EXTENSOMETERS

The precise measurement or control of specimen deformation is a fundamental requirement in many materials tests. The use of crosshead or actuator movement to derive specimen deformation is often employed, but accuracy is limited by external influences such as system compliance and specimen deformation outside the nominal gauge length (in the tab ends for example).

Extensometry provides a direct and accurate method for measuring and controlling specimen deformation by monitoring strain over a precisely defined gauge length.

Instron® extensometry range includes many different types of extensometers to suit various specimens and applications. Each one is designed to provide the best possible accuracy. Instron has designed many custom extensometers and will discuss your extensometry requirements should you be unable to find a suitable device in the following pages.
