HEIR TO THE THRONE The Multifaceted

Ravi Coltrane

There are a few apple analogies, such as: one bad apple can spoil the bunch, and an apple a day will keep the doctor away. But this article is focused on the one that claims the apple does not fall far from the tree. In this case, all claims are indelibly true as they pertain to Ravi Coltrane. He has brought a certain ingenuity and groundbreaking sound to the world of Jazz as too did his father, the late great John Coltrane. Hearing him via the musical device is marvelous, but to witness Ravi’s greatness in person is remarkable.

I recently had the pleasure of attending a performance at the legendary Keystone Korner Baltimore, 1350 Lancaster Street, Baltimore, MD. The vibe was right, and the atmosphere was tight but once Mr. Ravi Coltrane appeared on stage, he took command of it from first note ‘til last. We, the audience simply held on for the ride.

He guided us on a journey of mostly his up-tempo and mid-tempo classics but also whisked the tour through several current pieces.

There was never a lull in the trip as the multi-talented Ravi switched back and forth from tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, and clarinet. Each song was distinctly different in sound and feeling than the next. Most with unique nuances that treated the ear to a sound that is unmistakably his own. With a last name synonymous with jazz royalty, Ravi Coltrane upholds his father’s crown, yet has carved his mark in this great art form and continues to push the envelope.

In contrast, John Coltrane also played several instruments such as the tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone flute, and bass clarinet. His mother, Alice Coltrane, played the piano, organ, and harp, and sang, proving that greatness is in his DNA. With residencies at Blue Note and Bird Land and numerous world tours under his belt, Ravi has definite staying power and is still one of the pillars of the business. Musician, Record Producer, and RKM Record Label Co-Owner, Ravi Coltrane was born in Long Island, NY August 6, 1965, and was raised in Los Angelos, California.

The son of music giants, John, and Alice Coltrane, he studied music at the California Institute of the Arts after graduating from El Camino Real High School. To date, he has played with many other greats such as McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders, Chick Corea, and Bradford Marsalis just to name a few.

His debut work, Moving Pictures, is several tracks of abstract magic and pure classics.

Each song is different from the previously played and audibly satisfying. Ravi’s latest contribution is Spirit Fiction, which challenges the listener to open their consciousness to what can be and beyond.

Kurtis Blow The [R]Evolution of Hip Hop podcast features special guest Kurtis Blow, The King of Rap. Interviewed by Popmaster Fabel, of the legendary dance group the Rock Steady Crew, Kurtis Blow talks about his career and the movement of the Universal Hip Hop Museum.

The Awesome Two Before Hip Hop became mainstream, there were only a few commercial stations that played Rap songs on air. In this two-part episode of the [R]Evolution of Hip Hop Podcast, the UHHM pays tribute to the legendary Awesome 2’s Special K, for being one of the first radio DJ’s to spin Rap songs on radio.

Ndaba Mandela Rocky Bucano, Executive Director of the Universal Hip Hop Museum, sits down with Ndaba Mandela to discuss the legacy of his grandfather, Nelson Mandela, and the release of his new book, Going to The Mountain.

THOMAS “FATS” WALLER ONE OF THE FUNNIEST JAZZ PIANISTS WHO EVER LIVED (MAY 21, 1904 ~ DECEMBER 15, 1943)

Born and raised in Harlem, Fats became one of the most well-paid African American entertainers of his era. He cut his teeth at rent parties — those shindigs given by Depressionera Harlemites who were behind in their rent and charged 25 cents admission in order to avoid eviction. One of his mentors, Willie “The Lion” Smith, helped him master the ‘Stride Style’ of performing, while another mentor — James Johnson — helped him perfect a more classical Stride Style of jazz.

He wrote and performed songs in a humorous style no one had seen before — ad-libbing double-entendres in the middle of the songs with a suggestive roll of his big expressive eyes — and in doing so became one of the wealthiest African-American entertainers of his time.

Most people don’t realize it — because of his comical persona — but Waller was one of the best jazz pianists of his time . . . and trained with classical greats like Carl Bohm and Leopold Godowsky.

He was also the first African American to write a non-Black musical for Broadway — ‘Early to Bed.’ In addition to composing, recording, playing vaudeville, doing club dates, and making numerous radio appearances he made several movies, but it was. the star-studded film ‘Stormy Weather’ for which he is best remembered.

After completing the movie Waller stayed in California for a while doing club dates, and it was while traveling by train from Los Angeles back to New York that he succumbed to pneumonia. His official place of death was listed as Kansas, Missouri as that is where his body was taken off the train.

More than 4,000 mourners crowded into Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem to pay tribute to their home-town musical genius. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. — a long-time friend who was presiding over the funeral — quipped, “He always played to a packed house.” In accordance with his wishes his body was cremated, and his ashes scattered over Harlem from a plane piloted by an African American World War I aviator.

Did you know that: •He was kidnapped, at gun point, by the Chicago mob and forced to play for a surprise party for Al Capone. Afterwards he was released, with thousands of dollars in his pocket.

BOOK OF THE MONTH BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Gospel of Hip Hop: First Instrument, the first book from the I Am Hip Hop, is the philosophical masterwork of KRS ONE. Set in the format of the Christian Bible, this 800plus-page opus is a life-guide manual for members of Hip Hop Kulture that combines classic philosophy with faith and practical knowledge for a fascinating, in-depth exploration of Hip Hop as a life path.

