterPiece System md. ‘The cloud server has been coping well with over 7,000 jobs a week and there is now an archiving facility so that jobs can be kept long term. The tightness of the plans generated and the accuracy of the underlay estimate has been proven to give the retailer a competitive edge.’ A facility for costing jobs, providing an estimate to the customer, and generating an invoice once the customer decides to proceed has been added. ‘This facility is very useful for retailers who like to quote in the home. It is available as an optional add-on for a monthly amount. The retailer is able to define his own products and prices via a user friendly product library editing system,’ says Pearson. Various schemes of teamwork are now supported. For

retailers with a clear demarcation between mobile estimators and in-store sales staff, the passing of responsibility between the roles is supported. Jobs are loaded by store user, the estimator then conducts the visit and responsibility passes back to the store. For smaller teams where the user is partly in store and partly doing visits, the system can be configured so that everyone sees each other’s jobs. MasterPiece continues to be developed to support commercial and new build operations and retailers which sell LVT product sets from suppliers including Amtico, Moduleo, Karndean, Marmoleum, Lifestyle and Project Floors. ‘Enhancements have given closer alignment with the way UK retailers operate. For instance, MasterPiece now directly supports retailers who price with underlay and fitting included and also those who quote ballpark prices without having measurements. MasterPiece’s integration with other UK systems such as Swan Retail is bearing fruit, with more retailers who do both carpet and furniture taking an interest,’ adds Pearson. Velvet revolution Vibrancy is at the heart of launches ‘As we ebb out of winter and tentatively ditch our woollies, our mood is ready for an uplift and we scout the high street for pops of colour to add to our wardrobes – and our homes are no different. Our velvets this season are rich and vibrant and can be seen on our must-have accent chairs of which there are several key new shapes,’ says Michelle HoinesWhite, Alexander and James brand director. She says shades to watch out for are: Marmalade, a sunburnt shade of orange; Honeycreeper, a jewel-like botanical green; and Ochre, pure gold. The Retreat Collection is fast becoming the company’s lead signature design, its ample curves and oversized chesterfield classic nature is enhanced by rustic leathers that are warm and soft to the

We will introduce our new Oromo brushed leather and combine this with tactile velvets and gentle metallic touches,’ says Steve Morgan, Alexander and James sales director. The latest designs can be seen at the new look showroom at Harrington Mill. ‘The Fabric Studio has been busy scouring the globe for new materials that give a real sense of an eclectic, welltravelled, richly lived life. Stylist Julie Smith selected and developed exclusive designs for the Alexander and James studio. ‘My favourite is the Suzani fabric which is an emerging trend that brings a global heritage flavour into interiors. Suzani decorative tribal textures have long been associated with expressive disc-like motifs reminiscent of the sun, moon and floral elements and this pretty, bold pattern is beautiful dropped into a background of plain velvets. International celebration Proposte celebrates its 25th edition After two shows taking place in April, Proposte returns to its usual May slot this year from 3-5 May at Villa Erba in Cernobbio, on the banks of Lake Como. ‘In 2015, with the admission of three Turkish companies to the show, Proposte began a process of internationalisation and that continues in 2017, turning its attention to the American market with the inclusion of MLT and JB Martin. Other debutants this year are Spanish company Hijos De Antonio Ferre; Neutex Home Deco from Germany and Turkish company Guleser Tekstil,’ says Mauro Cavelli, Proposte president. In 1993 the first exhibition had 44 exhibitors, this year there will be 89. ‘Proposte has been constantly evolving and growing year after year to become an important and exclusive showcase for the new collections of furnishing and curtain fabrics, which attracts more and more industry insiders,’ he says. This year colour will again be central in Proposte’s visual identity, thanks to the collaboration with Milanese artist Paolo Gonzato with whom the show is creating a unique project to celebrate the 25th exhibition. The graphic identity revolves around fabrics and takes its inspiration from a unique piece of art that will inspire a 25-piece limited edition work of art, that will be given to exhibitors that have participated in every show. The geometric symbol of the exhibition, a contoured, painted brass plaque, features a multi-dimensional shape. Like a twofaced Janus it gazes towards the future still keeping an eye on the past that allowed it to get where it is today. Proposte’s social media promotion continues on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, where news about the fair and its exhibitors will be shared. #Proposte25 will be the main hashtag of the 25th edition. THE CAMPAIGN FOR WOOL INTERNATIONAL CARPET & RUG AWARD WINNERS 2017 We are pleased to announce the winners of the second Campaign for Wool International Carpet and Rug Awards. Deirdre Dyson’s Vista Collection – Bulrushes won the Hand-knotted Rug award. ‘Dyson’s training in fine art is apparent by her masterful use of colour. Bulrushes uses gradual change in hue and precise contrast in light and shade to create the illusion of reflection on still water, to beautiful effect.’ Runners-up: Amy Kent Bespoke Rugs’ Art on Rugs Agate and Jennifer Manners’ New Collection Erased.

Fleetwood Fox’s Bespoke Cordwell Colour 2 won the Country Homes & Interiors award for Best Use of Texture and Pattern for the Modern Country Home. ‘Interesting yet accessible; Cordwell’s subtle weave and bold borders are perfect for a stair runner or hallway. Light colours give a modern feel, while the woven texture adds an extra dimension.’ Runners-up: Brockway Carpets’ Natural Tweed and Harlequin’s Veraccio Pewter.

