SELECTING THE RIGHT GRIPS AND JAW FACES

Selecting the best gripping solution has a number of aspects to it. In particular, the specimen must be held in a way that prevents slippage and jaw breaks, and ensures axiality of the applied force. However, there are other considerations, such as productivity and ease of use, that may make one design better suited to your needs. In the case of some test types, the gripping requirements are very specific and a purpose-designed grip or fixture may be available. Such grips and fixtures are often designed to meet a particular testing standard, making selection very straightforward.

For a great many tests, however, you can use general purpose accessories. General purpose grips and fixtures have the advantage of being able to grip a wide variety of specimen types and materials using a range of options such as different jaw faces, alignment fixtures, etc. Choosing the correct grip and options available for your application is more involved because of the variety available. The application suitability of Instron® accessories is covered in the introduction page of each accessory section in this catalog, and also in the various datasheets and brochures relating to specific products. The following pages summarize the advantages of different types of general-purpose grips and fixtures so you can identify the most appropriate type for your application. Please refer to specific product sections and datasheets for more detailed information concerning specific grip types.