Known as "The Teacha," KRS ONE developed his unique outlook as a homeless teen in Brooklyn, New York, engaging his philosophy of self-creation to become one of the most respected emcees in Hip Hop history. Respected as Hip Hop's true steward, KRS ONE painstakingly details the development of the culture and the ways in which we, as "Hiphoppas," can and should preserve its future.

"The Teacha" also discusses the origination of Hip Hop Kulture and relays specific instances in history wherein one can discover the same spirit and ideas that are at the core of Hip Hop's current manifestation. He explains Hip Hop down to the actual meaning and linguistic history of the words "hip" and "hop," and

describes the ways in which "Hiphoppas" can change their current circumstances to create a future that incorporates Health, Love, Awareness, and Wealth (H-LAW).

Committed to fervently promoting selfreliance, dedicated study, peace, unity, and truth, The "Teacha" has drawn both criticism and worship from within and from outside of Hip Hop Kulture. In this beautifully written, inspiring book, KRS ONE shines the light of truth, from his own empirical research over a 14-year period, into the fascinating world of Hip Hop.

CHASING PURPOSE AN ARTISTIC JOURNEY A CONVERSATION WITH PHOENIX KABALI

Can you share with us a pivotal moment or experience that shaped your artistic path and influenced the direction of your music?

At the age of 17, I was about a year into my music journey. By this time in my life, I had been teaching kindergarten for 3 years now, and this was not a position I took lightly. Concurrently, I was also a victim of circumstance due to the impoverished conditions of my community environment. The gang and drug violence, lack of necessities, and the one-way ticket to the grave mentality of my peers, educators, and community elders (the old heads on the block)

left me in a stagnant state between broken promises and shattered dreams. At that age, I began to realize that I was becoming the very thing I was trying to survive in order to survive it. My entire existence up to this point was solely based on the need to survive. In this understanding, I then had to reflect on the example I was portraying to the very youth I educated. I was their peer, their educator, their old head, and their community elder. Outside of this classroom, I thrived in academia, yet I was barely alive trying to navigate the storm called life. Though my experience may not be one of riches or glory, it is a valuable and unique experience to learn

from. I was put into a position to cultivate the beginning stages of the next generation. Using my voice to communicate in one of the oldest and ancient forms of language, I decided that year I would use my music to do what I know how to do best…teach. To teach of the past so that the present may never see a future that feels familiar.

Your art often explores themes of identity and cultural heritage. How do you navigate these complex subjects, and what message do you aim to convey through your music?

As a black man born in the underbelly of America's past, my identity and cultural heritage have been lost. For this very reason, I find it undoubtedly one of the single most important factors in making a change in our communities.

Let me ask you, who are you? Now before you formulate a response to that question, think about that. Take away everything material, take away any outside influence of imagery and information.

Raw, vulnerable, open, authentically you. The majority of society knows not who they are, but rather who they are is determined by the external world alone. Through understanding our very cultural heritage, it gives us a foundation to stand on, instead of the one given to us by the very nation known for the oppression of its people and their cultural views.

It allows us to understand where we have been and understand how we have arrived at where we are now. Navigating through this process is no easy task. You can’t navigate through them.

You can only negotiate and accept the terms in which they present themselves within the lens of our individual life experiences. Accept who you were, love who you are, and cultivate who you want to be by learning from your mistakes and moving better tomorrow. Hold yourself

accountable for the negative actions just as strongly as you do your positive ones. Live authentically in your natural self and not the nature you’ve been given. My overall message is simply that…be who you genuinely are and love yourself while doing so through both the good and the bad. The world will beat you down more than enough. If you don’t uplift yourself…why would anyone else?

Could you describe your artistic process and the mediums you prefer to work with? How do you approach the creation of a new piece or series?

Naturally, as a poet, published author, and spoken word performer, writing is my desired medium. I’ve been writing and performing poetry for 22 years now, and it has become my strongest and most developed art form. While this is my desired medium, as a creative throughout my years, I began to gravitate towards other mediums as well. I found passion in different arts, and yet they all seem to connect back to one. Exploring music came into my life around 2008-2009. My very first recorded record was made in the fall of 2009. It felt conducive to my original craft as hip-hop is poetry. Lastly, photography has been a passion of mine since early childhood. From disposable cameras and Polaroid pictures to home videos, I was fascinated by the art of photography, specifically the idea of capturing memories. It wasn’t until the year of 2017 that I would have the chance to explore this medium. I got my start in fashion photography and from there, self-taught, worked endlessly to build it into the business it is today. Now, understanding I’ve spread my creativity amongst three art mediums, I have to approach every new creative endeavor with a specific thought in mind. How can this work in all three forms to become a single concept? My poetry becomes the verses to my music as my photography brings them to life!

I visualize my words to create visuals and verbs that can be seen by the external world through motion.

At first glance, they seem like individual puzzle pieces, but for me, they create the same bigger picture!

Almost anytime I get the chance to partner or collaborate with another artist or organization, I do. Yes, collaboration is our exchange of creative ideas, blended artistry of two individuals, and cooperation. It’s a little bit deeper than that for me. Collaborations foster a heavy sense of community. That’s the important part. We can come together from two or more separate worlds and different arts to align ourselves with a common goal. When an artist paints a mural on the wall in the coffee shop, the community benefits from that. The poet who performs at said coffee shop, the singer, rapper, musician, or comedian; will wield control of the atmosphere creating a special ambiance for the audience. That audience is our community. It allows us to see this colorful world outside of our lens of creativity. I’m a heavy advocate for community work, and art has always been the number one tool to foster that. Coming together artistically grows each of us, artists or not. You learn new ideas, new ways of thinking, new techniques, new and different experiences outside of your own, new things in familiar subjects, and new mediums.

