welcome to neocon! Welcome back to NeoCon in June! From innovative product launches from leading and emerging brands to inspirational programming and industry unifying events, the 53rd edition of NeoCon will once again serve as the commercial design industry’s leading platform and annual gathering place. This is an ideal moment to re-connect with each other, see and experience new products, discuss the power of design and the future of our shared spaces, and of course, celebrate. We thank our showrooms and exhibitors for their participation, our industry partners for their invaluable support, and Interior Design for publishing the official NeoCon Show Daily and Show Directory—essential tools for navigating the show. start the day right at the keynotes A highlight of every NeoCon is the keynote series, featuring notable cultural forces and thought leaders. This year’s lineup is sure to inspire and enlighten. Kicking things off on Monday is a conversation between genre-bending Chicago-based artist/activist Nick Cave—who synthesizes sculpture, installation, sound, performance, and film to address pressing societal issues related to race, gender, sexuality, and class—and his partner, Bob Faust, principal and creative director of Faust design studio. Moderated by IIDA’s Cheryl S. Durst, an Interior Design Hall of Famer, the presentation will cover the art of collaboration, the nature of hybrid practice, how Cave’s work engages the public sphere, and the pair’s new initiative, Facility, a multidisciplinary, multiuse collaboration space in the Windy City. On Tuesday, grab your coffee and take in a talk by designer/artist Bruce Mau, CEO and co-founder of Massive Change Network. The self-described “creative optimist,” innovator, and solver of complex problems has taken a sustainable, holistic, and life-centered design approach to his partnerships with global brands and heads of state. He is also the subject of a documentary, MAU, debuting this month. And wrapping up the series on Wednesday is futurist Shashi Caan, founding partner of SC Collective, who will be joined by Peter Exley, co-founder of Architecture is Fun and the 2021 AIA national president. Caan is a multicultural designer on the world stage, an educator, and an author focused on addressing societal challenges and meaningfully improving quality of life. On-site seating is limited; visitors must pre-register at neocon.com. Presentations will also be livestreamed online on the NeoCon Hub and on-site at the Grand Stair. See you there! MONDAY 11AM

We love products that allow personalization and interaction, and the playful Edit shelf by Giulia Pesce and Ruggero Bastita for Mizetto fits the bill. A groove runs along the length of the shelf to act as a support or to hold dividers, creating zones in which the user can tuck things or barriers between books and other objects. Oak veneer and powder-coated metal in a range of hues provides warmth and exciting color moments. In the Italian designers’ hands, a familiar product becomes something entirely novel. space 7-7094

In the HBF Textiles showroom, Crumpled Paper is not the result of writer’s block (as it is in the Show Daily offices), but rather the byproduct of invention. An enlightened woven fabric made from postconsumer-recycled polyester, it’s the company’s third Clean Impact Textiles pattern, containing a catalyst that makes it highly biodegradable. In the landfill, it will decompose roughly 91 percent in about 3 ½ years, compared to regular polyester, which would only decompose about 6 percent in that timespan. (It’s also bleach-cleanable without any added stain-resistant finish.) VP of design and development Mary Jo Miller’s creative process did involve the actual crumpling of paper—in an effort to produce a pattern with the optimal balance of shadow and light.

He’s also a dab hand at digital media and surface design. To wit, Chromalis, a heady exploration of visual depth and movement. The series was influenced by Bowers’s varied interests—art, gardening, thermodynamics. Among the choices is Borealis, the collection’s sole Type II vinyl wallcovering, its glowy gradients inspired by change (the only constant). Bowers programmed computer algorithms to generate intersecting line work for Phantom, a Supreen woven polyester upholstery inspired by moiré. Graffito, in the same fiber, references dual art traditions: spray-painted street art and Impressionist pointillism. Each mesmerizing offering comes in four rich colorways.

DINING GUIDE

dining guide You’ve covered a lot of ground at the Mart; now, where should you go to refuel? Try one of these recently opened restaurants. [$] Affordable. [$$] Moderate. [$$$] Expensive.

