FROM MY HEART TO YOURS - THE PUBLISHER’S NOTE -

Embracing Resilience and Radiance: A Year in Review with Inspiring You Magazine All of us at Inspiring You Magazine have had quite a year! I still have to take a moment every now and then and smile. It blows me away when I think about what we’ve accomplished! There have been quite a few hiccups along the way; however, we kept going because we never lost sight of how powerful our message was. On top of that, we were having fun! I shared my vision to publish a magazine with someone very dear to me. Their response was, “That’s ambitious!” You know what? It was, it is, and it’s right up my alley because so am I. Always have been and always will be. Every contributor who was part of this journey and shared their expertise will always have a very special place in my heart. There’s no way I could’ve done this alone, and I know that the best is yet to come. The first year of anything, personally or professionally, is always the most challenging. It feels so good to have that done and done well. We’re growing, and our readers really love what we’re doing. We’ve added new contributors, and I know you’ll love their perspective and voice as well. As 2023 comes to an end, choose to remember the good things, all of your accomplishments, and focus on the things in your life that went well. It’s more than okay to show you some grace and to others as well. Refuse to let anyone or anything dim your light. Remember that you’re more than enough, and you’re a lot tougher than you think! We’ll be right here, waiting to inspire you, because that’s who we are and what we do.

Light, Love & Inspiration,

Ken Johnson Kelly Valentine Jones Hi! My name is Kelly Jones. I am married to a wonderful man that I do not deserve. We just celebrated 29 years together, and there’s nowhere else I would rather be than by his side! We have two gorgeous grown daughters, one son-inlaw (almost two!), and a precious grandbaby boy - we love watching their stories unfold. Currently I am learning all the things about parenting adult children (it’s harder and more wonderful than I ever dreamed) and about being a new grandmama to the most joyful baby on the planet. I am a pastor’s wife, a former Registered Nurse, and I recently left the classroom after 17 years in public education. I loved teaching high school, but it was time for the next chapter of my own story. Stick around to see what’s next!

REFLECT, REJOICE, RESET:

A LOOK BACK AT 2023 AND WELCOMING 2024 WITH POSITIVITY

W

HAT KIND OF YEAR HAVE YOU HAD? Can you sit quietly for a while and recount the events of this year—and discover all the blessings bestowed on you, despite any bumps in the road? (just temporary distractions or lessons to be learned!) Don’t beat yourself up for what you didn’t ‘tick off your list’, be proud of your accomplishments, however large or small, happy for any avoided disasters, thankful for your health, and look into 2024 with a big smile and feeling of satisfaction. WHAT WORDS WOULD YOU USE TO DESCRIBE YOUR YEAR? Amazing, Challenging, Hopeful, Healthy, Fun, Energetic, Sad, Exciting, Overwhelming, Helpless, Slow, Wanderlust, Educational, Spiritual, Accomplished, all of the above, or a mixture of many... I hope you will automatically focus on the good things! Pondering over what went wrong will not be productive. One of the greatest lessons

INSPIRED LIFESTYLES

I’ve learned is to think positively. Some things New York Times best-selling author, motivational speaker, metaphysical teacher, and entrepreneur Mike Dooley has taught me are: ‘’Thoughts Become Things” (keep ‘em positive), “What You Think About You Bring About” (dream big), and “Acts of Kindness, however small, plant seeds of hope, love, and beauty.” (Be kind with your words and deeds.) Remember to focus on the positive and make light of the negative by trying to see the lesson learned from the experience. Did you have an unexpected bump-inthe-road? Pat yourself on the back for working through it. Even if you feel like you didn’t get much done on your wish list for 2023, take a look at what you did accomplish, and you might find you’ve had a smashing year! Go ahead; take out a pen and paper and write them down. • Faithfully added one needed regimen to my skincare routine • Took more time for myself- I’m no help to others if I’m not at my best • Included travel and vacation time with friends and family • Gave thanks often - especially for the little blessings • Being in service to others in any small way possible - maybe it’s just sharing a

smile Created new family priorities Slowed down to ‘smell the roses’ New job or desired position Made healthier lifestyle choices Traveled more - moved outside my comfort zone - see the world with a new perspective Lessons learned - by choice or chance Graciously accepted a compliment ... instead of saying ‘Oh this old thing’, you say ‘Thank you, how kind of you to notice’. Gave compliments honestly and sincerely Ate more slowly Turned off your phone daily for some REAL quite time Laughed more often

