he holidays are a time of celebration with family and friends.

For thousands of American families, the holidays need some extra cheer as a family member is deployed while serving for our freedom.With more than 173,000 active-duty personnel serving outside the US in more than 150 countries around the world, the families of these men and women need our help to make their holidays happy and memorable.

There are several organizations throughout the country that have specialized programs for the families of those deployed. Operation Homefront has its “Adopt-A-Family Holiday Program” where anyone can sponsor a military family for the holidays.You can also consider teaming up with another family or organizing your church, workplace or community group to adopt.Visit www.operationhomefront.net to learn how you can help.

Closer to home, there are organizations that often host special events, fundraisers, and toy drives for military families. Be sure

to check with your local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) or American Legion to learn about programs they host in your area.

During the year, there are several ways to work with the local VFW or Legion to raise money for families with deployed service members such as holding a pancake breakfast and inviting the military families. Proceeds can go to a special fund you set up for the families.

You could also host a chili cook-off and charge a small donation for admission. A food tasting also gets the community involved because local restaurants can participate and attendees pay a small fee.

Helping is also personal. Sometimes what a husband or wife needs when their spouse is gone is someone to talk with. Invite them over for dinner or ask them to meet you at the local coffee shop. Get to know them – sometimes the best gift of all is to be willing to listen!

Helping military families during the holidays is your chance to bring joy to the face of a child while telling the family “thank you” for serving our country.

Strawberry Christmas Tree Brownie Bites

EVERYONE WILL LOVE THE SWEET SURPRISE FOUND IN THIS EASY HOLIDAY RECIPE!

WHAT YOU’LL NEED: ¬ 1 box brownie mix ¬ Cream cheese frosting ¬ Green food coloring ¬ 24 small strawberries ¬ Yellow fondant or star-shaped sprinkles ¬ Small ball-shaped candy decorations DIRECTIONS: 1. Bake brownies in greased mini-muffin tins filled up ¾ of the way.The baking time will be shorter than usual, so use a toothpick and insert in the center until it comes out clean.

2. Add the food coloring to the frosting. Cool the brownies and secure the strawberries to the brownies with a dab of frosting. Put frosting in a piping bag fit with a small star tip, and cover the whole strawberry by starting at the bottom of the strawberry, applying a bit of pressure, and pulling away to a nice point.

3. Decorate with candy decorations. Dust the brownie bites with powdered sugar to imitate a layer of snow!

Eggnog Cookies EGG NOG AND THE HOLIDAYS ARE A DUO THAT CAN’T BE IGNORED.THIS COOKIE TAKES THE HEAVENLY AROMA OF NUTMEG WITH THE SWEET TASTE OF EGG NOG TO CREATE A SWEET TREAT EVERYONE WILL LOVE – EGG NOG FANS OR FOES. WHAT YOU’LL NEED: Dough: ¬ 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature ¬ 2 cups granulated sugar ¬ 1 cup commercial eggnog ¬ 5½ cups all-purpose flour, plus additional for work surface ¬ 1 teaspoon baking soda ¬ ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg Topping: ¬ 1 large egg white, lightly beaten ¬ Sugar sprinkles DIRECTIONS: Dough: 1. In a large bowl, mix butter and sugar together until mixture is light and fluffy. Add eggnog; stir until blended. Add flour, baking soda, and nutmeg; stir to mix.

2. Form dough into a 6” flattened disk and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate until chilled, at least 2 hours.

3. Preheat oven to 350°. Prepare 2 large baking sheets; lightly grease with shortening, or line with parchment paper.

4. On a lightly floured pastry mat or pastry board, roll the dough to a 1/8 to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut dough into desired shapes using a cookie cutter that has been dipped in flour.

5. Place cutout dough 2 inches apart on baking sheets.

Topping: 6. Brush cookies with egg white and sprinkle with sugar sprinkles.

Bake: 7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until edges are very lightly browned. Remove cookies with a metal spatula and place on a wire cooling rack.