Adalina [$$$]

Helmed by Michelin-starred chef Soo Ahn, ritzy Adalina offers a taste of both Northern and Southern Italian fare, with a twist. Enjoy signature dishes such as lumache (Maine lobster with Calabrian chili peppers) or cacio e pepe arancini, a worldly riff on the classic Venetian dish made with forbidden black rice, Manchego cheese, and guanciale, aka Roman bacon. Just blocks from the Magnificent Mile shopping mecca, Adalina offers a luxurious yet comfy experience. On the first floor, the Rose Lounge bar has speakeasy vibes, while the dining room’s custom 500-pound Italian chandelier and antique mirrors lend a sparkling ambience. 912 N. State Street; 312-820-9000.

Aikana [$$] This newcomer to Chicago’s storied Restaurant Row promises a multisensory experience, with plantfilled green-and-gold interiors (a vibe the owners describe as “jungle meets Versace”), and an ambient soundscape of tropical house music to complement the Pan-American cuisine. Drop in for sharable plates like morcilla rellena (featuring roasted plantains with an Ecuadorian-inspired yapingacho sauce) or a signature dish by executive chef Alexander Quintero; we recommend churrascaria with peanut chimichurri, arepa, and chilera. In-house mixologist Benjamin Schiller merges Latin American and Mexican flavors in custom cocktails like the Nixtamal, a smokey blend of mezcal, bourbon, and corn. Dinner reservations start at 5PM, and the drinks keep flowing until 2AM. 652 W. Randolph Street; 312-291-9873.

Andros Taverna [$$] Contemporary Greek cuisine in stylish surrounds is the name of the game at this airy Logan Square taverna that offers indoor and outdoor dining plus takeout. Be transported to the Mediterranean—or more specifically, the southern Greek island of chef Doug Psaltis’s ancestors—via traditional cuisine lightened for a contemporary palette. Think spanakopita, octopus, lemony potatoes, prawn saganaki, hand-stretched wood-fired pita, and whole-grilled sea bass. 2542 N. Milwaukee Avenue; 773-365-1900.

2d [$] This Pan-Asian patisserie has a novel design conceit: The interior of the obviously 3D eatery looks like a 2D black-and-white comic (akin to the famous pencil-sketch-animation music video for A-ha's “Take on Me”). The monochrome illusion was created by Vanessa Thanh Vu, 2d’s co-owner and designer, who for six months collaborated with a local artist on the hand-drawn life-size murals. It took Vu another two months to finish drawing on the furniture and flooring. The menu features delicious Phin-style coffee (a French press/drip hybrid that creates aromatic coffee with very low acidity), mochi donuts, and Asian-fusion fried chicken sandwiches. For selfies, hop inside the repurposed French clawfoot tub: You’ll look as if you came straight from the page of a Parisian storybook. 3155 N. Halsted Street; 773-360-8484.

Beatnik on the River [$] This waterfront bar a seven-minute walk from the Mart has laid-back appeal, with a name that calls to mind the bohemian sixties. Its decor (with loads of outdoor space right on the river) and menu (by Marcos Campos, also of Porto) are a blend of Mediterranean influences that stretch from North Africa to the Middle East, and the funky music program mashes up reggae, Afrobeat, and French pop. On weekends, brunch includes mimosa bottle service. 180 N. Upper Wacker Drive; 312-526-3345.

Bronzeville Winery [$$] Newly opened in Southside Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, this Black-owned restaurant is sited in a mixed-use, mixed-income complex that fuses ground-floor hospitality with affordable housing. The stellar design by architecture studio Future Firm is sleekly industrial, with local designers featured prominently (see the whirling-dervish pendant lights by sculptor Lucy Slivinski). Artworks in the eatery rotate, as does the roster of performing musicians. The wine list highlights women-, minority-, and Black-owned labels, while executive chef Whitney McMorris’s menu presents contemporary American fare, from sweet potato ribbons with crème fraiche (for snacking) to New Zealand greenlipped mussels (for something more substantial). 4420 S. Cottage Grove Avenue; 872-244-7065.