Now, let out a huge sigh and say, “It really was a great year.” Cheers to ringing in 2024, which will be even better! As the holidays and new year approach, be thankful for what you’ve accomplished, especially the small things that are often overlooked; they can be the most important as you continue your journey into the new year. Keep your thoughts positive. Thoughts and words can heal; let’s heal the world!

find your

& CLIMB IT

By Ken Johnson, M.A., LPC

Founder & CEO, East West Psychotherapy Associates Marietta, GA

T

he path of life is never smooth. It’s filled with ups and downs, potholes, speedbumps, and the like. Life isn’t supposed to be smooth or easy. It’s supposed to be experienced with all its twists and turns. So many people look for the path of least resistance. They look for the easy way out of any of life’s difficulties. By doing so, they miss the opportunity to be challenged, to improve, and to grow. Adversity is what makes us stronger. We learn from our mistakes. This year is coming to a close. It’s a great time to review what has been accomplished. What were our successes? What were your failures? What challenges did you face? What did you overcome? What remains to be completed? What do you take with you into the new year? What do you leave behind? When we examine our lives, we see it is far from easy. The road is never smooth. There is so much ahead of us. The new year is bright with anticipation for what is ahead. Looking ahead to the next year, I see the promise of new challenges. Some of the challenges will be exciting.

INSPIRED FAITH

Some of the challenges will be downright scary. I ask myself, “What if I fail? What if I don’t come in first?” Failure can be frightening and debilitating. The fear of failure can keep us from ever taking the first step. The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu is quoted as saying, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” We don’t need to be concerned about the long journey; we just need to take one step, then another, and then another. Coming in first need not be our goal. We just need to finish. We need to complete the race. The Apostle Paul writes in Philippians 3:13– 14, “Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal of winning the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Looking ahead to new challenges often requires us to let go of the things from our past that hold us back. We must acknowledge our past mistakes before God and leave them at Jesus’ feet. We can then move forward with confidence that we have been forgiven. As you look at the new year, consider what improvements you would like to make. What new opportunities would you take up? What new activities would you like to try? Is God moving you to try something new? Will you be pushed beyond your own personal limits and be required to trust

PAGE 13

God with the outcomes? This is the way we grow. When we realize we can’t reach our goals alone, we must trust God for help and strength. When we do, we have the power to grow and to finish the race. We can climb that mountain before us. Don’t be content to take the easy road. Challenge yourself in the new year to try something new. Try something you’ve never done before. Sure, it might be scary, but in the end, it will be worth it. In Robert Frost’s famous poem, he writes, “Two roads diverge in a wood, and 1-1 took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” Choosing a path, taking the first step, and finishing the race all require a decision to act. Nothing happens when you do nothing. This is the time to act. It’s time to do something new and challenging. I challenge you to FIND YOUR MOUNTAIN AND CLIMB IT!

HEALTHY MATTERS: WANT TO 10X RESULTS? THE POWER ACCOUNTABILITY DELIVERS

T

his is a truth that we know well, right? But is this what we do? I pray so, my friends. I pray that this is true for you. 2023 has been the year of intentional accountability for me, and let me tell you, it has not come without cost. About a month ago, I participated in a two-week-long Step Challenge with 67 other teams. The challenge was for both team partners to complete a minimum of 1OK steps per day. Sounds simple enough, yes? Here are words you can live by: Choose your partner wisely! Friends, my partner was Kay, a dear, lifelong companion. I know her well. What I did not know was how wildly competitive she was! She was, and is, an absolute force to be reckoned with. Let me just say Kay logged the lion’s share of our steps, and because of her indomitable spirit, we ended the challenge as 7th out of the 67 teams, and both Kay and I are in our 60s, logging 426,251 steps in just two weeks!

TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE, BECAUSE THEY HAVE A GOOD RETURN FOR THEIR LABOR: IF EITHER OF THEM FALLS DOWN, ONE CAN HELP THE OTHER UP. BUT PITY ANYONE WHO FALLS AND HAS NO ONE TO HELP THEM UP. ECCLESIASTES 4: 9-19

Now, I have my own fair share of competitive spirit as well, and I was determined not to let Kay down but to uphold and (most days) exceed my end of the bargain. Here’s what I learned: My commitment to the “Save Steps Society” runs deep, harkening back to my years as a floor nurse in a trauma center where steps literally saved lives. I found myself parking in the south forty of Target and Publix on the reg, going way against my nature of circling the lot, searching for the nearest available space to park my car. I was putting my laundry away one item at a time, deliberately adding steps to my daily chores at home. I was logging hours on our local Greenbelt, walking my dog (who loved every minute of my increased activity level!). All of this ran against my nature of minimizing effort and maximizing efficiency. So, why take these extra steps? I promise you it was not to “win. It was because of the power of accountability. I knew I would be reporting to Kay daily for the duration of this step challenge. And I was not going to let her down! So, as we explore this superpower of accountability together, let’s consider that when pursuing a healthier lifestyle, having a dedicated accountability partner by your side can be the missing piece that propels you toward success. Simply being a part of a supportive community can significantly amplify your ability to achieve your goals.

INSPIRED HEALTH

The Motivation Powerhouse An accountability partner is someone who shares your commitment to improving your physical health and overall well-being. This shared goal forms the foundation of a partnership that is mutually beneficial! Kay and I locked arms to accomplish something neither one of us could have done alone. One of the most potent influences an accountability partner brings is extrinsic motivation (not part of the essential nature of someone or something). Knowing that someone is rooting for your success, tracking your progress, and sharing your triumphs and setbacks can ignite a sense of responsibility. This responsibility, in turn, fuels your determination to stay on course, even when faced with challenges like rainy days or, in our case, creaky knees and hips! However, motivation isn’t a one-size-fits-all concept. Two primary types of motivation drive individuals on their wellness journey: extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. While “extrinsic” motivation, fostered by accountability partnerships, originates from external sources like rewards and recognition, “intrinsic “motivation stems from an internal desire to make positive changes for oneself. A supportive community can play a pivotal role in nurturing both types of motivation.

Emotional Support: The Pillar of Resilience Your wellness journey isn’t solely about physical health. Your emotional well-being also plays a vital role. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable, and during these moments, having a solid support system is crucial. Accountability partners and community members provide a safe space to express your concerns, share your triumphs, and find solace in knowing you’re not alone in your struggles. I promise you, without my accountability to my dear partner, I would never have pushed myself as hard as I did during those two weeks—and did I mention that our activity levels have remained almost as high as they were during the duration of that step challenge? Emotional support from your community fosters resilience, enabling you to bounce back from setbacks and maintain momentum. Setbacks are a natural part of the journey, and each step is a stride toward your goal, no matter how small.

Constructive feedback and continuous improvement Feedback is a cornerstone of growth. Accountability partners serve as mirrors, reflecting your progress and offering constructive feedback. This feedback can shed light on areas that require improvement, helping you refine your approach and optimize your strategies for success. For Kay and me, that feedback included encouragement and accountability for daily hydration, for stretching post-exertion, and for optimizing protein intake at mealtime. Within a supportive community, feedback comes from diverse

PAGE 15

perspectives, enriching your understanding of different approaches to wellness. Whether adjusting your workout routine or fine-tuning your dietary choices, the insights you gain from your peers can be instrumental in your progress.