Brintons’ Altered Gravity by Stacy Garcia won the Designer Collaboration of the Year. ‘Brintons’ eighth collaboration with award winning US designer Stacy Garcia includes 14 patterns and draws inspiration from diverse disciplines of the art universe; abstract expressionism collides with contemporary graphic design, and digitally rendered textures melt between layers of mixed media paintings.’ Runners-up: Alternative Flooring with Liberty Fabrics and John Lewis with Genevieve Bennett.

Flock’s Gaia Wool Collection – Kumi won the Country Life Rug Design of the Year award. ‘Kumi combines bold stripes in tonal colours with woven plait fibres as a design detail. Handmade by artisans using ancient techniques to create innovative designs, Kumi adds an element of texture and nature.’ Runners-up: Amy Kent Bespoke Rugs’ Art on Rugs Cirrus and Anta’s Highland and Islands Mingulay.

The Rug Company’s Tim Gosling collaboration Empire and Deco Border won the Homes & Antiques Best Carpet Style for the Period House of 2017 award. ‘It encapsulates the elegance of the Art Deco period in a pared-back palette of muted silver and bronze that emulate the iconic metallic palette of the 1920s and 1930s.’ Runners-up: Jennifer Manners’ New Collection Erased and Amy Kent Bespoke Rugs’ Art on Rugs Cirrus.

IFFS attracted 428 exhibitors from 35 countries

Celebrations were in order for d-Bodhi as this year is its 10th anniversary and 10th appearance at the show. The Singaporean company has established a solid reputation for its environmental credentials, only using reclaimed and recycled materials. The past decade has seen it build up a customer base in 35 countries. At the show it adopted a theme of enlightenment. ‘We interpret enlightenment as a call to do things differently. This is reflected in the materials we use for our furniture – we only use reclaimed and recycled materials and in our production methods that only consist of hand-crafting without the use of big machinery,’ says Raymond Davis, d-Bodhi founder. The Tuareg collection exuded every bit of the company’s signature combination: unpolished reclaimed wood with slick, black frames. The faded earthy colours echo those of the Saharan desert, hence its name. It also showed off its Shelfmate system of five reclaimed teak shelves with black picture-like frames than can be mixed and matched. Canadian exhibitor CDI Furniture, making its show debut, also drew inspiration from deserts with its Sand bedroom collection featuring a weatherworn finish. Danish upholstery company Wendelbo showed off its latest contemporary designs produced at its Saigon, Vietnam factory.

Saigon firm, District Eight, highlighted its range of industrial designs. Journey East from Singapore highlighted its PLAYplay living and dining collection, including a dining table that wants to be used for table tennis. Danish lighting firm Vita Copenhagen showcased its Eos collection featuring goose feather coverings (the feathers are a by-product of the food industry). Thailand’s Asian Design House adopted a more rustic look for its lighting, with individual pieces of timber combined either as a giant torch made from a bundle of sticks or a cocoon-like structure. Reaching goals The 35 exhibitors saw a constant stream of visitors The show enjoyed a rise in visitor numbers of more than a quarter while the number of companies visiting increased by almost half. There was a near constant flow of visitors at the recent event to the 35 high end fabric producers and suppliers from Belgium, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Germany and the UK at Chelsea FC’s Stamford Bridge stadium. Visitors and exhibitors included the majority of the UK upholstery industry and a large proportion of major UK furniture retailers, there to select fabrics for upholstery and soft furnishings, which will be exclusive to them. Exhibitors and visitors were impressed. Karl Walker, Lebus director, says: ‘The radical transformation of this exhibition over the past couple of years has elevated it to the top of our “must see” list. It now offers the depth and variety of supplier base to fully justify a two-day trip. The choice of venue and

organisation works extremely well, it is now a permanent fixture in our diary.’ James Lowe, Aqua Clean UK sales manager, says: ‘We have had a really good show, our new easy-clean fabrics have been exceptionally well received and we have been non-stop with existing and new customers. This show gets better every year and the quality of the companies showing is exceptional.’ ‘We are delighted with the success of this year’s show and have received many complimentary comments from exhibitors and visitors. All of the British and Belgian exhibitors, along with many others, have already confirmed their attendance at next year’s event,’ says Jackie Bazeley, md of organiser BFM. ‘The substantial increase in the visitor numbers proves the value of this show to UK upholstery manufacturers. We will announce the dates as soon as we can confirm them with Chelsea FC and look forward to another

successful show next year,’ she adds. Abraham Moon introduced Moorland II, a semi-contemporary check in seven colours and a lighter weight. British Velvets debuted Harrow, a cotton velvet with non-pile direction finish; the water repellent Kensington and Henley, a blended cotton with higher sheen. Norfolk House showed eight of its mill clients: Teksko Velvets and ESC from Turkey; Dolcevita, Home Decor and Mood from Italy; Canete from Spain and UTM and JSML from India. ‘We were delighted with the quality of customers we met and it was great to meet so many new ones: from major upholstery manufacturers to high end brands and major retail chains. We look forward to showing again next year,’ says Diane Harding, Norfolk House md. Prosetex introduced a jacquard cotton velvet and a multicolour velvet. Visit: www.londonfabricshow.uk