There is always something to be learned from collaborating with another artist or organization, and I’m always open to such an experience!

Looking ahead, what are your future aspirations as an artist? Are there any upcoming projects or themes you are particularly excited about exploring?

To be completely honest, my only aspiration as an artist is to be able to use my art in such a manner that it uplifts and benefits my community more than anything else.

Anyone who has worked with me will tell you that. They’ve either seen it firsthand or have been on the receiving end. If we use our gifts and leave the very place that created us behind, what message are we sending to our youth? The next generation of artists will leave at the first chance they get. In what condition does that leave our homes? What about the neighbors who supported us before anyone else ever did, your friends, family, and the random people who live there…what about them? My main aspiration is to put myself in the best possible position I can begin to rebuild and uplift the community that I come from. My most recent project is a great example of that. During my urban exploration photography, I’ve been interviewing and capturing the very essence of Philadelphia’s street and underground art scene. There is a tremendous variety of talent in some of the most unknown yet well-known areas of the city’s nooks and crannies. Their stories of trial and triumph are just as captivating as the art they create from it. No news outlets or media influencers are walking around our neighborhood streets looking to highlight these beautiful souls. I am. I plan to use my platforms and networks to showcase “The Songs of The Shadows: Philly’s Underground Art Scene. This series will bring a spotlight to the unknown poets that shake the city with their voices, the musicians whose melodies soothe the soul of the city, and the artists who bring life through color and imagery to our very eyes.

Your work has resonated with a diverse audience and has been exhibited internationally.

How do you perceive the impact of your art on society, and what do you hope viewers take away from your creations?

My greatest fear about death is not that I won't die a great hero, not that I won't die after I lived out all my dreams, not that I won't die rich or famous or some great leader. My greatest fear is that I will die without making an everlasting impact that will change the world around me.

had on society is through the lens of the society I’m impacting. The students I’ve taught, what did they get from my teachings? As I taught writing for publication, I watched as the students became excited to engage in the creative writing process simply because they connected so heavily with their educator. A few of those students went on to become self-published authors themselves. I couldn’t have been more proud. My very art, no matter if it’s poetry, music, or photography, should be motivating, inspiring, and uplifting. I inspire and challenge writers to create books they never thought they could write, musicians to play pieces or in places, they never thought they would, and artists to create works that will take your very breath away. It’s not only humbling but also empowering to know my ideology and message of loving yourself, believing in yourself, and knowing that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to has reached not just my community but also communities around the world. I couldn’t ask for anything more than that.

Lastly, what advice would you give to emerging artists who are seeking to establish their voice and make a meaningful impact through their art?

No matter what your dreams or visions are, no matter if you are a master of your craft or thinking about becoming a beginner, you can achieve anything in this world you put your mind to. If you want something badly enough, you have to push yourself to limits you never thought you were capable of. You have to work harder and longer than anyone you know and meet. Nothing in life is handed to us besides death, so make the most out of your life by risking everything on your dreams and regretting nothing. We all will fail at least once, but do not let that get you down. Instead, work even harder than you did before to ensure that you will succeed. Anything is possible; you just have to make it happen. The fabric of your mentality weaves the fabric of your reality.

My adult children found the photos interesting and mildly amusing, like my "big hair" photos. Highly recommend.

IIMAG: How did you and your brother begin your musical journey?

RMR: My brother and I started making music in church when we were kids. I sang in the choir, and my brother played all the instruments.

CELEBRATING TRENDSETTERS: FIVE DECADES OF HIP-HOP HOP FASHION

Hey, hey hey closet crew! I have a question; when did you first fall in love with hip-hop?

Hip-Hop Fashion that is?

Ha, I've always wanted to open an article or interview with that question, ever since I saw Sydney Shaw aka Sanaa Lathan make it look so crazy sexy cool in Brown Sugar, one of my all-time favorite hip-hop movies.

As you see, this issue is dedicated to celebrating 50 years of hip-hop history and all that it encompasses. Fifty whole years and still shaping the culture. You guys know that I am a Hip-Hop head to my heart, and nothing says hip-hop more than fashion from the streets to the runway.

Hip-hop has continued to set the trends for fashion around the world. let’s get into it.

Urban Legend has it that Hip hop was started in 1973 By DJ Cool Herc in the Bronx. 1520 Sedgwick Avenue to be exact. There are a few conflicting stories, and legendary rap battles, about the true origins of Hip-Hop and who started it, however, we’re going to go with Herc in the Bronx. It was DJ Cool Herc and the groups spawned after who dictated Hip-Hop fashion during their respective times, and some of their fingerprints can still be seen today.

1970 - Rappers and groups such as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, took many flamboyant characteristics and mixed them with elements of Rock and roll, showing up in outlandish costumes making sure the crowd knew that they were the performers.

RUN DMC 1980- Def Jam ruled the music, and Run DMC influenced the nation, with the now iconic Adidas tracksuits. At the time Adidas was the first non-athletic sneaker endorsement deal of its kind.

It’s mind-blowing how those shell-toe Adidas tracksuits are still being rocked 40 years later. Now that’s what I call staying power. I would be remiss if I didn't also include the iconic Kangol Hat, which also became a staple of fashion in the 80s. Here is one of my real-life fashion Icons "Cozy" of Brooklyn. The picture was taken in 1982 and featured in the Source Magazine. Shout out to Cozy for always being a trendsetter.

