One thing I love about sports is optimism runs rampant at the beginning of every new season. While there are certainly favorites and teams with a history of success, when every team has an 0-0 record, every team has a chance. It may sound simplistic, but there is some truth to it. For proof, look back just one year. When the 2018 football season was kicking off, most fans expected Manvel to have a great year, but Alvin and Shadow Creek were supposed to struggle. As expected, Manvel played well. But by their standards, the season was probably not a success. Alvin struggled like many predicted, but the surprise of the year had to be Shadow Creek. In its first varsity season, the Sharks were predicted to finish sixth in one of the strongest conferences in the state. But no one told the Sharks that. An opportunistic team that never gave up, Shadow Creek just won. Week after week, they found a way to get another win. That led to the first district title and the first playoff berth. And eventually it led all the way to the state championship game. No one expected that. I’m not sure even the Sharks did. But Shadow Creek did just that and proved there is a reason for all to have hope as the season kicks off.

Tekyl ready for challenge of turning around Alvin’s football program By Stephen Collins Sports Editor Turning around a program is nothing new to Tim Teykl. Teykl took a Terry program, which had never been to the postseason before his 1991 arrival in Rosenberg, and he ultimately guided the Rangers to an impressive 160 victories and 16 playoff berths. Teykl now faces a similar daunting task to resurrect a Yellowjacket program, which went winless in all 10 games last season and hasn’t been to the playoffs since 2005. Hello challenge, meet Tim Teykl 101. “I’ve been excited since day one and my excitement hasn’t diminished in any shape 4 4

or form,” he said. “Every day is Christmas in regards to discovering what Alvin’s about. The resources and support culture are here. Some of it just needs to be reinvigorated. “But it’s there. You don’t have to give birth to it. I believe the win over factor (with the players) happens sooner than them or I expect, because we kept predominately all the coaches at the high school.” Alvin returns 10 lettermen overall with five players coming back on the offensive side of the ball and three returning on defense. The offensive veterans include linemen Andrew Gormly (6-3, 290) and Connor
Hughes, running back Richard Valdez (5-9, 155) and receivers Sam Bell (6-4, 220) and Chris Touch (6-2, 190). Gormly joined Hughes, Bell and Touch in seeing action in all 10 games last season, while Valdez played in eight contests. While he ran the split back veer scheme at Terry, Teykl plans to go with the wishbone attack for the Jackets’ offense. “There’s going to be a whole lot of plays to the right and a whole lot of plays to the left,” Teykl said. “You’re just going to have to know if you’re going to have a man on you and if the play is on your backside. “Nobody on our schedule is going to have a quarterback that touches the fanny of the center. Everybody else will be in

pistol or shotgun, so that in itself gives us a ones up. It’s contrary to what everybody else is running. They’re going to have to emulate and simulate that in their practices. “We would like to go with a senior or junior at quarterback, but that doesn’t mean that’s who we will go with. It’s like we got a lot of baby fish and we’re going to put all of them in the tank and see which ones can swim the fastest.” The number of offensive line candidates excites Teykl, as well. “I’ve never had this many candidates to play offensive line in all my years of coaching,” he said. “We got some real beefy kids. Another thing I think these kids are going to be excited about is that we’re going to play in a four-point stance up front. “We got to put a hat on people, create an angle and get good double teams.” The Jackets’ defensive core is led by linebackers Hayden Barron (5-9, 190) and Angel Lopez (6-0, 220) and lineman Andrew Solis (6-3, 250). Barron saw action mostly on the offensive line in 2018, before playing the last two games on defense. While Lopez’s and Solis’ seasons were both
cut short by injuries, the pair combined for 15 tackles during the first two games. Possible two-way players for Teykl include Hughes (OL/DL), Jordan Torres (DB/RB) and Gabriel Campbell (WR/DB). The new Alvin coach also plans to utilize a new alignment on defense with the “okie” front, while there’s also an ultimatum attached for his squad. “The philosophy of both our defensive coordinator and myself is putting someone on top of the center and messing with that center,” Teykl said. “We’re not going to allow him the freedom of snapping the football. “Everybody else runs a 4-2 package, where the center is uncovered. If you’re not committed to running, you won’t be allowed to step on that side of the ball (for Alvin). We better play like we have 12 or 13 Yellowjackets on defense. When the play is blown dead, you should right there besides the zebra ready to pick up the football.” Teykl, 63, had served as the director of high school relations for Cougars’ football during the last two years at the University of Houston.
The 1978 Texas A&M graduate has compiled a lofty 160-112-1 career mark, guiding the Rosenberg Terry Rangers to the playoffs 16 times and also coaching over 120 Texas High School Coaches’ Association Academic All-State players. Additions to Teykl’s staff include new defensive coordinator Steve Thiebaud and offensive coordinator James Gage. Thiebaud, who’s coming from West Columbia, was also Teykl’s DC at Terry, while Gage was at S&S Consolidated High School. Alvin opens its season on Aug. 29 against Statford at Tully Stadium in Houston. ALVIN SUN MEDIA | FALL SPORTS MAGAZINE 5

