Food trucks you need to try this summer

Street food has transformed the way we experience local cuisine, and the food truck scene is bigger and more vibrant than ever. Here are some local vendors you need to try this summer.

FRIENDS AND MOMOS (ACT)

This popular food truck located at 25 Launceston Street, Phillip is best known for its mouthwatering handmade Nepalese dumplings. They’re so good they’ve even opened a brick-and-mortar store in Gungahlin.

THE MANDALAY BUS (ACT)

This local institution has been part of Canberra’s late-night food scene for years. Located at the northern end of Braddon’s Lonsdale Street, you’ll find their menu brimming with fancy fast food favourites and some incredible Burmese, Chinese, and Spanish cuisine.

VE DESI FOOD TRUCK (ACT)

If you’re looking for authentic Indian street food, then try Ve Desi Food Truck located at 520 Cotter Road, Coombes. They specialise in stuffed kulchas, aloo paranthachaats, chilli paneer, noodle burgers, and some of the best samosas going around. Check out their socials for weekly specials.

MR B PASTEL (ACT)

This local food van is known for its delicious pastels – pies made with thin, crispy pastry, which are one of Brazil’s most iconic street foods. You can choose from a range of creamy fillings including slow-cooked meats and specialty cheese blends. Find them at Belconnen’s Grazier Lane and Kingston’s Old Bus Depot Markets.

PIZZA BY FIVE PASSIONS (ACT)

This pizza trailer is serving some of the freshest handmade pizza in the city, offering a range of classic flavours including margherita, ham, salami, funghi, as well as regular specials. They are located on McCaughey Street, Turner and fire up their ovens Wednesday to Friday.

EL-FII (ACT)

This tiny food trailer tucked away on Dairy Road, Fyshwick brings locals a fresh twist to classic comfort food. You’ll find a variety of poke bowls, sandwiches, burgers, loaded fries and delicious wings on their menu. Keep an eye on their socials for the latest specials.

THE DUMPLING DIPLOMAT (ACT)

If you’re craving dumplings then look no further than The Dumpling Diplomat, found at Kingston’s Old Bus Depot Markets. They make some of the tastiest handmade dumplings the city has to offer.

SYLVIE AND BRUNO (ACT)

If you’re a fan of Dutch mini pancakes, poffertjes, then you’ll love Sylvie and Bruno – and if you’ve never eaten poffertjes then take this as your sign to try them this summer. This popular little food truck also serves a range of baked goodies and homestyle food including lasagne, banana bread and muffins, plus locally roasted coffee.

LITTLE MEZ (ACT)

This family-run food truck is best known for its fresh and flavourful Mediterranean street food – think spiced lamb kofta, marinated grilled chicken, Greek salad, halloumi, dips, pita bread, za’atar and more. Open Wednesday to Sunday on Hindmarsh Drive, Phillip.

TIKKA STAND (ACT)

This Braddon-based food truck has been serving up authentic Indian street food for over a decade, and this year they were voted in the top 3 food trucks in Canberra by ThreeBestRated®. They are best known for flavour-filled dishes such as their Chicken Tikka Nest (Chicken Tikka over hot chips) and the Tikka Pulao.

SYLVIE AND BRUNO (ACT)

MOOWING STEAK (ACT)

True to its name, Moowing Steak brings locals some top-notch chargrilled meats and an inspired menu of Western, Cantonese and Nepalese cuisine. Think steaks, burgers, skewers, momos, wings and other delicious sides. You can find them on Elouera Street, Braddon near Waves Car Wash.

MR PAPA (ACT)

This local food van favourite brings the vibrant flavours of traditional Peruvian street food to the capital. Their menu is full of fresh ingredients, bold, authentic flavours and a variety of meat, vegetarian and gluten-free options. This year ThreeBestRated® voted them in the top 3 food trucks in Canberra.

PUFF DADDY’S (NSW)

This food truck has a stellar menu. Expect to find breakfast food like bacon and egg rolls, freshly made custard filled choux puffs, baked goodies like banana bread, cookies, croissants and donuts, and freshly brewed coffee. They are located at Hanging Rock in Batemans Bay.

BIG FELLA BRIYANI (ACT)

This family-run food van located in Gungahlin is cooking up bold south-Indian flavours that you’ll come back for over and over again. You can expect a range of meat and vegetarian dishes for all tastes, plus a variety of delicious specials and overall good vibes.

CUT AND RUN PIZZA (NSW)

This street-food loving crew cooks handcrafted pizzas with traditional and gourmet flavour combinations such as pepperoni & onion, double smoked ham & pineapple, slow-cooked meats with fresh ricotta, basil & parmigiano, or roasted pumpkin, capsicum, fresh ricotta & baby spinach. They also serve slices of tasty New York cheesecake. This food van moves all around the coast, from Long Beach, Broulee, Sunshine Bay, Lilli Pill and Moruya, so check out their socials for daily locations.

MOHR NUTS FOR DONUTS (NSW)

This vibrant food van located at the Marina Resort at 49 Beach Road, opposite the Catalina Country Club, serves freshly cooked donuts, including cinnamon, glazed and donuts loaded with ice-cream and sweet toppings. They also sell burgers, toasties, coffee and milkshakes.

HOT OFF THE GRILL (NSW)

This popular local food truck specialises in made-to-order burgers using only the freshest ingredients. On their menu you’ll find cheeseburgers, chicken burgers and veggie burgers, plus chicken nuggets, fries, cold drinks and more. They trade across a variety of locations every week, from Batemans Bay, Long Beach, Malua Bay and Tomakin, so check their Facebook for times and locations.