Celebrating Milestones: Fuel for Motivation Celebrating achievements,no matter how small, is a powerful way to sustain motivation. Accountability partners and communities understand the significance of milestones and offer the recognition and celebration you deserve. This positive reinforcement propels you forward, motivating you to keep pushing boundaries and striving for more. As Kay and I came within 3 days of finishing our challenge, we renewed our commitment to the goal, to each other, and to finishing well.

Embrace the journey with open arms. Starting your wellness journey with an accountability partner and a supportive community that has your back is a gamechanging decision. These partnerships fuel motivation, provide resources, offer emotional support, facilitate constructive feedback, celebrate milestones, and solve challenges. And for the rest of the story? Kay completed our step challenge and left the next day for two weeks, touring England and the Scottish Isles. We talked by phone this morning, and she shared that our intense focus on physical activity was absolutely essential for her as she and her family toured the glorious countryside of the United Kingdom on foot, encompassing miles of ancient footpaths and stone staircases. She never missed a single beat and deemed it the trip of a lifetime! On my end, our step challenge ended the week of our daughter’s wedding, and this mother-of-the-bride celebrated by dancing the night away with a heart (and body) full of joy! Blessings to you all, my friends. PLAN AHEAD FOR YOUR MOST

Joyful

Ch ristmasyet By Cathy Johnson, Professional Life Coach

C

hristmas can be a heartwarming and exciting time of the year, but with all its demands, obligations, and drivers, sometimes Christmas can be out of control. We can let Christmas control us instead of putting ourselves in the driver's seat. The best advice I've gotten as I approach the holidays is to be proactive. Shopping early for presents, planning for holiday gatherings, or getting a Christmas card list together early are all great ways to be prepared for the busyness that comes in December each year. But is it enough? Have you thought of planning ahead for your own positive peace of mind and your own sense of control? Are you proactive in finding ways to give yourself time to de-stress, recharge your energy, or take charge of your holiday season? Here are some tips to take control of Christmas this year before Christmas takes control of you:

"DON'T LET CHRISTMAS CONTROL YOU," SAYS PROFESSIONAL LIFE COACH CATHY JOHNSON. "INSTEAD, BE PROACTIVE THIS SEASON SO YOU CAN BE IN CONTROL."

#1. Start with January 2 in mind. How do you want to wake up on January 2? What's your vision for Christmas this year? Set some time aside now to use your imagination and define your future state. What matters to you? Is it good to spend quality time with the people who are most

INSPIRED CHRISTMAS important to you? Is it an act of service for those in need? Is it downtime? Decorating or crafting? Vacationing? Is your focus on worship and faith this season? Write all your ideas and priorities down. Imagine how you want to feel and the kinds of memories you desire when January comes. Get clear on your vision for Christmas 2023.

#2. Gather your support team. Who can come alongside you to help you fulfill your vision? What key relationships have you cultivated during the year that can help you this Christmas season? Do you need to hire a decorator or caterer? Is there someone you know with a special talent who would love to lend a hand? It might be a professional counselor or coach. This might be the time to reconnect with trusted friends who know you well enough to be a sounding board. You need at least one "buddy" who would enjoy partnering with you throughout this season, so you don't have to do everything by yourself.

#3. Put your plans and priorities on a calendar. I suggest keeping the calendar dates in November and December in a visible place so you can see them every day. Ask yourself: What is a plan that makes this holiday season work? This is the time to really take a good look at the big picture and to track events and time along the way. Think ahead about your priorities for time, experiences, people, and fun things to do. Mark out the time for what's important to you—not to please other people in your life. Plan time

to just sit at home and look at the Christmas tree, build a fire, and plan some time in isolation if that is important to you. The main thing is to prioritize what matters most to you at Christmas.

#4. Evaluate your energizers and drainers. Manage and adapt as the season goes along. It can take a lot of energy to plan and participate. When you feel overwhelmed or stressed, it's important to step back and do something that recharges. It's helpful to make a list of events and people that bring you energy and another list of relationships and things that drain your emotional strength. Think of ways to balance your activities (if possible) so you don't overload one day or week with draining people or events. Intersperse your energizers between potentially draining uati ons. If you need help navigating drainers and energizers, brainstorm with one of your buddies about setting limits. (Hint: coaching can help increase self-awareness in these areas!