Young Mavericks look for redemption on the gridiron By Stephen Collins Sports Editor
Falling to Huntsville in the second round of the playoffs last year, the Manvel Mavericks suffered their earliest postseason exit in team history. With also just a handful of combined starters returning for 2019, head coach Kevin Hall elected to have the Mavericks’ gridiron program go through another rarity
for the first time in several years — spring ball. “We felt like as many young kids we have this upcoming fall, we needed to find out where they were as far as their physicality. The best thing about the spring is we didn’t get anybody hurt,” he said. “We could have as many as eight sophomores starting. “We may also have three sophomores starting on defense, but they had really
good springs and despite the fact they’re young, they’re developing into really good players.” While 23 lettermen return this year for Hall, receiver and 2018 all-district first team selection Jalen Paxton (6-0, 185, 4.5) is the lone offensive veteran, while five Mavs are back for the second-year coach on defense. “Pax had a great spring and if there’s only one kid coming back, you want a kid like him,” Hall said. Other players to watch for the second-year coach include QB Tucker Yarborough (6-1, 215, 4.9), running backs Donovan Eaglin (5-11, 225, 4.6) and Jordan Vaughn (6-1, 190, 4.6), cornerbacks Vinson Brown (6-1, 180, 4.5) and Jaqai Neal (5-10, 185, 4.6), defensive tackle De`Undre Potts (6-0, 285), offensive tackle Christen Robinson (6-4, 285), defensive end Brian Wilturner (5-11, 230), defensive back Treyvon Jenkins and place kicker Luis Moreno. Potts delivered 25 tackles in 2018 with 10 going for losses, while Jenkins had an interception return for 35 yards. “Tucker threw the ball real well in the offseason and at the 7-on-7 state tournament, where we got to the top eight again,” Hall said. “Donovan also ran well in the spring and has gotten a lot stronger in the weight room. He’s a mix between Ladarius (Owens) and Garrison (Johnson) in terms of style. “We had some younger receivers emerge as the spring went on and also during 7-on-7. Those young kids got a long way to go. It’s not prime time for them right now. But we’re happy with the way they’ve shown maturity and they’ve understood that there’s going to be a role they have to have earlier than normal.” Manvel opens their 2019 regular season football slate by traveling to Webster’s Challenger Columbia Stadium to face Clear Lake on Aug. 30. The game with Lake will be the only Saturday contest on the Mavericks’ regular season schedule. Manvel then follows with back-to-back Thursday home games at AISD’s Freedom Field against Crosby (Sept. 5) and Sharpstown (Sept. 12) with the latter game also being the Mavs’ 11-5A

Manvel cruised to a 42-6 victory over the Falcons in last year’s opener, while suffering a 49-47 road heart breaker to Crosby with the Cougars scoring a touchdown on the game’s final play. “We start off with two good football teams,” Hall said. “Lake is a really solid football team. They’re going to have a new offensive coordinator and I’m sure there will be things different about them. Crosby has a new head coach, who was successful in the Corpus area, so he will also bring new things to them.

We also have a scrimmage with Spring Dekaney (Aug. 22) at their place.” Fort Bend Marshall is tabbed by DCTFM to win the 11-5A crown and advance to the Division II state finals again, but ends up on the short end to Aledo for the second straight year. Willowridge and Houston Sterling are the favorites by the magazine’s pundits to finish in the running for the district’s third and fourth seeded playoff berths, as well. Marshall edged Manvel in a 52-51 overtime thriller last year and went on to compete in the Division II state title contest against Aledo. “Marshall has tons of kids back, who are dynamic,” Hall said. “The quarterback (Malik Hornsby) is a tremendous football player and (Devon) Achane is the total package both on and off the field.” “Coach (James) Williams has done a great job over there and they’re going to be good in every place.” The Division II rankings include the following teams: 1. Hall said. “Our kids are way ahead of the learning curve when we put in a new defense last year. We want to work more on the little things like getting more turnovers and being better tacklers. “Last year was such a sharp learning curve that we didn’t work as much on the little things as we should have.”

