BY SHONDA MAYES Finding the power to keep going when it feels like life is lifin’ isn’t easy. If we’re honest, trying to keep going despite being knocked down can be downright exhausting. The reality is that some of us are just going through the motions, surviving and living to see another day. And if we’re being real, seeing another day is a huge blessing not to be taken for granted in the time we live in.

So, I don’t want to downplay that, but it’s going through the motions of life and never getting to the place of

success that we see for ourselves that can be heavy at times. Existing and not living because we’re trying to brace ourselves for the next blow life might bring our way. We put our dreams in our rearview mirror and forget what we’re passionate about to become the heroes our families, friends, and anyone else close to us need.

A lot of pressure can come with just trying to make it in this crazy world and take care of those around us.

Overwhelming pressure can

sometimes leave us wanting to give up and throw in the towel on everything.

We all face trials, and if I’m being honest, I have gone through things that have made me want to give up and forget it all. I’ve faced betrayal, heartbreak, being let down by others, and so much more. I’m not unlike many of you who have been dealt similar cards. At times, I didn’t understand why I got the short end of the stick when I gave so much or tried so hard. I’ve come to realize that there is purpose in everything that happens to us. It’s all in how we look at it.

The pressing and the pressure come to refine us. The hurt, the anger, the pain, the hard times all serve a purpose. We must ask ourselves what lesson we are supposed to get from our trials. Is it not to be so trusting of people and their intentions? Is it to show us who’s for and against us? Has the pressure and pressing come to remind us of those dreams we’ve let go of? Maybe even some of our trials aren’t just for us. As cliché as it may sound, some things we go through are so we can reach back and help someone who finds themselves in a place we once were. I guarantee you that the pressure and the pressing we face in life don’t come to make us give up. It comes to make us better. It comes to stretch us and grow us. We must shift our perspective to see what good we can get from what seems like a bad situation.

So, when life hits hard, don’t sit down.

AUTHOR AA LEWIS WHO’S DOWN WITH B.R.A.E? YEAH, YOU KNOW ME!

Once you learn more about BRAE, we know you’ll be “down” for it, too. In short, BRAE stands for Black Reader’s Appreciation Event, but it is far greater than that. Founded in 2022

by Author A.A. Lewis, what started as an enjoyable means to give back to her readers transformed into a global connectedness between the writing

community and readers.

A.A. desired to celebrate National Authors’ Day by giving back to her loyal readers and made the decision to be inclusive of other authors who may be willing to do the same. The rest—as they say—is history The Black Reader’s Appreciation Event is dedicated to celebrating the

rich tapestry of Black literature and the profound impact it has on individuals and communities worldwide. Their mission is to foster a space of inclusivity, respect, and understanding where the diverse voices and perspectives within Black literature are honored and amplified.

The purpose of BRAE is to give back to readers and to increase readership and visibility for authors by taking advantage of Kindle Unlimited’s Free Promotion days. Authors submit their choice of books (up to four) to be listed on the BRAE website that they are willing to offer free of charge. For five days, November 1st through November 5th, in tandem with National Authors’ Day, the authors’ books will be listed for free via Amazon for readers to download in a wide array of genres. This year, authors were able to incorporate their own platforms to offer free books, further enhancing engagement and followership with readers from around the globe.

This year’s event hosted Black authors from Canada, the United Kingdom, and the USA. There was also a significant focus on Black male author representation, which added to the inclusion and diversity of the event and showcased their respective genres. With over 250 Black authors representing genres across the literary spectrum, the second annual BRAE celebration was a booming success, lending to a bright and promising future. To date, the website has had a record-breaking 100K visitors during the fiveday celebration, with well over 60K eBook downloads.

A.A. states, “With the full support of social media, the participating authors, book bloggers, and, of course, the readers, the 2023 BRAE celebration exceeded any expectation I entertained.”

Author A.A. Lewis is a promising rising star in the Urban Literature world. Her “Sophicarachette” writing style allows her to pen characters and stories that resonate with readers. Her ability to deliver the unexpected has earned her a bestselling title several times on Amazon. With realistic stories of urban life, it’s no wonder why A.A. You relocated from Southwest Philadelphia to Camden, New Jersey, at a young age. How have these diverse environments influenced your writing, particularly in "The End Justifies the Means"?

Southwest and Camden are very similar. Both are inner cities with both good and bad people as your neighbors.

There is some crime, and then there are homeowners who work hard to maintain a community in their neighborhoods. The two cities did inspire my debut novel, "The End Justifies the Means," but most of the story takes place in Camden. It's in this city I delve into a story of a family's survival amongst crooked politicians, bigoted police, and everyday criminals with their sights on victimizing any and everyone.

"The End Justifies the Means" is uniquely creative fiction inspired by your life experiences. Can you tell us more about how your personal experiences informed the story and what messages or themes you aimed to convey in the novel?

The main message or theme I'm trying to deliver is the importance of family and how the choices we make in life directly determine how easy or difficult our lives will ultimately be. But success in life isn't as simple as making the right decisions. The story also shows that sometimes, life will only be as fair as you and I make it.

In "The Devil's Whisper," you depart from your own experiences. Can you elaborate on a world without war, crime, and violence?

What inspired you to explore such a utopian vision, and what challenges did you encounter in creating this alternate reality?

I ultimately wanted to write a story I'd never read in another book or create a storyline of scenes I'd never seen in a movie I'd already seen. And believe me, I've watched them all. I wanted to explore the duality of man's desire to live peacefully as well as violently and without consequence. I wanted to realistically create a world where humans have achieved peace on Earth, but they did so realistically. This means that to achieve this utopia, society would have to make the hard decision of exiling violent criminals who refused to live civilly. In the story, I essentially created Heaven and Hell on Earth.

The prison city, Katingal, in "The Devil's Whisper," is a fascinating and bleak setting. Could you discuss the thought process behind its creation and the moral dilemmas faced by the characters in this world?

I wanted to create the concept of Hell here on Earth. In basic religious principles, Hell is reserved for punishment in the afterlife. The characters didn't have to die in my story to reach Hell. Katingal is Hell, every and all day. I wanted to create a place I thought outlaws would appreciate.

Somewhere, anyone could kill, plunder, and maim indiscriminately. Most in the story embrace its moral freedoms while others fall victim to an existence they thought they wanted until they become victims.

"I AM..." delves into themes of justice and vigilantism. What led you to explore the aftermath of a tragic loss and the pursuit of justice in this narrative? How do the characters in the story grapple with these themes?

I wrote "I AM…" as a literary warning to America due to the repeated killings reported by news outlets of unarmed American citizens. The warning is simple… America's willful denial of the racial inequalities and issues we have in this country is the equivalent of a seaboard state ignoring the fury of a Category 4 hurricane barreling towards its shores.

I've lost a family member to a police shooting. I also have close friends who are in law enforcement. Due to those conflicting facts, I also made sure I told the story from two opposing points of view using a married couple where the husband is a police officer, and his wife is a civilian. I wanted the story to be as objective and unbiased as possible. I want this story to start the uneasy conversations about inequality in this country.

Your upcoming nonfiction book is titled "Survivor's Remorse." Can you offer a glimpse into what readers can expect from this work and how it ties into your previous novels or personal experiences?

All my stories are unique from each other.

They have different characters and messages delivered in their fictional text.

However, "Survivor's Remorse" will be my first nonfiction work. In this book, I dive into my personal experiences and traumas that ultimately developed me into the man, friend, and father I am today. I go into how each experience molded or shaped my personality and approach to living life. Some scenes or dialogue will potentially cross over with my 1st and 3rd due to some of my personality spilling over into those stories while writing them.

"Survivors Remorse" will undoubtedly be the most vulnerable I've been releasing a book.

As an author with a background in Information Technology and real estate, how has your professional career influenced your approach to writing and storytelling? Are there any parallels between these fields and your work as an author?

My professional, personal, and creative lives never cross. It's like having three distinct personalities. The tech professional and the entrepreneur side of me that enjoys real estate is rigid, goal-driven, and borderline obsessive with delivering on my objective.

My creative side doesn't care about shaving or wearing nice clothes. The creative in me wants to savor a glass of wine or slowly chew an edible before sitting at my desk. Where I enjoy a perfect view of nature, entertaining me through a window until my imagination takes over.

