The San Francisco studio of Maaike Evers and Mike Simonian conjures up a neat seat that totally suits the times: a space-conscious bench (with a cool flat-leg detail) that comfortably accommodates two sitters while providing subtle separation between them in the form of side-by-side cushions—aka “individual islands”—and an optional central accessory: choose a dimmable light, a fixed circular or swiveling oblong table, or a floating tray for use as a catch-all or object display. rodolfo dordoni’s joint effort The Milanese creative’s debut product for Spanish manufacturer Andreu World is an elegant, timeless chair with artful frame of FSC-certified solid ash. Look closely: In all versions (side, lounge, and armchair), Rizo’s defining feature is expert woodwork, in the form of exquisitely resolved joints harmoniously integrated into the single-color or two-tone upholstery. Dordoni conceived the chair for comfort—take a load off and enjoy its body-hugging ergonomics—and minimal carbon footprint; though designed and crafted to withstand the test of time, Rizo dismantles easily at the end of its life cycle. space 10-132

The New Hampshire–based textile innovator and Cranbrook alum launched pattern library Design Pool in 2019 as a resource for commercially focused interior designers, hence the emphasis on product performance, sustainability, and customizability. Her latest collection is Invisible Threads—so-named for the ties that bind loved ones, even when physically apart—which aims to bring warmth, comfort, and a handcrafted quality to healthcare textiles. The 10 patterns began life as actual embroideries, the delicate stitches digitized and printed on a wipeable PVC-free faux-leather incorporating recyclable and renewable content and able to withstand rigorous cleaning requirements. Textiles are printed on demand, meaning the scale or coloring can be adjusted—a common, er, thread for all Design Pool offerings. space 7-3050

Design duo Shaun Smith and Jeff Theesfeld debut a task chair that checks all the boxes: ergonomic, comfortable, stylish, streamlined, versatile, eco-minded—and perfect for WFH and in-office alike. Jade for KFI Studios features a weight-sensitive mechanism that automatically adjusts to the sitter, plus discreetly integrated height-adjustment and tilt-lock controls. The designers’ ambitious effort to eliminate the use of new plastic translated to PET felt for the back cover and seat bottom (and the arm pads, too, if desired) and recycled plastic for the casters and optional arm caps. Light the way forward with designer Tristan Lohner’s clever multiuse lamp, Aplô, which can be handheld like a supersized flashlight, attached to a strap to become a hanging pendant, clipped to a special wall mount to become a sconce, or its flat and stable base set down on a table. Talk about go-anywhere, do-anything, jack-of-all-trades. Recyclable aluminum and polyethylene make up the battery-powered LED lamp. Artists in the 1950s and ’60s created an exciting movement that invited viewer response, and these fabrics are equally compelling. When designer Steve Chase introduced the Monterey sofa in 1986, it became

an instant icon. (Celebrity clients such as Farrah Fawcett and Gene Hackman were early fans of his Palm Springs aesthetic.) This reissue feels every bit as contemporary as it did then, its channeled form just as luscious. Martin Brattrud will contribute all designer royalties to The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens near Palm Springs, an organization Chase championed. “I am more deliberate than spontaneous in my design, but I think every room must have one touch of humor,” he once said. Monterey definitely puts a smile on our faces.

