The Integral LED design team will make sure your space meets industry regulations for lighting levels across the appropriate surface, such as floor, desk and shelving.

Case Study: Table tennis club qualifies for competition with an upgrade to Spacelux

B

etter lighting improves lives and, in some cases, can boost a whole community. When a regional table tennis club decided to enter the big league, they needed LED to help them step up. A club that had been founded to encourage physical activity among local young people now set its sights on the national tournament circuit. This has been achieved with help from Integral LED ‘Spacelux’ High Bay luminaires.

From a modest start and only three tables, the WDHA club was open to all ages and skill levels from the surrounding streets of Wellingborough. Based at the community leisure centre, the small group captured the spirit of ‘sport for all’. Table tennis is renowned for its low impact yet effective cardiovascular exercise and soon members from five to 80 years old were enjoying this accessible and enjoyable pastime.

As the WDHA club grew to the 20-table club it is today, a rising tide of talent passed through the coaching sessions.

Accomplished County level players were spotted and the club’s success in the regional table tennis leagues began to rise. Ultimately, only the facilities were holding the organisation back from hosting more prestigious tournaments and improving its reputation even more. A lighting survey confirmed the inadequacy of the double fluorescent tube fittings in place within the hall. The

196 lux produced by the legacy scheme fell short of the 400 lux that was required for top competition.

Integral LED proposed the improvement to the lighting scheme and an upgrade to meet the needs of top-flight table tennis. The secondary goal was to secure the higher level of illumination without increasing the running costs or wattage to power the scheme. For this project, Spacelux was specified as the ideal solution. Weighing under 4kg, the high bay luminaire is an excellent choice for refits within legacy infrastructure. Producing 20,960lm at 131Lm/W, it was calculated that 37 Spacelux units were more than sufficient to meet the light levels and conserve the club’s budget. Additionally, the Spacelux’s 110-degree wide beam angle was key to creating a uniform pool of light across the playing area and to bounce illumination off the walls to cover corners and edges. Lastly, the luminaire’s highly effective diffusion was ideal to suppress any undesirable glare in player vision.

The response to the new lighting scheme was immediate and extremely favourable.

The lighting levels were instantly raised to 800 Lux at table level, doubling the qualifying standard. Players reported better visibility with the ball in play. Most

club members and visitors were in awe of the change – a spontaneous WOW! The following season the facility attracted major regional and national events and has earned many compliments from top coaches within the sport.

ECA

Enhanced Capital Allowance Many Integral LED luminaires meet or exceed the requirements for Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA). Our brochure uses the following logo to indicate compatible luminaires in our range.

ECA

ECAs are a straightforward way for a business to improve its cash flow through accelerated tax relief.

The scheme encourages businesses to invest in energy-saving equipment to help reduce carbon emissions, which contribute to climate change. LED lighting qualifies for funding. Customers can obtain a statement from Integral LED that states that the product supplied for your project, meets the eligibility criteria in force at the time of purchase. This can then form the basis of the supporting evidence for the tax claim.

An ECA is claimed through a company's income or corporation tax return in the same way as any other capital allowance. HMRC is responsible for the tax-related aspects of the ECA scheme. Buying energy efficient equipment results in a lower overall spend on energy, improving cash flow and lowering overheads. This can be a very attractive proposition as energy use is often the second highest cost after staff salaries, and for some energy intensive industries, it can be the highest operational cost.
