seating Swiss-born designer and Pin-Up Home CDO Ben Ganz is quite familiar with de Sede’s DS-2011; his parents had one in their living room when he was growing up. It’s a full-circle moment, then, that he had a hand in developing a special edition of the sofa, available in its original two-seater form plus an armchair and stool. The name, Harlequin, is fitting in the way the color-blocked leather upholstery suggests a court jester’s attire, but another key reference was Le Corbusier’s color experiments. With so much Swiss heritage, it only made sense to bring the collection out to the Alps for a photo shoot. fritz hansen In the 1950s, while he was designing the Sydney Opera House, Danish architect Jørn Utzon made a prototype of a small stool. More than 60 years later, Fritz Hansen has put it into production for the first time. Like his architecture, the 17-inch-high Utzon stool incorporates repetitive shapes drawn from nature. Their collectible objects and immersive installations explore space, color, and light, and the Radiance collection is no exception: It turns furniture into shimmering works of art. The limited-edition bench and square and rectangular coffee tables are made of textured colored glass (with timber substrate) in dark ruby, golden citrine, and pink citrine respectively; the surface reflects light and seems to move like rippling water. Despite their delicate effect, the pieces are highly functional: Rive Roshan contracts with a glass company that usually works on architectural projects. Forgive Gabriel Biselli, cofounder and director of young Brazilian studio Clube, if he gets a little brainy when describing Sauna System, his gym-inspired furniture collection. Since receiving his architecture degree in 2018, Biselli has taught at universities in São Paulo and studied the history of architecture and urbanism. Thus, the tubular anodized-aluminum ladder, shelf, side table, chair, and bench (with leather seat cushion) are more than the sum of their parts: “They’re objects that construct spaces,” Biselli says. Grouped together, they look like a workout room. Individually, they’re cool industrial pieces ideal for a loft or gallery. héctor esrawe Most of us never look twice at the piles of cardboard we have at home or stacked in the warehouse. It takes a creative mind like Héctor Esrawe’s to examine the geometry and repeating sequences of their honeycomb cells and use them as inspiration for functional sculptures: the eight-piece Gear series. The Mexican artist and furniture designer used the material to create models resembling layers of cardboard and then cast wax molds in bronze or aluminum (with aged, polished, or hand-rubbed patinas). The striking results are a world away from a UPS box. The 6-foot-wide coffee table evokes a stack of shiny gold coins, and the nearly 7-foot-tall Cartela floor light glows like a mythical treasure. At just 15 inches high, side tables II, III, and IV are no less arresting and emphasize the honeycomb’s texture. Ashley Botten opened her eponymous interior design studio in 2008 and has long created custom furniture for clients. In December, she introduced a collection of tables, seating, shelving, and accessories, making her pieces available to the public for the first time. Among them is Malibu, which pairs two flared metal podiums with four 3½-footlong shelves of Douglas fir or white oak. The 6-foot-tall unit is no wallflower: Its steel, brass, or copper podiums are treated with a special finish to create a mottled watercolor effect that stands out in any room. “I love how the fluidity of the watercolor contrasts with the solidity of metal,” Botten says. To create the Iris tables, Alejandra Gandía-Blasco took countless photographs of sunrises and sunsets in Spain, Portugal, and Germany. An artist as well as the creative and communication deputy director of her family’s company, Gandía-Blasco then distilled their colors into Pantone hues and developed 12 abstract designs that resemble mosaics or stained glass. The patterns, digitally printed using ceramic pigments on vitrified tempered glass, form the tops of powder-coated aluminum coffee, side, and dining tables. Iris comes in three shapes and color ranges—warm (orange/red), stormy (blue/green), and cool (black/white)—that capture the nuances of light at different times of day and in varied weather conditions. Suitable for outdoor use, the tables won’t fade when placed in the sun, but the colors will dapple beautifully onto the floor. gandiablasco.com

Sloping contours and soft geometries steal the spotlight in LucidiPevere’s latest design for Davis Furniture. Arcular is a modular lounge collection—comprised of a single-seat lounge chair, two-and three-seat sofas, and a range of ganging modular units—that embarks on a bold exploration of simple and compound curves. “We wanted to create a collection that not only embodies elegance and sophistication but also offers utmost comfort and versatility,” says LucidiPevere. “Arcular is the result of our fascination with curves and soft geometry, and we believe it will inspire designers to create dynamic and inviting spaces.” In their second collaboration with Davis Furniture, Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere— the masterminds behind the renowned Italian industrial design studio—bring their Milan-honed expertise to the forefront, synergizing with the US manufacturer’s decades-long legacy in the contract industry. 2