There was also the conscious movement with rappers like Public Enemy and the X-Clan, in their AfroCentric military gear who would take center stage, giving us a sense of Black Pride, while encouraging us to Fight the Power! This was shown through not just their clothes, but their music. This era was yet another evolutionary step for Hip-Hop. 1990 — Depending on where you were from, this was the time when the accessories made their presence felt on the scene. Big chains were worn like medals of honors tracing back to ancient times when the best warriors and richest chiefs wore gaudy jewelry pieces to show off their statuses. The bigger the jewels, the flyer you were.

This is still true in the culture to this day.

Around this time a new sneaker had also hit the market; the Air Jordan. Seemingly overnight it went from a basketball to a leisure shoe, and the popular sneaker exploded onto the scene. Mainstream designers such as Tommy Hill figer and Ralph Lauren took notice of the buying power of the Black dollar and allowed Hip-Hop artists to freely advertise their merchandise, raking in trillions of dollars without having to spend a cent on marketing. Why should they when we were oh so willing to do it for them?

What they discovered was that we were setting the trends and they followed along, pulling in the profit from the buzz created by Hip-Hop.

YOUNG CHARLOTTE

Cross Colours, one of the first Blackowned hip-hop brands, began when its founder noticed young men wearing jeans four to five sizes too big. Visiting New York from California, Carl Jones realized he could cater to the demand for baggy denim. He started producing baggy jeans with smaller waists so that wearers could forego big belts. A size 36 would fit a 32 waist. Costume designers of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and “In Living Color” were eager to get their hands-on Cross Colours designs. Jones and his colleagues single-handedly changed the market for young men from fitted to baggy.

Black artists and celebrities like TLC, Snoop Dogg, Muhammad Ali, Jamie Foxx, Magic Johnson, and Stevie Wonder rep'd the brand. It made $100 million in its first four years.

Out of Cross Colours sprang a variety of hip-hop clothing brands, including FUBU, Sean John, Mecca, Parish Nation, and Karl Kani. FUBU (For Us By Us) worn by NSYNC and by LL Cool J in a Gap commercial, grossed $350 million in its first couple years of business despite its toil to land real estate in department stores until 1996.

2000's - Once Hip Hop proved its staying power and appeal to the masses it was clear that the culture was here to stay, and so was the fashion which blew the doors off of the industry. This gave artists like Sean Puff Daddy Combs and his Sean Jean brand free reign over the fashion industry. They ushered in the era of stylish leisure suits that would spread like wildfire through big stores and botiues alike.

In 2004, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) gave Sean John the Menswear Designer award.

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs was the first African American to receive this honor.

2010 - This was the era when the most controversial designers won the day.

Que Kanye West’s “Can’t Tell Me Nothing.” Say what you want about Ye, but he was the plug. Don’t believe me?

2020's. I can't really say who owns this decade because what's old is new and what's new is old. This article could have been a book, but I tried to condense it for the crew. However, I do need to mention how in the 1990s Gucci and other luxury designers were offended by Legendary Harlem Ateliere and Trendsetter Dapper Dan using their designs to create better designs, then fast forward 30 years later they give him a capsule, and finally acknowledged his brand and contributions to fashion. His brands took nothing from these big-name designers. In fact, he enhanced them.

He was the first barrier breaker and I’m happy to see him finally receive his flowers.

In closing, what I’ve learned, and hopefully summed up in this article is; HIP HOP Fashion allows us to truly be ourselves. From the baggy jean throwbacks of my era to the skinny jeans of this one; there is a space and a place for us all. I encourage you to continue to continue being unquestioningly YOU! As you know, Hip Hop, a cultural and musical movement that originated in the Bronx, New York, is celebrating its 50-year anniversary. From its humble beginnings in the 1970s, Hip Hop has evolved into a global phenomenon, influencing music, fashion, art, and society. In this article, we will delve into the rich history of Hip-Hop, highlighting the pioneers who paved the way and the past and present icons who have shaped the genre.

The Birth of Hip-Hop In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the South Bronx faced numerous challenges, including poverty, crime, and social unrest. Amidst these conditions, a cultural movement was brewing that would change the course of music forever. Hip Hop emerged as a creative outlet for young African American and Latino communities to express themselves, share their experiences, and escape the harsh realities of their surroundings.

Hip Hop's birth can be traced back to the block parties held in the Bronx. These gatherings brought people together, and DJs played music from various genres, including funk, soul, and disco. However, it was the instrumental breaks in these songs, known as breakbeats, that captivated the crowd and sparked a new form of musical expression.

As our Creative Director, and very good sis, Charlotte Young Foye said pages ago, one of the key figures in the birth of hip-hop was DJ Kool Herc, also known as Clive Campbell. Herc, a Jamaican immigrant, introduced a revolutionary technique that involved

using two turntables to extend the instrumental breaks of songs. By seamlessly transitioning between the two turntables, Herc created an uninterrupted stream of beats, allowing people to showcase their dance moves, a style known as "breakdancing."

The block parties soon became a breeding ground for not only DJs but also MCs (masters of ceremony) who would rhyme and rap over the beats laid down by the DJs. The fusion of DJing and MCing became the cornerstone of Hip Hop, with MCs improvising lyrics and engaging the crowd with their rhythmic delivery.

Pioneers of Hip Hop While DJ Kool Herc played a crucial role in shaping the sound of hip-hop, other pioneers also contributed significantly to the movement's early development. Grandmaster Flash, Joseph Saddler, was one such innovator who pushed the boundaries of DJing. Flash experimented with techniques like "cutting" and "scratching" vinyl records, manipulating the sounds in a way that added a dynamic and rhythmic element to the music.