#5. Gain a new perspective on "mustattend" events or "mustsee" people. The reality of the season is that sometimes it's impossible to avoid those people or gatherings that traditionally have caused pain or left us feeling awful. If you cannot eliminate seeing certain people or attending events from your calendar, consider making plans as you encounter these situations. For example, if you must gather with family

PAGE 17

where you know someone will attend who has hurt you in the past, tell yourself, "I'm here because I value family time and traditions." Or, if you're attending a mandatory office party, prepare to have some conversation starters ready to find common ground for those awkward encounters. Then, limit the number of these events and the time spent there. You might try detaching yourself emotionally or looking at the situation from a variety of different angles. Finally, for most of us, the Christmas season is a time to connect deeply with God and with the people we love. There's no other time of the year that is so full of seasonal beauty, festive music, reminders of gratitude, and a desire to give and give and give again to others. Take some time to prepare ahead and put your mind at ease to fully enjoy a very merry Christmas!

REFLECTING ON THE

Digital Year AND LOOKING AHEAD

A

s we approach the end of 2023, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering support and active participation throughout this demanding yet fulfilling period. Your continued patronage has been incredible, and I hope my articles and tips have been beneficial in your quest to grow your business online. Thank you! In case you missed some of them, here is a quick recap of the main topics we covered this year:

Consistent scheduling remains crucial.

Getting your business on social media: Social media is a powerful tool to reach new customers, build relationships, and showcase your brand personality. I shared some best practices and strategies to create a successful social media presence for your business, such as choosing the right platforms, creating engaging content, and using analytics to measure your results. As a busy solopreneur or time-strapped business owner, managing your time efficiently and avoiding burnout is crucial. One effective way to do this is by using a social media scheduler. By planning and automating your posts in advance, you can free up your time to focus on other aspects of your business and achieve a healthy work-life balance. Advance scheduling allows solopreneurs and small businesses to maintain a consistent social media presence without becoming overwhelmed, whether posting to Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or other networks. Some top options for 2023 include Buffer Hootsuit and Facebook’s native scheduler, all of which make it easy to queue up posts for days or weeks in advance. Staying visible online through consistent posting is essential.

Websites Evolved Beyond Basic HTML

In today’s competitive online world, more than simply having a website is required. Platforms like Wix, Squarespace, and Shopify now offer drag-and-drop templates and e-commerce capabilities, empowering many businesses to finally get their brand on line and process sales without technical expertise or large budgets. Updating your website presence should remain a priority for the coming year

to stay discoverable. Suppose you want your business to be easily found online and take orders. In that case, you have to make sure your website is optimized for search engines, mobile devices, and the user experience. I previously provided tips and tricks on improving your website design, speed, security, and functionality to attract visitors, generate leads, and increase sales. Accessible platforms like those mentioned above allow you to create and update your website without hiring a web designer.

and post it at the best times. Thank you for bein g part of the IYM community. I want to share some holiday gift ideas for techies and solopreneurs that you or your loved ones might enjoy. With $50 gift cards, you can gift subscriptions to platforms that empower and inspire solopreneurs and small business owners. A noise-canceling headphone: If you work from home or travel frequently, you might find this gift helpful. It can block distracting noises and create a more productive and relaxing environment. A smart speaker with a screen is more than just a music player. It can be used as a personal assistant, a video conferencing tool, a digital photo frame, and more. One of the top options available is the Amazon Echo Show (2nd Generation), which features an 0-inch HD screen, stereo speakers, Alexa voice control, and thousands of skills.