Whether those trance sessions like daydreaming span an hour or a few months, I'm never disappointed in the story I'm blessed with when I snap out of it.

The "Timeless" fashion show sounds intriguing. Can you share the inspiration behind the theme and concept of the show?

My favorite fashion era has always been the '70s and early ‘80s. I love the glitz, glam, furs, class, and simplicity the women of that time brought to the table. Timeless was originally going to be very retro; however, I decided to go a little more mature and modest, yet trendy to keep with the integrity of a collaborative project I was asked to be a part of.

What motivated you to showcase a diverse range of models, particularly those plus-size and over 40, in the "Timeless" fashion show?

I believe that women over 40 deserve to have their moment to own the runway since they are from one of the most iconic fashion eras of all time. This particular group of women come from all walks of life and still walk boldly into who they are.

They are confident in their bodies, and if they weren't then, they are now!

Angelina Blackman I’ve been modeling for 12 years, and I have to say that this show was one of my favorite shows because all of the models were mature with a lot of wisdom in the industry. The experience was great, and Keah was so loving, kind, and fun.

It was awesome, and the outfits were amazing!

Siobhan Connor The Timeless Show was one of a kind. It was such a different feeling walking for Keah. I enjoyed every minute of it, it wasn’t just walking with models 40 and over but it was like hitting the runway with my sisters. I love her positive spirit, personality, and her professionalism. I can’t wait for the opportunity to be a part of her Timeless show again.

How did you go about selecting models for the show, and what criteria did you consider to ensure a representative and inclusive lineup?

There was an in-person casting call for ladies 40+, size 8 and Up. My clothing brand can style sizes M/L - 5x, so they must fit that size range. What most people don't know is a size 8 is considered the industry minimum for plus size. While they do not have to be an experienced model, some former training or knowledge is always helpful. I look at their walk, ability to follow directions, and what garment(s) I believe will fit each model best.

In an industry that has historically favored youth and standard body sizes, what message do you hope to convey by featuring models of various ages and sizes in "Timeless"?

I pray that Timeless will show that at any age, women can look and feel good about themselves, especially in the size-inclusive community. The world needs to understand our ages are just used

to determine how long we have been on this earth. The numbers do not limit our ability to be fashionable.

Can you share any challenges or preconceptions you faced in convincing others to embrace the idea of diverse models for the show?

Honestly, I have no complaints about people being receptive to the idea. In fact, I received nothing but great feedback and was asked if it would be an annual show! Timeless is not the kind of show you see on a runway as often as it should.

What kind of response did you receive from the audience and the fashion community regarding the inclusion of plus-size and older models in "Timeless"?

The feedback is still coming in, and it's been two months! The models were elated to have so many family and friends in attendance. The audience not only got to see a phenomenal show packed with one-of-a-kind garments but some were even

Tasha Freeman - Demonia Hey, I'm Tasha Fierce the Model. I have been a model since 2017 and worked with Keah for more than 2 plus years on different projects. This is my first time working with Timeless but the experience was amazing thanks for selecting me.

Brandi Booker Keah Cheri of House of Sheba is one of a kind. We first met because she did my make-up at the Philadelphia Christian Fashion Weekend (PCFW) very first show. We instantly connected. Her spirit was full of joy, love, and laughter. Working with Keah has been a great experience. Even though what we do as "models" is fun, she's very professional when it comes down to business. I was elated to have been chosen to participate in the Timeless Fashion Show. There are not a lot of people in the industry that cater to the over-40 age group. The group of women that she chose was such a joy to be around. We had so much fun & worked well together. I'm so happy and proud of Keah Cher'i. It's been a long time coming, and she deserves everything she is finally receiving, to God Be the Glory. I can't wait until we do it again!!!

asked to participate in different icebreakers during intermission or in between segments. The fashion community is proud to see me do a show specifically for my "Mature Divas" as I call them.

I believe we broke down some barriers with this one.

Were there any standout moments or designs from the "Timeless" fashion show that you believe resonated particularly well with the audience?

We had a segment where the models personally styled themselves. They were allowed to wear a look that best described their personalities. The amazing models I selected for this show did not disappoint! They were so creative, from the outfits to the shoes, and even down to the accessories. That segment definitely gave a great ending to the show.

How did you ensure that the older models felt comfortable and celebrated on the runway, considering the emphasis on youth in the industry?

House of Sheba has always strived to offer fashionable

Terri Matthis It was an amazing experience working with Keah Cher’i and participating in her show. Keah was able to navigate through seen and unseen situations with grace and sophistication. She seemed unbothered with the details and could plan the show with her eyes closed. I hope I can participate in many more of her fashion shows. clothing that wouldn't compromise the integrity of any model that has worked for/represented the brand.

Models are asked how they feel in every piece of clothing before hitting the runway. I believe you look how you feel at any age.

When it comes to my mature models, it is my top priority that they are comfortable and CONFIDENT in what they're wearing before going on the runway. Each garment was chosen to accentuate their curves and leave the crowd speechless.

Based on the dozens of videos I received with the audience cheering for every single scene, the models made an everlasting impression on our guests that evening.

In what ways do you believe the "Timeless" show challenges traditional notions of beauty and fashion, particularly in relation to age and body size?

My oldest model is 76 years young. Ms. B is the epitome of class and elegance and still fiercely serves the runway! She is not your "traditional" plus model and for that reason alone,

Melanie Sheppard What can I say? When you're working with greatness and you see it manifesting. When you have the privilege to SEE what the Lord is doing! She's professional, thoughtful, loving, kind, determined and the list goes on. She's intentional about her work from model selection, outfits, music, and the order of the lineup.

Creativity is another weapon in her arsenal. So proud of her! It was an absolute pleasure to walk for her!

she stands out! Timeless brought a greater awareness of what it means to be naturally beautiful and what it means to age with grace, poise, and class. I was awarded the pleasure of having mothers, grandmothers, and GREAT grandmothers on a runway during the busiest fashion season in the city of Philadelphia.

What advice do you have for other designers who may be hesitant to break away from conventional standards and embrace a more diverse model lineup in their shows?

That's easy, get in your lane and drive it until the never-ending road runs out! Get it? Maybe not yet, however, you will! Fashion is rapidly evolving, people are maturing in age and STILL FLY! Let's get the mature models seen just as much as the younger generation.

Can you share your initial reaction when you were approached to be part of the "Timeless" fashion show, particularly given its emphasis on diversity in age and body size?

I was very excited to be chosen to be a part of Timeless. I only fully understood once I was selected that I would be modeling with women forty and older. Being in a room full of women of all shapes and sizes was a fantastic experience.

Considering the show's unique theme and diverse range of models, how did you prepare for the runway?

I affirm that this size 20 woman will be on a billboard, in a magazine, and a commercial.

Preparing for the show wasn't that bad. I had a model coach for the past two years (Jeannie Ferguson-Goodlow), So I was taught to walk the runway. The challenge for me was coming from New York to Philly every week. Some days were exhausting, but I pushed my way because I wanted to be part of timeless with House of Sheba. I saw Keah's vision and had to be a part of it.

Were there any specific challenges or empowering moments you experienced during the preparation and execution of the "Timeless" fashion show?

"Timeless" celebrated beauty at every age. How do you feel the fashion industry can continue to break agerelated stereotypes and embrace a broader definition of beauty?

Timeless was groundbreaking because being in this industry over forty is difficult. Opportunity is scarce in this industry, especially when you are up against women half your age. I wish people would focus more on the skills rather than the model's age. I hope that Timeless changes that in the years to come.

As a model focusing on inclusivity, what message do you hope your participation in "Timeless" sends to the fashion community and beyond?

I started having an interest in modeling in my late thirties. Some people told me I wouldn't go far because of my size, but I am big on body positivity, so I didn't let their opinions stop me. I chant as loud as possible that my size matters and want people to walk away with that confidence. This past year has been an eye-opener for me, and I am grateful that so many doors have opened up because of my size and confidence.