“Woven entirely from recycled plastic, it really does epitomize waste made wonderful”
SPACE 10-106A Quest is a continuation of the Grand Rapids, Michigan–based company’s efforts to create sustainable fabrics that are nonetheless supple and durable. The product is inspired by—and evokes—seaside landscapes. Designed by Jane Marks-Yewdall, the postconsumer-recycled polyester is available in 27 colorways, including ocean-blue Wave, canary-colored Sandstone, and light-gray Pebble. Each yard of Quest contains the equivalent of 23 plastic bottles. In addition, for each purchase the company donates to the Seaqual Initiative, an organization working to clean global oceans and raise awareness about marine plastic. Looking good and doing good, too.
Forces of Nature depicts the beautiful chaos that results when elements gather and collide to take command of the skies. Although it looks like a piece from a chess game played by giants, Bit is, in fact, an indoor/outdoor table (or stool or pedestal) that is ever at the ready for a vase of flowers, a novel, or an unexpected guest. Designer Simon Legald wanted to create something that satisfied not only functional needs but also psychological and aesthetic ones, too. He was inspired by monoliths and columns, transforming their clear-cut forms into something both bold and multipurpose. The 17-inch-tall piece is made entirely of low-density polyethylene industrial waste, and the pixelated coloration owes to small bits of the recycled materials. The multicolor grids that animate the circles of Centric give the illusion of motion across the fabric. Depending on the ground color, these spots take on different personalities: white gives a fresh midcentury-modern feel, navy and black lend Op Art dazzle, and ruby telegraphs a crafty needlework look. (The circles themselves are constructed from a kaleidoscope of hues within families of red, orange, blue, green, and more.) This Pan-Asian patisserie has a novel design conceit: The interior of the obviously 3D eatery looks like a 2D black-and-white comic (akin to the famous pencil-sketch-animation music video for A-ha’s “Take on Me”). The monochrome illusion was created by Vanessa Thanh Vu, 2d’s co-owner and designer, who for six months collaborated with a local artist on the hand-drawn life-size murals. It took Vu another two months to finish drawing on the furniture and flooring. The menu features delicious Phin-style coffee (a French press/drip hybrid that creates aromatic coffee with very low acidity), mochi donuts, and Asian-fusion fried chicken sandwiches. For selfies, hop inside the repurposed French clawfoot tub: You’ll look as if you came straight from the page of a Parisian storybook. 3155 N. Halsted Street; 773-360-8484.
Adalina [$$$] Helmed by Michelin-starred chef Soo Ahn, ritzy Adalina offers a taste of both Northern and Southern Italian fare, with a twist. Enjoy signature dishes such as lumache (Maine lobster with Calabrian chili peppers) or cacio e pepe arancini, a worldly riff on the classic Venetian dish made with forbidden black rice, Manchego cheese, and guanciale, aka Roman bacon. Just blocks from the Magnificent Mile shopping mecca, Adalina offers a luxurious yet comfy experience. On the first floor, the Rose Lounge bar has speakeasy vibes, while the dining room’s custom 500-pound Italian chandelier and antique mirrors lend a sparkling ambience. 912 N. Andros Taverna [$$] Contemporary Greek cuisine in stylish surrounds is the name of the game at this airy Logan Square taverna that offers indoor and outdoor dining plus takeout. Be transported to the Mediterranean—or more specifically, the southern Greek island of chef Doug Psaltis’s ancestors—via traditional cuisine lightened for a contemporary palette. Think spanakopita, octopus, lemony potatoes, prawn saganaki, hand-stretched wood-fired pita, and whole-grilled sea bass. 2542 N. Milwaukee Avenue; 773-365-1900.

Aikana [$$] This newcomer to Chicago’s storied Restaurant Row promises a multisensory experience, with plant-filled green-and-gold interiors (a vibe the owners describe as “jungle meets Versace”), and an ambient soundscape of tropical house music to complement the PanAmerican cuisine. Drop in for sharable plates like morcilla rellena (featuring roasted plantains with an Ecuadorian-inspired yapingacho sauce) or a signature dish by executive chef Alexander Quintero; we recommend churrascaria with peanut chimichurri, arepa, and chilera. In-house mixologist Benjamin Schiller merges Latin American and Mexican flavors in custom cocktails like the Nixtamal, a smokey blend of mezcal, bourbon, and corn. Beatnik on the River [$] This waterfront bar a seven-minute walk from the Mart has laid-back appeal, with a name that calls to mind the bohemian sixties. Its decor (with loads of outdoor space right on the river) and menu (by Marcos Campos, also of Porto) are a blend of Mediterranean influences that stretch from North Africa to the Middle East, and the funky music program mashes up reggae, Afrobeat, and French pop. Bronzeville Winery [$$] Newly opened in Southside Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, this Black-owned restaurant is sited in a mixed-use, mixed-income complex that fuses ground-floor hospitality with affordable housing. The stellar design by architecture studio Future Firm is sleekly industrial, with local designers featured prominently (see the whirling-dervish pendant lights by sculptor Lucy Slivinski). Artworks in the eatery rotate, as does the roster of performing musicians. The wine list highlights women-, minority-, and Black-owned labels, while executive chef Whitney McMorris’s menu presents contemporary American fare, from sweet potato ribbons with crème fraiche (for snacking) to New Zealand greenlipped mussels (for something more substantial). 4420 S. GoodFunk [$$] Adventurous sommeliers and quirky travelers alike should make a stop at GoodFunk, a natural wine bar perched in the historic 1912 Great Lakes Building overlooking the Chicago River (right next to Beatnik on the River). It was conceptualized by Maison Bonhomme, the creative branding studio behind other eateries in the Windy City—such as Porto and Fulton Market Kitchen—and has the sophistication of an old-world European café. GoodFunk’s wine director Colin Hofer offers organic and biodynamic menu options that aren’t even grape-based. Try a glass of Frukstereo from Sweden, made with apple, pear, honey, carrot, and sea buckthorn. As for food, the all-day menu of flatbreads and charcuteries incorporates pickling, smoking, and curing; everything has a bit of fermentation to match the wine. 180 N. Lýra [$$$] Rooted in the Mediterranean ethos of wellness, this new Greek restaurant is also spacious: It can seat 230 guests at full capacity plus 60 more on the covered outdoor patio. Chef Athinagoras Kostakos, who achieved fame as the winner of Greece’s version of Top Chef, delivers simple dishes bold in taste. A custom wood- and charcoal-burning hearth flavors treats such as grilled octopus with lemon vinaigrette and charred cippolini onion. For a heartier meal try the deconstructed pastisio (the Greek version of lasagna) with rich short rib ragu and black truffle bechamel. 905 W. Fulton Market; 312-660-7722.