Homemade Bailey’s Irish Cream GATHER YOUR FRIENDS AND HOST A FUN NIGHT OF GIFT MAKING. WITH THIS EASY TO MAKE GIFT, EVERYONE CAN BRING A DIFFERENT INGREDIENT TO CREATE A BIG BATCH OF IRISH CREAM. IT’S THE PERFECT REASON TO GET EVERYONE TOGETHER WHILE MAKING A GREAT GIFT FOR ANY ADULT ON YOUR LIST. AND YES,TASTE-TESTING IS ENCOURAGED! WHAT YOU’LL NEED: ¬ 1 ¾ cup Irish whiskey ¬ 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk ¬ 1 cup heavy cream or half-and-half ¬ 2 Tbsp. chocolate syrup ¬ 2 Tbsp. instant coffee granules ¬ 1 tsp. vanilla extract ¬ ½ tsp. almond extract Mix all ingredients until well-blended. Pour your Irish Cream into mason jars or other containers. Use decorative fabric and ribbon to make them look festive. Refrigerate immediately, and chill before serving.

Chocolate Dipped Spoons STIR A LITTLE CHOCOLATE SWEETNESS INTO A MUG OF COFFEE, ESPRESSO OR HOT CHOCOLATE. DON’T FORGET TO ASK THE KIDS FOR HELP – IT’S EASY AND MESS-FREE! WHAT YOU’LL NEED: ¬ Plastic spoons ¬ 6 ounces white dipping chocolate ¬ 6 ounces dark dipping chocolate DIRECTIONS: 1. Line 2 cookie sheets with waxed paper.

Put the white and dark chocolate in separate bowls and melt each in the microwave at ½ power for 1 minute. Stir thoroughly. Continue to microwave and stir at 15 second intervals until smooth and completely melted.

2. Dip a spoon into the bowl, covering both sides completely. Place the spoon on the cookie sheet and rest the spoons handle on the cookie sheet edge.

3. Refrigerate until chocolate is completely hardened.Wrap each spoon in cellophane.

It’s easy to dress up a cellophane bag! Line the bag with tissue paper.Then use a hole punch, craft knife, or scissors to poke holes or make slits in the bag. Lace ribbon, string, buttons and decorative objects – sprigs of juniper, boxwood, greenery, and jingle bells – through the bags.

These cards are often adorned with scenes of the Holy Family. In Hong Kong, Santa Claus has emerged as a traditional figure and is known as Lan Khoong or Dun Che Lao Ren. MADAGASCAR A special Christmas food in Madagascar are fresh lychees. Lychees are popular fruits that resemble the texture of a strawberry.

PHILIPPINES In this tropical island Asian nation, godparents are especially respected and it is imperative that they be visited on Christmas Day.The children wish them “Maligayang Pasko” and kiss each one’s hand to show respect and then they take their hand and touch it to their own forehead.The children often perform for their godparents by singing, dancing, or presenting a play.

FRANCE The highlight of Christmas dinner in France is the bûche de Noël, a cake shaped like a log.

It is a latter-day, edible version of the ancient Yule log. Pâtisseries (pastry shops) offer all kinds of bûches, covered in dark or light chocolate, or even white chocolate tinted in many colors.

CROATIA A traditional Croatian Christmas dinner consists of noodles, turkey, cabbage rolls, pork and potatoes. Desserts of strudel and biscuits are then eaten, followed by the worldwide tradition of a post-meal nap.

LIBERIA On the west coast of Africa in Liberia, most homes have an palm oil tree for a Christmas tree, which are decorated with bells. People exchange gifts such as cotton cloths, soaps, sweets, pencils, and books. Fireworks light up the night sky on Christmas evening after they share a dinner of rice, beef, and biscuits.

Rudolph Realities

YOU KNOW DANCER AND PRANCER, BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU REALLY KNOW ABOUT THE MOST-LOVED REINDEER OF ALL?