One thing that was challenging for me was finding the right shoes. I had emergency surgery on my right foot back in June, and I was devastated that I wasn't going to be able to walk the runway in time. I pushed myself in therapy, and although I had to lower some of my heels to walk in them comfortably, I did it.

Did you face any personal or professional challenges in embracing and celebrating your uniqueness on the "Timeless" runway?

Moments before striding down the runway, amid the usual pre-show jitters, Keah mentored me, along with the other ladies, and alleviated any challenges I was facing. She ensured our comfort and remained readily available for any assistance. Her support proved invaluable in my role as a model, as it is crucial to embody the brand's vision accurately.

Understanding my walking style, I conscientiously paced myself, slowing down when necessary and pausing gracefully for the cameras. A memorable piece of advice from House of Sheba resonates with me: "Have fun in my clothes and be yourself."

"Timeless" aimed to challenge traditional beauty standards. How did this resonate with you, and do you believe it will create lasting change in the industry?

Timeless went against the grain to create an experience utilizing mature women exceeding the 'traditional" size and height requirements. Participating in this event allowed me to display my love of self and fashion in ways other designers shy away from. I believe this is merely a start and more fashion houses need to follow suit. I do not feel this will be a lasting change in the Industry. However, all it takes is stepping out on faith and knocking down those doors to allow others like myself to walk through.

All pieces selected for this production were hand-picked for this specific event. The collection personified class and poise with a huge sprinkling of femininity—all elements of a Timeless Beauty.

How did you feel about the reaction from the audience and the fashion community to the "Timeless" show, and have you noticed any shifts in attitudes towards industry diversity?

Modeling is often associated with youth. How do you believe your participation in "Timeless" contributes to challenging agerelated stereotypes within the modeling industry?

The reaction from the crowd was overwhelmingly positive and electrifying. Many women in attendance saw a reflection of themselves on the runway; I wish more designers would attend these events to know that we can put on a good production, fill a venue, and sell a garment. We are making small strides but still need to be represented more in major productions.

My participation in Timeless challenged the age stereotype as soon as I hit the runway. You are only as old as you feel, and in the words of Aliyah, " Age is Nothing but a Number." I will continue to show up to castings with the same attitude and positivity and slay as someone half my age. Without our participation, they would have no shoulders to stand on.

Can you share any memorable experiences or connections you made with other models during the "Timeless" fashion show?

It happened quite suddenly, gone in the blink of an eye, and I find my life has irrevocably changed, and my heart is forever broken. Grief is the price of love. That is the lesson I've learned in this and the thing I hold onto to keep going.

While Harriet Tubman went through the unfortunate experience of being enslaved, God helped her escape and then used her to help others escape slavery through the Underground Railroad. God can bring us out of our plight and use us and our tribulations to help others. My poem speaks to letting God take your pain and turn it into purpose. Without having to relate to exactly

I can share my life's journey with others and relate to many. I desire to see people live their best lives and prepare them for their destiny in the kingdom of God. The title of your story, "Out of the Ashes,"

suggests a theme of transformation and renewal. Can you share how you emerged from your difficulties and what role faith played in your restoration?

Can you picture yourself having to climb a mountain without preparation? This is how I see my life in review. Initially, when I gave my life to Christ, I was ill-equipped to handle spiritual warfare, this type of illness, the isolation, verbal and emotional abuse, and fear of losing my life and the life of my daughter.

However, the more I learned of the Lord, stayed in church, His word, and grew my faith, the more I kept my faith. It kept me in a time and season of feelings of abandonment; God and His word were always available. I could call upon the name of the Lord at any day or night. My Pastor was always available when I needed her, as well as my church family. God didn't allow us to suffer any lack as my co-workers did amazing things for my family, even getting my girls everything they wanted one year for Christmas. I continued to grow in my faith and could climb the mountain. Some days were easier than others, but I didn't stop going or growing in my faith once I started ascending.

God's love healed me physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

You wear many hats as a published author, playwright, preacher, and teacher. How do these roles intersect and contribute to your mission of sharing the Gospel and inspiring others?

God is the focal point of anything I do in writing, preaching, or teaching. I am His mouthpiece, writer, teacher, and preacher.

Lifting Jesus will bring others into the knowledge of what He is capable of through the power of God. I'm God's Girl, and He has gifted me, called me, and anointed me to do His will.

Romans 8:28 is your favorite scripture, which speaks to the idea that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord. How has this scripture provided comfort and guidance, especially during challenging times?

For any scripture to help you, you must believe in your reading. God's word is what I stand on. It means that everything and anything that God allows me to go through is not for my good but for His glory. How do you hope your story in "Beauty for Ashes" resonates with young women and inspires them to overcome challenges and obstacles?

I desire to see young ladies and women learn from the life challenges I have shared and continue to share with them. I firmly believe that the Bible was written full of examples of how we can prosper in this life, not only financially, but by being who He has called us to be. The reality is that we all will be tested in some areas of life and society. People tend to be more of one who will co-sign on the bad that is going on instead of encouraging in a way that will produce lasting fruit; they may enable you to give up or get back at someone. I embrace everyone for their diversity, but one thing won't change, and that is the plans of Satan according to John 10:10: that the thief cometh not, but for to steal, kill and to destroy. But Jesus says I have come that you might have life, life more abundantly.

Maternal love and resilience are central themes in your book. Can you share a specific moment or experience where your love for your son played a pivotal role in his journey toward healing and recovery?

My son is still trying to heal and recover.

However, while the problem has not changed, my perspective has. I was never meant to be his "God," and yet, I placed myself in that position by always trying to make things better. I wanted more for him than he did. My role as a mother was to steward his life as a child. Once he became a man, my job was to be a mentor. I raised him the best way I knew how. His decisions are his and his alone. I can accept that now. In the long run, I can only support him and provide different opportunities to help him make better ones.

I'm here to do what I can to advise him and steer him in the right direction, but he has to want it for himself. I pray that one day he does.

Your bio mentions bringing purpose into the people equation to promote happier, healthier, and more meaningful life experiences. How does this philosophy relate to your book and the message it conveys?

By telling my story, I am showing how my son's struggle with addiction and mental illness has repurposed my life. I have taken the pain of walking with him through this to become an advocate for other mothers dealing with the same pain. The same is true for the struggles that most of us face. When we take that pain and turn it into purpose, we can move beyond our roadblocks and help others do the same.

That's bringing purpose to the people equation in its truest form.

Navigating the challenges of mental illness and addiction can be overwhelming for families.

What advice would you offer other parents and loved ones supporting someone on a similar journey?

As parents or loved ones, we can be enablers. We love our children. We would do anything to remove any pain they are feeling. We would do anything to take away the addiction and smooth the tough road ahead. We would give our lives if it would help, even a little. We cannot always prevent them from hurting because they need to experience the natural consequences of their actions to get better.

You cannot fix this on your own - You need the help of others to navigate through the issues that come with the addiction. That can be trying because the system is not designed to help. If the addicted person is an adult, they have the right to refuse treatment even if they need it. That's a struggle to watch.

A person with addiction and mental illness may lie, end up in jail, and choose to be homeless.

Life will not be the same.

Writing a deeply personal and emotional story like this can be cathartic but also challenging.

How did the process of writing "Unbreakable Love" impact you personally, and how did it help you cope with the challenges you faced?

Initially, I struggled with whether or not I should even put the story out there for the masses. Until the anthology submissions were requested, I only shared what I was going through with small groups of women. With the book release, way more eyes would be available to critique my mothering skills, ministry, and walk in general. But ultimately, it was another

opportunity to fulfill one of my ultimate goals: empowering and uplifting women. If this story can encourage just one, then my job is done.

As a speaker and mentor, how do you incorporate the lessons and experiences from your book into your presentations and mentoring sessions to inspire and empower others?

I tell my story. Anecdotes, illustrations, assessments, and other things like that are great. Still, people gain the most inspiration from knowing someone else has navigated through their stuff and is dealing with it personally. Sharing the message and tools I have personally used is very effective and meaningful when assisting others.

"Unbreakable Love" explores the healing that can arise from adversity. Can you share some examples of the healing and growth you and your son experienced throughout this journey and how it has shaped your perspectives on life and love?

