sancal Born in 1973 as a small upholstery workshop based at a Spanish almond orchard, the company grew up to become a benchmark of international contemporary design. This year, Sancal celebrates its big 5-0 by introducing a commemorative fabric, Fiesta, developed with Dutch brand Byborre. The knitted mélange-effect textile, sustainably produced in an orange colorway meant to express enthusiasm, is covered in a collage of retro graphics that incorporates the “smiley face” of Sancal’s logo. It looks especially fetching on the new iteration of Studiopepe’s Link sofa, with removable covers (one per link); Sylvain Willenz’s Totem stool and molded-plywood Body chair, a version of which comes upholstered top to toe; and Luca Nichetto’s modular seating system, Next Stop. “Nawabari’s informality is characteristic of BIG’s disruptive approach”
boconcept Taking its cue from the Japanese art of binding objects with rope, the Nawabari collection was designed with shared spaces in mind. The modular seating group is the byproduct of a new collaboration with global architecture office BIG–Bjarke Ingels Group. The forms indeed look as if cinched around their midsections, creating both a pleasing plumpness and a sense of formal rigor and rhythm. “Sculptural organic shapes are the core of this furniture family,” firm partner Jakob Lange explains. The series encompasses two sofas, an armchair, two coffee tables, and two poufs—all meant to be combined and moved around to help bring people together. Solid-wood furniture conveys a certain heft—telegraphing a quality (if we’re being anthropomorphic about it) that the pieces are rather sure of themselves. This Istanbul-based interdisciplinary studio led by Yinka Ilori teases out that confidence with Oblong, a 10-piece collection that comprises coffee, dining, and side tables, a stool, and a console. To compose the chunky round-cornered stools, which are at once sculptural and functional, the designer, who has a fashion background, used burnt oak and maple burl, the latter with a patterned finish that speaks to the beauty of the material. The interior designer recently cut the ribbon on his first-ever showroom, in Paris’s Marais district. Yovanovitch designed the 2,690-square-foot gallery as a homelike environment in which his made-to-order furniture pieces mingle easily with vintage lighting and contemporary artwork. To mark the opening, the French designer tapped artist Claire Tabouret, a longtime friend, to create a limited-edition series of his iconic Asymmetry chair— which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. “It is a reflection of our friendship and creative synergy,” Yovanovitch says of the collaboration. “The richness of Claire’s work and the theme of childhood bring transience, poetry, color, and movement to an otherwise geometric, almost rocklike form.” Tabouret hand-painted kids’ faces and other details on a series of the artisanmade chairs, the wool upholstery decorated with streaming satin kites. The primary module is a single perch with a backrest and an optional attached side table, perfect for laptop work (or sipping Lambrusco). The eco-friendly, clay-coated wallpaper tells a story of “unhurried time, ease, and tranquility,” she says, evoking a dance between water and object. rosemary hallgarten Textile designer Rosemary Hallgarten was born in the U.K. and works out of her company’s Connecticut headquarters, but her two recent collections turn to sunnier Mediterranean climes. In Aegean, textural neutrals, cerulean shades, and indoor/ outdoor upholsteries conjure visions of the Greek coastline. The open weave of Fisher, a linen-blend drapery, references fishing nets, while the delicate Micro Bouclé, a luxurious blend of baby alpaca and merino wool, evokes breezy afternoons. The year-old Polish furniture brand grew out of a hunt for a mirror. Founder Patrycja Bruz ́-Soniewicka, a former marketing director, had an image of one in mind but couldn’t find it anywhere. She started sketching, and Hogai (Pashto for “special girl”) was born. The curved, full-length mirror that Bruz ́-Soniewicka envisioned, dubbed Artist, is one of four bold looking glasses that comprise the company’s first collection. The hefty wall and standing mirrors—which weigh up to 165 pounds—take inspiration from Bauhaus functionalism, Memphis Group energy, and the vibrant palettes of Pedro Almodóvar