Afrika Bambaataa, another influential figure, took the cultural aspect of Hip Hop to new heights. Bambaataa founded the Universal Zulu Nation, a collective that aimed to promote peace, unity, and social consciousness through Hip Hop. His efforts to use hip-hop as a tool for positive change resonated with many and solidified the movement's cultural significance.

These pioneers, among others, laid the foundation for hip-hop, creating a platform for aspiring artists to express themselves, share their stories, and provide a voice for their communities.

As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this revolutionary art form, it's impossible to ignore the pivotal role it has played in shaping music, fashion, language, and social activism. Over the decades, a multitude of artists have risen to prominence within the hip-hop landscape, each leaving their unique imprint on the genre. In this special edition of Intellectual Ink Magazine, we honor 20 hip-hop artists who have not only mastered their craft but have also significantly impacted the evolution of this dynamic culture.

You know, Run-D.M.C. really shook things up with those legendary Adidas tracksuits and that awesome mix of rock and rap. They basically redefined hip hop fashion and how different genres can come together. And let's talk about "Walk This Way" (featuring Aerosmith) – that game-changing collab not only gave Aerosmith a fresh boost but also opened up hip hop to a whole new crowd.

Man, Public Enemy really knew how to drop some truth bombs. Their lyrics packed a punch and their beats were like no other.

They weren't afraid to tackle the tough stuff – like systemic racism and inequality. You gotta talk about "Fight the Power," that track is pure gold. It's all about standing up, pushing back, and making a change. And remember it blasting in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing"? That song hit right at racism and oppression, and it screamed for everyone to join together and take action.

Oh, you can't talk about hip hop without giving props to Salt-N-Pepa!

These ladies were the real trailblazers, making waves and leaving their mark on music and pop culture. And come on, "Push It" is like their anthem. That track's got this crazy catchy hook and a beat that just sticks to you – I mean, it's been rocking parties for ages.

LL Cool J had it all – he wasn't just a rap star, he was like a heartthrob of hip hop.

He had that swag and charisma that could charm anyone, and you know what? That was just as important as his killer rhymes. And let's talk about "I Can't Live Without My Radio" – that was his debut single and it was fire. It was like the start of something big, you could feel his confidence shining through. And don't forget "Around the Way Girl" – that track was all about the everyday women from the block. Smooth vibes, relatable lyrics – it just clicked with everyone.

Tupac was more than just a rapper – he was like a poet of the streets, speaking truth that hit home for so many. He had this way of connecting with communities that were often overlooked, becoming this symbol of realness. You've got to talk about "Dear Mama" – that was him pouring his heart out for his mom. It's like he bared his soul in that track, you can practically feel the emotions.

And then there's "Keep Ya Head Up" – that song was like a hug for everyone listening. It was all about respect, standing up for women's rights, and never giving up. That message? It reached far and wide.

When it came to telling stories, the Notorious B.I.G. was like the master. He took that street life and showed the real, raw side of it – you know, the vulnerable stuff that usually stays hidden. Let's talk about "Juicy" – that track was like his anthem. He laid it all out, from his humble beginnings to becoming a hip hop king.

And then there's "Big Poppa" – smooth as silk and catchy as anything. Biggie's flow and storytelling were on full display there, just painting pictures with his words.

From rapper to mogul, Jay-Z's business acumen and lyrical dexterity propelled him to legendary status, shaping the genre's business landscape. . Check out "99 Problems" – that track's like a bold statement in his career. It's got this raw vibe and lyrics that just hit hard. And don't even get me started on "Big Pimpin'" – that's like the track that's always stuck in your head.

The beat's contagious, and Jay-Z's swagger?

It's all over it. Oh, and remember "Hard Knock Life? He took a classic from "Annie" and turned it into a mainstream hit – that's the genius right there.

Nas and his debut album "Illmatic" – that thing's like a gold standard for spitting lyrics. He painted pictures of New York's tough streets like nobody else. And check out "N.Y. State of Mind" – that's the first track on "Illmatic" and it's like Nas taking you on a tour of the city's neighborhoods through his words. And then there's "I Can" – that track's like a pep talk for the young ones, telling them to chase their dreams.

It's like Nas spreading positivity and inspiration through his music.

Lauryn Hill is a true all-rounder – she's got those powerhouse vocals and lyrics that really hit home. Now, when it comes to her hits, they're something else. Check out "Doo Wop (That Thing)" – it's like her signature tune that mixes R&B and hip hop in such a cool way, all while dropping wisdom about relationships. And then there's "Ex-Factor" – that track takes you on this emotional ride through heartbreak. Lauryn Hill's voice and the way she pours her feelings into it?

It's like a punch to the heart, man.

OutKast is like the dynamic duo of hip hop, with André 3000 and Big Boi bringing their own flavor to the game. They've got this mindblowing sound that's like hip hop, funk, and a whole lot more all mixed up. Check out "B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)" – that track's like a burst of energy, with verses firing off like crazy. OutKast is all about pushing boundaries. And don't miss "The Way You Move" – it's part of their album "Speakerboxxx/The Love Below." Big Boi's flow is so smooth, and that song? It's like a charttopper that you just can't stop grooving to.

DMX was one of a kind – a rapper who poured his heart and soul into every word, and man, did it show. His hits are like this force that's shaped hip hop. First up, you've got "Ruff Ryders' Anthem" – that track's like his signature jam, packed with his raw energy and grit. It's like a call to arms for his crew. And then there's "Party Up (Up in Here)" – that song's like the ultimate party starter, with a chorus that you just can't get out of your head. DMX knew how to make tracks that hit you right in the gut and the dance floor.

