bohinc studio Designer Lara Bohinc’s Afternoon Tea collection celebrates the joyful and indulgent moments of the eponymous ritual. Her Trevor dining chair is pared down to essential elements—a clever assemblage of powder-coated steel rods and upholstered spheres that form the back- and (optional) armrests. The 34-inch-high chair is charmingly facelike but also has the look of a colorful brooch. That’s not surprising: Bohinc studied industrial design in Slovenia and metalwork/ jewelry at Royal College of Art in London, and has served as a design consultant to Montblanc, Gucci, Cartier, and other brands. Designer Ronan Bouroullec, who hatched Filo with brother Erwan, says their idea for the chair started with the structure, and then the lines were filled in later. It’s a graphic—almost typographical—design, especially when viewed from the side, an angle that emphasizes the repeating lines of fabric cord wrapped around the solid-beech frame. The shape was conceived to reduce wood waste, and it took many iterations to maximize the seat’s strength (the designers were aiming for a certain structural delicacy that proved to be a challenge).

The squareness of the form represents a new vocabulary for the duo. But Ronan says he uses Filo every day as his desk chair—a strong endorsement indeed. mattiazzi.eu

From Low-Carb to No-Carb: Swurve by Keilhauer Design activism is nothing new for Keilhauer, the Toronto manufacturer that for 40 years has conceived sustainable solutions for the contract furniture sector. But for true pioneers, the chase never ceases.

And so, inspired by the Architecture 2030 Challenge to reduce embodied carbon, the Keilhauer Design for Environment team enlisted the aid of veteran Canadian designer Andrew Jones to raise the ecological bar. Their resolve materialized in Swurve, a new conference chair with swooping arms that change thickness as they twist away from the body. “Soft, round shapes not only feel great, but they also connect with people on an emotional level,” says Jones.

But the chair boasts bragging rights beyond the sleek five-star base, in aluminum or nylon, or tensed mesh back, in 22 colors. Swurve is the first Keilhauer product to be completely carbon-neutral.

How’d they do it? Recycled aluminum, steel, and nylon were used. Emissions from transportation were reduced. Renewable Energy Certificates cover all electricity used in Keilhauer facilities. Finally, Swurve is designed for optimal durability, backed by a 10-year warranty, with repairable and replaceable components that extend its lifespan. The result? Total carbon dioxide equivalents of 116kg, minus carbon offsets of 116kg, equals 0.

“We’re excited to reach this milestone in our own efforts while supporting clients pursuing sustainability builds,” says Keilhauer president Mike Keilhauer. “Swurve proved that great design and sustainability go hand in hand.”

Lightweight and dynamic, the chair is easily moved, allowing physical distancing when desired, and collaboration when required. Ergonomics are served by the lumbar support created by the tension of the mesh, along with Keilhauer’s patented synchro-tilt mechanism.

Certified SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and BIFMA LEVEL 1, Swurve already snagged honors at Red Dot, Good Design, NYCxDesign, Metropolis’s Planet Positive Award, and Interior Design’s HiP awards. But then, Keilhauer always knew they had a winner.

tortuga The online design emporium ventures beyond producing its own housewares with the launch of Tuga, a curated marketplace that complements the company’s original collections with a small portfolio of home goods sourced from around the globe.

“We’ve set the foundations for our brand’s designs and values,” founder Andrea Hill notes, “so we can now fill in the gaps with artisanal pieces we’ve long admired.” Makers include Mantas Cornejo, a family-run knitwear workshop in Spain, which is reissuing Oporto, a graphic merino-wool blanket, especially for the launch. The classic pattern of orange and white triangles is inspired by Portuguese tilework.

Each section of the blanket is knitted, washed, and dried flat before being assembled and finished by hand, resulting in a soft yet weighty textile. The workshop has also created a striking new blanket, Cuardricula, its blue-and-white grid pattern based on a page from a graphpaper notebook complete with a red header line and binder-ring “holes.” tortugaliving.com

In her namesake contract upholstery collection—her first—for the Californiabased manufacturer, Gaca transforms recycled cotton, post-consumer polyester, and nylon into a quartet of highperformance, three-dimensional textiles featuring quilted, pillowy surfaces. Bloko spreads a linear, threecolor gradient over a 39-inch span of small, puffy rectangles; Ronda’s cushioned circular pockets create a modern honeycomb design; Rombu has a rippling surface of elevated diamond shapes, enhanced with contrasting colors; and Mirko features a handsome texture made of thick, recycled cotton yarns in three interwoven colors. After more than a century making furniture, the Italian manufacturer has teamed up with textile mill Torri Lana to produce Timènt, its first exclusive fabric collection. For inspiration, creative director Cristina Celestino looked to Northern Italy’s Tagliamento, a braided river famed for its ecologically intact floodplain. She uses texture and color to reproduce the pristine watershed’s network of intertwined channels in two natural-yarn fabrics: Greto, which renders the abstracted pattern in wool, and Golena, an organic cotton