films. The 6 ½-foot-tall Cellist is the most whimsical of the bunch, with a round glass at the top of its oblong powder-coated-steel frame. Architect and interior designer Crina Arghirescu Rogard has long worked with craftsmen and artists to create custom furniture for clients’ homes. This fall, she brings pieces to market for the first time. Among her stable of trusted collaborators is Liz Hopkins, an artist and furniture designer based in upstate New York. Together, the pair conceived the sculptural Nuage desk and Ode to Brutalism book towers. The latter, resembling cinder blocks, are made of wood offcuts mixed with plaster, while the petite desk has a visible plywood-and-fiberglass structure; both are finished with polished resin. French ceramicist Fabienne L’Hostis made the Raku coffee table, whose ceramic top sits on a hammered blackened-brass base, while French cabinetmaker Maison Chabot crafted the slim Studette, a steel and lacquered-wood desk and wardrobe. OMA requested a pink-onyx-clad elevator for Fondazione Prada in Milan; Sabine Marcelis created travertineand-glass chairs. Yet as business has grown, so has its inventory of offcuts. The company asked Budde, a design studio in Cologne, Germany, to explore their potential. Founders Johannes Budde and Meike Papenfuss conceived Five x Seven: five tables (a console plus coffee and side tables) made from seven types of stone. For each piece, they combined slabs of marble, onyx, granite, and travertine, then carved a slim arch into all four sides. Layered together like sedimentary rock, the colorful stones form muted stripes of cream, pink, green, and gray, and look different from every angle. Secret Gardens is a case in point, with its riotous hues and cartoonishly cool motifs. The production process emphasizes the hand: Mannino sketched out the patterns on paper before digitizing them with the help of Procreate, and the carpets are also woven entirely a mano. Outlined leaves combine with rows of bricks in Secret Garden; leaves reappear with planks of wood in Rose Realm; and wood combines with a stylized waterway in Sapphire Streams. She describes her work as reveling in the juxtaposition of elegance and chaos. That sums up the process for Leeway—as well as the result. The cement tiles are made by a team of artisans in Mexico working from the designer’s sketches, but with “leeway” to improvise as they pour colors directly onto the cement base. “I was pleasantly surprised that the finished tiles are more beautiful than my drawings,” Thatcher notes. The 8-inch-square modules, made with natural pigments and marble powder, come in two colorways: warm mélange and cool mélange. erik lindström The rug company’s recently unveiled New York showroom is the kind of place that’s fun to get lost in. Designed by interiors maven Anna Beeber, the 4,000-square-foot Flatiron space displays floor coverings in a series of 1970s-inflected environments—residentially styled vignettes that thematically combine eras and locales. Visitors are greeted at a vintage Paul Evans desk illuminated by salvaged Paris streetlamps and anchored by Anesi, a labyrinthine charcoal-toned wool stunner; in another setting, the handtufted Arcade rug forms a stage for a pair of De Sede sofas, facing off beside Karl Springer poufs. In-stock designs currently on view include Conversation, a playful composition of grayscale shapes set against a neutral background. Tucked into the back of the showroom is a sample library, with wares displayed in custom walnut millwork. beni rugs The rug maker’s latest collection was inspired by a home in the Los Angeles hills that was once an enclave for psychedelic experimentation and sun worship. The Flamingo Estate series is a collaboration between Beni’s cofounders, Robert Wright and Tiberio Lobo-Navia, and estate owner Richard Christiansen, who runs a rarified home-goods brand of the same name. The 13 floor-covering designs derive from decorative elements found throughout the property, which was built in the 1940s and more recently glamified by Studio KO. Motifs riff on brickwork, garden flora, and even leopard-spot upholstery. Cactus Pool channels a lapis-lined water feature in the garden; Breakfast Table interprets a stripedwood dining hub; Bathhouse Reflection evokes light cast from blue stained-glass windows; and Pavilion Tiles is a nod to the graphic kitchen counter. cassina