I didn't know what tough love was until now. I've had to set some clear and consistent, sometimes painful but effective boundaries. I've had to grieve the loss of my son (or the son of my expectations) and love the son I have. We are both still learning, growing and trying to identify how to navigate this new normal. But my faith is strong, my love is strong, and I am strong. We'll get through this one day at a time.

For me, "purpose" is why we are here, on Earth. The evolution of the realization that I was born for a specific reason and that who I am today is a sum of all that I have been and experienced since my birth keeps propelling me forward. My faith sustains me, and my purpose keeps me focused, even on my most pain-filled days.

At every pivotal stage of my life, the death of loved ones, the mental illness diagnoses, life-altering surgeries, etc., I felt unheard and misunderstood. When I was hospitalized and diagnosed with Major Depression and Anxiety Disorders, I was told that as an ordained minister, I should never share that part of my story. It was said that it would destroy my reputation. Yes, some attempted to silence me, but many more thanked me for my transparency because it gave them encouragement and empowerment to address their issues. These are my people and purpose.

I never thought I would open the door to my past from the vantage point of authoring a story. But during the penning of Dancing in the Rain with a Purpose: Stories Behind the Smile, I felt a renewed sense of worthiness, a true ownership of my unrelenting happiness, and most importantly, an abundance of unwavering emotional FREEDOM! The title of your story suggests a powerful message of resilience and finding purpose even in the face of adversity. Can you elaborate on how you found the strength to overcome the trauma and build a purposedriven life?

Finding resilience during and after trauma is a timely process. Understanding "the why" that created the adversity in my life was tormenting and weighed heavily on my emotions. Before I got married, I had to learn how to feel safe again. I didn't trust anyone, making accepting their physical and emotional help difficult. I knew I needed to interact with people with similar experiences but refused to join a support group. When I married, I relied solely on my husband and therapists. However, my husband encouraged and coached me into accepting help and the support available to me from my family and friends. We joined the YMCA and employed a personal trainer. Also, my friend and art instructor at the local university taught art every Tuesday and Thursday evening at an elementary school, and I was her assistant (because of her push).

During the early phase of my recovery period, I was a school counselor, and I had access to Psychology Today. I searched for ways they suggested to help me move through this period in my life. One suggestion I clutched was journaling and meditation. Recording daily in my journal was magnificent. I could go back and read about happy days when I started sinking emotionally. And I already knew the method for meditation due to my religious background. I was growing emotionally, personally, and spiritually and didn't even realize what was happening. I had what my mom would call "A new lease on life." It was gratifying to know that my life was truly purposeful.

Your work as the CEO of Survivors Rock, Inc. demonstrates a solid commitment to supporting victims and survivors of commercial sex trafficking, rape, and extreme relationship abuse. How has your journey influenced your approach to helping others in similar situations?

My healing journey placed me in the same emotional and corporeal community of the clients we serve through Survivors Rock, Inc. A different style of counseling and environmental support is essential to abused victims' and survivors' emotional and spiritual healing.

During my journey, I thirst for "trust, honesty, and genuineness." I could feel when I was being exploited for information that wasn't pertinent to my healing. Survivors Rock, Inc.'s clients' requirements are the same. It is essential that they feel understood and are viewed as a victim and not a criminal. Confidentiality is the gold key when serving this fragile population. It is necessary for their recovery.

People grieve and heal differently. Don't be afraid to tell someone if you suspect something or someone means you harm. Tell someone if the person or person makes you feel uncomfortable. It doesn't matter if it's a family member, family friend, preacher it doesn't matter. Tell someone! Always know that the attack on your dignity wasn't your fault; it wasn't fair. That person took something from you that you didn't agree to. You were NOT a willing participant. Don't allow anyone to say there must be a reason for what happened.

That's not true! It is the nature of a pedophile to sexually rob you. Also, it is essential to understand "the why" and "the unfairness of the situation" that created adversity in your life. This will help prevent self-blaming. Seek help on your journey to healing. Don't isolate yourself from others. It would help if you had people in your life that understand what you are experiencing or have experienced. That allows you to know that you are not alone.

Your synopsis mentions a transformative moment when you found your place with God while packing up your first-grade classroom.

Can you share more about this pivotal moment and how it marked a turning point in your life?

A spiritual rebirth is what I call it. I earned a master's and an educational counseling specialist with a behavioral psychology certification. I was miserable during my entire teaching career. But we needed the finances to balance the family budget. However, it was a Friday afternoon after school. I was packing up my first-grade classroom, preparing to move to my new school. In 1991, the Alabama Board of Education added counselors to elementary schools.

I applied for a counseling position at the school where I was teaching, but I didn't get the job.

So, another job became available, and I was offered the position, and I accepted. I should have been overjoyed because I would finally be in the position I believed to be my purpose in life. But I was anxious, my stomach was uneasy, and my sweaty palms were flat. I started crying, and I was cold and shivering. It was summertime; I shouldn't have been cold. But I felt like I was freezing. I knew my friend kept a sweater in her room, so I walked across the hallway to her room and put the sweater across my shoulders. But when I was back in my room, I felt woozy. My legs began to buckle, and I had to fall to the floor. On the floor, I heard this voice, "I've been by your side all the time. I saw you, but you didn't recognize me." I understood that it was God's voice. I knew it was Him because I'd heard that voice many times before, but I didn't have the discernment to know it was Him. My mother often talked about Proverbs 16:3, "Commit your works to the Lord, and your plans will be established." But the night I was held hostage by a crazed drug addict, I gave God control that night. We connected! I could feel His presence all around me!

I got up from the floor and tried to continue packing, but I was disturbed! I was not anxious, but my spirit wasn't comfortable. Tears were flowing, and I didn't know why. I thought about what my friend said when she asked if I had told God everything. I don't remember having a conversation with Him about my struggles over the years and blaming Him for keeping the pedophile alive. I fell to the floor again. I didn't faint; my legs wouldn't hold me up! But that's where God wanted me, humble and stretched out on a dirty first-grade classroom floor. He made me submit to Him.

I begged Him to teach me how to forgive, and I apologized for disrespecting Him and blaming Him for my messed-up life. I needed His blessing. I saw first-hand that I would not make it without Him. I would be alive, going about my daily life, but I would be existing, not living. I needed His purpose for my life to go forth. The only way that would happen was for me to forgive those who hurt me and forgive myself. When I got home, I fell to my knees. I needed God to heal me where I hurt the most, on the inside! I was transformed that Friday night. I knew my heart, spirit, soul, and body were aligned with Him. His presence was deliberate! I was healed emotionally and spiritually!

That night, God equipped me with regional spiritual authority.

When I finally crossed the threshold moving into my counseling office, I said aloud and didn't care who was listening, "Here I am, God, executing the purpose you designed for me." The calmness and excitement I encountered that day were mind-boggling.

The inhumane act imposed on me wasn't in God's plans. However, it helped prepare me with the skills I needed. With professional help and God's guidance, I could accept the unfavorable events I encountered. I know that a purpose-driven life is what God predestined for me.

So, moving back home was a turning point that led to blessings in significant ways – blessings I couldn't secure in another state. In less than a year of being home, I was able to publish three books at the same time. I learned a valuable lesson: BE where God has called you to BE! Your bio mentions your extensive experience in writing, editing, and professional communications. How has your background in these fields influenced your storytelling and ability to convey your personal experiences to a broader audience?

I've been writing since I was nine years old. My childhood writings also play a part in my storytelling ability. A journalism degree from Jackson State University and an early career as a newspaper reporter further cemented my foundation in writing. My education and career experiences refined what God already instilled in me. Those decades of professional experience helped me to be able to write anything for any audience at any time at the drop of a hat and with little effort. That's Godgiven with some touches of trained skills.

Financial struggles are a common challenge many people face. What specific lessons or insights did you gain from your financial difficulties, and how have they shaped your approach to financial stability and planning?

I have learned to do much with little.

Though my approach has always been to live below my means, I also believe that you can't take your money and assets with you when you die. Pay your bills, but also pay yourself too! So it's OK to splurge some. Just be reasonable. I can now afford Bounty paper towels, but I will still go for those 50-cent paper towels. Then I'll turn around and buy myself a $1,200 ring. I have a thing for fine jewelry. But guess what? That next splurge may not be for another year. Life is all about balance. As my money continues to grow (claiming that!), I'll keep that mentality in enjoying some things but also living below (or within) my means.