Greto is offered in eight variants, in some of which weft and warp play tone on tone, with loops and waves as compelling to the touch as to the eye, while in others the weave contrasts decisively with the warp. furniture dirty hands Founded in 2019 by Karen Yuzbashyan and Elisabeth Martirosyan, this beguilingly monikered Moscow art/ceramics studio specializes in both murals and products. Among the latter is Vertebra, a coat rack created in collaboration with the Russian designer Igor Kurkin. The ceramic form is decidedly a spine—specifically that of a whale, whose extinction-facing plight is alluded to by the dark-bronze-glazed vertebra accenting others of natural chamotte clay. “It’s like a flaw in a perfect ridge,” notes Martirosyan. nilufar Bethan Laura Wood’s latest collection, like much of her work to date, focuses on the boudoir (and the objects found there) as well as the dialectic between nature and the manmade. Meisen also introduces some new themes and fixations to her repertoire, from entomology to East Asian cabinetry—a potpourri of influences that results in visual exuberance and uniqueness. The series began life as an investigation into handles, which became jewelry in Wood’s hands. The beguiling front patterns of the short and tall cabinets derive from both the wood grain itself as well as meisen kimono fabric and the ikat weaving process used to produce its unique feathered coloration. Heard of eelgrass? David Thulstrup, the Copenhagen-based designer and architect, discovered the underwater plant’s long-recognized virtues when visiting the island of Læsø, about 12 miles northeast of the Jutland peninsula. There, the natural and sustainable substance has been used for thatched roofs of houses since the 17th century. Søuld, meanwhile, has spent the past decade researching eelgrass, and is the first to convert it into a CO2-storing, acoustic building material. Drawing upon these and other environmentally friendly attributes, Thulstrup created the brand’s first furniture collection. A Deep Dive Into “Lounge”

An examination of the modern lounge led Davis Furniture to three new solutions.

Imagine the speculation as two bold-face design teams, marshalled into action by contract seating specialist Davis Furniture, reexamined the nebulous concept of “lounge”—a label broadly applied to anything from a single-seat ottoman to a 20-foot sofa.

Longtime design allies Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub, collectively known as jehs+laub, and first-time Davis collaborator Sebastian Herkner, embarked upon their investigations by effectively reshuffling the creative process, opting to first identify and engage with the unique needs of specific spaces, then conceive seating for those environments.

Working in tandem with the manufacturer’s product development team, the two design groups envisioned chairs engineered for comfort, whether the user is relaxing or working, a reflection of the new workday normal, which rarely comes to a tidy conclusion.

Their dialogues ultimately spawned three new solutions for unique lounge applications.

Sebastian Herkner targets the need for mobility and flexibility in lobbies and collaborative zones with Tote, a light-scale mobile chair. The fully upholstered profile promises ease of movement and adaptability, while a handy leather handle allows Tote to be quickly relocated for impromptu confabs.

Jehs+laub pondered open-plan workplaces, and the contradictory needs for isolation and communication, and responded with Quad, a high-back chair meant for maximum flexibility. With geometric lines softened by sloping curves, Quad can define or divide space, depending on the arrangement: inward for groups, outward for individuals.

Shifting focus toward lobbies and other public areas, jehs+laub returned to their Sachet Collection—a wildly successful series of chairs and stools first introduced in 2017—and built upon its popularity with Sachet Lounge. The chair’s tailored upholstery and multiple base options bring a light-scale residential feel to the workspace while providing optimal comfort.

Born in Sicily, Vincenzo left at age 18 to study fashion in Rome, and at 21 was hired by Fendi, where he is now head designer of leather goods. (He also launched his own label in 2009.) For this collaboration, Vincenzo translated Lurex textiles into a shimmering striped rug, the metallic yarn being new material for the brand’s artisans, who usually work with Tibetan wool. A handloom technique, native to India, was chosen instead of the more common hand knotting. Designed by DittoHouse founder Molly Fitzpatrick, the Hand rugs are executed on a very early form of weaving technology: the backstrap loom. As the name suggests, the weaver sits with a strap around her back that provides the tension for the loom; finished products can only be as wide as the weaver can physically pass the weft thread back and forth.