AI Became an Emerging Assistant How A.I. can help you get on social media and update your website: Artificial intelligence is more than just a buzzword; it is a reality that can help you save time, money, and effort in online marketing. A.I. can assist you in creating content, generating captions, designing graphics, editing videos, and more. However, there are potential pitfalls when using AI, such as plagiarism, bias, and errors. Therefore, it is crucial to fact-check and review the output before publishing it. • Using A.I. to improve your online presence: If you’re looking to make your life easier when managing your social media and website, you should check out some easy, AL-powered tools. They can help you automate tasks and improve your online presence. • Lately, this tool uses A.F. to help you create social media posts that promote your content. • QuillBot: This tool uses AI to summarize and paraphrase existing content into brand-new versions. • Feed Hive: This tool uses A.I. to recycle content

These are some cool tech gifts I think any techie or solopreneur would love. Of course, many more options exist, so feel free to explore and find the perfect gift for yourself or someone else.

Reflecting on these trends, as we look ahead to the new year, businesses should focus on the following: • • • •

Continuing consistent social media scheduling through tools like Buffer or Hootsuite (3-month plans starting at $15/month) Updating your website presence using easy builders like Wix or Squarespace (basic plans from $13/month) Experimenting with A.I. assistants for low-level tasks while closely monitoring outputs (Anthropic’s virtual assistant plan is $499/month) Considering social media management certifications to stay ahead of algorithm changes I wish you all the best in digitally transforming your business in 2024. Thank you again for being part of my journey. I look forward to connecting with you again in 2024. Please feel free to reach out if you need any additional social media or website development tips. Here’s to a solid start to the new year! Cheers,

INSPIRED PEACE

Redeem

your peace By Carlene Lewis Redmond

A

s the year comes to a close, now is the perfect time to assess and reconcile the past to create a clean slate for the future. Clear out old, long-standing issues in preparation for the new year. Healthy debate often results in new and interesting ideas, but major disputes can throw a wrench into the mix, paralyzing any momentum. Are there old differences or disagreements left unsettled and without resolution? Holding on to unresolved conflict can be a source of stress and could hinder productivity. As Elsa from Frozen would say, Let it go.” Letting go of major contention may be challenging at first, but with some effort, it is possible to turn the coin and come to a mutual level of understanding. Putting the following tips into practice when there is divisiveness can help avoid major discord: •

Set the past aside.Look ahead to the future by setting goals.

•

Focus on the issue, not the person. Consider it a project to be worked on systematically, step by step.

INSPIRED PEACE •

Show empathy. Ask questions to gain understanding.

•

Find common ground (even a broken clock is right twice a day). Make the most of the points agreed upon and minimize the others. Keep an open mind.Consider perspectives other than your own.

•

Be optimistic.

•

Expect the best outcome.

•

Lastly, remember that practicing patience and extending grace adds value that cannot be ignored. Taking purposeful steps on a path free of unresolved discord and clutter can lead to a peaceful new year.

DASH OFF!

Work Your Dash Off!

e’ve all seen one, stood at a graveside and passed a cemetery. Maybe it’s real personal for you. Perhaps you lost a loved one, a best friend. Let’s take it a step further. Think about all of the eulogies you’ve heard, how many memorial services you’ve been a part of. At every one of these events, we hear about that person’s dash. It’s called a eulogy! Clarity is a beautiful thing, with that in mind, here’s what I mean by DASH. When you look at a tombstone or other marker, the dash is the line you see between the dates of a person’s birth and death.

That person didn’t know when they’d be born, or when they’d die. However, here’s the deal, they were in total control of and owned their dash. The good, the bad, the painful, the joyous, the exciting, the happy, the ugly. In essence, they wrote their own eulogy by how they lived their life!

Hear my heart on this. I’m in no way referring to or talking about the awful things that’s happened to people that were totally out of their control. Things like abuse (physical, emotional, etc.), life happens and it’s not always pretty. Nevertheless, what I am talking about are all of the things that we can control, which is way more than you think. The times we settle for less both personally and professionally. All of the times and ways that we allow others to devalue our very being. It’s time to own your DASH. To go for the things that are important to you, the dreams you have, and the gifts you’ve been given. It’s okay to take care of you, and to just go for it. I’m writing my eulogy every day, and so are you. We can decide, and yes control, what will be said about us when we’re gone. So, honey, I’m working my DASH off! What will YOUR dash say about you? Smooches!