Also, keep your money in separate banking institutions. I have two savings accounts: one for moving money around when/if needed. And one that doesn't have quick access so that it will grow. That way, when I need money, I borrow from MYSELF! After years of disobedience to God, you mention that the next chapter in your life led to blessings and purpose in motion. Can you share how your faith and spirituality played a role in your transformation and newfound purpose?

I'm human, OK. I've had some very angry screamfests at God. I've battled some depression and a mini-meltdown. But my foundation in faith is sooooo deeply rooted that even in my worst life's episodes, I was drawn back to God and His grace and goodness. Past experiences reminded me that God has always been there and never leaves. And if He were with me during other dark periods, another storm would be no different. One thing about those storms is that they eventually go away.

And better days will come.

You have authored four books and are currently working on your fifth novel. How does your writing process help you navigate and reflect on the various chapters of your life, and how do you hope your books inspire or connect with your readers?

Hopefully, I don't have to think/meditate too hard on my life experiences to connect with my readers. What I've been through, I know others may suffer in silence. Our life experiences sometimes aren't our own; it's to help others. My writing process is meditation and conversations with God, asking Him what I share. My first novel [Make Me Whole] had absolutely no rewrites. What I wrote the first time around is what I gave readers. I meditated and asked God, 'What do I write?' And sure enough, He showed me what to write three

In addition to your writing, you're involved in community theater and preparing for your directorial debut. How does your involvement in the arts complement your writing, and what do you enjoy most about the creative process?

I am sooooo loving community theater. I didn't know it would be so much of a natural fit. But I think that happens when you allow God to move in your life – that what's for you will make it to you. I joined the Greenwood Little Theatre as a patron and was invited to a play-reading meeting; the rest is history. I'm currently studying the script that I will direct in early 2024 hopefully. The words that I read in a script, I'm witnessing it come to life through actors. I think getting involved with theater is helping me to appreciate words even more and have a greater respect for the cast and crew of any production. I love it. I think it will help my creative process become more prosperous and colorful as I blog and write books. And hopefully, one day, stage plays and films.

Let me share an incident from the first novel. I wrote about an actual Atlanta restaurant location. The restaurant was large, so I'd only seen parts of it. But in the vision of what I was to write, I saw a circular booth where the characters gathered. A couple of years later, I visited that restaurant again and went to the other side of the restaurant that I hadn't seen before. That circular booth I visualized and wrote about years prior was in that restaurant.

I plan to continue inspiring and uplifting by being transparent about my life. I'm not ashamed of what I've been through. It's helped to build my character, made me mentally stronger, and made me more compassionate about people. Life has a way of humbling you.

And that's sometimes a good thing. My advice to those dealing with life's challenges is to not give up on yourself.

Find whatever your source of spirituality is and yield to where your heart and mind are leading you. Know or seek your purpose because that's ultimately where your success is going to be. That's where the open doors are. So don't be discouraged about closed doors because it only saves you real headache/heartache and redirects you to where you're supposed to be.

Trust the process, but make sure it's the correct process you're supposed to be going through. If we're honest with ourselves, sometimes, we make bad decisions on our own. But the good thing is it's always possible to start over as long as there's breath in your body.

Is it financial distress? Find another stream of income to help you get ahead. We make excuses that we don't have time. When, in actuality, we can make time for whatever [and whomever] we want. You can just make up your mind on your game plan. Truly devote some time to your purpose and stick to that schedule. If you put some time in, God will do the rest. But you got to move first.

Like Hannah, some of us feel that nothing else is required as long as we go to church and pray. Our lives are still a mess. I'm here to say sometimes we can have Jesus and still need a therapist, and it's okay.

You've written novels, short stories, and articles. How does your approach to storytelling differ when crafting a short story like this one, compared to a longer work like a novel?

My approach is not different. I always want to craft a story readers will love. The challenge for me when writing a novel is not giving away the goodies too soon. I had to learn to develop and include supporting characters and situations to help move the story forward.

Your first book, "Bare Necessities: Sensuous Tales of Passion," was nominated for an African American Literary Award. How has your writing evolved since then, and what aspects do you feel have grown or developed the most over the years?

Oh, it has evolved A LOT! (laughter) As it should have, right? I'm an avid reader. I also take mental notes on character development and scenery descriptions when I read a book. All the things that make a good book a good book. I will also go back, read my old stuff, and see what I could have done to improve it. The types of stories I've decided to tell now are different.

Don't get me wrong, I can still give a good erotic tale (laughs), but there are so many other aspects to Black women and our lives than our sexual appetites or fantasies. I want to write

In your bio, you mention living in Birmingham with your family. How do your life and community experiences inform your writing, and do you draw inspiration for your stories from your surroundings?

My personal life and experiences play a large part in my writing. I grew up in a family of secret keepers. "What happens in this house stays in this house," and "Why are you always bringing up the past" type people. It wasn't long before I understood how those patterns kept us bound to whatever the trauma was. I wanted to know and talk about the stories. Maybe in my little way, I knew there was freedom in not hiding. I was an only child, so I had nothing to do except ask questions. Some got me a backhand to the mouth, but some were answered. I lived for those. As a grown woman, the ones that got me slapped in the mouth as a child have come to light. Also, life as a Black girl/woman is a never-ending content stream. A few conversations are being had today that don't include us in some form. Whether it is the right to make decisions regarding our bodies or the recent horrific conflict in Israel, Black women are affected. Let's talk about it.

The work that I do to help victims of domestic violence and those who are less fortunate translates heavily into the poetry I craft. I

One of the most rewarding things I've done in these situations is to acknowledge that the feelings I was experiencing were true. It would be unfair for me to suffer and minimize the wrongdoings and chalk it up to "it just being life" and "I'll get over it." I stopped looking at my pain as an inconvenience to others. I led with raw honesty and got to the source of the issue and how it shouldn't have happened in the first place. With all this, the most important takeaway for me was three things. First, I cannot control how others treat me; I can only choose if I am willing to participate. Second, either way, this was going to be an uncomfortable experience. I had the option to speak up or conform. One option holds dignity; the other will harbor resentment. Lastly, if I were to allow this to continue, would another young black woman have to suffer? The last was my non-negotiable.

I believe the key steps for overcoming adversity are acknowledgment, change, healing, and, most importantly, release. We all have a walk in life; some may differ from others, but each is relative. With healing comes transformation; it is essential to remember that it is OK to let go of things that no longer suit you. That must go, whether that's your happiness, peace of mind, mental health, or anything willing to attack. In this life journey, it is essential to pack light but dream big and be your best advocate.

This allows me to share my experiences with the world; the most important thing is that it also allows me to heal and potentially help while creating something I love. Poetry is an art that needs to be shared with the world; you may never know who relates.

In addition to your poetry, you're working on your first published full-length book of poetry and prose. Can you provide a sneak peek into what readers can expect from this upcoming book and how it may expand on the themes explored in your poem?

The book is going to be a compilation of all of my work. It is going to share personal experiences and triumphs. The book is going to share different perspectives as well. For example, if pain were to take human form, they would say this to you. I have kept many of my experiences and innermost thoughts from the world. I feel deeply relieved and grateful that my work, emotions, and story will finally be shared with others.

"The Miseducation of a Black Girl" reflects the experiences of many black women. How do you hope your poem resonates with young black women who may relate to the challenges and complexities you've portrayed, and what message of empowerment would you like to convey to them through your art?

I hope this exposes black women to knowing we do not always have to be the superhero in

everyone else's story, and sometimes it is OK not to be OK. As a black woman, at times, I feel we are designed to believe we must suffer first.

That is the furthest thing from reality. You do not have to go through life enduring, and it is translated to being just life for us. The message I want each woman who finds herself in these situations to know is that it is that God has made us each promise; in moments like this, do not curse the experience you are being challenged with. Allow this to mold you for the better, apply what you learned from the experience to your life, and make it a full-circle moment. Find the blessing amid the chaos because there's usually a lesson that needs to be applied to life. Turn that pain into purpose; do not let the pain govern your journey in life.

