Chatham Arts Council

ARTS

Describing its work as “nurturing creative thinkers,” the Chatham Arts Council invests in local artists and educates children in the arts.

Investments include grants to support local arts activities and help promoting events across Chatham. Education is provided through its annual ClydeFEST, a hands-on arts carnival for elementary-age children held each spring, and the Artists in Schools initiative, which brings professional artists into local schools to enrich math, science, language and history instruction.

hen Chatham County Schools was named one of the nation’s 2019 Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation, a nonprofit in the music products industry, it was recognized for demonstrating “an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education” and awarded an honor received by just 623 school districts in the United States and three in this state.

Where were the other two? Chapel Hill and Greensboro.

That may have surprised some casual observers, but not people most familiar with the local arts scene.

Chatham Libraries

Music is everywhere. From huge events like the Shakori Hills GrassRoots Festival to smaller concerts in less obvious places: a restaurant in Pittsboro, old general store in Bynum, even a renovated barn in Fearrington.

And there’s more than music. In a region long known for world-class pottery, visual arts of all kinds are thriving. Perhaps the best-known example is the Chatham Artists Guild studio tour every December, but there are small, sometimes offbeat galleries and exhibitions available all year long, which is one thing that makes Chatham such a dynamic place to live.

Showing its spirit of innovation, the main branch of Chatham County Public Libraries operates jointly as a public library and campus library for Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro. In addition to extensive print and audio-visual materials, three branches combine to provide Chatham residents with book clubs; genealogy and local history resources; free access to NC LIVE, a statewide database of newspapers, magazines and e-books; computer access; and specialized online services. chathamlibraries.org ► Chatham Community Library. ou don’t need to be an especially astute observer to see the transformation now reshaping Chatham’s economic landscape.

Literally transforming the landscape, in fact. Construction recently got into full swing in north Pittsboro, where heavy machinery is shaping the ground for Mosaic at Chatham Park, a 350-acre, mixed-use development that marks the first major phase in one of the nation’s largest planned communities.

That’s a lot. But that’s not all.

Civic Clubs

W

ith people scattered across such an expansive landscape, civic clubs and faith-based groups help sustain many Chatham communities.

Some are prominent and take on a nearly superhero role. One prime example: the Silk Hope Ruritans, which are practically caretakers for the community they serve. The club constructed a community building that brings everyone together, created one of the region’s most popular summer festivals and provides scholarships so young neighbors can get help with college. And the list goes on.

Others may not be quite as visible,

but they’re no less important. Churches in Chatham not only provide spiritual guidance, but serve people beyond their walls by operating food pantries, hosting community events and rallying to help others in need.

“If it weren’t for churches, this would be a much less compassionate place,” says Richard LaDew, pastor of Siler City Presbyterian Church and president of the West Chatham Ministerial Association.

“You have a lot of people giving to support people less fortunate than themselves.

Without all of them, this would be a much poorer place.”

uch of the local buzz about education is focusing on two new public schools opening in the next couple of years, but there’s a lot happening right now to keep people excited.

Start with Chatham County Schools, which received a 2019 Magna Award from the National School Boards Association for breaking down barriers for underserved students. The district recently expanded its acclaimed dual-language initiative to help young students become fluent in English and Spanish. And its AVID program has been so successful that Chatham Central High School was named a national

I can just grab a Will from the internet and I’m done right?

No. The internet is a wonderful place to visit for entertainment and information. However, the internet is a terrible legal advisor.

Each of us needs a complete Will that is well thought-out. Your Will may also need one or more trusts, either as part of your Will or standing alone beside it, if you have special circumstances. An example of such circumstances is a child with special needs, or a large estate subject to tax.

In addition, each of us needs two more documents: a Financial Power of Attorney and a Health Care Power of Attorney. Your Financial Affairs Power of Attorney will designate someone to make “money” decisions for you if the day comes that you can no longer make them for yourself.

Your Health Care Power of Attorney will name someone to make medical decisions for you if your doctors can no longer communicate with you.

In addition, each of these documents gives your selected fiduciaries some guidance as to what decisions you would make if you were still able.

Don’t forget to name back-ups to the people you name as your fiduciaries. We all expect the people we rely on to be there when we need them, but it doesn’t always work out that way. Sometimes an early death or disability can keep your named fiduciary from being able to act for you.

So, please don’t make the mistake of copying a Will from the internet and assuming that your estate plan is thorough and complete. Come into the office and let Grant or Woods explore your needs and draft an estate plan for you. Your family will appreciate it!

here are a lot of people working in Chatham to help their neighbors when times get tough — not only in governmental agencies, but also in nonprofits of all shapes and sizes.

