hile following trends may feel like a fleeting endeavor, in kitchen design, they often stand the test of time. From millwork to backsplashes, color palettes to design styles, something important is shifting in the world of kitchen and interior design. After more than a decade dominated by bright whites, cool grays, and the polished precision of minimalist surfaces, a warmer, richer, more grounded aesthetic is emerging. The messages from across the design world are consistent– earthy is not a seasonal moment. It is a sustained design direction with deep roots heading into the future. Kitchen designs for today embrace "warm minimalism," moving away from sterile spaces. This high-tech exhibit showcases a loon’s life. They are master underwater hunters built more like a submarine than typical waterfowl. Their dense bones (not hollow like most birds) allow them to sink underwater to hunt for long periods.

On a starry Minnesota night in September, adult loons take flight to begin their 1,170 to 1,600-mile migration to the southern marine coasts from North Carolina to Florida (often resting on the Great Lakes).

Raised in a South Dakota farming region, she had never experienced the loon’s iconic call until she moved to northern Minnesota. “It is truly something special to hear and see, on quiet mornings and evenings as the sun rises and sets on the still lake.” Loon populations, however, are experiencing difficulties.

Jon Mobeck, executive director of the National Loon Center, notes, “While the population of breeding loons in Minnesota has remained stable for the past two decades, juvenile loon survival rates and annual chick ratios have been declining steadily.”

Degrading water clarity, vanishing nesting habitat due to shoreland development, the impacts of human recreation, climate change, and environmental poisoning from toxins such as lead fishing tackle – all are threats. Martel says, “We as humans play a big part in the livelihood of loons.” The common loon was about to take on a special meaning for Martel and many others.

Share the shoreline. Landscape your property for loons by planting native shrubs and plants and maintaining a natural shoreline. Use lead-free tackle to protect loons and other wildlife, and be respectful — keep your distance.

Young loons linger a little longer to grow stronger and gain more fat, then migrate in late October to midNovember. Loons can fly 75 miles per hour at altitudes of 3,000-5,000 feet.

Using the distinct colors and patterns of the loon’s unique feathers, the National Loon Center’s flex conference room is creatively inspired by the loon.

Ashley Martel, vice president and project architect at the multidisciplinary design firm Widseth in Crosslake, Minnesota, has been central in the project’s evolution for nearly a decade.

Martel is the lead architectural visionary and public face of the National Loon Center.

Resembling the wings of a loon, solar canopies, the elevated, parking lot roof-like structures above the cars, generate renewable electricity, while offering shade and weather protection.

The Minnesota Design Team (MDT), a volunteer program of the American Institute of Architects Minnesota, brings together design experts and residents of rural and small towns to address community planning and physical improvements.

Together, in 2016, with over 150 volunteer participants, they began reimagining the heart of the city of Crosslake and its relationship with Cross Lake. Through this process, the idea for a National Loon Center was born, and support grew for placing it in Crosslake. The University of Minnesota provided a master plan for the project. Martel shares, “I was lucky to be involved early on to help with visuals for local and state support and funding and work with some truly inspirational individuals. It was like a dream to be presented with this amazing idea and think about its meaning and purpose with a parti (visual design inspiration), the loon, to bring to life many of its unique characteristics through form and function of the facility, in a sustainable, thoughtful way.”

The anticipated National Loon Center, which will open next year, will have an important impact on its community and beyond. This three-story, state-of-the-art facility will showcase sustainable building practices and renewable energy sources, incorporating geothermal and solar energy,

along with heavy timber construction–all elements Martel is proud of. Notable features include the thermally modified wood siding, with a charred look reminiscent of feathers, and a loon-shaped parking lot visible to passing satellites high above the center on a starry night.

A family-friendly center, it will feature highly immersive, interactive exhibits like the “Ecosystem Experience.” Imagine a threestory cylinder-like space where it actually looks and feels like you are underwater with the loons, then you transition with them to rest in their nest by a dock, and lastly, join a loon migratory flight. Attendees will also be able to see and interact with research dedicated to freshwater conservation, shoreland habitats, and the vast air and migration routes that loons depend on throughout their lives.

Martel’s wish is that those who visit the National Loon Center will leave with a better understanding of everyone’s role in preserving the “never-ending music of our miraculous planet,” and with a greater appreciation for the Minnesota state bird. And in Martel’s words, “I cannot wait to personally experience it along with all the visitors of the National Loon Center!”

T

he word “obstacle” has never been a part of artist Jessica Woods’s daily life.

Living with a permanent disability, including a fully fused spine and recent hip replacements, has profoundly shaped her appreciation for purposeful, impactful creative work. Although these challenges are not immediately visible, they serve as a reminder to all of us that everyone faces unique circumstances and challenges in their own lives. This perspective brings “emotional and nuanced depth” to her art and reinforces her belief that creative expression is adaptable and possible for all. For Woods, painting is personal and a means of liberation. She “encourages others to find fulfillment through creativity” regardless of the public recognition they might or might not achieve.