Rudolph was the creation of a man named Robert L. May. He was a copywriter for Montgomery Ward and was asked to make up a fun tale as a tactic to generate sales during the holiday shopping season.

Rudolph was not May’s first choice for a name.

He toyed with the idea of naming him “Rollo” or “Reginald” before deciding on Rudolph.

Gene Autry recorded the song “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” in 1949.The song sold two million copies that year. Gene Autry would forever be known for his most popular hit of all time.

Burl Ives narrated Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer in 1967. He was the voice of Sam the Snowman.The animators also created Sam to look just like Ives!

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was actually filmed in Japan.

Someone reads The Gingerbread Man story. Every time the word “ran” is said, the children pass the book to the child on their right. Continue doing until the story is over. Each child will have a special book in their hand to open and read!

Marshmallow Peeps Wreath

What You’ll Need: ¬ 12” floral foam wreath ¬ 4 yards ribbon to cover wreath ¬ 1 yard ribbon to hang wreath ¬ 3 packs Reindeer Marshmallow Peeps ¬ Hot glue gun Directions: Wrap the floral wreath with 4 yards of satin ribbon to cover it. Pin into place.

Next, attach the Marshmallow Peeps onto the ribbon-covered wreath using your hot glue gun. To hang, use 1 yard ribbon.

What You’ll Need: ¬ Cookie Mix ¬ White Frosting ¬ Food Coloring ¬ Marshmallows ¬ Pretzel sticks, candy corn, and chocolate chips Directions: 1. Start by making the cookies according to package instructions. There will be two recipe options: the drop cookie or the cutout cookie recipe. Choose the drop cookie recipe.

2. When placing the cookie dough on the cookie sheets, don’t worry about making them round.

3. Bake the cookies according to package instructions.

4. When your cookies have cooled, drizzle white frosting on the top.

5. Next, microwave your marshmallows on a greased plate for about 30 seconds.

6. With greased/buttered fingers, remove the marshmallows from the plate and place on the cookies to serve as the snowman’s head.

7. Next comes the fun part – decorating! Use pretzel sticks for arms, candy corn for the nose, and chocolate chips for the eyes. Use food coloring to give Frosty some clothes!

The aroma of pumpkin wakes up and rejuvenates everyone’s holiday spirit….no matter how early Christmas morning comes!

Christmas Breakfast Casserole Recipe

Here is a simple solution to create a delicious brunch idea the night before.

What You’ll Need: ¬ 1 pound ground sausage ¬ ½ green pepper, diced ¬ ½ red pepper, diced ¬ 3 spring onions, diced ¬ 8 eggs ¬ 1½ cups milk ¬ Salt and pepper to taste ¬ 1 teaspoon dried Italian blend herbs or 1 teaspoon each: fresh chopped basil, oregano and rosemary (optional) ¬ 1 day old French baguette, chopped in cubes ¬ 1 – 8 oz package shredded mild cheddar cheese Directions: 1. Preheat large skillet and add sausage. Brown sausage, add peppers and onions. Cook until peppers and onions are soft. Let mixture cool.

2. Preheat oven to 350°. Combine eggs, milk, salt and pepper in large bowl.Whisk well. Add cooked sausage and peppers, green onions, herbs, half of the cheese and all of the bread in a large bowl. Mix well and pour into casserole dish.

3. Top with the other half of the cheese. Bake for 30 minutes covered. Remove foil and bake for 15 – 20 minutes, or until nicely browned.

What You’ll Need ¬ 3 cups hot whole milk ¬ 4 tsp. white sugar ¬ ½ tsp. vanilla extract ¬ ½ tsp. pumpkin pie spice ¬ 6 ounces double-strength brewed coffee Directions Combine the hot milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and pumpkin pie spice in a blender; blend until frothy.

Pour the mixture into 3 coffee mugs to about 2/3 full.

Pour 2 ounces coffee into each mug. Garnish each mug with whipped topping and pumpkin pie spice.