Constructed over a sturdy plywood and steel frame, the series is softened by tailored upholstery draped across plush foam for an elevated level of comfort. An integrated welt tactfully traces Arcular’s gentle bends and can be customized in matching or contrasting fabrics and leathers. Each upholstered unit adroitly sits on a sculptural cast aluminum base, blending commercial durability with a discerning sense of style that extends throughout the entire collection. A defining characteristic of the Arcular Collection is its broad design versatility. With modular units such as left and right-end units, straight connector units, and 45-degree and 90-degree corner units, designers have the flexibility to create various configurations. The unit’s base can be further customized with a selection of polished aluminum and standardized powdercoat colors, ensuring seamless integration into any design scheme. jomo tariku “Zagwe venerates the past and moves the dialogue of vernacular design forward”

Virginia-based artist and furniture maker Jomo Tariku grew up in Ethiopia and traveled throughout Africa as a child. His bold modern designs incorporate diverse references from the continent—hair combs, water jugs, antelope horns—and many have entered museum collections. In conceiving the Zagwe wardrobe, his first foray into case goods, Tariku looked to the Yemrehanna Kristos church in northern Ethiopia. Built around the 12th century during the Zagwe dynasty, the architectural marvel was constructed of alternating layers of stone and wood. The wardrobe emulates that striped look in American walnut and bleached ash veneer. dinesen Back in 1992, when he designed his London residence, the acclaimed British architect John Pawson specified 45 cm-wide floorboards from Thomas Dinesen, head of his family’s handcrafted-wood flooring company. Dinesen then created a custom dining table from the same planks, so that it appeared to rise directly from the floor. Impressed by the commission, Pawson forged a friendship and business partnership with Dinesen (who in 2021 handed the reins of the Denmark-based brand to son Hans Peter), specifying his planks in seminal projects such as the Design Museum in London. The Pawson Furniture Collection speaks to this heritage, with new iterations of the pared-back Douglas fir pieces forged for the architect’s home 30-odd years ago—all based on the floorboard span. There’s the Dining Series, encompassing bench, stool, and table, the latter now with a slender oak strip inset between the two boards comprising its top (rather than the shadow gap of the original). There’s also the Lounge collection, its chair, sofa, and daybed customizable with upholstery from another Danish heavyweight: Kvadrat. dinesen.com

Working as a jewelry maker in Budapest, architect and metalsmith Eva Anna Gulacsi dreamt of creating something for the home. “In a world of mass production, I find great value in the imperfect beauty of handmade things,” she says. Her first collection—called Pinch—consists of door handles, wall hooks, and knobs first conceived in clay, then sand-cast in solid brass or bronze. The sinuous shapes were inspired by human touch, the organic textures meant to stimulate our senses when using them. Many years in the making, the Stone Textures line pairs high-performance acoustic material with organic veining. The three patterns—Marble, Travertine, and Granite—highlight but don’t copycat the characteristics of the stones for which they’re named. An algorithm was used to create a uniquely natural pattern for each texture, offered on 9 mmthick PET felt encompassing 60 percent recycled content. The manufacturer took special care to ensure the digitally printed water-based, UV-cured ink doesn’t overpower the heathered look of the material. Turf also developed two new products that support book-matching and continuous texture across multiple panels, similar to what one might do with real stone. olivari BAU, a reference to the Bauhaus movement that inspired it, utilizes leftover chippings of marble from the Henraux quarry in Carrara—incidentally, the same one Michelangelo used to envision his sculptures. Design Studio Niruk combined these elegant leftovers with drawn brass to create an expressive door handle with a strong geometric shape. The concept was kickstarted when designers Nina Ruthe and David Antonin participated in an earlier project combining porcelain and brass; they later experimented with a variety of materials before landing on the idea of using marble. The grip’s streamlined shape allows many to be drilled out of each marble block; the door and window handles are then cut, polished, and attached to the metal (available in nine alloys) via a special adhesive.