Her interest in art began at an early age and developed academically, attending the Art Institutes International Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design.

She received additional coursework at North Dakota State University. Woods adds, “Professionally, I have gained experience in multiple roles, including cake decorator and interior designer.”

Woods focuses on exploring light, movement, and depth through the complex layering of color and texture. “It is gratifying to witness viewers connecting with my work, often discovering perspectives and meanings beyond my initial intentions,” she adds. “My approach to painting relies on intuition and authenticity, rather than strict adherence to traditional techniques learned in art school. I am dedicated to producing layered, sincere, and vibrant works that invite interpretation and resonate with both me and my audience.”

Jack Woods, my youngest, is an Operator for Cass County Rural Water District, and his partner, Gabby, is pursuing further education following participation as a Division I collegiate athlete.

atvia is a sovereign nation in Northern Europe on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, sharing land borders with Estonia, Lithuania, Russia, and Belarus. Its landscape is defined by pristine, low-lying terrain, dense untamed forests, thousands of lakes, and sandy, white Baltic coastlines.

Latvians are known for their deep-rooted connection to nature, rich musical heritage, and a resilient, reserved demeanor. Deeply loyal, calm, and stoic, they are proudly self-sufficient, raising their own food and enjoying traditional wood-fired saunas. Latvia’s capital and largest city, Riga, is known for its medieval charm and untouched natural beauty. Its preserved medieval and stunning Art Nouveau architecture is celebrated worldwide as a UNESCO World Heritage site. In Riga, Fargoan Brett Johnson completed a journey not just in miles but in wisdom and appreciation for the Latvian people and their culture. Enjoy his journey as he studies the Old-World craft of Nordic bladesmithing with The Northmen Guild masters, using historical metallurgical techniques deeply rooted in Norse tradition.

This sword replica, made

by Johnson based on historical findings, was made using traditional 12th-century Norse and medieval forging techniques. A wooden mallet is used to flatten the blade without creating dents.

Once the steel is heated to 2100-2300˚, blades are shaped-forged using power hammers and hydraulic presses to initiate shaping and refining on the anvil.

Soeren Uhlmann, a master blacksmith and member of the Northern Guild, is using iron hammer strikes to ensure the steel is flattened evenly, while Johnson looks for any obvious imperfections or twisting in the blade.

IH: You embarked on a journey of a lifetime, a trip to Latvia, for a specific purpose — to learn an Old-World skill taught by Northmen Guild masters. What is the “guild” and what countries are involved?

BJ: The Northmen Guild is a society of master craftsmen. They focus on

traditional craftsmanship, including timber framing, furniture making, tool making, and blacksmithing, with an emphasis on quality. This is achieved through teamwork, traditional hand tools, and precision over speed. Members are scattered throughout the world, with the majority located in Northern Europe. The application process is difficult. If your initial application and examples of your work appear worthy, you then create pieces for them to assess (whether woodworking, blacksmithing, leatherworking, etc.). I was told that they had 30 applicants last year, with three advancing to the next round and none becoming official members of the guild.

IH: Why Latvia?

BJ: I wanted a real-world experience. In the Spring of 2025, the Northmen

Guild announced a 10-day intensive sword-making course. This was my ultimate dream. Nothing seemed cooler to me than learning how to blacksmith. When I told my wife, she encouraged me to book it. They accept only two people for each course (as opposed to 20-plus for timber framing courses), so I just pulled the trigger. I secured my spot a year in advance and ended up being part of their first sword-making course in April 2026.

IH: How long was your stay?

BJ: The course was ten days long, which didn’t account for travel, so

actually, about two weeks. The Northern Blacksmith Association is located in Ligatne, Latvia. I was mentored and worked alongside Soeren Uhlmann, a master blacksmith who founded the association and is a member of the Northmen Guild, and another 3rd-generation master blacksmith, Kaspars Bambis, who also taught the course. They are some of the top bladesmiths in Europe.

we visited the Latvian National Archives for inspiration. We viewed and learned about different types of ancient old-world swords so we could begin designing our own. I ultimately based my sword on a 12th-century Northern European sword retrieved from rivers near the Baltic Sea. From that point forward, we began each day with Latvian pastries and coffee in the workshop, discussing the day ahead. Our days were long. We spent 10 to 13 hours daily crafting our swords. The time flew by as we really enjoyed being in the workshop. The blacksmith’s apprentice cooked our meals in the workshop – all delicious.

IH: What elements of Latvia and its people surprised you the most? How would you compare the lifestyle differences to those of Americans?

BJ: From my time in Latvia, it seems very much like many

Northern European countries; it includes a lot of very interesting history. The people there are very humble – nothing flashy or fancy, which was great. In the small village I stayed in, everyone was very helpful to one another. People offered anything they had to others in need, whether it was items or just physical labor. It seemed like everyone was watching out for one another. True happiness seemed to come before wealth, which may be the biggest difference between Latvians and Americans.

travel After hard physical labor, the meals cooked and served on site were hearty and delicious–pork, potatoes, fresh dill, beans, and dense rye breads.