Kanye West is like a creative genius who's changed the game with his music and lyrics that really make you think. His hits? They've basically reshaped the whole hip hop and music scene. Let's start with "Gold Digger" – that track's a total chart-topper. Kanye's got Jamie Foxx on board and together, they're taking on materialism and shady relationships. "Heartless" – that one's all about experimenting with sound. Kanye's using auto-tune like a boss, and the lyrics?

They're like a glimpse into his thoughts.

J. Cole is all about telling stories and making us think through his music, which is why he's such a heavyweight in today's hip hop scene.

First off, you've got "No Role Modelz" – that track's straight from his "2014 Forest Hills Drive" album. He's dishing on relationships and his personal growth journey. Then there's "Middle Child" – that one's got this killer hook that sticks in your head, and the flow? It's like J. Cole's claiming his spot in hip hop. And we can't forget "Neighbors" – it's off his "4 Your Eyez Only" album, and he's putting a spotlight on racial profiling and the bigger problems we face. J. Cole's music is like a mirror to society, reflecting what's real.

Kendrick Lamar's hits are like a masterclass in intricate storytelling and double entendres – that's why he's a big name in today's hip hop game. First up, there's "HUMBLE." – that track's all about keeping it real with its straightforward production and confident verses. It's like a double whammy of cultural impact and commercial success. Then there's "DNA." – it's got this energy that's off the charts.

Kendrick's rhymes hit hard, and the delivery. It's like he's on a mission to make his mark.

Eminem's music is like a punch to the gut – he's brutally honest about his struggles and tackles all those controversial topics head-on. It's like he's here to shake things up. Remember "My Name Is"? That was his big breakthrough – he introduced his crazy style and humor to a whole new crowd. And then there's "Lose Yourself" – man, it's got these lyrics that just hit you in the motivation feels, and his delivery?

It's like he's spitting fire. Oh, and "Stan" – that's a whole different level. He's weaving this story about an obsessed fan, and the way he tells it.

He puts you right there in the scene.

Nicki Minaj's alter egos and dynamic flow showcased her versatility, while her unapologetic feminism inspired a new generation of female hip hop artists. "Super Bass": This catchy track showcases Nicki Minaj's ability to craft radio-friendly hits.

"Chun-Li": Named after the iconic video game character, "Chun-Li" features Nicki's confident flow and bravado. "Feeling Myself" (featuring Beyoncé): A powerful collaboration with Beyoncé, "Feeling Myself" exudes confidence.

Missy Elliott didn't just make music, she redefined it with visuals that pushed boundaries and a sound that was like nothing else. "Get Ur Freak On" – showing off her visionary status with its crazy production and rhythm. And "Work It" lyrics are playful with that iconic backwards chorus. It's like her calling card. Now, "Lose Control" – that's like a whole different vibe. She's teaming up with Ciara and Fatman Scoop and blending hip hop with electronic dance music like a pro. Missy Elliott's music breaks molds and makes waves.

Megan Thee Stallion is all about owning who she is – her sexuality and body positivity are like a rallying cry for a whole new generation of women. She's showing that hip hop is a platform for female empowerment like never before. Now, "Body" – that track's like an anthem for loving yourself and embracing your body. Megan's flow is like fire in that one. And "Savage" is practically a worldwide phenomenon. With that catchy "classy, bougie, ratchet" chorus, she's leaving her mark for sure.

The music that would come to be known as hiphop was born at a party in the Bronx in the summer of 1973. Now, fifty years later, it’s the most popular music genre in America. INK MAG: When did you first recognize yourself as a writer?

And what was the driving force behind crafting "Change The Game" and opening up about your journey of overcoming adversity?

TMJ: Thank you for having me. Writing has been an integral part of my identity for as long as I can remember. From the early days, I had a passion for writing, which began with short stories and music. However, it was during my time incarcerated that I truly grasped the power of writing as a potential pathway to change my circumstances. I saw writing as a way out!

The inspiration for "Change The Game" struck me after my second book was published. During a trunk show, a curious reader asked about my story. That was when I realized the significance of my own journey and what it took to reach where I stand today. While I didn't immediately start writing the book, that initial spark planted the seed.

INK MAG: Your journey from incarceration to authorship is quite a transformation. Can you provide insight into the obstacles and setbacks you faced along this transformative path, as highlighted in your upcoming memoir?

TMJ: Certainly. Before embarking on "Change The Game," I believed that external factors like authority figures and the streets were responsible for holding me back. Blaming others for my challenges was my default stance. Yet, during the nine months I spent writing the memoir, I came to realize that the biggest hurdle in my life was none other than myself. Once I conquered this self-imposed obstacle and gained clarity on my goals, I found the path to flourish.

INK MAG: Your journey of self-discovery is profound. How do you anticipate "Change The Game" resonating with readers who yearn for a fresh start and are seeking guidance to break free from their past?

TMJ: I believe "Change The Game" will deeply resonate with those seeking a fresh start because it's a raw testimony of my real-life experiences. INK MAG: When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

LRW: I’ve always been a bookworm. As a child, having a book in my face was a very normal thing, as I was very shy back then (imagine that now lol!) Reading The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, and Sweet Valley High made me realize I wasn’t seeing myself in these books. The two books that sealed the deal were “Secrets” by Danielle Steel and “Hollywood Wives” by Jackie Collins. It was then I knew I wanted to write drama, my way.

INK MAG: When did you write your first book and how old were you?

LRW: Age thirteen had my life in a tailspin.