Some of the big ones you’ve probably already heard about. You’ve seen people ringing bells for The Salvation Army every holiday season, but may not always see how the ministry helps people with shelter after some devastating storm or with food and clothing when a family is struggling.

Others you may might not know at all.

Like Chatham Cares Pharmacy, which provides free prescriptions, over-the-

As director of the Chatham County Department of Social Services, Jennie Kristiansen sees the big picture — the full sweep of needs in the community. She describes local nonprofits as significant and robust.

“One of the things I like about being in Chatham is that we have a culture of working together and knowing who the providers are,” she says. “It’s nice to pick up the phone, call another agency and help somebody get connected.”

Old Fashioned Farmers Day in Silk Hope has been running strong since 1976 and attracts thousands from across the state and well beyond. Goldston

COMMUNITY

The smallest of three incorporated towns in Chatham, Goldston was established in 1907 — fueled by a railroad line that still runs along Main Street and through a compact business district that stretches a few blocks.

The town is home to about 350 residents and 15 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Its quaint downtown attracts visitors driving through southwestern Chatham all year long, but especially in the fall, when Goldston celebrates Old Fashion Day, a one-day, downtown street fair featuring music, food, classic cars and local arts.

on’t blink! Chatham is transforming so quickly that, if you do, you may miss something … monumental.

For the longest time, this behemoth of a county — 710 square miles, if you’re keeping track at home — didn’t seem to change all that much. And even when it did, it was mainly a just little bit along the margins. Greater Chapel Hill edging its way into northern Chatham. Cary annexing a few square miles in the east.

Now, change of all kinds is coming.

And it’s coming fast. Western Chatham already enjoys a newly vibrant culture infused with Latinx influences and art that

Pittsboro

Formed in 1787 and serving as the seat of Chatham government, Pittsboro has managed to combine a respect for its long history with a look toward the future — with farmers, artists, students and tech innovators all living and working in the growing community.

About 6,750 people currently reside within the city limits and just beyond, though that number will quickly be eclipsed with the Chatham Park planned community now underway. Also drawing people to Pittsboro are a historic and vibrant downtown as well as Central Carolina Community College’s Chatham Main Campus.

Siler City

continues to flourish. Central Chatham is about to be shaped with a new “live, work, play” community that will bring commerce, art and entertainment, not to mention plenty of new residents from across the country and probably around the world.

And speaking of something “monumental,” that international influence is already on the way — complete with its own monument. The Carolina Murugan Temple, a Hindu spiritual complex, is planned on 130 acres along the Deep River in Moncure, taking advantage of Chatham’s easy access to the entire Research Triangle region.

For most of Siler City’s history, beginning with its founding in 1887, the town served as commercial hub for rural residents in western Chatham. And it still does, with a strong retail economy and an industrial presence emphasizing textiles and food processing.

But a transformation has been occurring in recent years — with the town of about 8,000 residents quietly emerging as a vibrant and diverse community, with a robust Latinx culture and artists working in many media taking up residence near downtown galleries.

f you ask many people what they know about Chatham, discussion will turn right away to Jordan Lake. The massive reservoir with 180 miles of undeveloped shoreline is one of the state’s recreational gems, attracting visitors from the Research Triangle and far beyond.

There’s camping and picnicking and hiking and fishing and boating and swimming. There are bald eagles to view.

And staff members from the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area schedule plenty of educational programs for all ages, most offered free of charge, to help visitors appreciate our natural environment.

There’s even more to keep local residents active. Chatham is an especially popular venue for cycling, as you will notice while driving through the area on any nice weekend morning. There are one-of-a-kind attractions to visit. Plenty of golf, including signature courses by Jack Nicklaus and Davis Love III. And recreational sports are popular all year long; leagues for youth and adults are organized by county and city recreation programs as well as sport-specific groups.

“There’s something for everyone” is pretty much a cliché. But, in Chatham, there really is something for everyone.

DO I NEED THE NEW SHINGLES VACCINATION AND WHERE DO I GET IT? Yes, even if you had the previous vaccine, since Shingrix is 98% effective. Local pharmacies give the vaccine — two shots, two to six months apart — and people 50 and over do not need a prescription.

Pamela Scheetz, pharmacist at CVS in Siler City, says the vaccine is now in short supply, but should be more readily available by mid-2020.

Chatham County Public Health

While medical care is one key to wellness, when you dive in, the entire concept gets pretty deep.
