Impact Report 2021

Dear Friends of ICS,

Mike Lange, Chair Rhonda Fure, Vice Chair Nicole Maneval, Treasurer

Periods of transition can be a rich time of discovery and understanding. This past year has certainly highlighted that. We learned and adapted quickly in an effort to serve more people in a deeper way. Interfaith Community Services (ICS) maintained a sharp focus on the need in our community and eliminated many of the barriers preventing people in need from accessing support. Ed Jenkins (Board Emeritus), who passed away this past year, always asked, “what is best for the client?” This was our central guiding principal in deciding to help seniors get vaccinated, partnering with multiple agencies to secure additional COVID financial assistance, adding mobile meal routes, allowing more than one visit a month to the foodbank, and increasing the number of rides given to clients. In the past year everyone has lost something. We’ve lost loved ones, daily activities once taken for granted, as well as our sense of security. Then there are those we serve, who started with less and have lost so much more. Combined with the support of our donors, the community, and governmental agencies, our ICS family worked tirelessly for these clients. And we could not be prouder of what we have accomplished together this year. As this period of transition continues to unfold, we must continue to bring our services to people in need, wrap our services around them, and at the same time, lead others to do the same. We will use what we have learned during this period of transition continue to harness the power of the ICS community.

The Emergency Assistance

programs at Interfaith Community Services (ICS) are designed to help people who are facing difficult circumstances that prevent them from meeting basic needs. Often people need just a little help to make it through tough times. The COVID pandemic caused an increase in need that rippled throughout our community. Thanks to partnerships with community and government organizations like Community Investment Corporation, the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, the Jewish Community Foundation, United Way and Wildfire, ICS was able to quickly mobilize and distribute more aid to families in need than ever before. Families face the difficult choice between feeding their families or paying their bills. ICS is an affiliated pantry partner of the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona, the source of our monthly food bags. Generous donations and mobilized faith community partners ensure that we have enough food to meet the demand in our food banks. Our larger aim is to remove barriers to selfsufficiency. At times, this is a seemingly small thing which makes a large impact. ICS helps people move forward by assisting with securing identification or help with transportation so people can get to work. 6

We distributed 188% more aid to families in need.

We helped 868 households avoid homelessness.

We helped bridge the gap for more than 1,400 families by paying their utility bills.

“Interfaith community services has worked hands on with my family to provide the support we needed, when we needed it the most. This has meant the difference between homeless and homed for the past 12 months. .” -Samantha

independently. When mobility becomes an issue, whether through aging or disability, ICS Volunteers provide a caring community offering additional supports. Issues of isolation worsened during the pandemic. The deeper impact of ICS caregiving services addresses the isolation people feel when they become homebound. Reaching out personally through phoning and friendly visiting Volunteers traveled over 100,000 miles programs offer another layer of support for transporting clients to where they needed to those unable to get out and about or who be, and helping to alleviate isolation. may not have family close-by. Beyond just delivering food, or providing a ride to an appointment, caregiving services offer an opportunity for homebound clients to visit Volunteers made almost 1000 calls offering and connect with caregiving volunteers.

Volunteers provided over a 100 seniors rides to get their COVID Vaccine. 8

"I want you to know how grateful I am to each of you for delivering meals to me once a week. I had surgery recently and have not had the energy to prepare food for myself nor any interest in eating. Having these meals available to pop in the microwave has meant that I’ve eaten regularly and it has relieved so much stress. I’ve been able to rest and I know that they are helping me heal. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!” – Diane

95% of participating Single Mom Scholars graduate from the program.

For many families in need, the cost of high quality, early childhood education, enrichment programs or even basic school supplies are out of reach.

Arizona is among the most expensive states for relative burden of childcare costs, ranking 39th in the country.3 3Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona 2018 Research Brief

from crisis Transition people to stability

programs link together to offer more than short-term help; we work with clients to build long-range solutions that promote selfsufficiency. Sometimes working individuals and their families find themselves in a cycle of chronic need. Our Workforce Development programs disrupt these cycles by supporting job seekers and helping people get better employment. To combat poverty, ICS offers a series of workshops: Getting Ahead, Bridges Financial Management, and RESET. These workshops take place over either a series of weeks or months, depending on the program, and help participants identify and overcome barriers to stability while providing them with the tools to succeed on their own. As part of the continuum of our self-sufficiency programs, Single Mom Scholars (SMS) focuses on improving the economic well-being of single moms and their children. This comprehensive scholarship program empowers low-income mothers to earn a college degree, compete in the marketplace, and lift their families out of poverty. ICS also helps ease the path to independence by offering wrap-around support through programs like YES - Youth Enrichment Support. YES offers funding for qualified clients to help pay for things like: school supplies, tutoring, sports programs, child care, instrument rental and other enrichment opportunities. 11

Provide Supports

that limit isolation, encourage self-sufficiency and promote mental health.

Community Health Outreach

ICS focuses on as part of our aim to cultivate healthy communities and limit isolation. We offer a suite of learning opportunities that address difficult subjects like end of life and mental health. Mental Health First Aid - addresses the stigma around mental health and provides training to give initial help to adults experiencing mental health challenges. Honoring Our Lives - prepares people of all life stages and cultures for transitioning through and their departure from this life with advance care planning. Compassionate Care with Healthy Boundaries - teaches individuals how to give care while setting secure healthy boundaries. Compassion Fatigue – Caring on Empty - reminds us to take care of ourselves when we are responsible for the care of others. Depression & Anxiety in the Elderly - identifies the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety that may be exhibited in the elderly.

“I think this was an eye-opener to all of us. It showed us what it will feel like to be a mental health first aider in a real time situation. This can expose the peer supporter to areas that trigger ones’ emotional well being. I believe this is a vital test for supporters to know where self-care will be of great importance.” -MHFA participant

collaboration with and for faith communities.

Faith communities are the foundation of Interfaith Community Services (ICS). ICS was formed on the idea that people of diverse faith traditions could unite with one common purpose – to help people in need. This network has grown to over 120 diverse faith communities throughout Pima County. In response to pandemic challenges, the support of our faith partners became vital as they swiftly mobilized to get services to those with limited access. We are grateful to our faith community partners for joining us in service to improve the lives of so many.

volunteers in meaningful, compassionate connections.

Caring Volunteers

are the very heart of Interfaith Community Services (ICS). Since our early days 35 years ago, our volunteer program has grown exponentially. What started out as just a handful of volunteers has grown into a corps of dedicated, engaged volunteers numbering nearly 2,000. As we move forward, our volunteer program re-frames the impact of volunteers. It is more than services delivered, it is transformational relationships built by our volunteers.

We honor members of the Legacy Society who are helping sustain the mission of ICS today and for future generations, while inspiring others to do the same.

ICS mourned the loss of longtime champion, Ed Jenkins this year. For over 17 years, Jenkins was the kind of volunteer every organization dreams of: committed to the mission, an intellectual thoughtpartner, contributor, ambassador and a passionate volunteer. His impact on ICS and the Tucson community is immeasurable. He was a tireless advocate for those less fortunate in our community and an inspiration to all.