IH: Describe the old-world skills that you were immersed in. What were the lessons you learned?

BJ: I wanted to understand the process

of making a sword, learn the ways of blacksmithing, and ultimately come home with what is now the most cherished thing I own. I learned that taking time to make something of quality gives it so much more meaning and value. So often I would do DIY projects and try to get it done in the cheapest and fastest way possible. If you want something worth having, it takes time and patience. At the end of the day, you will appreciate it more, and it will last a lifetime.

IH: What were the most memorable experiences related to the Latvian everyday culture — music, food?

BJ: It seemed like Latvian culture is one

of camaraderie. They are also heavy into music. A lot of heavy rock, hip hop, and dance music. Each day in the workshop, we would take turns playing our own music from our phones. I heard music from Africa, everywhere in Europe, South America, and Asia. It was cool to hear bands from all genres all over the world. The food was also very Scandinavian with some Russian influences. Rye bread and dairy products were very common. Kvass, a rye bread drink, is very big there. They love their cottage cheese, sauerkraut, and sour cream.

I’ve learned that you can put sour cream on anything and it tastes pretty good. Then, of course, there were the Karums. I encourage anyone reading this to research Karums and try them if you get your hands on them. They are a refrigerated, chocolate-covered treat with a cottage cheese-based filling. I probably ate fifty while I was there.

IH: Any last thoughts?

BJ: Thanks, Latvia – for friendships, the

sword…and the Karums!

“Good Bread” with Kalamata olives is a family favorite.

F

or years, I had been the baker-in-chief in our Carlson household. Pastries, cakes, pies, cookies, bread — anything with yeast was my domain. I bake for fun. I sometimes bake for no reason other than wanting to, and then I give the baked goods to friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

This is how our kitchen life carried on for the first 15 years we’ve been together.

On the night I told my husband, Craig, that I was pregnant, he began helping in the kitchen by

cooking dinner every night. And that is exactly what he did. I rather assumed this arrangement would be temporary and end after I had the baby. Nine months is a long time to be the head and exclusive cook. Cooking was something we did together, our hobby. But to my appreciative surprise, after the baby came, he just kept right on cooking. This was about the same time in his newfound kitchen career that he began his foray into yeasted food adventures.

ingredients One evening he made steamed bao buns, a traditional Chinese bread steamed in a bamboo steamer basket, rather than baked. He stuffed them with tender pork loin, but chicken or red bean paste are also used. Unlike traditional Asian dumplings, bao are yeasted and their rise is a result of the steam. He made eighteen bao, but still had quite a bit of dough left over. He decided to shape the remaining dough into a small loaf and bake it like bread. The result was the best homemade sandwich bread I have ever tasted. For years, he had been asking me to figure out how to make really great sandwich bread and despite trying dozens of different recipes, I never quite found one that we liked. And, the truth be told, he accomplished it on a whim — and in one try!

To this day, he calls it “Good Bread” and makes it at least once a week.

Good bread is a slight misnomer. I think it is superior bread. I never grew up with Wonder Bread™, but I’ve heard about its legacy. I think my husband’s “good bread” is something quite similar. It is soft, moist and spongy — the quintessential sandwich bread. To change it up a bit, he adds Kalamata olives, which ups his sandwich bread game quite a bit.

A toasted slice of it with some ricotta, tomatoes and fresh basil is the perfect quick and healthy lunch, packed with nutrition. So, for now and the foreseeable future, I am quite pleased with our expanded “kitchenstaff ” arrangement at the Carlson household. “Enjoy Good Bread”!

WET INGREDIENTS: ½

cup whole milk

METHOD: Use a stand mixer with a dough hook. Warm the milk in the microwave for 30 seconds, then add it to the stand mixer bowl along with the rest of the wet ingredients. Briefly hand mix with a whisk. Let stand for 7 minutes, until the yeast shows you it is alive and frothy.

Mix all the dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Put the dough hook on the stand mixer and set it to the lowest speed. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet. When the dough comes together, mix until somewhat smooth, usually 5 or so minutes.

Add the chopped olives. A bit of manual mixing with your hands will help incorporate the olives.

Take the dough out of the mixing bowl and place it on a floured surface. The dough will be wet and may need up to ¼ cup of additional flour. Knead by hand for a few minutes and add a little flour sparingly, until the dough stops sticking to your hands.

Form the dough into a ball and place in a clean, lightly oiled bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour until doubled in size. Punch down the dough and knead for another minute.

Shape into a ball, then form it into a “loaf” shape and place in a buttered 9- by 5-inch pan. Bake at 375˚ for 40-50 minutes, until the top of the loaf is a nice dark brown. Let rest. As tempting as it is to cut into warm bread, doing so releases all the moisture. I typically make bread at night and let it cool overnight. Enjoy!