Former Yellowjacket named head coach in Santa Fe By Stephen Collins Sports Editor
After giving Yellowjacket opponents several headaches during his defensive end days at Alvin High School, Matthew Bentley looks to continue the same intensity a few miles south on Highway 6. The former AHS and University of Houston Cougar standout was hired back in April as the new head football coach at Santa Fe. Bentley had served as the school’s defensive line coach and defensive coordinator nder ark anipes d rin the previo s five seasons. Alvin ISD Athletic Director Michael Bass, who served as the Yellowjackets’ head coach during Bentley’s gridiron days here, was elated to see his former player get the Indians’ top post. “I’m very happy for him,” Bass said. “It’s exciting anytime you see someone grow up in the profession and become a head coach. I think he can be a catalyst to keep Santa Fe going in the healing
direction. “He’s good at building relationships with kids, parents and the community. I’m just so proud of him.” Bentley also credits Bass for giving him insight during his playing days, which he ultimately carried into the coaching ranks. “I will never forget playing for Coach Bass and getting a lot of knowled e fro hi first as a player and then co in back to coach in Alvin ISD,” said Bentley, whose best season in Alvin came in 2001 when he led the Jackets with 92 tackles and six sacks. “The work ethic he taught to us was just tremendous.” Along with his current stint at Santa Fe and the other at Alvin, Bentley also served on the staffs at Pearland and Kempner. While the perennial power Oilers advanced to the playoffs every year during Bentley’s time there, last season’s trip to the 5A bi-district playoffs with Santa Fe proved equally special for the for er acket with the Indians akin the postseason for the first time in almost a decade. “I came here with Coach Kanipes and he did a great job building ALVIN SUN MEDIA | FALL SPORTS MAGAZINE 31
the program back up,” Bentley said. “Santa Fe hadn’t been to the playoffs since 2009 before last year and it was a real big thing for the community. “It’s just unfortunate that we ran into a buzz saw in bi-district with event al ivision II state finalist arshall. While the Indians ended the postseason dry spell last fall, Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine has predicted a tougher road ahead for Bentley’s squad in 2019 with a sixth-place forecast in 12-5A Division II. Port Neches-Groves was picked by DCTFM, along with Nederland, Barbers Hill and Crosby to earn playoff berths. “It will be a rebuilding year for us,” Bentley said. “We lost 28 seniors and have only two starters back on defense and four on offense. “With those numbers, there will be more coaching involved getting the younger kids ready. But our kids have been working real hard during the summer and are excited to start the season.” After SF’s scrimmages with Clear Falls (Aug. 16) and Clear Creek (Aug. 22), Bentley will be making his head coaching debut in the Indians’ Aug. 29 regular season opener against Dobie in Pasadena. here will definitely be b tter ies abo t the first a e , b t if you never have those as a coach, there’s something wrong,” Bentley said. Returning players for Bentley include all-around threat Nate Hays (5-8, 190, 4.6 seconds in the 40-yard dash). After amassing 618 receiving yards and four touchdowns in 2018, Hays’ skills may be utilized more under center this fall.

Other Santa Fe players to watch include tight end Dalton Stevens (6-2, 185), offensive tackle Austin Farris (6-2, 215, 4.9), defensive back/wide receiver Bruce Erekson (5-11, 185, 4.6), receiver Cameron Bennett (6-0, 175, 4.7) and center Joey Gibbs (6-2, 225).