Relocating from New York to Virginia is when I poured my energy into “A Fantasy of Love” and

it allowed me to flex my teenage aggressions in silence. The original draft was 565 pages; let’s just say not all of that made it to publication.

How long does it take you to write a book?

LRW: If it’s a full-length novel, I allow a year.

When I pen a short story, six months is usually sufficient, however, I always leave room for life to occur as the story develops.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

LRW: YouTube playlists have become very useful when I am writing. Most of my writing is done after my full-time job and on weekends. I put my cell phone out of reach and silence notifications to remain focused.

I also make soundtracks if the storyline inspires me, or the characters call for it.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

LRW: I use very original and unique names that most find challenging to pronounce. For me, it’s a conversation starter; I prefer it as such.

Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

LRW: Research, observation and some are reallife experiences. I enjoy diverse roles for my characters.

INK MAG: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

LRW: Attending live concerts, shopping,

watching movies, spending quality time with my family, writing poetry, and long days at the beach make me very happy.

INK MAG: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

LRW: Learning how freeing it is to open my mind and allow the characters to speak on their terms without fear still amazes me. The bolder they are, the better I write.

INK MAG: How many books have you written?

Which is your favorite?

LRW: To date, I have twenty-seven books in my library, some are series, some are short stories, and a couple of anthologies in the collection.

They’re all my favorites for various moments and reasons in my life; I’ll never pick one over another.

LRW: Take a creative writing class; no matter what is taught, structure is important. Listen to your inner voice when writing. Learn how to self-publish; writing is a business and these days, you don’t get to hide behind the words and pretend the other side doesn’t exist. Find three reputable editors and learn what kind of editing you’ll need to strengthen your writing for the long term. Attend book festivals, learn observe and ask questions to established authors and publishers. Be involved in the environment you wish to thrive in.

Morning meditation and early walks became cornerstones of my routine. They provided a sense of grounding and set a positive tone for the day. Additionally, joining an aerobics dance team was a bold step that pushed me out of my comfort zone.

Engaging in these activities left no room for negativity and played a significant role in nurturing my positive mental attitude. **Interviewer:** Entrepreneurship can indeed be a solitary path. You mentioned realizing the importance of going it alone.

Could you share the moment or realization that led you to this decision? And how has this choice impacted your journey? **Lytheia:** The realization that I needed to venture alone was a turning point. I started my entrepreneurial journey with partners, but circumstances led them to step away. I had to decide between halting my journey or pressing on. I chose the latter. It was a pivotal moment that made me understand the true meaning of dedication. Going it alone has been both challenging and rewarding, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

The Truly Remarkable Tale of Robert Smalls: Father, Trailblazer, Gangsta!

BY KAREN E. QUINONES MILLER Oh, you think you're gangsta? Let me tell you about someone who's truly gangsta!

On May 13, 1861 -- 162 years ago -- a Union Navy captain saw a Confederate warship heading directly toward them.

However, before he could order his sailors to open fire, he realized the ship was being steered by a Black man, with other Blacks on the ship's deck waving.

At the age of 22, Robert Smalls, a slave, did something truly astonishing: he commandeered (yes, stole!) a Confederate boat, loaded it up with 22 family and friends, and sailed past 5 heavily guarded Southern ports to deliver the ship into Union hands and secure his people's freedom. Did I mention he was only 22?

NOW THAT'S GANGSTA! Robert Smalls was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, on April 5, 1839. When he was 12, his master, John K. McKee, sent him to Charleston and hired him out as a waiter, then as a ship rigger and a sailor. Despite not being able to read or write (as slaves were forbidden by law from being educated), he showed remarkable intelligence, fast learning, and an extraordinary memory. The young boy developed a liking for sea life.

At the age of 17, Smalls married Hannah Jones, who had a daughter from a previous relationship. Now in high demand at the Charleston seaport, when he turned 18, he managed to convince his master to allow him to keep a portion of his weekly wages.

While the master took $15 of his salary, Smalls was allowed to keep $1. His proud goal was to purchase his family's freedom.

However, in April 1861, Hannah informed him of her pregnancy. According to the law, a child's status depended on the mother's condition. Smalls understood that if Hannah gave birth while enslaved, their child would also be enslaved. But if Hannah were a free woman, their child would also be free.

Without revealing Hannah's pregnancy, Smalls urgently approached their owner and asked to buy her freedom. He reasoned that he could later buy his and his stepdaughter's freedom, but the priority was ensuring his child's freedom. The owner agreed on a price of $800, which Smalls had managed to save.

In the early hours of May 13th, while the white crewmen and three officers of the Planter disembarked to enjoy Charleston's nightlife, Smalls seized the moment. He loaded the ship with his pregnant wife, child, and the families of eight enslaved ship crewmen who joined him in escape.

Disguised in a captain's uniform and a straw hat resembling the ship's real captain, Charles Relyea, Smalls sailed the ship away from Charleston port and out to sea.

Upon boarding the stolen Confederate ship, the Union ship's captain Capt. John Nickels was met by Smalls, who requested a United States flag to hoist. In addition to the newly freed slaves, Smalls brought light guns, artillery, and 200 pounds (pounds! Not rounds!) of ammunition on board. What proved even more valuable was the captain's code book, containing Confederate signals and naval mine locations. Thanks to Smalls' incredible memory, he informed Nickels of Confederate war plans discussed in his presence, even though he was considered a lowly slave.

As a free man, Smalls collaborated with the Union Navy in their battle against the South. In 1863, he piloted the newly refurbished Planter and successfully steered it to safety during heavy Confederate fire. This courageous act led to his promotion to acting Captain of the Planter. Smalls also earned rewards, both monetary and in the form of accolades from Northern newspapers, for capturing Southern ships and aiding the Union cause.