GoodFunk [$$] Adventurous sommeliers and quirky travelers alike should make a stop at GoodFunk, a natural wine bar perched in the 1912 Great Lakes Building overlooking the Chicago River (right next to Beatnik on the River). It was conceptualized by Maison Bonhomme, the creative branding studio behind other eateries in the Windy City—such as Porto and Fulton Market Kitchen—and has the sophistication of an old-world European café. GoodFunk’s wine director Colin Hofer offers organic and biodynamic menu options that aren’t even grape-based. Try a glass of Frukstereo from Sweden, made with apple, pear, honey, carrot, and sea buckthorn. As for food, the all-day menu of flatbreads and charcuteries incorporates pickling, smoking, and curing; everything has a bit of fermentation to match the wine. 180 N. Upper Wacker Drive; 312-929-3185.

Lýra [$$$] Rooted in the Mediterranean ethos of wellness, this new Greek restaurant is also spacious: It can seat 230 guests at full capacity plus 60 more on the covered outdoor patio. Chef Athinagoras Kostakos, who achieved fame as the winner of Greece’s version of Top Chef, delivers simple dishes bold in taste. A custom wood- and charcoal-burning hearth flavors treats such as grilled octopus with lemon vinaigrette and charred cippolini onion. For a heartier meal try the deconstructed pastisio (the Greek version of lasagna) with rich short rib ragu and black truffle bechamel. 905 W. Fulton Market; 312-660-7722.

The attraction to Brentano’s NEW wallcovering line not only lies in its artistic pattern work but in the harmonious pairing of over 2,000+ textiles. The collections complement one another with sophisticated choices and standout introductions, creating a balanced synergy for designers with great versatility. "Forothermore" A career-spanning retrospective of Chicago-based artist Nick Cave is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago until October. Cave first came to prominence with his Soundsuits, head-to-toe suits made from an eclectic range of materials that were first made in response to the Rodney King beating. Soundsuits 9:29, part of this exhibition, similarly responds to the death of George Floyd. "Forothermore" also includes Cave’s recent sculptures of carved and cast-bronze limbs decorated with flowers, candles, and found objects such as used shotgun shells. Concomitantly, select works are also projected nightly on The Mart facade. 220 E. Chicago Ave; 312-280-2660.

Calling all Kahlo fans: Two exhibits about the uncompromising painter are on show at the National Museum of Mexican Art. The artist’s vast collection of more than 6,000 photographs, drawings, letters, and other personal memorabilia had largely been obscured from the public eye until 2009, when Mexican historian Pablo Ortiz Monasterio curated 241 photos from the elusive artist’s personal records for an exhibit, “Frida Kahlo, Her Photos.” Divided thematically into six sections, the exhibition debuted in Chicago this spring at NMMA; visitors can attend the showcase free of charge until August 7. A second exhibition, “Surrounding Kahlo: Works from the Permanent Collection,” at the same location through 2023, primarily explores the intriguing work of Kahlo’s students, known as “Los Fridos,” who learned from her while she convalesced at home in La Casa Azul. Go beyond the unibrow at 1852 W. 19th Street; 312-738-1503.

“Prince: The Immersive Experience”

The interactive exhibit curated by the Prince Estate and creative agency Superfly takes visitors on a tour of more than 10 spaces showcasing the singer’s musical eras. One room invites guests to step inside his Purple Rain album artwork and pose on his iconic motorcycle, while another simulates an audiovisual dance party created by Prince’s lighting designer, Roy Bennett. Also on display are relics of the artist’s storied career. Find the fun at the Shops at North Bridge at 540 N. Michigan Ave, from June 9 through October 9. Guests can reserve timed-entry tickets in advance through PrinceTheExperience.com.

"Igshaan Adams: Desire Lines" The Art Institute of Chicago is presenting the first major solo exhibition of weaving and sculpture artist Igshaan Adams’ work in the U.S. Running until August 1, the show will encompass more than 20 projects dating from 2014, plus a new large-scale installation created especially for the exhibition. The institute worked closely with the artist to develop the presentation around the concept of “desire lines,” a term to describe pathways worn in by pedestrians looking for a quicker route to their destination than the established paths. The works use the desire line as a metaphor, in which the artist explores life in his hometown of Bonteheuwel, South Africa, and the way he and others have forged their own paths through life outside the confines of their surroundings. 111 S. Michigan Ave; 312-443-3600.