Sharks look to follow up historic season

Shadow Creek delivered a season for the record books in 2018, becoming just the third e as hi h school first year ridiron program ever to compete for a state champion. The Sharks’ lone blemish to a spectacular 15-1 season came in the state title game against Highland Park, who won their third straight 5A Division I crown. “A lot of credit goes to last year’s seniors, because as juniors, those kids were unable to make the playoffs,” Butler said. “They knew ever since we opened a few years ago that they would have one shot at the playoffs. They made the most of their one-year opportunity and established a foundation for our program.” A foundation that will be immediately
tested in 2019 with the Sharks losing key offensive players to graduation like quarterback Jamarian George, running back Marquez Huland and offensive lineman Cam’Ron Johnson. “Each year is like this year where your team develops a new chemistry,” he said. “Hopefully we carried over the same work ethic and same commitment. It’s important for this group of seniors and even some underclassmen to step up and make this their team. We all enjoyed the ride, but the board is erased and it’s a brand new start. “We were the hunters last year, but I don’t think we will sneak up on anybody this year.” Butler’s assessment gains even traction with Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine forecasting the Sharks to not only make the playoffs again, but also to contend with district rival Foster for the Region III
crown for the second straight year. Headed by DCTFM Super Teamer and preseason all-state selection Xavion Alford (6-0, 180 pounds, 4.6 seconds in the 40yard dash), Shadow Creek returns 32 lettermen overall and eight on defense. The senior safety joined end Alec Bryant (6-2, 240, 4.7) and linebacker Jeremiah Harris (6-0, 205, 4.5) as 2018 Texas Sportswriters Association All-State selections. Bryant delivered 70 tackles, 25 tackles for losses and 13 sacks last season, while Harris provided 90 tackles and 16 sacks and Alford added 58 tackles and six interceptions. “We’re fortunate to have a lot of returners on defense and I think we’re looking to the to steady the ship, ntil we can fi ure out where we are offensively,” Butler said. “Alford, Bryant and Harris get a lot of notoriety, but our defense is a unit that

works real well together. Warren Shankle is also big for us at linebacker and everybody started realizing by last spring that Ronald Triplett (6-1, 240, 4.9) at end is a darn good player too.” The Sharks return six starters on the offensive side of the ball. Other players to watch for TSWA AllState 5A co-coach of the year Butler include linebacker Courtney Brown (5-10, 200, 4.6) and offensive lineman Damien Jackson (6-1, 275), while junior quarterback Kyron Drones (6-1, 195, 4.8) and safety Jaylen Lane (5-10, 185, 4.7) made the top juniors list and linebacker Ty Harris (5-10, 180, 4.5) was considered to be the top sophomore. The prospects’ list features receivers C.J. Guidry, Greg Hancock and Jared Jackson, linebacker T.J. Marshall and offensive linemen Corey Smith, Caleb Leonard and Josh Martin. “Offensively, we lost a lot of kids who made key plays for us,” Butler said. “(Quarterback) Jamarian George got better 34 ALVIN SUN MEDIA | FALL SPORTS MAGAZINE
and better each week and really developed into a leader for us. We also lost big Cam (Johnson) on the offensive line and (Marquez) Huland at running back and one of our receivers (Kealon) Jackson in the slot. “We need some young guys to step up and do those roles. Kyron had a great offseason and we expect great things from him. Any time you’re stepping into that (the quarterback) role, it takes a little while to get your feet on the ground. He’s a tall kid. His stature is a little bit different than Jamarian. Kyron isn’t the shifty guy, but that doesn’t mean he can’t run the football either. He will sit back in the pocket and give guys a chance to work their routes.” Campbell forecasts Richmond Foster to win the 10-5A D-1 title and also edge the Sharks in the Region III Finals playoff rematch, while tabbing Highland Park to win their fourth straight Division I crown. Angleton and Friendswood are also predicted by the magazine to make the postseason. “One of the keys for us will be keeping
everyone healthy,” Butler said. “We were able to do that last year and knock on wood, we will hopefully be able to do that this year. We also did a great of job of hanging in ball games when things weren’t going well early. “One thing that we will be stressing this year is that we want to get started faster. We got a saying that goes attack, compete and finish. he attack part is hittin the ro nd early in the game and putting the pressure on people early rather than let ourselves linger and have to work our way back. That will be a focus for us early in the year.” Campbell’s 5A Division I preseason rankings went as follows: 1. Highland Park; 2. Denton Ryan; 3. Richmond Foster; 4. Frisco Lone Star; 5. Shadow Creek; 6. Tyler John Tyler; 7. Lufkin; 8. San Antonio Wagner; 9. Cedar Park; 10. Birdville. The Sharks open their second year in the UIL varsity football ranks at Humble’s Turner Stadium against Summer Creek on Aug. 31.
