"Toujours plus vite, toujours plus haut, toujours plus loin" c'est la devise qui domine l'existence du héros de ce roman, Bálint Őze, coureur hongrois de classe internationale. Un jour, on retrouve dans la montagne le corps de l'athlète, mort au cours d'un entraînement solitaire. Accident ou suicide ? Même sa compagne qui rassemble ses souvenirs pour faire un "portrait" du disparu ne le saura pas. Elle nous fera revivre l'adolescence de Bálint, l'étrange vie du "quintette à vélo" - une bande de quatre garçons et d'une fille, sportive fanatique, qui, par ses défis sexuels, provoquera la fin de cette amitié à la veille de la guerre -, l'entraînement de plus en plus intensif du héros qui s'en suit, et sa solitude grandissante, dans l'univers socialiste qui a fait de lui une figure mythologique.