Honestly, in the beginning, it was difficult because, despite my faith, I am yet human.

Talks with my pastor helped quite a bit, but taking the time to read my Bible and spending time in prayer played a big role in my healing and recovery. I advise anyone facing a health challenge to find out everything they possibly can about it, ask their doctors as many questions as possible, and research on their own. If they do not have an intimate relationship with God, it is not too late to have one.

You are not only an author but also an inspirational speaker. How do you incorporate your personal experiences into your speaking engagements to motivate and uplift others going through similar trials?

Most times, the speaking opportunities happen to be about something I have been through, so sharing my experiences and the resolve, the important part being a resolution, if possible, helps to uplift others. Most importantly, sharing my stories lets people know that they are not alone in what they are going through and that if I could come through by faith and my belief in God, so can they.

Depression is a significant theme in your story. Can you share how you navigated the emotional challenges and depression that came with your health struggles and what strategies or support systems helped you during those times?

Depression is a monster that strikes when you least expect it to, so I will be honest and say

that it was the hardest part of my health struggles. At first, I spent most of my days in bed, only surfacing to do what I had to do, then repeating the same the next day. Unfortunately, I did not seek professional help, but my mindset is different today. However, during those times, I had my mother, my sons, and my best friend very close by. Finally, I was offered an opportunity that forced me out of bed and out of my house, and it opened the chance to grow in ways I had never imagined. By the time the second cancer diagnosis showed up, I was no longer in the mind to sit back and take it; I was ready to fight and live, and that is just what I did.

As a licensed evangelist, how has your faith community and church played a role in your healing journey, and how can faith be a source of strength and resilience in difficult times?

As with any organization, sometimes, because you have a title, people assume you are strong at all times, but I am blessed in that some took the time to minister to me where I was without questioning my temporary lack of faith at one point in my journey. My pastor, a bishop with over 20 churches under his leadership, is a man of faith and prayer, which has played a major role in my healing journey. He and other members of our congregation took the time to speak a word of faith and pray for me, especially during the most difficult times.

Because of this, my faith in God grew in time, which is why, by the second diagnosis, I could stand on my faith, God's Word, and prayer.

Your bio also mentions that you are a brand ambassador. Can you elaborate on your role as a brand ambassador and how it aligns with your mission of sharing your story and inspiring others?

As a woman of color, we suffer from quite a few hair growth and loss problems, something that I have and am dealing with today. I am a brand ambassador for a company with products that have been the answer to the hair loss problem, so there is no way I would not share that with others. As women and men, our hair is so important to us; it is our crowning glory. Not unlike other women, I want my hair to be healthy. Hair loss steals so much, but if I find something that works, I have no problem positively representing the brand.

Can you share how you came to this realization and how it has shaped your perspective on life and living with purpose despite challenges?

One Sunday, I was standing at the altar for prayer and heard these words, "You are limitless through your limitedness." Surely, they did not come from me; I even questioned at first if "limitedness" was a real word. Since it is not one I use, I began to meditate on those words and what they meant to me. it began the change in the trajectory of my life in the sense that I was of no more use due to my physically challenged body. I knew then that God still had work for me, and even if it meant having a vision and asking for others to help it manifest, I was still useful to this world.

More than fifty percent of survivors never report at all. I want my experience to let those who have had this happen to them that the shame is not yours. And they should feel that this is just one chapter in their story. There is no magic fix. There will be bad days. I still have bad days from the memories of that experience and what I lost because of it. I remember that I did survive, and I matter. I want other women to know that they matter, their stories matter, and their healing matters. I refuse to silence myself anymore. I took back my power by sharing this story, and I want other survivors to know they can do the same.

You have three stories on Amazon's KindleVella platform. Could you tell us more about your writing journey and your aspirations as an author?

People always say I am a warrior and so strong for dealing with all that. I felt like a fraud. I couldn't continue to use fear as a reason to not get my work out into the public. If something happened to me, publishing anything would prove that I was here and that I lived. Your bio mentions that you want to bring glory and honor to God. How does your faith play a role in your writing and speaking engagements, and how does it relate to the message of empowerment you convey to your readers and audiences?

My heart's desire is to inspire my listeners and readers to develop a relationship with Jesus Christ. Whenever I preach, teach, or publish, I encourage people to include God in every aspect of their lives. When society, family, friends, wealth, and or/finances fail, God will carry us through. I have only been able to arise by faith in God's love, ability, and presence in my life.

It is very easy for us to blame life's challenges on other's involvement. However, thinking we did not play a part in our rise or fall is delusional. For example, my marriage fell apart. What is the part that I played in that?

Well, for starters, I married the man, choosing to ignore the red flags that were blatantly flying during our courtship. My choice added a volume of unnecessary stress to my life.

Accepting that fact has helped me to sharpen my discernment so that I will not make the same poor decision in the future, and it has helped me to release the bitterness and grudge that started to form in my heart. It helped me to forgive. When you can accept your imperfections and forgive yourself, it makes it easier to forgive others.

Seeking therapy for inner healing is another aspect you touch upon. How can therapy and counseling contribute to one's journey of selfdiscovery and resilience, and what advice do you have for individuals who may be hesitant to seek professional help?

I recommend therapy because trained professionals can help you to get to the root of "you." They will ask you tough questions without judgment and then offer sound guidance to usher in recovery. I would encourage those who are hesitant to consider the pros of getting help, which outweigh any cons. Therapy allows us to be honest about how we truly feel with someone who is not emotionally connected to us in any way. It's a chance to release as opposed to harboring soulcorrupting negativity.

Your chapter emphasizes the acceptance of self-worth and refusing to settle for less than one's value. What strategies or practices can individuals adopt to build and maintain a strong sense of self-worth in the face of adversity?

I think that we all must understand that we are a gift to the earth. We are here because we are God's choice. Since we are the result of God's creativity and ingenuity, we must believe it, act like it, and not allow anyone to handle us in any other way. If we live our lives like we are God's choice, then we will not settle for anything or anyone that God has not chosen for us.

You've written both fiction and non-fiction works, including children's books. How do you approach writing in different genres, and how do these varied forms allow you to address diverse audiences and messages of empowerment?

Fiction, non-fiction, and children's books require a different mindset. When writing fiction, I must dig deep into my creative reservoir and allow my imagination to carry me to a myriad of situations, settings, solutions, problems, personalities, and temperaments to pen a relatable and entertaining tale. Children's book requires me to "think like a child." Often, I will think about how my son would phrase a sentence. I ask myself, "How would my son or his cousins handle this situation?" Nonfiction is a completely different approach; it is more information based on research and experiences. Non-fiction work does not require much imagination but does require quite a bit of inspiration.

Your children's book series, "Manny And The Magic Keys," includes an educational curriculum.

Can you share more about the impact of this series in schools and how storytelling can be a powerful tool for teaching important life lessons to young readers?

The Manny and The Magic Keys series has been well received in NJ schools, and copies have been gifted to over 200 students by organizations and individuals throughout the state. Children constantly ask, "When will the next book be available!"

The Manny And The Magic Keys curriculum supports the development of reading comprehension strategies and creative writing skills. The reading comprehension and writing skills that students will practice include inferences summarizing story elements and grammar emphasis in punctions, spelling, writing process, and developmental writing. The objective of the curriculum is for students to be able to write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using narrative techniques, descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

It most likely didn't happen again if you became pregnant, either as a teenager or out of wedlock. Why? Because of shame and that painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behavior. But like everything, there's a catalyst behind this. And that catalyst is social media, and like Chris Rock said in his comedy special, we're addicted to attention. Attention, and the more of it you receive, shame becomes irrelevant—out the damn door.

Third. We have a crisis in America, and that's the destruction and dismantling of the Black Family. This isn't anything new. I always believed that the government and this country designed the collapse of the traditional nuclear Black Family. It began with slavery, but that's another story to write about. Where it took full effect was first the attack on the Black Panther Party in the 60's. Second, social welfare programs were pushed on the black communities in the late 60's. And third, the crack epidemic in the 80s. A functional and traditional family can shape children's behavior, character, and ability to interact healthily. Girls aren't becoming teenage mothers or promiscuous. And boys aren't looking for guidance and father figures through gangs and the streets. I've read that more than half (51.2%) of all Black children live with one parent, the most dominant parent being a single mother, compared with about one in five (21.3%) white children. That's ridiculous. Being raised in

a single-parent household can become crippling to Black children, leading to the underprivileged and increasing their chances of criminality and psychological issues. Part of what Welfare did was take black men and fathers out of the household if the mother was dependent on government assistance. It didn't matter if the father was unemployed or making minimum wage; he couldn't be there to help raise his children.