Proof that the simplest forms can be the most striking: Eitie, inspired by a wallmounted lighting installation Tobia Scarpa recently designed for Ca’ Scarpa in Treviso, Italy, a centuries-old church he restored for use by the Benetton Foundation Research Centre. Cassina leveraged that original design as a starting point to produce a full series that includes the original wall version as well as a pendant light and table and floor lamps. (Eitie is part of the brand’s first-ever lighting collection.) Employing hidden technology, the joints on the table and floor lamps can be opened 30 degrees to create different light effects. Each luminous aluminum element can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing users to adjust the glow’s position and brightness. The queer-owned New York company recently relocated from Brooklyn to a 3,000-square-foot studio in the Catskills— a move that allows for future expansion—and Loon marks the first series designed and built entirely in-house, from conception to production (the latter under the aegis of fabrication head Miranda Wagner). Owl wings, leaves, and dried seeds inspired company founder John Sorensen-Jolink’s early sketches. Those studies and drawings evolved into elemental sconces, pendants, and chandeliers produced by a local metal forge, marking a new place-driven aesthetic for the brand. The collection comprises eight fixtures divided into two product families: Foundry and Ridge. The former employs the traditional sand-casting technique and evokes trumpet flowers; the latter is characterized by curved, leaflike forms that call to mind a bird’s outstretched wings. So, it’s only appropriate that delectable pastries were the inspiration for Patisserie, a collection conceived by Bodin Hon and Dilara Kan Hon of Studio Yellowdot. The design duo, based in Hong Kong and Turkey, paid a visit to tile manufacturer Orhan Gorbon’s Istanbul workshop, where they were mesmerized by the production process…and reminded of a pastry kitchen. The playful shapes and pastel hues of donuts, eclairs, and biscuits became innovative dry-pressed ceramic tiles that bring sugary energy to actual kitchens worldwide. The threedimensional tiles are handmade from pigmented and glazed clay—but look good enough to eat.

architectural products After researching the conventional paint industry, Price Latimer and Maya Crowne realized there was much to be done to make the product better for people and the environment. So began Alkemis Paint, distinguished by its allnatural mineral foundation and artistquality crystalline pigment. Made without solvents, plasticizers, preservatives, biocides, synthetic pigments, or chemical colorants, the so-called “architectural wellness” paints—launched during NYCxDesign week at R & Company gallery alongside zeitgeisty furnishings— have a pleasant gritty-matte texture that result from the unique binder, made from clear quartz plus minerals from the Earth’s crust. “Think of it as crushed-up crystals and rocks to adorn your walls,” Latimer enthuses. Using clear quartz means the pigments are essentially embedded in glass, allowing the colors to shine through with unrivaled luminosity and light reflectivity (the synthetic binders of typical paints tend to cloud hues). But it’s also an exercise in holistic wellbeing. “Crystals and minerals have been used in therapeutic modalities since ancient times to attune energetic alignment and foster balance,” Crowne notes. To that end, the paints also incorporate goethite, believed to promote meditation; chromite, to ground emotions; and hematite, which absorbs negative energy.

Designed by brand cofounders Francesco Manfredi and Tommaso Lorenzini, its key piece is Kylíndo, a low-slung tubular outdoor armchair topped with waterrepellent cylindrical bolster cushions. minotti Isole means “islands” in Italian, and it’s easy to see why Gordon Guillaumier chose it as the name for his playful 1950s-inspired lava stone coffee tables. Each irregular, organic-shape top is inset with a concentric circle of colored glass dust, creating an effect that evokes a land mass popping out of the ocean. Perching on polished pewter-finish stainless-steel legs, Isole comes in four earth-tone colorways (celadon, green, cappuccino, and rust) and four sizes, each standing at a slightly different height to allow a layered, nesting effect when arranged together.