In April 1862, Smalls used his earnings to buy a home in Beaufort, SC, for his mother. Ironically, the house was originally owned by his former master.

This chapter of Smalls' incredible life demonstrates that true bravery and determination can reshape destinies. So, tell me, is that not the epitome of gangsta?

The story of Robert Smalls stands as a testament to human resilience and audacity. Born into slavery, he emerged as a courageous leader who navigated perilous waters, secured freedom for his people and played a pivotal role in shaping history. His legacy endures, reminding us that greatness knows no boundaries. Now, that's what I call gangsta!

This book provides some insight into the man himself, his struggles, and his story.

Although I enjoyed it, I felt the story was rushed. I felt like there was an urgency for completion. Just my overall feeling.

However another collector's item.

BLACK MEN AND MENTAL HEALTH WHAT THE “EFF” IS GOING ON?

I remember the day, June 1st, 2013. It was the day my friend shot and killed himself. It was a traumatizing experience for me, fuckin’ surreal. I couldn’t believe someone I grew up with and who’d become my brother would take his own life. A decade later, I still wonder why my friend would commit suicide. It’s haunted me because his family and I will never know why, and I wonder what happened to drive him to that point. But my friend had his ups and downs in life, and like so many black men today, me included, we like to keep things in—keep our feelings and emotions guarded tighter than security at the White House and not talk about it.

Everything is always okay with us, the Black man, until it is not okay, and we break, snap like a twig; can’t take this shit anymore, and the consequences become severe. So to talk about it, mental health is like kryptonite in the black community. We choose to believe it doesn’t exist; black people don’t kill themselves. We’re strong and will continue to be strong no matter what because we’ve been through a lot and can handle whatever life throws at us. However, to be a Black man in American society is to be forced to deal with daily psychological stress. For most of us, seeking therapy is like seeing a unicorn; it doesn’t exist.

Instead, we’re taught God will work it out, to pray about it and find peace. But what happens when that peace doesn’t come?

Deep sigh!

To be a man, and a black man at that in this country, and to grow up in the hood or ghetto, we were taught and learned not to be no punk. Always be a man and stand your ground. We don’t cry. Shit, only sissies and babies cry. You fight for what you want.

And if you suffer from physical or emotional pain or trauma, you shake it off and get tough—if not, you’ll be eaten alive by the wolves. Growing up in the black community, to acknowledge pain or to show any emotions, you were subjected to bullying or ridicule and considered soft and weak. I was never taught how to express my feelings by my father. He was there for me, and he taught me many things in life, including how to be a man and how a man should take care of his family. But the one thing my father never taught me was how to express myself and handle my emotions. Maybe because his father, my grandfather, never taught him.

Growing up, I've learned how to suppress my emotions and substitute them by playing sports, lifting weights, getting into fights, and becoming a ladies' man. It was escapism from the troubles. A girl breaks your heart; you're taught to get over it quickly, "fuck that bitch” excuse my language. You get cut from a team, get over it, and try another sport. High school or your life is becoming rough; figure it out.

You're hurt, walk that shit off; it'll be alright. If something got you sad or bothered, let's party and get a drink and become drunk. You'll feel better tomorrow. The one thing I've learned growing up in the hood is that the black man can't look or become vulnerable. To acknowledge vulnerability in a society that preys on any perceived weakness can feel like opening yourself up to attack from enemies out to destroy you. But there's a physical and psychological cost to suppressing your emotions.

You'll begin to self-destruct inside and implement self-harm or self-medication via drugs, sex, violence, or alcohol. You begin to feel trapped and angry and fall into depression. Why? Because you're suffering in silence and were taught, that male expression of emotions should be reserved for certain things like the death of your mother or family member or the birth of your child. So, we wrestle with our feelings and suffer in silence until one day, we get that phone call in the middle of the night with the news of a friend committing suicide.

Mental health is an essential issue in the black community. It’s real, and so many black men suffer in silence. According to the Mental Health America website, 16% (4.8 million) of Black and African American people reported having a mental illness, and 22.4% of those (1.1 million people) reported a severe mental illness over the past year. With Mental health in the black community, we can’t keep treating it like a fairytale—a unicorn, alien, or bigfoot being some myth. We need to start acknowledging the issues with mental health, self-isolation, and selfdestruction, including myself. I’ve had my share of traumatizing experiences and even thought about suicide occasionally. I felt trapped and depressed. I felt there was no outlet for me, no one to talk to. So, I guarded my emotions and would cry alone. I often thought it would be weak for me to talk about it. Men don’t express their feelings.

I’m a strong black man, I believed. But soon, you’ll find yourself spiraling down this pit of depression, doubt, seclusion, and anger.

The trouble with being a Strong Black Man is that we are forced to deal with daily psychological stress. There’s the police, black-on-black violence, institutionalized racism, child support, unemployment, and economic instability, among so many other things that can dehumanize us as a people. And that can do a number on a man’s mental state.

Unfortunately, I not only lost one, but two friends to suicide in the past twenty years.

We not only need to pray about things, but we also need to act to protect our mental health.

That means acknowledging our pain and showing our emotions, then finding a secure and trustworthy outlet or a support group to express ourselves, even if it’s therapy. We, as Black men, need to stop being cool, hiding our pain, and appearing to be in control of our emotions no matter the circumstances. So if you need help, reach out. Please. Because prayers without works are dead.

And that’s what the “Eff” is going on!