The traditional nuclear Black Family has always been a threat to society. A healthy marriage and family can significantly change these kids' actions and behavior and better our community.

Children coming from healthy marriages and families most likely won't be influenced by GLorilla telling girls to become toxic and delusional in their 20s or Britney Renner boasting about having sex with multiple men. I'm not here to judge GLorilla, Brintney, or anyone or their upbringing. I'm saying we need to wake up and understand what is happening. This country is willing to keep white families intact for their future but hellbent on dismantling and destroying the nuclear Black family by any means necessary. We see this with their biased laws, unjust social programs pretending to help but do more harm, and mandatory imprisonment, among many other things.

Because they know children have a better chance of becoming productive, fruitful, educated, and mobile engineers toward their future with the proper upbringing via a healthy marriage and family.

In the words of Larry Burkett, "The Black Family unit that had survived 150 years of slavery was decimated in less than 30 years by welfare payments that stopped if the family structure remained intact."

And that's what the "Eff" is going on.

Where are you from, and can you share a moment from your early life when you first felt a strong connection to music and the guitar, and what drew you to this particular instrument?

I was born in South Philadelphia, 13th and Wharton, to be exact. One of my earliest and most recurring memories of music was hearing my mother play the radio station WDAS on our car rides back from my grandmother's house, who lived in the Germantown section of Philly. In those car rides down Broad Street going back to South Philly, I would hear R&B and soul artists like Kem, The Isley Brothers, and Tony, Toni, and Tone.

Surprising as it may seem, I was never really into music during those times. It wasn't until I was 12 years old that things started to take relative shape. Oddly enough, I never told my parents I wanted to learn the guitar. It happened by accident. I wanted Guitar Hero 3, and my mom flat-out told me, "You're not getting that game until you learn how to play a real guitar." Fifteen years later, here we are. (And 'til this day I never got the game Guitar Hero 3).

MADNESS Our solitude provides solace.

It also comes with involuntary madness.

Somehow once you battle through the loneliness and the sadness, you can obtain complete happiness or revert to complete insanity.

Its the vanity that creates calamity in our lives as we strive to achieve meaning, our claim of purpose.

Somewhere along the was between broken promises and shattered dreams, we find ourselves working, questioning the quality of our own existence wondering if it's even Worth it or worthless.

Hiding our insecurities on the surface through our actions and reactions, running from our pain through distractions, all in the name of the pursuit of happiness and satisfaction, still we settle for the instant gratification of now.

This cycle of self-destructive nature is is embedded in our DNA, wired into the hatred we disguise as self love despite the laws of attraction.

Our perspective views of those we interact with are packed with, a shit ton of baggage that changes us into saints or savages, or giants or nothing more than average, or useless.

You got too much potential if only you would just use it, but the truth is it was never as easy as it sounds.

Take a good look around and with out making a sound, question yourself.

Are you where you want to be?

Have you been to all the places that you always wanted to see?

Is this the job of my dreams?

Do I even understand what it means to be me?

Most of us have no answers to these questions because we lie to our minds, constantly making the excuse that we still have time, when in reality at any moment we could be gone in an instance, man, woman, child, it makes no difference.

Its not the life we envisioned, but it the one we've been given.

I can’t believe my friend Kelani got me in this messed up situation again. I have got to stop trusting her to pay me my money back on time. I have bills due immediately, and I have no one to call when I need someone to look out for me. Nobody I call never has any money when I need it. They could have won the lottery yesterday and wouldn’t let me borrow a red cent. I have to think fast; my light bill is past due. I called the energy company today to get more time to pay.

The lady was so lovely but could only give me until the end of the day today because I’m already ten days past due.

“Hey, baby.” My daughter walked in. “Hey mom, what’s wrong? You look worried. Are you okay?”

“Oh yeah, I’m okay, I laughed to keep from crying. I’m just here thinking of how to pay the light bill. Kelani was supposed to pay my money back today, and now she’s not answering my phone calls.”

I know I had no business telling my 16-year-old daughter about situations I’m supposed to have under control. “Aw, Mom, everything will be okay. I think it’s time for me to start thinking of getting a job to help out around here since I’m 16 now.”

“No, I want you to focus on school, just focus on walking across that stage and going to college, let mommy worry about the bills. I would have had the money if I had never trusted Kelani to pay me back on time.”

“Momma, how many times has Kelani borrowed money from you and never paid you back? I would have never let her borrow anything else. But I understand; that’s just how big your heart is.”

“I made sure I told her that I needed that money back. I will figure it out; I always do.”

“I love you, Mom. I’m about to go over to my friend’s house. Her mom invited me over for dinner.”

“Okay, baby, call me when you make it over there.” *** I walked to my friend Dora’s house and did a lot of thinking. I needed to get a job to help my mom out around the house. We can’t get our lights turned off. I kept walking and was almost at Dora’s house when I spotted something on the ground. When I picked it up, it was an unscratched lottery ticket. I knew I was too young to play the lottery, but I still reached into my pocket and grabbed a penny. I hoped to win at least a thousand dollars because my mom and I could use the money. The lottery ticket was for up to seven thousand dollars. I scratched the ticket anyway, without worrying about my age. I was stunned when I read, “Match 3 like symbols and win the prize shown.” I matched three symbols, and the prize shown was, for the max, seven thousand dollars. My eyes lit up, and I didn’t go to my friend’s house. I immediately ran back home to give my mom the good news.

I am tying up loose ends. The lace on my sneakers, the ribbon wrapped around my dreadlocks, the people in my life. It must happen today—the decluttering of my two decades of living on this planet.

First, I must decide if the pink scrunchie on my mahogany dressing table is tight enough to hold each strand of hair on my head.

Then, I met Aisha for the first time in almost five years. This meetup will take a little bit of time, thirty minutes in total. We will sit at the table in the middle of Drumstick's eatery. Far away from the entrance, so the sound of cars and bikes doesn't interrupt our conversation, but not too close to be disrupted by the unpleasant whiff of the toilet.

There would be no need to worry about the sound of vehicles disrupting our conversations because she would barely say a word to me, nor would I. I would rather spend the entire time staring at her lips, wondering what it would taste like. No, I do not mean it sensually. I would steal glances at her chipped nails, wondering when last she had a manicure. I would intentionally drop my serviette on the floor so that I could bend down and take a look at her toenails. Unfortunately, she would be wearing black, flatcovered shoes.

The previous day, when we exchanged messages on WhatsApp, she sounded excited to see me. I did not consider that although we chatted daily, we were physically strangers. How do you intertwine your life with an internet stranger, creating authentic friendship but somehow still retaining the elements of awkwardness?

After the awkward and unnecessary meetup with Aisha, I will go to Tope. She is always inviting me to all these writing events, and I have made a habit of constantly rejecting her invites. But today, of all days, I must go to her and spend the entire afternoon seated beside her–my second favorite person after Aisha– watching the Nigerian animation on the screen. The carefully curated display of Sango in a fight ring during the era of the Roman Era. It will stir up unsated feelings within me. Force me to rethink my 'decluttering' process. For a brief moment, I will envision the world without me, and it will cause the built-up tears in my eyeballs to fall freely.

Tope will look at me uncomfortably like Nigerians do when someone they care about deeply breaks down. Confusion and pity scrambled up together on her beautiful face. I will go to the bathroom, wipe the tears off my face in the sink, and watch the mascara run down my cheeks. I will remove the wipes from my handbag and completely wipe the makeup off my face.

I will reach into the bag for another wipe and stumble on the bottle of meds I plan to overdose on. I will intently read the ingredients of the bottle, wondering how the combination of all these big words has the power to end my life if taken in excess.

But before this happens, I will tie the lace on my shoes and sing along to Nasty C's 'Dear Oliver.' The line 'Used to wanna die young, now I wanna touch eighty' will cause some sort of internal vibration within me. I will collapse to the ground on my knees; sobs will escape me, forming animal-like sounds from my mouth. My heart, which has felt like old, wrinkled fingers, is squeezing it, and it will, for the first time in 2023, experience a loosening. The fingers that have crept too deeply into the superior vena cava will dislodge itself painlessly.

I will stay on my knees like that, the tears gushing out in current. Slowly but surely, because of the lyrics of a song, I will want to live again. My resilience will save you.

'Life isn't a bed of roses.'

While that is true, and not everyone expects roses, what will be said for those whose carefully sown roses are forcefully and heartlessly reaped?

I recall it all vividly. The cold, dewy morning of September 15th, 2010. The soulshattering call. The wailing and drama that ensued. The wild, distant look in her eyes that became familiar in days to come. The banging on the gates sooner than expected.

The in-laws had arrived! All but one mission in mind.

"Witch! Gold digger!". They would chant at every arrival.

She always sat behind the window overlooking the cashew trees that drew in radiant, golden rays that enveloped the room daily. The curtains were drawn this time, and all she did was listen.

For years she had slowly built with him, pouring all of herself into the relationship whilst ignoring her needs, but he had left her butt naked in the storm. Fueled by an infuriating obsession for his family, he had none of the inheritance in hers nor their offspring's name but rather in that of his father and elder brother.

I recall the choking sobs that became a nightly routine. The look on her face the day we left. The emptiness in her eyes paired with the defiance that sat pretty in her jaws and shoulders. I recall her putting that defiance to motion. With five mouths to feed, she got to work.

But, every day, she faded. After parading a cooler of her delicious moi moi, her reward was a series of constant body pain and swollen feet.

Yet those shoulders never sagged, and neither did the jaws lose their defiance.

Ten years later, seated at her table, staring at her, all made up as she blew off the candles with the same demeanor as the day we left, it dawned on me just how lucky I was.

I have a woman who makes defiance look so beautiful.

"Earth to Stella. What are you thinking, dear?".

"Nothing. Just how lucky I am. Happy Birthday, Mother."

My Maternal grandmother, who was she? I pause and close my eyes. What do I remember about her?

There are so many memories, and yet, there's nothing. What do I remember about her? How can I tell her story without betraying our shared memories? What do I remember about her? I implore my hands to write. The first thing that comes to mind is her oval face, her light skin, and how she always blinked furiously whenever she spoke.

I remember the last time I saw her; she was crying; she didn't want me to leave. I didn't want to leave, but I needed to. I remember her scent. I wish I could describe it, but I cannot. I try to imagine her birth; what was it like? Her parents, my great-grandparents, had they been euphoric, overjoyed? Was she an only child? What was her favorite toy as a child? Did she marry for love? What were the happiest moments she experienced as a child? As an adult? When she was a teenager.

I try to imagine if life was good for her when she was young. How did she spend her childhood? Was she a happy child? There are no pictures of her as a child, and I cannot help but wonder what she looked like as a young girl, if she had friends, if she was everyone's favorite, if she knew how to dance, if she had supportive adults in her life that helped her to navigate the parts of life that they could help with.

I recall how, because I couldn't speak Esako, we didn't really converse as I would have wanted us to when she was alive. She couldn't speak English properly, and though she spoke Yoruba, I didn't understand that either, so we could converse whenever we wanted to, with our hands or the help of interpreters mostly my mom. I recall her stories, the questions I would ask her, and how she always answered them.

You see, I learned that she was a young woman, a farmer, and a trader. She trekked for miles so that she could go to the farm. And I visualize a group of young women, my grandmother among them, with a hoe on her back, free of worry as she trekked to harvest her crops. I recall the way she walked, the way she struggled to walk, how much pain she was in whenever she walked, always holding on to the walls in her house, each step more careful than the next.

I remember her in excruciating pain whenever a local herbalist came to check the legs. She held her face up high, with no tears, just low mumbling. I recall her laughter, not loud, not frightening, quite beautiful.

I smack my lips together, and for some reason, I can taste her Ogbono soup, how sticky it was, how tasteful and rich it used to be, and how I always wanted more. I remember her pounding yam, the yam we would use to eat the Ogbono soup, and how effortlessly she wielded the pestle while she sat. I remember her groundnut soup; it's the only one I enjoyed. I remember the roasted cashew nuts she gave me as a child, which she prepared herself with so much love for and always left me in awe. I recall the day she died, my mother's voice on the phone as she told me the news. I recall the souvenirs at her Fidau. It was not till I saw them being shared that I accepted that she was gone.

Her Biography is very short. Nothing really interesting, because you see, if you are not a degree holder from Harvard or didn't spend your life receiving noble prizes, you're just irrelevant to the media. You're survived by seven children and ten grandchildren like that's a bad thing. And there's no Wikipedia page on you. No Google images of you. So, the only memories are the ones that are orally told, and memory always fails. I think that's why I'm writing this. I do not want to forget her; I cannot forget her. She was this huge part of my life, and everyone deserves to know the funny, kind, hardworking, intelligent, strong, beautiful, and brave woman named Zenebu but called Òna Íbíyé as she advanced with age, whose PG 121 memory I cannot do justice to explaining.

I sobbed uncontrollably in the psychiatric unit of the hospital, where I was committed for attempting to kill several men in my life because they were evil and dangerous.

How did I come to believe killing another human being was the only way to stop them from hurting me? Was it growing up in a household where epic proportions of dysfunction rained down like sharp knives from the ceiling in every room of my house? Was it the fights where every piece of furniture was hurled through windows on a regular basis? Maybe it was being sexually molested for years in secret.

I couldn’t wait to escape the madness! I prayed for the day when I could tell the crazy person I called a parent to kiss my ass as I walked away forever.

Once released, I graduated high school at seventeen and secured a good job and apartment. I went easing down the yellow brick road like Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. However, I didn’t know it would take years before I could tap my ruby slippers three times to find my real home. As a young girl starving for a love I knew nothing about, I found a jaded substitute in the wrong place.

I met this fine brown man with sculpted muscles that glistened in the light of day and the dark of night. He charmed the pants right off my behind. It didn’t matter to me. He just got out of prison for armed robbery. He told me he wanted to change his ways, and I believed him. I even told him I would help him get there because I thought I was in love.

I still thought I was in love when I found the sawed-off shotgun in my closet when he told me he would visit his mama for a couple of days. I continued to think I was in love when that fine brown frame came back panic-stricken as he told me the cops were after him for robbing a store.

“We have to pack our stuff and get out of here,” he said.

“We, whose we?” I asked because this was my apartment, and I didn’t do a damn thing “It doesn’t matter if you didn’t do anything. You’re an accomplice because you’re with me.”

At nineteen, I was young, dumb, naïve, and believed him.

We moved in with his mama, who told me I was too sweet to be with her son. She said he was going to hurt me. I didn’t believe her.

His mama was right. He began to beat the hell out of me when I protested as his girlfriends knocked on the door to get him. I stayed because I still thought I loved him. I had no idea I didn’t love myself until I got beat because it was my fault that I was pregnant. I was done after that, and I ran for the lives of me and my unborn baby.

Several years later, I met a man who authentically loved me and my daughter. Even though I received his love with open arms, there was something evil growing in my soul that I believed wanted to kill me.

To numb my pain, I began using drugs. Things got bad fast, and I began doing some insane shit, like driving high with my children in the car. I hated myself, and I hated using drugs, however I couldn’t stop.

It was during this time I told myself life was not supposed to hurt like this. I knew if I didn’t get help, something horrible was going to happen.

I began attending twelve-step meetings and went for therapy. The work required to find the authentic person I was on the day I was born was hard. Yes, I walked away from all the trauma I experienced; however, the wounds left behind were open, bleeding, and painful. Healing was required. With that healing, I learned to love my authentic self.

Thirty-six years later, I live an extremely peaceful life. I’m a substance abuse and mental health counselor. I’m also a speaker and the author of “Thru the Tunnel. Journey of a Warrior Woman.” I’m living my authentic life as I help other women reclaim theirs.
